Defect SummaryHonda is recalling certain model year 2008-2009 odyssey vehicles, the gas-filled struts that help to raise and support the liftgate of vehicles equipped with a power liftgate system may be prone to early life failures due to a manufacturing flaw. the flaw can result in a leak of the pressurized gas, leading to reduced strut performance.
Consequence SummaryStruts with diminished performance can lead to unexpected closure, increasing the risk of personal injury.
Corrective SummaryHonda will notify owners, and dealers will replace both power liftgate gas struts free of charge. the safety recall began on march 12, 2012. owners may contact honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009.

The investigation found that the liftgate struts were failing prematurely and at an abnormal rate in certain model year (my) 2008 honda odyssey touring and 2009 honda odyssey touring and ex-l model vehicles equipped with power-operated rear liftgates (note: my 2008 odyssey ex-l was not equipped with a power liftgate).unlike vehicles with non-powered (manual) liftgates, the subject vehicle's liftgate can be opened automatically (via the power liftgate motor) even when the struts are in a degraded condition and can no longer support it in the open position.consumers standing or accessing the rear cargo area under the liftgate and expecting the liftgate will stay open, can be struck when the liftgate unexpectedly drops, or can be trapped under the liftgate as it power closes, both of which can occur when the system detects and reacts to degraded struts.by contrast, users of a manual liftgate assist in lifting it, and thus notice the lack of support as the struts degrade.honda is conducting a recall to replace the liftgate struts in approximately 45,747 my 2008 and early my 2009 odyssey vehicles equipped with power liftgates built before a manufacturing change of the liftgate strut assembly that occurred on january 13, 2009 (see nhtsa safety recall no. 12v-062 for further details).the vehicles subject to the recall account for 101 complaints, 12 injuries, and 5,630 of the warranty claims shown above (i.e., the my 2009 and 2010 vehicles built after the manufacturing change experience lower failure rates).in addition, and based on consumer complaints to nhtsa, odyssey vehicles without power liftgates experience lower complaint and injury rates than the odyssey vehicles equipped with power liftgates (subject vehicles).the reports cited above can be reviewed online at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following identification (odi) numbers:10442027, 10441232, 10437461, 10432557, 10430420, 10429962, 10412908, 10401388, 10395475, 10390216, 10343678, 10336744, 10294156

On february 16, 2012, american honda motor company (honda) notified the nhtsa that it had decided a defect exists in certain model year 2008 through 2009 odyssey vehicles.gas-filled struts that help to raise and support the liftgate of vehicles equipped with a power liftgate system may be prone to early life failures due to a manufacturing flaw.the flaw can result in a leak of the pressurized gas, leading to reduced strut performance.struts with diminished performance can lead to unexpected closure, increasing the risk of personal injury.stabilus was identified as the manufacturer of these gas-filled strutsthis matter was assigned recall number 12v-062.in reviewing past records, rmd discovered similar recalls conducted by toyota, ford, and honda between 2006 and 2010.on february 18, 2010, honda notified the nhtsa of the same rear liftgate gas strut issue in its 2005 odyssey vehicles.this issue was given recall number 10v-055.on may 30, 2008, toyota motor corporation (toyota) notified the nhtsa of the same issue found in its 2004 through 2006 sienna vehicles.this issue was given recall number 08v-244.on march 6, 2006, ford motor company (ford) notified the nhtsa of the same issue found in its 2005 through 2006 freestar and mercury monterey vehicles.this issue was given recall number 06v-069.these three recalls did not originally identify the supplier of the gas struts, however, all three manufacturers have since confirmed that stabilus supplied the equipment at issue in each recall.the purpose of the eq is to write to stabilus and to contact any other company that might have purchased this equipment, notify them of this defect in any vehicles they manufactured, and to ensure thorough safety recalls are conducted where appropriate.

We own a 2009 honda odyssey that recently experienced failed gas struts in the hatch. as a result, my wife was struck in the head injuring her. honda agreed to repair even though it is out of the 36k miles warranty. there is a recall for the 2009 odyssey for the exact same failure mode, but only for the motorized hatch. (ours is not motorized). i would like you to look into the possibility of having honda increase the scope of the recall to include non-motorized hatches. the dealer took possession of the gas struts from the hatch as they indicated honda of america demanded the parts for their own research. i was not able to hold onto them. besides the obvious injury my wife incurred, my young toddler twins were also at risk if they happened to be near the hatch and it collapsed. *tr

The back hatch on my 2009 honda odyssey slams shut and will not hold. the hatch slams with incredible force and if any of my 3 kids are in the vicinity it could cause serious injury. a vehicle less than 2 years old should not have this type of issue. i have a full front to back warranty and apparently it does not cover the back hatch.

As i was unloading groceries from the rear of my van, the lift gate suddenly and unexpectedly dropped on me. i was not injured but if i had been a small child or a weak elderly person it could have had tragic results. the same problem occured when i tried to open the gate a second time while standing safely away from the vehicle. the problem seems to be with the stay assembly tailgate opener which keeps the gate in the open position. there was no problem earlier in the day when i loaded groceries into the van however..

My wife tried to open the (powered) liftgate via the handle. the liftgate would not open this way. when she tried the remote, it opened it apx 90 percent of the way. when it reached the apx 90 percent mark, it seemed that the motor opening it jammed and the gate came down quite quickly, falling unexpectedly on my wife's back. i researched this problem and saw that there is an open investigation on this same matter (nhtsa campaign id number: pe11034).

My 2009 honda odyssey rear liftgate will not hold open. given the weight of the liftgate, it could cause serious injury if the strut failed when the liftgate is open with people under it.
