Defect SummaryHonda is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 odyssey and acura rl vehicles. brake fluid containing polymers is used that acts as a lubricant for certain brake system components. if replacement brake fluid is used that does not contain such polymers, or that contains only small amounts, a part of the rubber seal located at the rear of the brake master cylinder may become dry, and the seal may curl during movement of the piston. if this occurs, a small amount of brake fluid could slowly leak from the seal into the brake booster.
Consequence SummaryA leak of brake fluid could lead to a change in brake pedal feel and overtime a degradation in braking performance increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the brake master cylinder seal free of charge. the manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. owners may contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.

The office of defects investigation (odi) has received 69 complaints, and honda has received 613 complaints and field reports, alleging low/soft/spongy brake pedal travel in model year (my) 2006 through 2008 honda odyssey minivans.twenty-six odi complaints were also reported to honda, resulting in a total complaint count of 656.some complaints allege that the condition resulted in extended stopping distances, including some reports of rolling past stop signs or traffic lights.there are 14 alleged crashes in the subject vehicle population related to low/soft pedals. in response to odi's information request for preliminary evaluation pe09-024, honda indicated that small amounts of air may enter the brake system during initial diagnostics of the vehicle stability assist (vsa) modulator while the pump is briefly actuated for system diagnostics after the engine is started.the amount of air gradually increases with each successive engine start cycle, resulting in progressively increasing brake pedal stroke.according to honda, the condition does not present a significant risk to motor vehicle safety because the pedal stroke gradually increases, providing the driver with information that the brake pedal height is changing and requires attention.honda has further indicated that there is no deterioration of braking performance caused by the subject condition, even though the pedal height and feel are different, until pedal stroke has reached the end of travel and the driver cannot produce any additional brake line pressure.honda states that it is unaware of any vehicles that have reached such a condition and honda testing using a leaking field return modulator indicates that it would take over a year before the pedal travel would reach its limit during hard stops with 200 n (45 lbf) of pedal effort - the nominal force required to reach abs braking mode. odi's analysis of warranty data indicates that the my 2007-08 odyssey vehicles have experienced the alleged defect at a rate of 0.67%.the my 2006 odyssey vehicles have experienced the alleged defect at a significantly lower rate (0.04%) than the my 2007-08 odyssey.honda implemented a design change in the my 2007 vehicles to change the vsa diagnostic program. this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea09-014) for the my 2007-08 odyssey vehicles to continue to investigate the scope, frequency, and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect.

Bought vehicle used & noticed a soft pedal from the go! saw where master cylinder was rebuilt & front pads put on before my purchase. took to honda to get serviced on 7/18/2012 at 118,647 miles & told them it still felt a little soft with the pedal going lower than normal. they checked it out in service & put new rotors & pads on the rear. we took it on a trip to florida & the brakes felt good. seems better now however it's beginning to feel a little soft again but appears to be braking ok. i told [xxx] in service at honda & i told him i will keep an eye on it to see if there are any differences in the oncoming miles. he said ok. thanks! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

My 2006 honda odyssey has a problem with the brake feeling 'soft'. i have to press the brake almost to the floor to stop the car. this is similar to the recall for the same model from 2007 to 2008. however, dealership will not fix this issue because our car is from 2006 model year.

I was driving down a hill and had to stop suddenly and it took my van about 6-8 feet to come to a complete stop. i had to apply pressure with both feet. i had to turn the wheel to the left to avoid rear-ending a truck. this is the second time that this has happened with this van while going down hill. the first time, in 2008, resulted in a rear-end collision. the first time it happened i did not realize that there was something wrong with my brakes. the second time, i had to turn my steering wheel again the same way to avoid an accident. it seems the brakes don't catch when going down a hill and need to come to a quick stop.

My honda odyssey had braking problem since we bought it brand new in 2006. it is hard to brake especially when it runs to downhill road. it also gives a noise when i brakes. i took my minivan to honda dealers a few times and they told me they could not find any brake problems. but it is still there.

I am the owner of 2006 honda odyssey. i started to feel the vehicle break pedals soft and low over 2 years ago. the problem results me having extended stopping distance for safety. each time when i drive it i have to pay extra attention to keep the distance between the vehicle in front of me. i went to dealer for repair last year when i had normal services. the dealer told me that they found nothing wrong and it can?t be adjusted. i went to the same dealer again for normal service yesterday and asked for break check up again. the dealer told me they found that vsa modulator is in faulty and it will cost me around $1,000 just for parts since my warranty time is over. i stated i had this problem 2 years ago and you check and found it was nothing wrong while it was still under the warranty. plus, my odyssey only has 10,000 miles on the meter since this is our spare vehicle we don't drive much. the dealer agreed with me and arranged for another full day re-check up and will get honda to involve. today i happened to see online that i am not the only one to have this problem. as of the feature of the van, most of time we have children on board. what a dangerous game we are playing! thanks god, we don't use it much and have not had any incident. just notice i have to input the incident date below before submission. i put a dummy date of 01-01-06 instead ( i bought my odyssey after this date). *tr

2006 odyssey has warped brake rotors, but the original brake pads are still in good shape. according to dealership; this is very normal for odyssey even for 1 or 2 years old van. my rotors needs to be replaced because they are warped, not due to wear and tear (becoming too thin). this is more like a manufacture defect parts than normal wear and tear problem.

I'm the original owner of a honda odyssey 2006 ex-l, i have religiously maintained it and have used honda filters, oils and lubricants, have done oil changes every 7,500 per honda maintenance schedule and replaced tranny fluid every 15,000 miles, especially after knowing this has been an issue with previous odyssey's and current ones. at 52,000 miles i had to replace a broken motor mount (known issue that honda won't acknowledge) thankfully extended warranty covered it. at 90,700 (my extended warranty expired at 85,200 miles) my transmission started making a whining noise (i have had 2 independent mechanics and a honda dealership verify the tranny is going south). in addition to the motor mount and transmission issues, this vehicle has had recalls to replace front brake pads, brake master o ring, power steering pump and paint peeling. for a $33k vehicle, it sure is a lemon.

Our 2006 honda odyssey's brake pedal was fine until the dealer replace the vsa modulator due to failure on oct 8,2008.the brake pedal feel very low and spongy when apply brake pressure. we took the vehicle back to the dealer and have them check for problem on oct 16, 2008.they found small air pocket in the brake system and bleed the system but still little low. on nov 9, 2009, we took the vehicle back to the dealer for a 15,000 miles services and have them check the low brake pedal again. they even flush the braking system twice and still found pedal slightly low. our question is why does honda not include our 2006 odyssey in the 2007 & 2008 odyssey recall as well if it present the same problem for our 2006. vsa modulator where small pocket of air can get into the brake system and can cause low brake pedal and longer stopping distance.

We purchased a new 2006 honda odyssey sometime in early 2007. on march 12, 2010 we had to resurface the rotors of our brakes for the 3rd time because of warped brake rotors. right now the odyssey has approximately 70,000 miles on it. so basically, we have had to resurface our brakes rotors on average every 23,000 miles. before we do each resurfacing, the entire steering columng would shake and shudder with braking that occurs at speeds over 35mph. we have had 6 different cars in our lives and none of the cars had to have their rotors resurfaced, ever.

Brake failure on honda odessey 2006 models when having more than 5 persons in the vehicle. very low braking power at speeds greater than 60 mph. this has caused a very cautious driving habit. this was brought to the attention of honda dealership and was inspected as good condition. has occured many times. the vehicle shudders on application of brakes everytime to slow down. total loss of braking power when driving down slope. driving down slope, the brakes squeel (metal griding over metal). this incident occurs when driving longer than 15 minutes downhill with constant application of brakes. shifted the gear to the lowest, and yet there is no braking power. this happened when the vehicle was less than 4 months old. dealer checked the vehicle to be fine.

I have owned a 2006 honda oyssey for three years and the brake pads have a severe grinding noise once they heat up. the easiest way to make the brakes to grind is to perform three or four successive stops, light, hard, med, it makes no difference. bottom line, once the brakes get hot, the grinding will continue until the brakes and rotors have cooled. the dealer noted the problem under warranty and replaced/resurfaced the pads and rotors. one year later and the problem was back. i have also noted that the stopping distance tends to increase when the grinding is taking place. i have also noted the softening brake pedal in my 2006 honda odyssey.

2006 honda odyssey rotor brakes problems! in the past 4 years i have replaced my rotor brakes and pads 2 times! honda did a courtesy replacement in 2007 after complaining to them that the brakes are making screeching sounds and when they found out that just after less than one year the rotor brake is warped. last oct 2009, during service check they said the rotor brake is cracked/warped again and we need to replace it and they cannot cover i had to pay. i used the van for work ( 8 miles one -way). i complained to honda dch oxnard and told them that the rotor brake and pads was just replaced in mid 2007 and how a van that is just used for work could have its rotor brakes fail in less than two years. they gave a lame excuse. please help. *tr

My 2006 honda odyssey has a soft spongy brake pedal, often going lower than the accelerator while braking, allowing the brake and accelerator to be depressed at the same time, making it difficult to brake while the engine is racing. this problem causes the odyssey to lurch forward, and could quite easily cause an accident. my dealer refuses to acknowledge the problem. *tr

The complaint is regarding the brakes (front) on a 2006 honda odyssey minivan. the chief complaint is a loud grinding sound and a spongy feeling in the brake pedal. stopping distance is also greater. problem was reported to honda dealer and front brake pads were replaced with different pads (around 15k - 18k miles). problem re-occurred again around 25k or so. took vehicle back to honda. their response was that i over heated brake rotors and warped them. i contacted honda of north america by telephone. they stood by their dealer and nothing was done. problem occurs on a regular basis during normal driving conditions. braking distance under emergency conditions (yielding for an ambulance) is poor. *tr

Just purchased a used 2006 honda odyssey ex on 8/14/08 which had passed safety inspection as required by state of missouri on 8/13/08. the brakes feel very soft and even on a normal straight road, it requires a lot more travel and pressure to be applied before it will come to a stop. just today on 8/16/2008, was in a near accident along olive blvd and fee road due to the brake travel was more than necessary. will be traveling out of country on 8/19/08 for 10 business days. once back, will seek out huey's honda advise. but from what see from consumers report, edmunds, odyclub, etc, there seems to be an issue with the abs modulator unit and/or master cylinder, i wonder what no recall has yet to be done on these vehicles. very disappointing especially if the aftermath would be an accident. *tr

I would have to agree with the owner that submitted odi case #:10169618 (see below), our 2006 odyssey is experiencing the same problem with the left front brake. it just so happens that i am taking it to the dealer tomorrow just because it has finally gotten to the point that my wife now notices it and can pin point where she believes it is coming from. honda dealers recommend at 15k as part of their minor service caliber lubrication. if this is such an issue with the calipers why don't they include this as a warranty checkup for the brake pads, instead they decide to charge us for their labor. this problem with the brakes as described below has happened around 8 different times over a span of 4 months. vehicle currently has 17k on it. case #10169618 the honda odyssey in question was purchased in the 1st week of january 2006 and had about 6000 miles on it. i noticed that the front brakes were making grinding noises while stopping. these noises are not so prominent when the brakes are applied mildly (as in the case of coasting to a stop), but are clearly heard inside the cabin when the brakes are applied a little more firmly (as one would do it to bring the vehicle to a halt quickly). i took the vehicle to a honda dealership to have this looked at. later in the day i was informed that and the front brake pads have been replaced and the rotors refinished due to a defect in the front brake pads. i have a reason to believe that there have been more cases of this happening and i would like to request nhtsa to look into whether this is a more prevalent problem than just a random incident. *nm

We purchased our honda odyssey in feb. of 2006. at 11,000 miles (nov.2006), i took the vehicle in for an oil change and a complaint of grinding noise coming from brakes. they replaced the pads and resurfaced the front rotors under warranty due to an internal service bulletin stating a defect in the brake pads. one year and two months later, the same grinding noise has returned and they are telling me i need to have the brakes resurfaced again or replace the rotors at my expense. who has this many brake problems in 2 years? i have spoken to other owners that have had the same issue. they don't have to replace their rotors yet, but i am thinking this is the beginning of a trend. i believe this is a prevalent enough problem that an investigation is in order. *tr

Purchased 2006 odyssey touring edition new in february 2006. at about 10,000 miles started hearing intermittent grinding noise and feeling steering wheel vibrate while braking. vehicle taken to honda dealers three times. first two times dealer stated they could not duplicate problem. took car to dealer at 30,472 miles. and the dealer stated the problem was with warped rotors, and that i could pay to have them machined smooth. took car to different dealer at 33,691 miles. they replaced front pads and machined rotors under warranty due to service bulletin being issued for brake noise. *ak

2006 honda odyssey had third brake failure. previous two times i didn't know if my foot had slipped off of brake slightly or if it was in fact a brake problem. the third time, there was a grinding noise associated with braking, and the van had an increased stopping distance. i had to pump the brake several times and push it hard to get any braking at all. i almost ended up in a busy street and was very scared that i couldn't stop. all three of the incidents happened while driving slow- maybe 10 miles an hour. i had it towed to the dealer, and they replaced the brake pads and rotors even though they couldn't duplicate the problem. however, they stated that these items should not have caused a problem with braking. i'm not confident that the issue has been resolved and am scared that it will happen again and that i won't be able to prevent a serious accident. *nm

The honda odyssey in question was purchased in the 1st week of january 2006 and had about 6000 miles on it. i noticed that the front brakes were making grinding noises while stopping. these noises are not so prominent when the brakes are applied mildly (as in the case of coasting to a stop), but are clearly heard inside the cabin when the brakes are applied a little more firmly (as one would do it to bring the vehicle to a halt quickly). i took the vehicle to a honda dealership to have this looked at. later in the day i was informed that and the front brake pads have been replaced and the rotors refinished due to a defect in the front brake pads. i have a reason to believe that there have been more cases of this happening and i would like to request nhtsa to look into whether this is a more prevalent problem than just a random incident. *nm

Brakes make severe grinding sound and steering wheel shakes violently when braking hard. also had a problem coming down a very steep hill where the brakes shook the car so badly we had to pull over to side of road. honda has said this is normal. replaced brake pads once, but says it will not again. have had the brakes checked several other times by other mechanics and they cannot pinpoint the problem. *tr
