Noticed that fuel gauge is not working properly because it went empty even though i have a tank full of gas. i did some internet research and found out that this is related to a defective 'fuel sending unit'. it affects honda passports and isuzu rodeo vehicles . *tr

The fuel gauge would read the wrong reading. this caused the consumer to think the vehicle had gas when it didn't. the cause was not determined. *jb *nm

Approx 6 mo after purchase fuel gauge stopped working. shows empty w/ blinking light at all times, and i must record mileage between fill-ups so i don't run out of gas. haven't repaired as research shows this will cost over $600 and usually fails again. obviously a manufacturer's problem - should be recalled. *nm

1999 honda passport - fuel gauge continually reads empty when gauge reaches about 1/2 tank. have driven for over 200 miles on empty with gas light on as i calculate mileage instead of relying on the gauge. seems to be numerous reports on this issue - would like to see investigation and/or recall. very frustrating as i like the car. this is becoming the norm versus the exception. at first the fuel light would never come on when the tank was nearing empty. now it stays on pretty much all of the time. when i stop for gas, i have yet to put more than 10 gallons in; thus, i've only used one-half tank! *ak

I purchased a 99 honda passport from mazda of knoxville located in knoxville tn. the vehicle had 49000 mi. 3 days later it started making noise in the engine, and also the fuel gauge stopped working as well as the air conditioner. i called them back, they told me to bring it back to them. they kept it a week and a half. i picked it up and brought it home. they claimed to have done 3700 dollars worth of work to it to fix it. i returned home and 2 days later and had the oil changed, the people changing my oil asked me if the vehicle had been under water before, i said i didn? know. when i had the oil changed it started making noises again. i called them back and they said the noise was nothing to worry about, it is normal so this time they offered no help. said it was my problem. i continued to drive the vehicle and now not only is it making noise but it isn?t running right. it will not idle sometimes and other times it will idle at 4000 rpm to the point it sounds like it is going to explode. it has died on me a number of times in busy intersections and is only getting worse.

When the passport was purchased in may of 2002, the fuel light intermittently blinked. the problem was diagnosed by honda cars of concord (nc) as a "fuel sending unit." estimated cost, including labor was $500. i decided to keep track of fuel by calculating the mileage because this "wasn't a warranty problem" because i bought it "pre-owned." that problem was minor compared to what came next. i noticed the transmission acting funny by skipping and revving hard. when i took it in for the dealership to check the transmission fluid, (because you can't do this yourself), they informed me that the transmission needed to be replaced. i couldn't believe it. this vehicle has just under 47,000 miles ! after further investigation, i see where scores of others have the identical problem around the same amount of miles. no recall ??? since the car is now valued at less than the payoff because of the transmission problem (negative equity) i am forced to pay for a vehicle that has a short life left and very little mileage. please help me ! thank you, shannon bradshaw

Braking system malfunctioned, causing extended stopping distance. in one case, braking system was inoperative and resulted in a crash. dealer said occupant's foot slipped off brake pedal and hit gas pedal. previously, took vehicle to dealer for brake repairs. *ak the consumer had three brake failure incidents for which the dealer could not find the cause. during the fourth failure, the vehicle went out of control and crashed, causing damage. the dealer states that the consumer possibly stepped on both brake and accelerator at the same time. *yh abs light illuminated after accident. engine light illuminated due to manifold gasket leaking, dealer replaced it. *slc

Fuel gauge had not given accurate reading for 5-6 months. used honda repair facility's suggestion of gas tank cleaning to eliminate that possibility for cause of start failure. within the same tank full of gas, car stalled and wouldn't restart. repair facility finally determined ecu and fuel pump to be the cause. seems this is a recurring issue with the vehicle, and only informed people search out forums like this to report the problem.*jb

Original problem was fuel sensor, followed by cylinders being replaced, unresolved whining noise, recall on rear suspension, and now recall on head impact protection. car has constantly been in shop since purchase, and we have serious concerns about the overall safety and durability of this model. local dealer has been extremely helpful in trying to resolve problems, but overall quality and safety issues have us seeking answers from you as to what steps we can take to have vehicle replaced by manufacturer.

This is the third honda i have owned, but the only one with problems. the first two had over 300,000 miles combined....no problems. this really isn't even a honda, it is an isuzu. when i purchased the car, i was told that all parts inside and out were made by honda and that isuzu supplied only the seatbelts and the actual car frame. i have had the a/c blower replaced two times, the first time was under warranty. after the first replacement, the cd player stopped working and then the car started experiencing electrical problems. when i turned on the blinker, the a/c went out along with the auto transm. spent over $150 plus cost of rental car and honda said the probl. was with the trailer hitch. i did not pay for repair...they wanted over $600...however, when the car was given back, mysteriously the cd player begain working and so did the a/c...checked and they replaced the blower (although they said they didn't do anything) as soon as i picked up the car...no more problems during that time. a year later (no longer under warranty) the a/c blower works intermittenly, the transmission today just started to manually shift itself from 2 to 3rd gear and makes a hard clunking sound. a few months ago, it was shifting itself from drive to neutral or low and then back to drive. also, the fuel sending unit is inoperable...the tank registers empty and the light flashes constantly. heard this is a known problem for isuzu rodeos and passports. i even work with someone who has a 99 rodeo and has the same problems, but his fuel sending unit went out while he was under warranty. the honda dealer down here wants over $600 for repair. i feel mislead. i purchased honda due to success on my other two hondas. i could have saved over $10,000 and purchased an isuzu rodeo, but i thought by purchasing a honda, i was getting a reliable suv. i will never purchase another honda/isuzu again...i have gotten no support from the honda dealers. too many problems with this model!

Fuel system problem: fuel gauge frequently has begun to drop to a reading of zero when the car is not moving but running. the reserve light will blink and the fuel gauge will not show any fuel reading until the car begins moving again. it can take several minutes before a correct reading is shown. intake manifold system failure: date and mileage is approximated, will locate records with exact date and mileage. both left and right side intake manifold gaskets were reported as cracked by the dealer and replaced at a charge of $400 (not under warranty). engine idled roughly and stalled prior to repair. tsb from honda is available.

Noticed that fuel gauge is not working properly because it went empty even though i have a tank full of gas. i did some internet research and found out that this is related to a defective 'fuel sending unit'. it affects honda passports and isuzu rodeo vehicles . my suv honda passport fuel gauge is not working due to bad float chamber on the pump component has manufacturing defects. my fuel gauge has started fluctuating wildly. the most common thing though, is that it reads out of gas shortly after a fill up. this is the same model as an isuzu rodeo and the problems are duplicated there. i want to make sure a recall happens and that it covers the hondas as well.

The fuel gauge does not work properly. reads empty at least 11 gallons before truly is empty. this is a manufacturer's defect. running out of gas is not safe as well as the harm it does to the vehicle. many complaints from other consumers about the same problem. *ak

Consumer noticed the fuel gauge always read empty. the consumer contacted the dealer about the problem and was told the problem could be fixed at the owners expense. the consumer felt this was a manufacturers defect and should not have to pay anything. please provide details. *ph

The fuel gauge reads empty on my vehicle even when the tank is completely full. this condition has existed for over 60,000 miles and i have not had it serviced because the dealer wants $700 for parts and labor and informed me that they will be using the exact same parts that might fail again.

Your technical service bulletin #202, of feb 16, 2002, explains a problem i have with my 1999 honda passport, where the fuel gauge reads an empty or low fuel warning, even when it is not in danger of being empty. the correction will cost in excess of $500.00. this is an outrageous condition and repair to require the owner to cover, when it is obvious it was a defect when manufactured. please help to correct manufacturer over sights like this when selling a long-term item like a car or truck. i am very happy with my vehicle otherwise, and would hate to help blemish the reputation of honda and it's products. but this is unacceptable as a failure due to normal wear and tear. *jb
