EA11012Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)09/12/201109/17/2012Low Beam Headlights Stop Illuminating12V136000
This investigation was prompted by preliminary evaluation (pe) 11-017, and was based on reports from consumers alleging that both low beam headlights stopped illuminating simultaneously.some complainants also reported that the combination switch (switch) that controls the headlights and turn signals, and/or its electrical wiring harness connector were damaged by overheating.odi's pe information request letter asked honda for certain data on model years (my) 2002-2006 cr-v, 2003-2008 pilot, 2003-2008 element, 2001-2005 civic, and 2000-2001 s 2000 vehicles.analysis of complaint and honda data show that a complete low beam headlight circuit failure occurs in models with 2-bulb headlight systems (i.e., a single bulb on each side for high and low beam).models with 2-bulb systems include my 2002-2004 cr-v, 2003-2005 pilot, 2001-2003 civic, and 2003-2008 element.models with 4-bulb headlight systems (i.e., two bulbs on each side, one for high and one for low beam) have different electrical circuits for the headlights and do not experience the same failure mechanism as the 2-bulb system.my 2000-2001 s 2000 models with 2-bulb high intensity discharge headlights also have different electrical circuits for the headlights and do not experience the same failure mechanism.honda introduced the 4-bulb headlight system in cr-v in my 2005, in pilot in my 2006, and in civic in my 2004.on march 29, 2012 honda submitted a defect information report (dir) to recall 554,428 vehicles, including my 2002-2004 cr-v and my 2003 pilot.in the dir, honda stated that tension from the combination switch wiring harness to the electrical terminal for the low beam headlight circuit could cause a small amount of motion as the combination switch was operated.this motion, over time, can wear the surface of the terminal creating copper oxide, increasing electrical resistance, which may cause the terminal to melt within the harness connector.odi continued its investigation, and on august 31, 2012 honda submitted another dir to recall an additional 820,789 vehicles.this report included the my 2002 civic vehicles which were not subject to a prior safety recall (04v-086) for headlights, all of my 2003 civic, and my 2004-2005 pilot.honda's dir advised that operation of the turn signal switch lever at high speed and/or with heavy force can cause movement between the combination switch body and the sub-harness wiring connector.this can cause wear and continued movement can create copper oxide, increasing electrical resistance, and potentially causing the terminal to melt within the harness connector. please see both dirs at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/ under safety recall 12v-136 for complete details.honda also provided additional information on the element model, stating that it was not recalled due to it's very low failure rate.honda sold 301,497 element vehicles in the united states and received 17 reports, while odi received one report (see voq 10395219).honda's technical explanation for the low rate, which was submitted under request for confidentiality, is that the headlight switch, as installed in the element, reacts differently to the forces applied to it as compared to the recalled models.see attachment for additional information.

I was trying to leave from work and when i tried entering the key it got stuck half way. i removed it and tried again and the key went it but would not turn. i had to try many times and then called my husband, he said to take the key out and wait couple minutes then try again. i did what he said and after the second try it finally turned. since that date i keep having the same problem and i recently received a recall letter and thought since its a recall honda would repair at no cost to me. well to my surprice i just found out that this is not part of the recall and will have to pay for them to repair. the recall i received siad the interlock lever in the ignition switch may become deformed. :(

Unable to turn key in ignition. apparently this is an issue that many 2003 honda pilot owners are having. this can be a safety issue as it can leave someone stranded in a remote area as happened with me. if the malfunction is caused by a faulty part then honda should bare some of the responsibility and cost to correct the problem. *tr

After loading my pilot, tried to put the key in the ignition switch but it did not go easy on the switch and once in the switch it did not turn on the ignition. i tried several times and or use the spare key until the ignition switch worked. since july 16, 2012, everytime i start my pilot, i have the same problem. i have to keep my spare key all the time to avoid the issue on having to reenter the ignition switch. everytime i forget to keep the spare key on the ignition switch i have to spend about 20 minutes to try to reengage my key in the ignition switch to have it work. *tr

The key would not fit into the ignition without forcing it several times, after a few weeks, the key would not even turn. the vehicle was serviced and the cylinder and ignition switch were replaced at the cost of the owner. this is a very common problem with this model. honda corporation should be held responsible for it. *tr

I was unable to start my car due to faulty ignition switch. i was stranded, with my kids, and in the cold-unable to even run the heat. the key issue was reported to honda and i was waiting for help from the company due to the known defect in the key/ignition tumblers, as widely reported to me by a locksmith and a dealer. honda has been unwilling to issue a recall notice regarding this defect. *tr

2003 honda pilot ignition - at first we were having issues inserting the key into the ignition. then it progressed to needing to jiggle the key in order to get it to turn to any position of the ignition. the key would go in but it'd take several attempts, of a minimum of 10 to 15 minutes, before we could get the ignition to start. we read the manual and understood the importance of keeping the wheels straight - that seemed to help for a few attempts. now the key goes in but doesn't turn at all. with everything that has been documented about this issue from honda customers and the volume of customers it is affecting why isn't honda doing the 'right thing' and issuing a voluntary recall?! *tr

Having trouble inserting key into ignition. have to try multiple times, turning the key upside down, right side up, repetitive in & out, eventually it goes in, but afraid that eventually it will not work. called american honda as i saw multiple complaints online, but honda said they never heard of this problem and that it's not widespread enough for them to take notice. i'm afraid that i will not be able to get the key to work, so will take it to honda dealership for repair (apparently only dealership has to fix it because new keys will need to be programmed. there are 2 different choices for cost, one to just replace the ignition and get new keys, and another choice is to also change the door locks so that the new keys will open the door.) if you're havnig the same problem, please log a complaint so that it becomes widespread enough to take notice and may be those of us who pay/paid to get this issue repaired can get a refund. thank you!

I inadvertently turned the ignition switch off with the transmission still in drive, and i was able to remove the key from the ignition. i then exited the car. the car started to roll backward as i was passing behind it, so i had to unlock the door and climb back into the moving vehicle and apply the brake. this same failure warranted recalls for 2003 accords, civics, and elements, but so far not for pilots. i wonder if the interlock mechanism is common among all these different models, and if so, why honda wasn't required to issue a recall for the pilot, also? the designs must be very similar for so many models to be experiencing the same failure.

Low beam headlights symptom when you turn the combination light switch to the headlight on position, the low beams may not come on. probable cause in a rare case, the wire harness may have been misrouted, causing a terminal in the headlight wire harness connector to become heat-damaged, which may cause the low beam headlights to not come on.

I have a 2003 honda pilot with dvd player and wireless headphones. my wife and i were driving on the highway with our two young kids who were watching a dvd with the headphones. the kids stated that the headphones stopped working and started making a white noise sound. a few minutes later we saw smoke come out of the dashboard, through the tape deck and other openings. we were scared to death and had limited visability. fortunately, i was able to pull over without wrecking. we all got out of the car and let the smoke clear. afterwards, we took it to the charleston, sc dealership. even though they found burnt parts in the dvd player, they refused to help. they wanted over $1000 to put in a new dvd player. we took the paperwork and left, while the dvd headphones still do not work to this day. i even filed a complaint with the bbb, without success.

Vehicle will not accept key, after playing with it finally get the key into the ignition, but will not start. play and play with ignition and car finally starts. take to honda dealership in el cajon ca , they say because of weight of keys, have a total of 3 keys on my chain, that it has worn out the key and the tumblers in the ignition. they make a new key, it goes right in but the ignition is still not turning over, have to get a ignition. they replace the ignition but now i have two heavy honda keys because the new ignition is a sidewinder and it comes with a key that they can't program to fit the doors. now my key chain is heavier than before. this cost me $850.00. *tr

Beginning about 1-1-1995, i have had eleven (11) incidents of the brake-light solenoid failing. this has occurred in my 1995 accord (6 times), 2001 accord (3 times), and 2003 pilot (2 times). i currently own the 1995 accord and the 2003 pilot. in all instances the brake lights will not work and the transmission will not shift out of park. when someone is with me and i am stationary, i have them check the brake lights to see if they work when i apply the brake, and they don't work at the same times i can't shift out of park. tomorrow morning the pilot goes back to the shop to get the solenoid replaced for the second time. my dealer has reported this to honda but they don't seem too interested in trying to find a permanent fix to the problem. hopefully others will report similar instances so we can get some corrections made. besides the annoyance of not being able to shift out of park, i don't know how many times i have almost been rear-ended because the brake lights didn't work while traveling. *jb

All right. enough is enough. honda now wants us to believe that every rodent has now become aware that a honda pilot or some odysseys is a great place to hang out, especially right next to the knock sensor wire harness. i find it amusing how all of those little varmint must have their own laptops and communicate with each other that this is the best place to be and also the best tasting part of the vehicle. what a joke. we took our 2003 pilot in and they charged us $450 dollars ($4.33 for the part) the rest of it was labor. it took the mechanic exactly 50 minutes to do the work. we watched and got charged for the 3.5 hours labor. there obviously needs to be a recall here!!!!!!!*nm
