Defect SummaryVehicle description: sport utility vehicles that are equipped with an anti-lock braking system (abs). the vehicles can experience extended stopping distances in certain types of braking events.
Consequence SummaryExtended stopping distance could result, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will provide a replacement computer algorithm for the abs that is based on the algorithm used in honda's my 2000 and 2001 vehicles, which have not had the problem. this campaign will be conducted in phases, with the my 1998 2wd vehicles covered first, since they have experienced the most problems. the manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule for this campaign. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.
NotesCustomers can also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

Abs system has been a problem since we bought this truck. the last time it was in the repair shop at honda dealer it was for the recall of 7/2003 regarding the changing of the abs system after the work was done we had the abs light coming on and the brakes engaging on dry payment. now they tell us that the wire harness under the truck is broken and making the abs system come on . thjis repair will cost close to 300.00 dollars to fix. the service man at the dealership told us that it was broken because of the way it was designed . since we have owned this truck it has been into the honda dealshipper a total of 8 times in regards to the abs system.we have also had the whole horn/airbag system replaced (under the goodwill warrenty) and after that had to have the fuel pump assembly replaced which we had to pay over 300.00 dollars for at 38253miles just over warrenty.

This is the third honda i have owned, but the only one with problems. the first two had over 300,000 miles combined....no problems. this really isn't even a honda, it is an isuzu. when i purchased the car, i was told that all parts inside and out were made by honda and that isuzu supplied only the seatbelts and the actual car frame. i have had the a/c blower replaced two times, the first time was under warranty. after the first replacement, the cd player stopped working and then the car started experiencing electrical problems. when i turned on the blinker, the a/c went out along with the auto transm. spent over $150 plus cost of rental car and honda said the probl. was with the trailer hitch. i did not pay for repair...they wanted over $600...however, when the car was given back, mysteriously the cd player begain working and so did the a/c...checked and they replaced the blower (although they said they didn't do anything) as soon as i picked up the car...no more problems during that time. a year later (no longer under warranty) the a/c blower works intermittenly, the transmission today just started to manually shift itself from 2 to 3rd gear and makes a hard clunking sound. a few months ago, it was shifting itself from drive to neutral or low and then back to drive. also, the fuel sending unit is inoperable...the tank registers empty and the light flashes constantly. heard this is a known problem for isuzu rodeos and passports. i even work with someone who has a 99 rodeo and has the same problems, but his fuel sending unit went out while he was under warranty. the honda dealer down here wants over $600 for repair. i feel mislead. i purchased honda due to success on my other two hondas. i could have saved over $10,000 and purchased an isuzu rodeo, but i thought by purchasing a honda, i was getting a reliable suv. i will never purchase another honda/isuzu again...i have gotten no support from the honda dealers. too many problems with this model!

My 1999 honda passport's abs light remains illuminated after it's self diagnostic test. i have taken it to the dealer who indicated that diagnostic codes require the main abs computer module to be replaced. when the light is lit, the abs system is inoperative. this is a safety hazard. the light occaisionally does go off after self diagonostics, about 2% of the time. honda claims there is no recall on this vehicle, even though isuzu indicates that their rodeo, which is the same vehicle and model year does have a voluntary recall in place for faulty abs module, which althouhg it appears unrelated to this problem, would also solve this problem as the abs module is replaced in this safety campaign.

After a major service maintenance schedule performed by moses honda, 6018 u.s. 60 rt. east of barboursville, i noticed a severe depletion of brake pedal on my 1999 honda passport while stopped at a traffic light. i immediately took the vehicle to moses auto service and explained what was happening. the service manager had a technician to inspect the vehicle and subsequently added brake fluid. the service manager explained more attention would be available on my next service date. after my next service date no mention of the brake problem was addressed. on november 23, 2004 i was traveling west on rt. 60 and passed through a traffic light at exit 15 i-64 and was confronted by a gray van suddenly stopped. i immediately thrust my foot on my brakes, to no avail. i subsequently collided with the vehicle in front of me. it was a horrifying experience with the operation of the airbags, smoke and noise. there was a cabell county deputy sheriff near the scene who did the reporting and investigation. later that same day i once again passed through the accident scene and discovered no tire skid marks. this has aroused my suspicion about the brakes. the vehicle is stored at paul's garage. 6141 childers rd. barboursville, wv ph.304-736-4531. i would like for your office to investigate this vehicle for brake failure before repairs begin. thank you, james h. parsons

I purchased a 99 honda passport from mazda of knoxville located in knoxville tn. the vehicle had 49000 mi. 3 days later it started making noise in the engine, and also the fuel gauge stopped working as well as the air conditioner. i called them back, they told me to bring it back to them. they kept it a week and a half. i picked it up and brought it home. they claimed to have done 3700 dollars worth of work to it to fix it. i returned home and 2 days later and had the oil changed, the people changing my oil asked me if the vehicle had been under water before, i said i didn? know. when i had the oil changed it started making noises again. i called them back and they said the noise was nothing to worry about, it is normal so this time they offered no help. said it was my problem. i continued to drive the vehicle and now not only is it making noise but it isn?t running right. it will not idle sometimes and other times it will idle at 4000 rpm to the point it sounds like it is going to explode. it has died on me a number of times in busy intersections and is only getting worse.

We rear-ended the car infront of us because the anti-lock brake system engaged when there was no reason to do so. we were stopped at an intersection on a hot, clear day, when the light turned green and the car infront of us moved into the intersection, turning left, stopping to let oncoming traffic pass. i was prepared to slow down and stop to allow the traffic to pass. as i applied pressure to the brakes, we heard a noise come from the engine compartment, and proceded to rear end the vehicle infront of us. unfortunately, i only carried liability coverage on the truck, so i was facing having a non-operable vehicle or a $3,500 bill to fix the damage to the front of the truck. we made several claims to honda of america, which were processed, but in the end, the stated that they would assume no liability (must have stepped on the accelorator i was told). i am setting up an email account to pool our resources, information, stories and results together. please email me if you would like to see my letters to and from honda of america at passport_brakes@yahoo.com. i would like to hear how other people have dealt with this issue. *ak

I have experienced multiple failures of the abs system since purchase. the problem was intermitnt and generally at speeds of less than 20 mph on dry roads. i would estimate no fewer than 25 failures in two years wherein the brakes fail to engage properly at low speed causing the vehicle stopping distance to be excessive. when braking, the brakes often failed to engage particularly at rough intersections. it feels as if the vehicle slides over the bumps. now the abs light came on and remains lit. the abs unit itself runs even with the motor off. i have removed the fuse and disengaged the abs which allows the vehicle to operate safely although there is no abs active. with the abs disengaged, i have had no additional problems. i believe this is a very dangerous and common safety defect with the 1999 passport. there are a significant number of similar complaints to nhtsa and on the web which indicate this to be a manufacturer defect. i understand that this defect is currently under investigation and i would recommend fast-track recall action to avoid accidents related to this defect.*ak

Anti-lock brakes regularly release/fail while braking and traveling over large bumps. an example: while braking downhill to make a right turn, i traveled over a large bump in the asphalt. the brakes disingaged even though i will still pressing on the peddle. i had to remove my foot and re-engage the brakes. this has happend to me for times, and is well known among late model passport and rodeo owners.*ak

My abs brakes failed when i was pulling up to a red light in the rain causing me to rear-end another driver. the approximate speed was less than 20 mph, and my passport pulled to the right as i was stepping on the brake. the check engine light came on blinking prior to impact after i had stepped on the brake, and went solid after i hit the other driver. i took the car into the honda dealership who has been servicing my vehicles for over 4 years. they have determined that the check engine light was not related to the accident, and was caused by the master cylinder resetting itself. they find no issue with the brake system, and say there isn't a defect. however, i was driving home from the accident and the brakes failed to engage 2 more times with a pull to the right. both times were on wet roads in drizzle conditions when the vehicle was going less than 20 miles per hour. this occured again, same weather conditions on 1 november, again with the car going less than 20 mph and again pulling to the right. this situation cannot be reproduced when the weather conditions are dry, and sometimes cannot be reproduced in the rain either. in the accident of 27 october, the bumper of the passport was damaged more on the front right than on the left. which supports the stick and slide that i have felt each time the brakes fail to engage. i would like to know if anyone else has had this problem, and if so, what can i do to fix it? i don't feel safe or trust my car anymore while driving.*ak
