Groaning sound from power steering system and steering wheel hard to turn at low speeds. took vehicle to honda dealer knowing other 2006 honda odysseys had power steering problems and that the warranty on just the power steering pump had been extended to 7 years and 100,000 miles. i hoped the issue was just the power steering pump and that the warranty would cover it. of course not! the problem is apparently in the steering rack and will require $1,200+ in repairs for a new one or the van will be a safety issue. i'm very suspicious that they have an extended warranty on the pump but not on the steering rack. since i don't want to lose steering while driving and cause an accident, i am forced to have this defective part repaired at my own cost. with only 55,000 miles on the van, this is not the kind of safety or quality i would have expected from honda. *tr

Engine whines and shakes steering wheel. first at 70000 miles. checked and added ps fluid. worked for a while. 73k started again. added more fluid. 75k replaced drive belt. 80k noticed increased noise (whining), but no shaking of the wheel. brought into dealer and they said there are many issues with others and honda extended warranty to 7 years, but no recall. mechanic stated that at high speeds (hwy), ps pump seal could fail, leak and cause loss of power steering and possible safety issue. called honda usa and they said yes to warranty, but no to safety campaign- how can they be so irresponsible!

My honda odyssey has a manufacture's defect associated with the power steering system. it has an inconsistent buzz, whine, hum that can be heard predominantly at lower speeds. at times, the steering becomes tight making it difficult to steer the car. i have read about the service bulletins: tsb 2007 for the steering reservoir, and tsb 2010 for the steering pump. i will be calling the local dealer with hopes of correcting a poor design by honda.

Occasionally during heavy rain, we loose our power steering for a period of 20-45 seconds or more. at the same time the battery warning indicator lights up. it is almost impossible to control the vehicle when this occurs. fortunately it has not happened in heavy traffic and have not had an accident as of yet. this is dangerous and could cause a very serious accident with serious injury or death. we have notified the honda dealer whom tried to remedy the problem by changing the power steering pump but this failed to solve the problem and the issue remains. the dealer has been unable to fix the problem.

I received a letter from the american honda dated summer 2011, regarding the warranty extension of the steering wheel is hard to turn at low speeds and engine rpm. the term is up to 7 years or 100,000 miles. i bought my van in august of 2006, however, since i drive almost 100 miles a day (home to work), i have more than 100,000. here is my concern, i have been complaining about this said problem (regarding the steering wheels is hard to turn) in the honda dealer in corona even before receiving this letter, but all they said that it could be related to cold weather. later on about 4 months ago, they said the power steering pump needs to be replace. right after i received this letter from american honda, i gave them a call and told them that i'm already having this problem before, and that this is a known problem, but i didn't do anything about it because i was broke. i asked them if i can bring my van to the dealer to have them replace the power steering pump eventhough my mileage now is more than what they want which is 100,000 miles. they said, they can't help me because they are strict on warranty extension. and, since my mileage is now 165,000 miles, they can't help me even if the years qualifies me. they said to contact my local dealer where i bought the car and where i bring my car for repair and see if they can give me a discount to fix it. the point is it is not fair for them to set a limit on their warranty because this is an obvious factory defect. they should have covered the odyssey 2006 regardless of the mileage because based on this letter, it is obvious that there is a lot of complains about it. i do not have the money to fix this problem, but i am hoping that by reporting this, we can consider this product defect as a recall.

Every time it is raining and car goes through a puddle the battery light comes on and the car looses power steering. has happened numerous times and when going to the dealership i was told that they could not duplicate the problem because it was not raining at the time. they stated they could replace the power steering pump & reservoir and it might fix the problem. this is very dangerous and seems to be happening on quite a few of the honda vehicles. i know another person who owns they exact same model and year and they are experiencing the same problem. last few times it rained power steering went out 5-7 times during a 20 min drive so the number of times is increasing.

Driving on 2 lane highway with my 3 kids in the van. the battery light comes on and i hear a few brief clunks from engine area. then i realize i have no power steering so i stop quickly at a safe spot. i look at the engine and see the accessory belt that drives power steering pump, alternator, and a/c is loose. i see that the outer ring on the crankshaft pulley is missing and only see rubber on its outside. it's over 100 deg.f outside and we're 10 miles from anything. i call a few towing companies and find one that can show up within an hour. we wait and also get a hold of a friend to pick us up after the tow truck shows up. they tow it to our local honda dealer. the dealer replaces the crankshaft pulley and drive belt. towing was $153.40 and repair at dealer was $349.56. losing power steering on narrow two lane highway going 55 mph is unsafe and the crankshaft pulley should not fail even at 111k miles. i have owned the van since new and have all proper maintenance done (preventatively replaced accessory belt before and timing belt and water pump).

Since early 2010, the steering pump in my 2006 odyssey has been making an intermittant whining noise. when it makes this noise, the steering wheel becomes difficult to turn. a few days ago it became bad enough to take in to the dealer for service. prior to taking it in, i noted that honda has 2 tech service bulletins for this issue, one to the replace the pump (dec 2010) and one to replace the steering fluid reservior (2009). the bulletin for the pump specifically stated that the pump design was insufficient to provide enough power for the steering system, and needed to be replaced by a higher power pump with a new part number. i called american honda to try to get this covered by honda as a safety issue and a known design defect (bad steering), they offered to pay for $250 out of a $750 total repair bill. my car is approximately 1 1/2 years out of warranty time limit, but under warranty mileage (35000). i feel this is definitely a safety issue (steering) and should be subject to a recall before a steering failure and someone gets injured or worse.

Steering wheel in honda odyssey 2006 malfunction. steering wheel locks and gets very tight at low speeds and cause van to get stuck in a position and one has to turn the wheel real hard or accelerate to change position. especially difficult when manouvering the van in parking lots or making sharp turns at traffic lights. at low speeds the power steering pump does not pump enough fluid according to dealer. the failure occurs always a low speeds and it leads to steering wheel getting stuck or becoming very tight to turn thereby causing the car to get stuck in one place. i reported the problem to honda and said this is manufacturing defect and a huge safety issue which needs to be addressed. all they did was state it is a manufacturing defect. i almost could not turn at the traffic signal and could have got hit by the car behind me a few days back and also could not turn into a street in traffic and almost got hit by another car behind me since i could not move. honda usa tells its consumers that they do not cover manufacturing defects leading to safety issues if vehicle is out of warranty. soon enough this is going to lead to a lot of steering issues and you can check the web with the search term honda odyssey 2006 steering issues and you will find many incidents as related to the power steering pump. steering is the crucial part of any vehicle and such callousness on part of honda defenitely calls for a investigation before we see a lot of accidents due a steering wheel getting stuck. the dealers diagnosis after check up was to replace the steering pump so that the pump will push enough fluid at low speeds and not cause the steering wheel to get stuck. there is a potential that this can also occur at high speeds but for me it happens a low speeds. honda also does not allow consumers to talk to senior persons for resolution and stated consumer has reached end of line once it hits their phone system.

Power steering failure. began during colder weather with whining noise from power steering when weather below 40 f. this occurred two years in a row. currently at slow speeds < 30 steering input is more difficult and requires much more effort to strain against the steering wheel. honda was contacted first year of whining and stated problem was due to cold weather. since then i have learned that three service bulletins have been distributed for same complaint. honda tsb 07-005 dated 01/26/07 then replaced by tsb 07-005 dated 06/17/08 then tsb 07-005 dated 08/21/09. this was a known complaint during my initial questions and now problem has gotten much worse. now i am being told vehicle is out of basic warranty and they will not cover under powertrain warranty. the tsb state directly on the honda bulletin this is caused by a defective power steering pump reservoir. my concern is the possibility at higher speed loosing steering input or control.

Driving car and the steering started to whine and screech very loudly. turned wheel in both directions and noise continued. shut car off and started again and the noise continued. went online and found out that a lot of 06' models have issues with the steering resevior design choking the steering motor. called the dealership, 50k on my van, and described the problem. the service tech new immediately what is was and suggested i replace the steering resevoir so has not damage the motor further at it was a $700 fix vs $85. asked how come this was not under recall as the resevoir had three (3) tech bulletins issued and 3 redesigns to solve th steering problem. said tech bulletings don't mean recalls and i was over the 36k warranty so i was on my own. i paid for the repair and the noise stopped.

I own a 2006 honda odyssey minivan, with almost 70,000 miles on it. i brought the car in last week for service regarding a moaning noise when turning the steering wheel, right or left. the technician later informed me that the power steering pump and its components are no longer working and needed to be replaced... $700 dollars later. after getting the parts replaced because of this pump going bad, i checked online and discovered this is a known issue and has been reported previously. i contacted honda north america, who informed me that the given life span of this part is approx 120-140 miles, and that would prorate me back 50% the cost of my service charge. this was very nice and i am awaiting the check in the mail. my issue is that if there is a know issue with this part, and it goes out at various mileage on these vehicles, it would be have been more appropriate to have the part recalled and replaced all together. am sure most people don't bring their cars in at the first instance they hear a noise, etc. since i have children and car pool others, i never take any chances with my car. it would be very disturbing if the car loss its power steering at a time when its was most needed, as to avoid a serious accident. thank you for your time. *tr

02/01/201001
Consistent loss of steering at slow speeds. only when accelerating will steering work, almost as if at idle or in parking lots, not enough power to steering unit transpires. it generally requires several additional moves in a parking lot to get out of a space, but somewhat dangerous in that you have to allow for car to roll, in order for steering to work. the most dangerous situation is when you're coming to a stop and when you reach 10mph or so, on the way to a stop, you don't have steering for those few seconds. it's dangerous in a parking lot if you have to turn suddenly. this has happened consistently since we've owned the vehicle, everyone i know here at the office, friends and family who own one, have complained of the same problem. a related issue is, with increasing frequency, the power steering unit emits a hissing sound, almost as if the belts are about to snap, similar to the noise american power steering unis made in the 80's and 90's. i believe the unit is not engineered properly for the vehicle. both of these have been persistent problems, shame on me for not reporting it sooner, perhaps it's the aura of honda that makes one believe they're perfect vehicles. they are far from it. *tr

At low speeds, the power steering pump on my 2006 honda odyssey ex-l looses all ability to turn. this is especially troublesome when trying to park. the only way to alleviate this is to put the transmission in neutral, apply a foot to the brake, and apply slight pressure to the throttle pedal. this obviously speeds up the power steering pump which allows me to turn the steering wheel. this is not a safe solution to perform for any reason. *tr

The van has drove terrible almost from the time we have bought it. it pulled very bad on the expressway to the left. it can change lanes all by itself, like autopilot. we took it in repeatedly, and all they would do is give it a front end alignment, and wouldn't test drive it or anything. finally over christmas week they tried and tried to fix it. they adjusted the engine cradle so it was heavier on one side then the other, they adjusted the tire pressure off 2 pounds on one side and tilted one tire 10 degrees off from the other ones. they also put long camber bolts in the engine cradle. well the van now drive worse then ever. they had a factory rep. drive it and before that they told me that they might have to fly in a engineer to try to fix it. he test drove it and said oh it drive like all 2006 honda odsseys. then we were told there was nothing more they could do. we are now going through the bbb to get our money back. we cannot believe how terrible we were treated by brighton honda dealership and by honda's customer service. don't buy a honda ever!!! if there is something wrong with it ever they wont and don't stand behind their vehicles!!! i bought this van for safety for my 3 small children and feel like we are driving a death trap. try driving a van that pulls to the left and then to the right on icy roads. fun!! *nm

A 1500 rpm, a vibration is felt on the steering wheel when moving under load (not coasting). this occurs every time at the engine speed (not at 1200 rpm or 1700 rpm). the dealer service department said that no problem was shown in the computer. i also complained that i was getting very poor mileage in town (less than 15 mph which i consider not acceptable). the vibration is my main concern since something may be out of balance and cause a failure. *jb

Purchased vehicle 5/23/06. vehicle has vibration in steering wheel since purchase. honda has balanced wheels twice without solving problem. i took vehicle to dealer 7/13/06 and asked for repair of defect under new car warranty. dealer refused and gave me a work order stating: honda representative had found, last time in, vibration to be normal at this time as per dpsm 999...in conversation with honda rep. he told me vibrations are not a defect but a characteristic of this vehicle. safety, excessive wear on mechanical components and degraded re-sale values are not an issue. it was also my responsibility prior to purchasing vehicle to test drive and determine characteristics and either to purchase or decline purchasing on that basis... it appears honda is attempting to shift the burden and expense of their defects on the consumer. *jb

My 2006 odyssey has been in the shop 3 times for this complaint. the power steering pump makes a very bad whining noise when the temps are cold. i would say below 50 degrees. when warm weather approaches, you do not hear it. it is very embarrassing to me. the van was purchased brand new in november 2006 with only 4 miles on it. i started having trouble about a month after it was purchased and it was taken back to the dealer where i purchased it which is an hour and a half drive from where i live and the service department claimed they could not duplicate the problem. i finally got tired of taking it back and forth putting additional mileage on my van that shouldn't be and just said i would deal with it. warm weather came and i didn't hear it anymore. well then comes cold weather and i starting hearing it again so this time i contacted american honda and the director for service and he met me half way and he heard the whining noise and stated this is a known problem for honda and they are not sure how to fix the problem. he stated they had put 6 new power steering pumps on another odyssey and could not fix the problem. well they replaced my power steering pump and about a month later it started making the noise yet again. i contacted the service director again and he said he would note it and i could get it fixed when i wanted to so i have now taken my van back to the shop to get it fixed again. i will be writing a certified letter to honda and will file the lemon law if need be. i have 3 kids and i really need my van and this has been the most unpleasant experience for me and my family. i bought a honda due to the reviews and ratings but i will think long and hard about it the next time.*jb

Engine started making a whining noise, mostly when turns were taken. i waited awhile until it just seemed to be getting louder, then continuous. the repair was done under warranty, however since they said that few cars are getting beyond 36,000 miles without needing a new one, when will this have to be replaced again? *nm

The power steering pump makes an intermittent loud whining noise when at idle, under power, and while turning. the problem comes and goes and only occurs when temperatures drop below 55 -60 degrees. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs in april 2006 but the problem could not be reproduced. after picking up the vehicle the problem began and i returned the vehicle to the dealer to positively identify the noise. pump pressure was check and determined to be normal. i was told that the pump was normal and no repairs were needed. through the warmer months of spring and summer the pump has made no noise. now that the weather is getting cooler the pump is again whinning. *nm

Power steering pump noise. led to harder steering during cold temperatures. two instances: 1) outside temp 20f degrees trying to make a u-turn in front of my house, had to use more force and effort than normal to stay in the u-turn. would have been a dangerous situation if there were cars on either side of the street. 2) outside temp below 30f degrees. drove to the mall 20 minutes away on the highway. when entering the parking lot the power steering pump noise was loud. as i tried to park in between two cars, encountered a slight increase in effort to direct the van properly and without hitting the cars on either side into the parking space. would have been a dangerous situation if there was someone standing to get into the car on either side. these incidents occurred sometime in dec and jan not sure of dates, but when it was cold outside. *tr

Any time when ouside temp drops below 40 deg farenheight and i drive my 06 honda odyssey i get a loud whining at idle and accerleration but more predominantly when turning left to right. after many visits to the dealer because which they could not reproduce the noise, i finally took it in first thing in the morning when the outside temp was below 40 deg for them to verify the noise. they concluded that it was the power stering pump and ordered a new one and installed it. three days later it was still making the noise and again the dealer could not reproduce the noise. so i again took it first thing in the am and they again confirmed the problem. they have since received a tsp bulletin on the problem and are going to try to order the necessary parts to fix my problem. this has been an ongoing problem for me for months and i will be sure to comment if this problem gets corrected.

Tl* - the contact has a 2006 honday odyssey. the contact stated that when the vehicle was traveling between 5 and 10 mph she heard a humming sound. also, while driving at faster speeds she could not hear the sound. the sound was sometimes like a power tool. the contact stated that itwas as if the engine was revving higher than the speed shewas driving. it only happened when the weather was cold, 40 degrees and below ,and usually after driving about 5 - 10 minutes. the contact made a recording and let the dealer see it, and t the dealer maintained that he could not hear the noise.
