In a letter dated april 9, 2012, a consumer petitioned the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) to initiate a defect investigation of alleged stability control failures in model year (my) 2005 honda pilot vehicles. the petitioner alleged that, in the malfunctioning of these systems, steering failures occur and the brakes apply involuntarily.on june 4, 2012 the office of defects investigations (odi) opened defect petition dp12-002 to evaluate whether to grant or deny the petition.the petition is hereby granted.the vehicle stability assist (vsa) system in the my 2005 honda pilot vehicles integrates braking control strategies for anti-lock braking, traction control, electronic stability control and brake assist functions.the system consists of a vsa modulator (an electronic control unit and electronic/hydraulic actuator) that receives data from an integral brake pressure sensor and from wheel speed sensors (four wheels), the steering wheel angle sensor and a combination yaw rate and lateral acceleration sensor.allegations of unexpected braking appear to be related to inappropriate activation of the brake assist (ba) function.the ba system is designed to minimize stopping distances in emergency braking maneuvers by rapidly applying maximum braking force when a panic stop is detected.odi's analysis of complaints and information provided by honda in its response to the dp12-002 information request letter have identified fault conditions that may result in false detection of a panic stop by the ba system, resulting in unexpected, severe brake application.odi's analysis of consumer complaints has identified 185 incidents of unexpected braking of varying duration, including several allegations of rapid decelerations from highway speeds to near stops in highway travel lanes (voqs 10450564, 10467571, 10427031, 10257672, 10453607). honda implemented countermeasures in the control and fault detection algorithm in the my 2006 pilot vsa modulators, which are not interchangeable with the my 2005 parts. allegations of steering anomalies appear to be related to inappropriate activation of the vsa stability assist function.the vsa system uses information from the wheel speed, steering wheel angle, yaw rate and lateral acceleration sensors to calculate the rate of change in vehicle side slip with respect to time.if excessive side slip is calculated, the system modulates brake force pulses to individual or combinations of wheels to maintain stability.honda identified a problem with faulty yaw rate sensors sending an incorrect yaw rate signal to the vsa modulator.this may result in inappropriate vsa system activation, which is perceived by the driver as a momentary steering pull.the vsa control logic is designed to detect the yaw rate sensor faults in less than one second and place the system in failsafe mode, disabling all vsa functions.odi has identified a total of 20 complaints that appear to be related to inappropriate vsa activation.a preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect.the voqs associated with the opening of this investigation are:10476925, 10472803, 10472620, 10467571, 10466790, 10464695, 10462811, 10459818, 10453607, 10451781, 10450564, 10448010, 10447413, 10443505, 10429988, 10427031, 10410421, 10407070, 10399198, 10382911, 10381501, 10380979, 10368257, 10367757, 10366406, 10360371, 10359591, 10351927, 10334571, 10321302, 10307606, 10282189, 10279468, 10270110, 10260943, 10257728, 10257672, 10248833, 10247329, 10213049, 10194731, 10178891, 10160741, 10158094.

In march of 2007, my wife was traveling at approximately 55 miles per hour when our 2005 honda pilot started braking on its own as if the abs system had been activated. we did not think much of it until the summer of 2012 when the vehicle did it again about 5 times in a week. we took the vehicle to the honda dealership in staten island when they told us that we needed four new tires, and to replace the catalytic converter. with that diagnostic i told them that they had no idea what they were talking about since a catalytic converter has nothing to do with the braking system. since we could not afford to buy a new vehicle, we had the abs system disabled, and the problem has not resurfaced. the only bad part is that we are driving the vehicle on the traditional braking system with no abs capability. can you please provide any updates on your investigation on the subject matter?  First incident, my wife was driving approximately 45 mph when 2005 honda pilot began to vibrate and make a groaning noise or a noise almost like when you drive on a gravel road. 2005 honda pilot was also (while vibrating and making noise) abruptly slowing down/ stopping without depressing the brake pedal. it would also do this while applying the accelerator. second incident was later that same day. i picked the 2005 honda pilot up from my wife as she was now to afraid to drive it. after about 10 mins of driving, i was doing about 55 mph and the 2005 honda pilot made the same noise and vibration as described above and also slowed down abruptly as if i hit the brakes(which i didn't). about another half mile was a traffic light as i began to slow down for light i applied the brakes gently and as i applied the brakes the brake pedal left my foot and the 2005 honda pilot came to an abrupt stop. this happened two more times so i pulled into a parking lot because i did not feel safe driving at that point. when i stopped in the parking lot i noticed my vsa indicator light was on. it would not turn off until i turned the 2005 honda pilot off. same day i took my 2005 honda pilot to the local honda dealership and they have not been able to reproduce the symptom.

Accelerating at relatively low speed, usually just after stopping, heard audible pop through car radio, abs and emergency brake lights came on. car braked rapidly, even though foot was on accelerator and not touching the brake pedal. forced car to almost a complete stop. this same sequence of events happened three times within 30 minutes. pulled car into parking lot and called honda service dept. they had never heard of this happening and car was towed in to run diagnostics. service dept drove car around for over three days and was unable to duplicate issue. they had some ideas to cause, but since they couldn't get it to repeat, could not fix anything. *tr

Driving along and my vsa light comes on, the brakes grab and the vehicle swerves as if i have suddenly slammed on brakes. my foot is on accelerator at the time not the brakes. live on an icy, winding road with lots of semi truck traffic. very scary. happening every single time i drive now. once the vsa light comes on and the brakes lock momentarily the vsa light and warning light stays on till vehicle turned off. first time the vsa light came on there was no locking of brakes. just the light. now the brakes lock up momentarily every time i drive. extremely concerned for my safety. *tr

Yesterday was the most recent occurance of a problem that has been ongoing (but random, not constant) since september. we purchased the car in july. the pilot has been slamming on the brakes randomly by itself. it has happened while i gently applied brakes and also while i've been accelerating. the first couple times it happened there were no lights on my dash but then the vsa light came on. it went off again after turning the car off and back on. i had my brakes, pads, and rotors changed and the brake lines flushed. since then no lights have been on. then yesterday, very suddenly, the car began slamming on the brakes. it happened while i was turning into a shopping center and if there had been a car behind me i'm sure i would have caused and accident because the sudden braking was so severe. i coasted for a bit, tried to reapply the brakes gently and the car broke again throwing me forward. in total, it stopped short about 5/6 times before i was able to get to a parking spot. it happened while both braking and also trying to accelerate. when the brakes are applied by the car, it is accompanied by a loud rumbling sound and sensation. something similar to going high speed over a rumble strip for a long time. no lights are on my dash now and i was able to drive the car home without incident. driving my car is like playing russian roulette. most of the time it drives great and i love it, and then out of the blue the car brakes at inappropriate times and intensity. it feels like driving with an instructor who suddenly slams on the brakes regardless of what you may be doing. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. the contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the brakes engaged independently as the abs and vehicle stability warning lights illuminated. the vehicle spun in full circle three times before stopping. the contact had to disconnect and reconnect the battery in order to release the brakes. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that every code for the brake system showed up when performing a diagnostic test. the dealer could not determine what caused the failure, but suggested they replaced the vehicle stability and abs modules. the dealer could not guarantee that the repair would remedy the failure. the failure and the current mileages were 170,000.

While driving a short distance away from my home the car's brakes locked up on their own. the next 1/4 mile while trying to reach a safe place to pull over the brakes would lock and unlock without warning. once pulled over and noticed the vsa light was illuminated. after then reading the owners manual i followed the instructions to turn the vehicle off and then back on. at this point the vsa light was off and i was able to drive back home without another incident. very concerned to drive vehicle again since if this were to happen on the highway or major road an accident would be likely. i have two children 2 and 4 years of age and this is the vehicle we use to get them around. thank you for your time and review of this issue. *tr

I was driving under slightly wet conditions at a fairly low speed (approx. 25 - 30 mph) and the car seemed, momentarily, as if the left front tire had gone flat and an indicator light with a triangle and an exclamation point and the vsa light simultaneously came on. i pulled over, checked the tire, turned the car off, restarted it and everything was fine for the rest of that day. the next morning, i experienced the same thing after the car had sat all night. after turning it off and back on, the indicator and vsa lights were out, but then came back on less than 30 minutes later while idling. the weather conditions this day were cold, but dry. i made an appointment and took the car to leith honda. i experienced the same condition while driving it to the dealer. the service advisor told me that there was no indication of a problem and the car's computer didn't indicate that the vsa had even been on. i picked the car up that night, after they had closed, and experienced the problem less than 15 minutes after i left the dealer. i then experienced it again the next day, after a cold start, and then again today, also after a cold start, but this time while idling. this is a scary and potentially dangerous situation and there are lots of reports about this problem floating around the internet. my particular experiences haven't been as bad (yet) as others have described, but the symptoms are the same (front brakes momentarily locking and steering pulling, in my case, to the left). *tr

While driving at low speeds (20-50 mph) the car makes a low grinding noise and rapidly brakes/decelerates without the brakes being touched. this has been happening on and off for years; however, recently it has been happening on a daily basis. the driver (myself) and the passengers (usually my two children) in the car lurch forward as the car unexpectedly brakes. the brake lights do not come on when this happens. this is a major safety concern for my family and i. this is our family car and i am very afraid to drive my children anywhere in this car with the frequency of these incidents. in fact, on december 8, 2012 another car almost slammed into the back of us. i have done some research and have found that other 2005 honda pilot owners have had the same exact problem. *tr

I had been driving the car for nearly an hour. i came toward a stoplight, put the brakes on, which seemed to function fine. then when i went to accelerate the car jarred to a shaky stop- almost like the anti-lock brakes were working. i took it home, stopped the care for a few minutes and then decided to take it back out to see if it would happen again. i drove it for about 5 minutes and came to a stop sign. i came to a complete stop and then when i went to turn i accelerated briefly and then the car came to a stop- like someone had stepped on the brakes but i did not step on them. the car never stopped running or never stalled, i just had no acceleration for a moment. i then drove the car immediately to my mechanic down the street from my house. one of the mechanics drove the car with me in it for several minutes and could not get the problem to happen. he dropped me off at my house and when he was accelerating out of my driveway i saw the car come to a complete stop but no brake lights went on at the back of the car. he was able to back into my driveway- the car never shut off and still functioned- and he asked me if that was the issue and i said yes. since then we have had it a transmission place where the mechanic was not sure what was wrong and we then had it towed to the nearest honda dealership where we actually purchased the car. they have never heard of this issue either and currently cannot get it to happen to them. and now i have no car and will not drive this car until i know it has been fixed.

Beginning 12/06 the car would slam it's brakes on, independently, when making a left turn. it happened a couple times and the dealer could find nothing. after having it happen yet again, and after detailing how this problem nearly took my life, honda agreed to take the car and the service rep. would drive it. i was fortunate and it happened to him very quickly. under warranty, 1/25/07, a abs/tcs/vsa modulator was replaced. now five years later the car has decided that if it can't independently slam it's breaks on, well, it will just independently speed up instead. again, when making left hand turns. guess what, now we are out of warranty and honda is out of caring. i would be very curious to know how many people honda has hurt or killed, just no one figured out why in the world the driver sped up or suddenly slammed on the brakes. *tr

We recently purchased this car used from anderson honda of palo alto. on several occasions the vsa has engaged for no apparent reason at speeds ranging from 10-35 mph. the vsa engaged at slow speeds when turning and at the faster speeds on the straight-a-way. when the vsa engages the vsa light and warning light turn on. the lights do go off after the car has been turned off and at rest for a few minutes. most often when the vsa engages the car shudders slightly, both the brake and the gas pedal shudder and vibrate. the car feels like it is slowing momentarily. in the most recent episode on nov. 27. the car was traveling 35 mph down hill and the steering pulled slightly to the left. *tr

Driving along a two lane highway on a 20 degree morning and coasting around a gently curving corner to the right at 45 mph when an unexpected jarring and pulling to the left occurred coupled with a loss of speed and the vsa letters and a triangle indicator lights lit on the dash board.. needless to say this got my attention and luckily nothing was coming from the other direction. i had not touched the brake pedal until after the initial problem occurred and when i saw the lights and went along maybe 200 to 300 yds it did it again which got me very worried. i pulled over and turned the engine off and tried to reset the car but to no joy so i drove the remainder of my commute to work with the very same lights left on. the remainder of my drive was fine but not sure if i am safe driving with this anomaly and especially the sudden self braking, when will it happen next? *tr

My wife and i have had multiple incidences with our vsa system in our 2005 pilot over the last several months. while driving anywhere from 5-40mph, the car has locked the brakes and steering. it seems to happen randomly with no prior indications. i did a bit of research online and found no solution to my problem. i saw that the nhtsa was looking into the issue as of october, and i am hoping to find a solution soon. this is a serious issue that has the potential to cause a fatal accident if it happens at the wrong time. *tr

I saw on the news that the nhtsa was investigating a brake issue on the honda pilot 2005. i experienced a similar issue but thought it was a glitch as it only happened one day (although it happened twice that day). i've finally gotten around to filing an official report both with honda and nhtsa to hopefully aid in the investigation. the braking issue happened on two separate occasions on the same day, roughly 2 months ago. the first incident happened on the freeway. i was going the speed limit when all of a sudden i felt like the car completely lost power. the lights on the dashboard flashed, my speed decreased suddenly although i still had my foot on the gas. it only last a few seconds and then i regained control of the vehicle. an hour later, when i was off the freeway, it happened again, but this time i was going 25 miles an hour driving on city streets. same exact issue where it felt like the car computer shut down with no power for a few seconds. it hasn't happened since, but i'm very scared that it may happen at any time again. we only have one car and have a 1 year old. i hope honda and the nhtsa make progress into identifying the issue. please let me know if i can contribute any more information.  I was on the highway doing about 60. i put on my blinker and was about to change to the left lane next to me. a car in the left lane sped up as i started to move left. i turned back slightly to the right and tapped my brakes. the brakes locked up and i had a hard time controlling the vehicle. luckily there were no cars next to me or behind me, because i went into the right lane next to me and then onto the birm lane. the car stopped suddenly. the road was dry- there was no reason for this to happen. thank god my children were not with me and that the only cars on the highway were ahead of me. *tr

Starting about a month ago, when our honda pilot 2005 reached a little over 100k miles, the antilock braking system started freaking out. when going approximately 35-45 mph on straight dry roads the brakes will suddenly apply themselves with no pressing of the brake pedal! luckily it has lasted only a second and they are suddenly released, but it is very frightening and if i were not looking straight ahead and holding tight to the wheel the car easily could have pulled off the road (it seems to be predominantly the front driver side brake - i think the left side only did it once.) this has happened 5 times on different days in the past month. it usually happens within the first couple minutes of starting the car. also, when driving at slow speeds 5-15mph while turning we have started to hear a clunking/scrapping sound of the antilock brakes adjusting - is how i'd describe it? the brake pedal is not being pressed, but they seem to be confused. the sound is similar to how it would sound if we actually hit an ice patch while driving and applied the brakes - kind of a clunking or bracing sound to prevent skidding, but the road is dry. and finally just yesterday the brakes seem to have become permanently stuck in the slightest/teeniest level of application - they just sound like they are applied while driving. the car kind of humms. this didn't stop until i stopped the car completely and turned it off, waited 5 minutes and started again? this time the roads were very wet and possibly it started when we hit a slightly slick spot? but then didn't let up till the car was turned off? the brakes have a sensation like they will suddenly go off without warning or maybe even not apply if i need them to?! we drive a 7,6 and 4 year old in this car every day. please require honda to recall and fix this asap! thank you. *tr

While driving on a trip on the nys thruway, the driver's front brake would intermittently lock up and drag the car to the left. we would hear a noise (abs pump?) and lights would intermittently come on the dash. this would last only a few seconds at a time, but enough to yank the wheel and pull into the left lane. we did make it home. the dealer diagnosed as a defective yaw/stability control sensor. they refused to process under warranty even though the warranty had barely expired. cost $820 to fix. i am writing now because i recently saw an article in the newspaper where your agency identified this very problem with 2005 honda pilots. *tr

Starting about a month ago, when our honda pilot 2005 reached a little over 100k miles, the antilock braking system started freaking out. when going approximately 35-45 mph on straight dry roads the brakes will suddenly apply themselves with no pressing of the brake pedal! luckily it has lasted only a second and they are suddenly released, but it is very frightening and if i were not looking straight ahead and holding tight to the wheel the car easily could have pulled off the road (it seems to be predominantly the front driver side brake - i think the left side only did it once.) this has happened 5 times on different days in the past month. it usually happens within the first couple minutes of starting the car. also, when driving at slow speeds 5-15mph while turning we have started to hear a clunking/scrapping sound of the antilock brakes adjusting - is how i'd describe it? the brake pedal is not being pressed, but they seem to be confused. the sound is similar to how it would sound if we actually hit an ice patch while driving and applied the brakes - kind of a clunking or bracing sound to prevent skidding, but the road is dry. and finally just yesterday the brakes seem to have become permanently stuck in the slightest/teeniest level of application - they just sound like they are applied while driving. the car kind of humms. this didn't stop until i stopped the car completely and turned it off, waited 5 minutes and started again? this time the roads were very wet and possibly it started when we hit a slightly slick spot? but then didn't let up till the car was turned off? the brakes have a sensation like they will suddenly go off without warning or maybe even not apply if i need them to?! we drive a 7,6 and 4 year year old in this car every day. please require honda to recall and fix this asap! thank you.

While driving on the highway at approximately 60 mph the brakes suddenly activated and the vehicle rapidly decelerated. tires actually screeched due to the rapid deceleration. the brakes pulsed off and on until the vehicle came to a complete stop. pressing and releasing the brake pedal had no effect. i turned off the car then re-started it and continued on with no further problem. if a car would have been behind me it certainly would have caused an accident as my vehicle stopped so abruptly i surely would have been rear-ended. i have owned this vehicle for 5 yrs and this has happened 5-6 times, the first time about 6 mos after i purchased the vehicle. the date here is the most recent incident. it has occurred at different speeds and happens when the brake pedal has not been touched. it is random and i have gone as long as a year between incidents. i have not yet taken it to a dealer because it is such a random occurrence and not possible to duplicate, and numerous accounts of this problem on-line indicate that honda does not have a fix and does not acknowledge the problem. my experience is exactly as described in nhtsa action number dp12002 and pe12028. *tr

Vehicle being driven on highway at approximate 50mph and brakes randomly apply without pedal being depressed. vehicle comes to dangerous and violent stop. same thing happens when vehicle is driven at lower speeds between 25mph to 35mph. violent braking happens both when pedal is applied and also randomly without pedal being depressed. vehicle is not safe and honda claims it has no real solution. honda dealership/service center has duplicated exact malfunction and requires honda to assist them with finding a solution. now being held hostage by honda on how or if they can repair issue, which leaves vehicle safety in question. *tr

I was driving the 2005 honda pilot about 20 to 30 mph . the time was about 7:15 am. the roads were wet after some misting light rain. i heard a relatively loud noise that startled me. the noise lasted for perhaps 2 seconds. it sounded as if the brakes were inadvertently being applied and grabbing or perhaps something was wrong with the transmission or rear end. i do not remember that the brakes were being applied at the time, but it is possible that they were. i kept driving and was then much more attentive to there possibly being something wrong with the car. about one minute later i heard an almost identical loud sound. i do remember that i was braking at the time, but due to being startle, it is possible that i may not remember such. the vehicle may have decelerated, but to the best of my recollection, i do not believe that the vehicle deceleration was severe. i drove the vehicle to the local honda dealer. i was told that the mechanic test drove the vehicle and could not repeat the problem and that he could not find anything wrong with the vehicle. then the service manager talked to me about what possible might have caused the loud noise and he test drove the vehicle with me inside. he directed the vehicle with the left wheels on the pavement and the right wheels on the grass. then he rapidly applied the brakes. the vehicle made a loud noise and to my memory the noise sounded like the noises i had encountered previously. he said that this noise was from the abs system engaging. i was very please with the attention of the service manager and his customer interaction. note: the printed paper shop invoice recorded : customer states it feels like brakes are sticking. problem is intermittent. my above incident description provides a more complete description of the incidents. *tr

Driving at around 45-50 mph on a busy highway in the morning rush hour, as i pressed my brake suddenly to avoid another vehicle coming on to my lane, i lost control of the car. it swung violently from side-to-side as i tried to steer it away from vehicles around me so as not to hit them. it finally came to a halt after slamming on to the vehicle that came on to my lane causing me to brake suddenly in the first place. the person whose car i hit and who watched me from a close range told me later that he was worried that the car was going to turn over. for me, the scary part was when i could not control the car by steering it. i swerved it left & right so as not to hit others but felt as if something else was controlling the sideways movement of the car. i suspected it was some kind of computer malfunction and thought about reporting it to honda but did not get a chance to do that. i am reporting it now as i read yesterday on usa today that you are investigating a similar-sounding problem that another consumer reported. *tr

While driving the braking system suddenly started to activate the anti-lock braking system, violently applying the brakes regardless of how hard or softly i touched the brake pedal. this anomaly has occurred multiple times without warning and for no apparent reason. i could not address this problem because it was unpredictable and went away when i would get the car to a safe place and turn off the key. it would no longer be happening, similar to rebooting a computer. no dash symptom lights would appear during these incidents. please advise if i have any recourse with honda since the vehicle is out of warranty. reference nhtsa action number pe12028. *tr

Stopping irregularity at highway speeds. very unsafe feeling from a drivers perspective! non-solid feeling brake peddle plus a tendancy to not stop in a straight line. front brake pads or caliper system have made a very detectable (from inside the pilot with the windows up) snap / clack noise when engaging brakes during faster than normal stops from highway speeds, more than on one occasion - (replacing the brake pads with new ones seems to help / keep them new / thick).. *tr

This problem began earlier in 2012 and was investigated by the dealer in june. while driving at various speeds (45-75mph), the vsa system engages, locking one wheel for a second or two, and pulling the steering wheel as if in a skid. when this stops, the vsa light is on as well as a yellow triangle with an exclamation point. when the dealer 'fixed' this in june, they repaired a tpms sensor. they also found a brake caliper stuck and fixed that as well as replaced the brake pads. since june the issue has not occurred until yesterday. it has happened at 3 times in the past 2 days, all at @ 45 mph. this seems to be a widely reported issue and is certainly a safety concern. when this happened in june on the interstate, traffic on both sides of me dropped back because they could tell i lost control of the car. *tr

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. the contact stated that while driving 55 mph the brakes engaged independently without any warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the fourth year pressure switch was faulty and needed to be replaced. the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. the failure mileage was 79,450 and the current mileage was 88,450. pmb

While i was driving approx 40 mph my 2005 honda pilot's brakes engaged on their own. the brakes stuck to the floor and the car jetted to the left into the median while stopping. during the event there was a loud groaning noise that was coming from the front end of the vehicle. i made my way into a gas station and turned off the vehicle. i restarted the car and proceeded home when it happened again 1/2 mile later at 30 mph, brakes to the floor, loud groaning sound. at this point i was terrified as my 3yr daughter was in the car and we were in the middle of rush hour. the vsa light popped on after the second event.car was immediately taken to the shop where we were told by the technician who inspected and drove the vehicle that he was able to replicate the event 2x. they stated we had a problem w/the vsa or abs system and we had to take it to the honda dealer. the technician also noted that when they hooked the car up to the computer there was a time when the abs system was reading no data.the car was taken to honda the next day and we were told we did not have a problem w/our abs or vsa system. they were also unable to replicate the problem. honda concluded that my brake pads/rotors & tires needed replaced. the original shop we took it to stated our brakes and tires were fine and would not contribute to the problem we were having. we trustedhonda and completed the repairs they requested outside of the dealership. new brakes & tires on the vehicle and we have had 4 add.'l incidents since these ?repairs? have been made. all of the info we received from the first shop that inspected the vehicle was relayed to honda numerous times and they were adamant that we did not have a vsa or abs problem. clearly they were wrong. we are taking it back to the dealer next tuesday .the vehicle remains unsafe to drive and we are very displeased at how honda is handling the situation.

The first incident occurred while traveling at highway speeds. the car violently jerked forward 3 times and came to a complete sudden stop on the interstate. luckily no one was following too close or we would have been rear ended. my foot was on the accelerator maintaining a steady speed, and it was like i stomped on the break rapidly three times and then the car came to a complete stop. we took the car to the honda dealership and they could not repeat the issue but said that the battery wasn't putting out the proper amount of amps and was likely resulting in the computer sending faulty messages. they replaced the battery. the car seemed to be fixed when the battery was replaced, but then the issue recurred about two months later at the end of february 2012. while accelerating at about 30 mph, the car violently came to a sudden stop in the middle of the road. again, we were lucky to not be not rear ended. we took the car to another auto shop, but they weren't able to duplicate the issue. they assessed the computer and noted a faulty egr valve and replaced it. the car drove fine for two weeks after that, then the issue recurred for a third time, again at about 30 mph. the same thing ocurred; the car came to a sudden stop in the middle of the road after the sensation of stomping on the breaks several times. the car is in the shop again, and they can't recreate the problem. their assessment is leading them to believe there is a faulty abs switch or brake booster. after several failed repair attempts, we aren't confident that anyone knows what the problem is. however, if you read the forums online, this is a problem that has been reported by dozens of people with my year, make/model and at the approximate mileage as my car. if we continue driving the car, we are scared we may injure ourselves or others.

It was night, and my girlfriend and i just exited the freeway, we just turned onto a side street and made it 100 yards when all of the sudden it felt like my left front tire went flat or i hit something and it dragged, i immediatly pulled over to inspect, and found nothing. i did noptice the vsa and vsa activation indicators on, turning the car off and then on agian reset the indicators. oddely concerned we circled back to check for anything in the road, there was nothing. it happened agian just a few minutes later, and the indicators came back on. it repeated itself a thrid time, and i drove home very worried it would happen on the freeway. each instance was momentary and it pulled hard left each time with a load antilock brake type jarring vibration. from reading other stories i can see that this problem isnt one of a kind, and i havn't seen anyone post a fix for it.

Vehicle engaged anti-lock brakes randomly as coming to stop. vsa light would come on and then disappear when the vehicle would start. acceleration affected at highway speeds of 50-60 mph and on side roads at 20-40 mph. no indicator light when car was restarted as to issue with car. car would lurch randomly both braking and accelerating. first dealer towed (willet honda, morrow, ga) did not find issue and sent driver on way. car lurched randomly less than one mile drive out of the dealer service lot. second dealer service station (ed voyles honda, marietta, ga) contacted american honda for issue. identified as electrical system failure causing full brake failure including antilock brakes and vsa system. total cost of repairs $1565.16. no indicator at all to indicate failures. willet dealership should not have released vehicle to owner with safety issue.

The brakes in my 2005 honda pilot suddenly apply themselves. over the past 4 years, this has happened to me 3 times when i tapped the brake pedal and once just driving down the road. my wife recently had it happen once to her just after taking off from a stop sign. it happened to me while driving down the road at between 40 and 50 miles per hour. i've seen this problem reported on other web sites...one was going 60 when it happened. two honda dealers did diagnostics and found nothing. they could not reproduce the problem...no surprise since it's random! the last time (incident date below) my wife was out of town had the car towed to the the second dealer. (the brake pads were replace by them but we've put less than 150 miles on it since then.) i believe this is not related to the mechanics since it happens suddenly and unexpectedly under different conditions...but who knows.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 honda pilot. while driving 40 mph, the vehicle slammed into brake mode and came to a complete and sudden stop. the failure continued for several minutes, causing items to be thrown from the seat onto the floor. during the failure, the vehicle stability assist warning indicator was illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing, which produced a low battery voltage code and a brake sensor code. the dealer tested and replaced the battery. they also notified the manufacturer and opened a case. the failure and current mileages were less than 58,000.

Happened to me 3 times yesterday. once while driving ~40mph the vehicle came to a sudden stop, throwing items from the seat into the floor. the first instance was brief and i drove ~2 miles before it happened again with the vsa indicator lights (caution and off) came. manual states vsa can reset by turning car off and back on (must be a microsoft system). drove the car to work. later left work and went about 5 miles before the violent sudden stop event. folks this is serious people could have been killed due to the violent nature of the car stopping. car is at the dealer right now, they could not repeat the event , yet and claimed the computer could not read any codes. they have a call into the factory. reference thread at www.hondapilot.org honda pilot .org > general > problems > vsa applies full brake for no reason. *tr

*tr

Brakes lock up while drving down the road. dealership says they don't know what is wrong with it. this has happened three times now. the car has been to the dealer twice. keeps happening. nearly rearended this last time. research on the internet shows that i am not alone. yet honda dealership claims they have never heard of this, they called headquarters and no one has heard of this. they want us to come and get it. i am afraid to drive it. it isn't safe to have your car locks its breaks out of no where. no warning at all. another person on the internet reports it happened on the freeway!!! car swerved all over, cars honked swerved to miss them. they have a claim number with honda as well. this is not safe and the honda dealership is acting like i should just forget about it and drive this car. *nm

I was driving my 2005 honda pilot form my home and made a left turn out of my subdivision. suddenly the vehicle made a loud grinding noise that seemed to come from the front of it. it went away and i continued driving slowly (about 15 - 20 mph) to see if i could detect something further wrong or if i had run over something. as i found no indication of the cause of the noise i continued on. within approximately one city block the vehicle seemed to apply the brakes and slowed itself to a crawl. i did not apply the brakes! the noise again occurred while this happened. the noise, i realized, was similar to anti-lock brakes activating during a hard stop. this occurred three more times in rapid succession and then went away. i continued on trying to figure out what was wrong and applied the brakes myself. they seemed to work ok. as i proceeded , the brakes once again applied themselves (with absolutely no action from me) another four times. at this time the vsa light came on the dash. i attempted to turn it off, but was not sure if it did turn off or not. i drove another two to three miles without further problems. on may 10, approximately three weeks after the first incident, the vsa light came on. i pulled over, shut off the car and restarted it as directed in the owner's manual and the vsa light did not come back on. later that day, while driving with four people in the pilot i had made a left turn and had accelerated to about 40 mph when the brakes again applied themselves, the pilot dived to the left and came to a complete stop. again, i did not apply the brakes, the pilot did this itself. the vsa light had come on again and i followed the procedure in the owner's manual. this seemed to work once again. as everyone in the pilot had their seat belts on, no one was injured. *jb
