Defect SummaryIsuzu is recalling certain model year 1998-2002 isuzu rodeo and model year 2002 isuzu axiom vehicles, and honda is recalling certain 1998-2002 honda passport vehicles, that were originally sold, or are currently registered, in the states of maine, new hampshire, vermont, massachusetts, rhode island, connecticut, new york, new jersey, pennsylvania, delaware, maryland, the district of columbia, west virginia, ohio, indiana, michigan, illinois, wisconsin, minnesota, iowa, missouri, and kentucky. vehicles that have experienced sustained exposure to highly corrosive materials used in some jurisdictions for road deicing purposes may experience excessive corrosion in the vicinity of the forward mounting point bracket for the left or right rear suspension lower link prior to the time that such corrosion would normally be expected.
Consequence SummaryExcessive corrosion may result in the left or right rear suspension lower link bracket becoming detached from the frame, which can affect vehicle handling and potentially cause a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area. for vehicles in which little or no corrosion is found, the area will be treated with an anti-corrosive compound. for vehicles in which corrosion has damaged the rear suspension lower link bracket and affected its connection to the vehicle frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. in the rare event the corrosion is so severe that the reinforcement bracket remedy would not be appropriate, isuzu and honda will develop an appropriate remedy. all inspections and remedies will be provided free of charge for vehicles that are 10 years old or less. for vehicles older than 10 years, isuzu will offer a free remedy, but only if the vehicle is presented to an isuzu service facility, or honda dealer (as applicable), dealer within 12 months of when owner notifications were issued. the safety recall is expected to begin early december 2010. isuzu owners may contact isuzu at 1-800-255-6727. honda owners may contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.

During preliminary evaluation pe09-030, isuzu motors america, inc (isuzu) noted two primary differences once the rear suspension lower link separation occurs between the alleged defect (separation of the lower link from the frame) of this investigation and a safety defect involving lower link separation from the rear axle addressed by isuzu in safety recall 00v-058.in the case of the defect condition identified in recall 00v-058, isuzu stated that the attachment bolt could detach fully, causing separation of the lower link from the rear axle possibly creating a loss of vehicle control. isuzu also stated that this condition occurs early in the service life of the vehicle.in this investigation isuzu noted lower link separation from the frame is a progressive corrosion issue with prior warning to consumers.isuzu also stated that in the event of a lower link separation from the frame, the vehicle is still controllable and can be safely stopped. the office of defect investigation (odi) analyzed complaint data provided by isuzu and america honda motor company, inc (honda), as well as vehicle owner questionnaires submitted to odi from consumers.in total, there were 60 unique reports of lower link separations from the frame including 1 alleged crash and 7 loss of vehicle control incidents that may be related to the alleged defect.most of these complaints indicated that there was no warning prior to the link separation.preliminary evaluation pe09-030 has been upgraded to an engineering analysis to further assess the scope, frequency and risk to motor vehicle safety of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles.

The driver's side linkage that connects the rear axle to the frame separated completely due to corrosion. i took it to honda for the recall, which service bulletin 10-079 states honda will pay for vehicles less than 10 years old at the time of the recall (sept 2010)), and they determined the damage was so bad that they would not attempt to fix the vehicle. i feel i should be reimbursed for my vehicle since the defect has caused such extensive damage as to render the vehicle unsafe. *tr

My vehicle is a 2001 honda passport 4x4 v6 with 73,000 miles. the frame broke right where the bracket for one of the arms in the rear suspenion connects. this caused me to lose control.

I was driving my 2001 honda passport when it started jerking to one side after letting off the gas,but only slilghtly, like wind had hit the car all of a sudden. this went on for a couple days, and when i was going around a turn,i heard a loud noise, like something breaking and grinding, and the car started to shimmy all over the road. when i had it looked at,i was told its unfixable because there is frame rot where the rear suspension lower link completely rotted off the frame and the a-arm also completely rotted off. there are swiss-cheese like holes all through the frame. it is now undriveable. according to my research this is a known issue, and a possble recall. i very strongly agree that there should be a recall or class action lawsuit. i was very luck y that we were only going about 10 mph when it happened,or there could have been a serious crash. this is obviously a manufacturer error.

I was driving on a straight 2-lane state route. while crossing an intersecting 4-lane highway, i heard a small noise in the rear. immediately after crossing the intersection, i experience entire loss of control of my vehicle. i swerved from side to side while attempting to slow down and was sure the vehicle was going to roll over on its side. after slowing to a stop, i was on the opposite side of the road in a small turn-around facing the opposite direction. i did not attempt to drive any further and called for a tow. the tow-driver indicated that he saw the problem and took me to the driver side of the vehicle. he then showed me the rear link bar had disconnected from the frame. it appeared it had rusted away from the frame. we then looked on the passenger side to see that it was also rusted very badly was also ready to break away from the frame. when my life flashed before my eyes, all i could do was pray and be thankful that my children were not in the vehicle with me and that my newly licensed 17 year old was not driving at the time. i am in the process of contacting honda of america customer relations to be advised as to their stance on this issue. *tr

Frame rusted through causing control problems; back traction bar rotted off. frame above wheels completely rotted out to three feet each side of wheel. steering wheel at odd position. possibly shifting whole back axle. are told nothing can be done and dealership neglects to return calls and emails regarding problem even though they had completed work on the brakes and other repairs during the last year leading us to think they should have noticed a problem. *tr

2001 honda passport exl isuzu mfg in aug 2000. purchased used in nov 2004, was leased to 1 person, then at end of lease auctioned to place i bought from. front brake pads and rotors replaced 1 month after purchase. check engine light goes off 1 month after purchase. exhaust flange replaced 1 month after purchase. 3 months after purchase fuel indicator goes wacky, check engine light goes off and on. 1 year after purchase engine dies, intercooler was culprit, only 76,000 miles on vehicle. transmission was found to have a leak, the right servo rubber seal was replace. exhuast has leak at or up to y pipe area. something underneath is cracked severly. i am depressed, as i paid $19,000 am stuck paying $31,000 in long run through financial institute, and can't do anything with negative equity, and bad credit history. dealership refused to fix problems when first purchased and still refuses to offer financial relief. warranty co. and financial institute are just as uncaring. i was made to believe it was a sturdy, long lasting vehicle, and have since found out otherwise. oil is big problem, have to feed it half to 3/4 qt. every 2 days. gas consumption is poor, can only go 110 mi. per fill up. oil, oil filter and air filter are changed on regular basis. shocks are the pits, takes bumps hard, and feels like it is going to break in the rear. also known problem is the rear clunk, thump on stop and go, is caused by a item underneath that turns. could of been killed when engine died on major highway, but was able to roll off to shoulder before ceasure. i consider major depression from this a injury. *nm
