Honda will replace the liftgate struts in approximately 21,776 model year 2005 honda odyssey touring vehicles equipped with power liftgates that were built before a manufacturing change of the liftgate strut assembly on july 16, 2005 (nhtsa recall no. 10v-055).vehicles built after the change experience significantly lower failure rates.the recall will inform consumers of the dangers of the existing struts and provide the opportunity for vehicle owners to obtain new struts that are more robust.based on honda's action, the agency has decided to close the investigation.while honda has not made a decision that the recalled vehicles contain a safety-related defect, in view of the recall, further use of the agency's resources does not appear to be warranted.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.additional information can be found in the attached engineering analysis report.

EQ12010Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)09/28/2012Stabilus Rear Liftgate Struts Failing
On february 16, 2012, american honda motor company (honda) notified the nhtsa that it had decided a defect exists in certain model year 2008 through 2009 odyssey vehicles.gas-filled struts that help to raise and support the liftgate of vehicles equipped with a power liftgate system may be prone to early life failures due to a manufacturing flaw.the flaw can result in a leak of the pressurized gas, leading to reduced strut performance.struts with diminished performance can lead to unexpected closure, increasing the risk of personal injury.stabilus was identified as the manufacturer of these gas-filled strutsthis matter was assigned recall number 12v-062.in reviewing past records, rmd discovered similar recalls conducted by toyota, ford, and honda between 2006 and 2010.on february 18, 2010, honda notified the nhtsa of the same rear liftgate gas strut issue in its 2005 odyssey vehicles.this issue was given recall number 10v-055.on may 30, 2008, toyota motor corporation (toyota) notified the nhtsa of the same issue found in its 2004 through 2006 sienna vehicles.this issue was given recall number 08v-244.on march 6, 2006, ford motor company (ford) notified the nhtsa of the same issue found in its 2005 through 2006 freestar and mercury monterey vehicles.this issue was given recall number 06v-069.these three recalls did not originally identify the supplier of the gas struts, however, all three manufacturers have since confirmed that stabilus supplied the equipment at issue in each recall.the purpose of the eq is to write to stabilus and to contact any other company that might have purchased this equipment, notify them of this defect in any vehicles they manufactured, and to ensure thorough safety recalls are conducted where appropriate.

I am the original owner of the 2005 honda odyssey with about 15 k miles. in june we noticed loss of the ac system. upon a visit to local honda dealer i was told that a rock/road debris punctured the ac condenser and the repair estimate runs about $ 700.00. in a process of calling 5 other local honda dealers trying to get a better pricing, i learned that my case is not that rare as it may sound. i was told that on average they replace about 2-3 ac condensers a month. then i checked the internet and found much more odyssey's owner with identical stories. my issue is that 2005-2007 odyssey has a design flaw - too big opening under the bumper that allows any road debris to penetrate ac condenser and/or radiator. i am firm believer that honda acknowledges that problem because 2008 odyssey has a very nice, factory installed screen mesh under the bumper without any significant body upgrades for that year model. i called the regional honda customer service center but they denied any responsibility. *tr

On 07/16/07 my wife drove about 65 miles to a dr. appointment. when she stopped smoke came from under the hood. she called me and i drove the 65 miles to check the van. the air conditioner was not working so i took the van to the dealer thinking a warranty repair. they told me a object hit the air conditioner coil in front of the radiator and this was not covered under warranty. it cost me $720.35. they advised me to order a aftermarket billite grill from e bay and this will keep this from happening again. i did and this cost me $104.00. i did a search in the internet and found this is happening to a lot of people in all areas of the country. seems there is poor designing for this area of the van allowing objects to damage the vehicle's parts. please investigate this problem. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 30 mph on normal road conditions, the front of the vehicle shook when the brakes were applied. no warning signal illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealership who determined the front wheel pads were worn out and the two front rotors were machined. after 4000 miles, the problem recurred and the dealership determined the front wheels brake pads were worn out and replaced them again. the problem persisted and the front shaking was noticed nine times. the manufacturer was contacted who opened a case with the commitment of calling back promptly which has not happened. there was a wind noise coming from the windshield and the left sliding door. the rear seat belt was ripped. updated 11/14/06. *jb

Windshield wind noises.. noises started 7 months and 9900 miles after possession of vehicle. starting hearing whistling noise when drive vehicle @ low speeds on windy days. took vehicle into the shop and they replaced both moldings and adjusted fender. took vehicle back into the shop a month later with same problem. they preformed bulletin #04-078. drove vehicle additional 2000 miles and wind noise started again. this time i had other dealership in town try to fix windshield. picked up vehicle and drove it out of town and rt. windshield moldings came loose. pulled over and noticed that dealership had scratched and dented fender and windshield post. pulled back the loose and flapping moldings and noticed that they had shoved a red shop towel in the fender/windshield area to stop the noise. **is this proper procedures in the repair manuel** shoving red shop rags in the fenders to stop wind noise?? what to do now - fender and windshield post and quarter needs to be repainted - i now have lost value on vehicle because vehicle will be painted and windshield molding is held on by duck tape. --fyi, windshield moldings are only held in with double sided tape clips - double sided tape will only hold for a couple of years, before they deter ate and they will need to be replaced.. factory did not think of the longevity of the windshield moldings. many, many more people will continuously have problems with wind noise. *nm

I bought a new 2005 honda odyssey ex-l and drove it on only 2 occasions. the first time i drove it, i had the windows behind the front seats down and not only was the noise level extremely high, but it created some kind of vibration or pressure change which caused extreme pain to my ear drums. about 2 weeks later, i drove it again, tried all combinations of rolling down windows but as long as the back ones were down, the vibration/pressure to my ears was intolerable. i had throbbing in my ears for several days and it finally led to an ear infection. i brought this to the attention of darling's honda (the dealership in bangor, maine) and to american honda. the dealership has tried for 3 months to try to find an alternate vehicle for me. however, american honda said they would do nothing and the vehicle design is not defective, even though i have heard similar complaints from others. apparently ruptured or perforated ear drums are not considered a hazard to the honda company. i now have a new car i cannot use unless it is too cold to roll down the windows, or so warm that the a/c is the only alternative, because it is a hazard to my health. *jb

Power sliding door on 05' honda odyssey fell off when unloading my children from the vehicle. the middle bracket/strut that holds the sliding door on the center rail along the side of the van totally failed. i was at the bus stop with my children and the door fell off as i opened the door to help my child out. i was mortified as you might imagine. two men came to my rescue just after my son jumped out of the way. the door has concerned me for some time but i never heard of a sliding door falling off nor did the dealer mention it. previously, the door would click when we closed it and the automatic door would beep and fail to close. we had the door checked during a routine service appointment 2-3 years ago. the dealer said it was a sensor or possibly a motor issue. no one said anything about the door possibly falling off - nor did they mention any potential bracket failure. i would have had that bracket fixed had they even hinted that this could happen. but what's also very disturbing is that a friend with an '07 is having significant problems with her doors as well. after my incident, she immediately went and had her door brackets checked and found hers were also imminently close to complete failure. they were replaced. she has special needs children and a door failure for her could be catastrophic. the day of this event i called two area dealers. both service counter reps acknowledged this bracket issue. parents really need to be warned about this. i fear honda corporate may be ignoring the issue when children may be hurt. this isn't a starter or a transmission - it's a door. please investigate the issue and at least issue a safety bulletin or recall. *tr

Drivers side rear passenger 'power sliding door' (psd) failed to close, requiring wife and children to drive to garage with open door, and door alarm sounding. door closed normally at garage, and neither that mechanic nor the honda dealer could find any problem with door. problem repeated sporadically through the years, and dealer could never resolve problem. i discovered that i could manually assist the door to close and, with several tries, get it closed. because of the hazards in having to drive to a mechanic with children and an open passenger door & screaming alarm, our solution has been to never open that door, but occasionally a passenger has unknowingly opened it, causing difficulty closing it. over the years i've observed that this failure happens whenever the vehicle is parked on a noticeable incline. i suggested to the honda service manager that some mechanical part may be loose, causing binding in the track, but he always reported that everything about the mechanism was fine. i discovered today that nhtsa action number 10016777 and honda service bulletin number 204110 were issued in 2005, relating to this problem. the honda dealer was, or should have been, aware of the defect each time i returned to them to fix it under warranty. i believe this flaw should be recalled for repair: there is a genuine safety hazard to a vehicle full of children when having to drive to a garage when a door refuses to close. *tr

While on vacation, the electric sliding door on the passenger side failed in such a way that the door could not be opened more than a few inches. we were still able to close the door and safely drive the vehicle. there was no way to manually override the electric opening mechanism where it was stuck, so the door could not be used. several months later, the driver side sliding door also failed. in this case, the door was stuck half open and could not be moved either to fully open it or close it. the door was stuck open until we could get the vehicle to the dealer for repair. this is a safety issue. the electrically operated doors should be designed in such a way that allows easy manual operation of the doors in the event of a failure of the electric motor and opening mechanism. *tr

Issue: design flaw in 2005 honda odyssey exl nav res which exposes the vehicles air conditioner condenser to unnecessary puncture damage from common street debris allowing dangerous freon gases to escape to damage the environment and provide great financial hardship to the vehicle owner. common issue experienced by many of the exact same vehicle owners. this is a serious environmental issue that needs to be resolved by honda as well as reimbursement for repairs and prevention steps taken by consumers to protect vehicles from future damage. my honda had just experienced this issue and now all the freon released unnecessarily into the atmosphere and we are stuck with a $1000 repair and the vehicle is then still easily susceptible to future damage. i would like to file a formal complaint against honda for this serious issue environmentally damage issue caused by their design flaw which easily exposes the air conditioning condenser to unnecessary damage and great financial hardship to the vehicle owner.

Tailgate closed unexpectedly while i was standing underneath while loading groceries. 1.) there was no warning that this was going to happen. until this point the tailgate had functioned normally in the manual or automatic open/close mode. 2.) after the tailgate fell it never worked again until i made repairs to the hold open strut. 3.) i checked the struts and found that the drivers side strut had failed. the strut had no pressure left inside to push out the rod that holds the tailgate open. the passenger side strut was ok and i did not replace this. i purchased a replacement strut from my honda dealer. when i called to see if a part was in stock the person in the parts department asked me if the vehicle was a touring model, which it is. *tr

We've had the left side sliding door on our 2005 honda odyssey fail to close numerous times over the past 3 years. the dealer has 'fixed' it at least four times in the past three years. most recently, while returning from a trip to florida, the door failed to close at a rest stop. in attempting to close the door manually, the 'sliding spring' broke and the door slipped off the track. we had to lift the door and slide it shut. when the spring broke, the weight of the door caused the sliding track to be dented outward. our fear is that the door can slide off the track and fall at any time since there's nothing to hold it in. we feel that this is a serious safety issue that should not be happening to any car much less a 3 year old vehicle. we contacted both honda and the dealer. we're being charged $95.00 for the dealer to diagnose the problem and may be charged the full cost of repairing the door. the dealer has indicated that in order to properly diagnose the problem, the door must be removed completely. this is a major repair that can run into several hundred dollars. neither honda or the dealer is offering to cover the cost of the repairs at this point despite their record of repeated repairs to this vehicle for the same problem. *tr

My 3 year old son sits in a booster seat, driver's side, in the 2nd row seats of our 05 odyssey ex-l. this model has electric sliding doors on both sides. my son routinely opens and closes the door by pulling the handle after asking permission. on this occasion, he was seated in his seat and buckled in when he started the door closing. about 10 seconds later, as the door was completing it's latching, he started screaming at the top of his lungs. his left hand was caught at the back edge of the door between the weatherstrip and the door itself. i had to open the door with the dash mounted button to release his hand. upon examination by his mother and me, one of his fingers was scratched a bit and they hurt, but no indications of more serious injury, thanks to god. i've always been a bit concerned about the front of the door catching or pinching someone, but never really thought about the back of the door as it pulls in to latch. upon testing myself after this, it actually takes a fair amount of force back there to make the door reverse. a child's' fingers will be no match for it. i think honda (and probably others) needs to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of automatic doors on minivans. *tr

There were no events leading to failure. failure of the rear door support strut was sudden. one of the strut failed immediately. upon research on internet, found that strut making sound most likely had a failed seal and inert gas had escaped. appeared similar to recall issue with toyota sienna's. honda mfg had no recall issue with the failure of the strut. upon contact with local honda distributor first honda in simi valley, because car had 37k miles it had gone beyond the 36k warranty for the vehicle. cost for material and labor to repair the strut was $170k material $110 and labor $60 approx. the actual repair work took 10 - 15 minutes. van is used to transport small children and the failure of the one, made owner- mom very difficult to put in and remove- strollers used and stored in back of vehicle. if failure had been while putting items in and out of the rear, the heavy weight of the door would have resulted in serious injury. *tr

I purchased a 2005 honda odessey. i requested a moon roof as a honda option. i was not told that this was not an option on the model that i had selected. i was given an after market moon roof. i went back to the dealer to have an over head dvd player installed and i was told that the main overhead beam was cut to install the moon roof and that what was left of the beam was not strong enough to hold the dvd player. i began to question the quality of work that was done to install the moon roof and i was then told it was after market. i asked the dealer and honda to certify that the installation was safe. they both refused. i have since explained my concerns about the safety of the vehicle especially in turn over situations. honda and the dealership has refused to do anything. i am very concern about the installation and i want honda to take back the vehicle since i bought honda but i was sold a honda vehicle with an after market moon roof. not only this but i don't have a honda warranty on the moonroof. the only warranty i have is with the dealership. i am currently pregnant and i already have 2 children. the minivan is a vehicle for my family. i don't think the mini van is safe in case of a crash or roll over. i say this because if the beam is not strong enough to hold a dvd player then in case of a roll over or crash the roof will come in on me and my children. *ak *bf *nm
