Defect SummaryVehicle description: sport utility vehicles that are equipped with an anti-lock braking system (abs). the vehicles can experience extended stopping distances in certain types of braking events.
Consequence SummaryExtended stopping distance could result, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will provide a replacement computer algorithm for the abs that is based on the algorithm used in honda's my 2000 and 2001 vehicles, which have not had the problem. this campaign will be conducted in phases, with the my 1998 2wd vehicles covered first, since they have experienced the most problems. the manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule for this campaign. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.
NotesCustomers can also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

Problem with brake system of honda passports. there is a delay in stopping and car glides forward several feed even after brakes are applied. had this problem ever since purchasing the car but not as bad. always was told it is the nature of abs brakes to do that! took it to the dealership 3 times and they said they could not similiate the problem and that there was nothing wrong with the brakes. took it to an independant and he was able to find out the same problem with brakes in 2 hours! took it back to the honda dealership and they suddenly acknowledged that they had heard about the same problem from other customers. in each case were not able to pinpoint the problem, and basically honda not doing anything about it. then saw the other complaint reports in mycarstats.com and noticed this has been an ongoing and existing problem with honda. this is a serious safety issue and honda is deceiving the public by not being honest about its existence.*ak

I found out that the anti-skid brake system on my car had problems, which comes with a recall by national highway traffic safety. i contacted my dealer(honda) but i was told that my car is not covered. i read your recall history, which indicates that my car belongs to those having this problem lately. however, since the dealer is not willing to provide free service and parts as to my request, i have to report this issue to the appropriate dept. the found problem is when i was slowly driving this car and needed to press brake, but the car kept moving forward, which i did not feel the brake applied. i almost hit bypassing. it took unexpected long time to stop the vehicle. i believe that there must be problems existing with my car. *jb

I will be driving and my car will just shut off, i also have the extended stopping problem and braking causing me to manually steer. i have also had trouble with the car not starting or starting slowly. i was told there were several recalls before i purchased the car and they were repaired - the abs was done last year but the problem continues. i would like the abs replaced. i checked your website for outstanding recalls and found. i called the dealer and was told the abs was done 2/04 but the truck continues to have the same problem - extending stopping. i have had my passport 3 years and have only received one recall - but the problem currently exists ... extended stopping distance. the only recall sticker in the door is for the pedal. additionally, i have also had a problem with the truck turning off in the middle of a turn (forcing me to manually steer my car) 98v70 (describes it completely) my truck also refuses to start properly. it starts and then shuts off - sometimes it takes up to 3 times to turn on and stay on. (sb03-03-s003 describes this as well) since i cannot determine who performed the other recalls, how can i be certain they were done or done properly? my vehicle continues to have the identical problems associated with the following recalls: nhtsa campaign # 02i002001 - service brakes, hydraulic; anti-lock (5/29/02) 98v170000 - electrical system - wiring, front underhood (7/23/98) 98v170002 - electrical system - wiring front underhood (7/23/98) 00v058000 - suspension, rear (2/29/00) 97v206002 - other (11/11/97) i have not had any accidents as a result, but i am afraid to drive with my children in the car if my car just shuts off in the middle of a turn, or on the freeway and at low speed. i have also had it accelerate while on the freeway revving the engine constantly - these have all happened for the last 3 years with no recall notices.*jb

The incident dated 12/21/01 occured as the vehicle exited off the freeway in san pedro, ca. my brother was driving and was aware of the previous brake problems that have occurred in rainy conditions. the vehicle followed the offramp at 25 mph. we had ample distance between the us and the car in front. as the car came to a slow down, my brother stepped on the brakes but they did not work. there was a rumbling sound as the tires kept rotating. he veered over to the lane to our left so as not to hit the car in front of us. the vehicle continued to slide about 10 more feet on its own until my brother pulled on the emergency brake. as this was happening an 18 wheeler truck was approaching from behind us. fortunately he was able to stop, the screeching of his brakes was loud, and although our bumpers were touching no one or no vehcile was damaged. the other two incidents of the brakes locking up also occured in rainy conditions. the first happening on the day i bought the vehicle. again, fortunately no other car was in front of me or for sure i would hvae definitely had rear end collisions as my vehicle slid about 2 feet after the brakes were pressed. also, in very hot temperatures (90-100 degrees) the brakes when pressed make the vehicle rumble loudly to the point where the rear view mirror shakes for about 3 seconds. the other ongoing problem has been the screeching and squealing of the brakes from the day the vehicle was purchased. *ak

The problem that i started having with the truck at about 10000 miles is that the vehicle continues to accelerate on its own when i release the acellerator and press the brake. the problem has persisted for quite some time despite numerous trips to the honda dealership. in august of 99 i took the car into the honda dealership in albany, ga and they informed me that the problem was due to an electrical problem. they said it was fixed. i took the car into the same dealership in november of 2000. they kept the car for two days and said that they identified the problem and that the problem was with some of the electrical connectors. the problem was not fixed. the vehicle is currently at the honda dealership in newburg, ny where they have just informed me that they did not identify a problem with it. four days ago i nearlly ran over three women who live in my housing area because the truck would not stop when i attempted to. the only way that i was able to stop the forward movement of the truck was to quickly place the truck into neutral to disengage the transmission. there is a serious problem with this vehicle and i fear for the safety of my family and others.*ak

05/31/19981012/01/1997
On occasion when we step on the brakes, the car will suddenly accelerate. tho i have complained numerous times, honda cannot duplicate therefore will not do anything to resolve it. i am afraid someone is going to get killed with the car. still have 6 months before lease is up and they won't buy out the lease or take the car back. its very dangerous and i have witnesses who have seen it happen. twice we have had accidents with it, twice i've gone through lights, once i hit a sidewalk trying to park because it jumped. i have 3 children and am afraid one of them will be hurt. this is a safety issue i'm concerned about - and its like they don't care or believe me. i didn't know where else to turn. *ak

We ran into the back of another vehicle at an intersection. he was stopped and we attempted to stop. the brakes did not work and we continued to roll into the crv. we have reported this problem several time to the local honda dealerships. the problem is the brakes will randomly stop working even though we are applying maximum pressure, they will chatter as the dealer described it. they have acknowledged the characteristic but say we have to live with it. it supposedly is a design issue. the abs senses some wheel anomily and disengages the brakes and re-engages them rapidly but not rapidly enough and the vehicle contiues to go forward. we have rolled through stop signs, lights, into intersections, etc. this time into a vehicle. fortunately, we were not hurt but it only a matter of time until a major injury or death occurs. again the dealerships have acknowledged the characteristic but say they can do nothing to fix it because techinically it is not broken. a techinician said the fix is off the record and they disconnect the abs during service and do not connect it again giving regular brakes back without the abs. i requested this to be done but they cannot do it leagally. my insurance company is farmers insurance and the agent warren aldous is located in kemah/seabrook, tx area. *ak

Twice upon braking, a brake failure occured in which the brakes engaged and then suddenly the brakes seemed to release. this caused an additional 20 to 30 feet of additional vehicle travel on wet pavement. luckily there was no vehicle immediately in front of me otherwise a collision would have occured. it seems as though the abs system releases for too long. other abs systems i have driven in similar conditions on the same road did not present this problem. there was a constant rate of decelleration. this '98 rodeo had marked perceivable periods of decelleration and then acceleration (about 1 second) and then decelleration until a complete stop. this brake failure is extremely frightening. the road conditions were only wet.

I purchased this car in august, 1998 and from the begining, experienced brake noise problems. one dealer tried to fix the problem a number of times but gave up in the end and i was told that such brake noise is acceptable. my point at the time was that brake noise is symptomatic of a problem, a potentially safety-related problem (especially since we are dealing with brakes). i complained to the manufacturer, who agreed to extend the warranty on the brakes only from three years/36,000 miles to five years/60,000 miles. on september 16, 2000, i brought the car in to another dealer with brake shuddering and noise problems. the dealer found that the rotors and drums were out of spec and i spent $144 to have the rotors and drums turned. i tried to use my warranty but was told that the fix was maintenance and was not covered by the warranty. i again complained to the manufacturer but my complaint was denied. my contention is that a car of such young age and low mileage should not have to have its rotors and drums turned and that such a problem is indicative of a manufacturing defect which american honda refuses to acknowledge. *ak
