EA11012Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)09/12/201109/17/2012Low Beam Headlights Stop Illuminating12V136000
This investigation was prompted by preliminary evaluation (pe) 11-017, and was based on reports from consumers alleging that both low beam headlights stopped illuminating simultaneously.some complainants also reported that the combination switch (switch) that controls the headlights and turn signals, and/or its electrical wiring harness connector were damaged by overheating.odi's pe information request letter asked honda for certain data on model years (my) 2002-2006 cr-v, 2003-2008 pilot, 2003-2008 element, 2001-2005 civic, and 2000-2001 s 2000 vehicles.analysis of complaint and honda data show that a complete low beam headlight circuit failure occurs in models with 2-bulb headlight systems (i.e., a single bulb on each side for high and low beam).models with 2-bulb systems include my 2002-2004 cr-v, 2003-2005 pilot, 2001-2003 civic, and 2003-2008 element.models with 4-bulb headlight systems (i.e., two bulbs on each side, one for high and one for low beam) have different electrical circuits for the headlights and do not experience the same failure mechanism as the 2-bulb system.my 2000-2001 s 2000 models with 2-bulb high intensity discharge headlights also have different electrical circuits for the headlights and do not experience the same failure mechanism.honda introduced the 4-bulb headlight system in cr-v in my 2005, in pilot in my 2006, and in civic in my 2004.on march 29, 2012 honda submitted a defect information report (dir) to recall 554,428 vehicles, including my 2002-2004 cr-v and my 2003 pilot.in the dir, honda stated that tension from the combination switch wiring harness to the electrical terminal for the low beam headlight circuit could cause a small amount of motion as the combination switch was operated.this motion, over time, can wear the surface of the terminal creating copper oxide, increasing electrical resistance, which may cause the terminal to melt within the harness connector.odi continued its investigation, and on august 31, 2012 honda submitted another dir to recall an additional 820,789 vehicles.this report included the my 2002 civic vehicles which were not subject to a prior safety recall (04v-086) for headlights, all of my 2003 civic, and my 2004-2005 pilot.honda's dir advised that operation of the turn signal switch lever at high speed and/or with heavy force can cause movement between the combination switch body and the sub-harness wiring connector.this can cause wear and continued movement can create copper oxide, increasing electrical resistance, and potentially causing the terminal to melt within the harness connector. please see both dirs at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/ under safety recall 12v-136 for complete details.honda also provided additional information on the element model, stating that it was not recalled due to it's very low failure rate.honda sold 301,497 element vehicles in the united states and received 17 reports, while odi received one report (see voq 10395219).honda's technical explanation for the low rate, which was submitted under request for confidentiality, is that the headlight switch, as installed in the element, reacts differently to the forces applied to it as compared to the recalled models.see attachment for additional information.

Key can be removed from the ignition when the transmission isn't in park. the issue has caused the vehicles to roll away, but no one has yet been inured. the dealer is requesting $750 to fix the issue; however, i see honda has already recalled over 1 million 2003-2005 accord, civic, and elements, but for some reason, they did not include the pilots. this seems like too much of a coincidence and i see many other pilot owners complaining about the same issue. i would like honda to cover the same year pilots.

On my 2004 honda pilot, the srs (airbag) warning indicator light on the dashboard mysteriously remains on even though there have been no other changes to the vehicle. the honda dealer wants $80 just to look at it! this is outrageous; it's clearly a failed component that should be covered under the safety portion of the vehicle's warrantee for the lifetime of the vehicle. there are many other honda owners who have experienced this warning light and they report it is nearly always a failed passenger seat sensor that honda is replacing under a tsb; however my local dealer claims to know nothing of the tsb and want me to pay for this.

Defective shift interlock allowed the ignition key to be removed while vehicle was parked and left in gear. the unoccupied vehicle rolled approximately twenty feet, coming to rest after contacting a parked vehicle (vehicle #2). owner of vehicle #2 was loading bags into her trunk and was warned by a bystander to get out of the way- which prevented her from being hit by the rolling vehicle. no injuries were reported, and damage to the vehicles was negligible. police were called and they responded. information was exchanged between the vehicle operators. it should be noted that this defect was the subject of a recall for other honda vehicles (accord, civic, others) in late 2010.

Tl-the contact owns a 2004 honda pilot. the contact stated while the engine was turned off and the gear selector was in the drive position, the ignition key released from the ignition switch unexpectedly when engaged. suddenly, the vehicle rolled and crashed into an unoccupied parked vehicle. there was no personal injury. the vehicle was able to be driven from the scene. a police report was not filed; and both vehicles sustained minor damages with total repairs estimating $2,000. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they informed that the failure was related to a defect within the the ignition switch. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact stated there was a similar defect on a recall pertaining to the 2002 and 2003 model years under nhtsa campaign id number 10v364000 (electrical system:ignition). the failure mileage was approximately 90,000. js

I have a 2004 honda pilot and i am having the same problem that a lot of the honda cars are getting recalled for but my vehicle is not listed. you can remove the key while the gear selector is not in park. my wife rolled foward and hit a safety pole. she is always afraid of doing it again with our kids in the car. i called honda about the repair and they said it was not a recall. i dont understand how some honda cars can get recalled but mine will not. i called honda and asked about the cost of the repair and they told me it was going to be expensive.

Dear sir/madam, my 2004 honda pilot has 58k miles on it. i scheduled a 60k major maintenance on 3/19/2010. but on 3/18/2010 on my way back home, the check engine light was on, the car got vibration and smoke. i sent my car to the dealer immediately at about 7:00 pm on 3/18/2010. on 3/19/2010, the dealer called me and said the no. 5 spark plug came out and burned out the coil, it's a very unusual situation. i went to the dealer to check the damages: the spark plug only has the metal portion left, the coil burned out and only 1/3 or 1/2 left, the cylinder head got some damage too and some metal chips remained in the cylinder head and cylinder. i did the oil changes and maintenance at dealership regularly and drove the car gently. i don't think this incident is related to my driving style. it has to be quality issue on either the coil or the spark plug. but i am not a mechanics and don't know if this happened to other cars. although the car is out of warranty (3 years/36k miles), i really think it's a serious quality issue. honda needs to take care of this issue. i am unlucky, this happened to me, i am lucky, it happened to me not on highway. hope the authority can do some investigation and urge honda to resolve this issue. thanks.

Honda pilot engine light keeps coming on. since purchase date of 10-12-04 it has been in the honda service dept 3 times. engine light keeps coming on and cylinders are misfiring causing the pilot to lose power while driving. after stopping and turning off the engine for awhile it will start up again and usually the engine light will not come on again. this has happened 3 times since it was in the honda service dept. *jb
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - BATTERY - CABLES

I purchased a 2004 honda pilot on october 23, 2003 and have since had the battery replaced twice along with four towing occurrences and on-going safety concern for my family especially my two toddlers each time i turn the ignition on. i have not been unsuccessful with a resolve from the manufacturer. after my fourth attempt of mail the manufacturer and dealer only offer to reimburse my $400 towing expenses. the dealer i purchased the vehicle from to date cannot give me an accurate diagnosis. academy honda claims my issues could range from re-programming keys, ignition, fuel pumps etc. i have lost days from work, pre-paid child care and tuition expenses and suffers horrifying emotional stress from these incidences. to dated not one representative from the honda dealer has called to see how vehicle is running. it is apparent that this vehicle has an on-going safety issues that requires immediate detailed scrutiny. i would like to have this matter investigated. this is my only mode of transportation for work, errands and family affairs. i fear the death of my 3 and 4 yrs old toddlers, in addition to myself and my spouse. at this point any given morning, afternoon or evening i can be stranded at any venue. any expedited attention you can place on this matter will be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance for your consideration. *jb

Stopped vehicle, turned off vehicle and removed key. later got into car and started it up found it. attempted again not in park and it was able to replicate it. took vehicle to dealer, they were able to replicate it, wanted almost $850.00 to repair and was told it was not considered a safety issue so there was no recall. they recommend the mechanical portion of the ignition switch be repaired. unable to afford the repair so still occurring. current mileage is 118,000+ miles. *tr
