My wife purchased a 2000 hyundai elantra vin#[xxx] from brown hyundai of toledo oh. on 4/18/05 she brought the car to brown hyundai at 63,000 miles due to a notice about possible for cracks forming in the exhaust manifold, specifically tsb 05-01-001. no replacement was made at that time. recently, i noticed an existing crack in the exhaust manifold and performed some research on the internet about the problem. i am sure you are aware how common of a problem this has been as there are numerous complaints on various automotive forums, the nhtsa, and various states' department of consumer protection. i had the vehicle recently (10/08/12) inspected at voss hyundai of centerville oh who has confirmed the existing crack. at 125,000 miles the car is passed its powertrain warranty. simply because it was not visibly evident in 2005 does not mean the manifold was up to hyundai's quality standards. exhaust manifolds are cast iron or steel and are not a moving part subject to friction. therefore, i cannot accept that this current problem is the result of standard or expected wear-and-tear but caused by a pre-existing defect that has surfaced over time. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 hyundai elantra. the contact's vehicle was repaired according to nhtsa campaign id number 00v259001 (electrical system:wiring). the contact was unaware of the repair. several months after the repair was made, the vehicle lost power while driving various speeds and caused him to decelerate. the vehicle also lost power steering ability, and eventually the vehicle would stall. the contact has to place the vehicle into neutral and then restart it in order for it to be functional. he took the vehicle to the dealer on numerous occasions, but the failure could not be duplicated. over the past several years, the dealer repeatedly replaced the crankshaft position sensors and power relay. secondly, because the vehicle was previously repaired according to the recall, the dealer would not assume financial responsibility for the repair. the contact called the manufacturer and is waiting for their response. as of july 18, 2008, the contact has not received any assistance. the failure mileage was 10,000 and current mileage was 108,000.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 15 mph, the engine hesitated, then stalled. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop who determined that the problem was with the mass air flow sensor which would need to be replaced. however, the replacement parts needed to be ordered. the manufacturer was contacted who determined there was a recall # 00v259001 regarding electrical system:wiring but the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin.

This vehicle was purchased as a used vehicle in april 2004. it only had 38,000 miles on it. i replaced all the belts, tires and fluids in the vehicle. in august 2004, the car overheated. i called atlantic hyundai in east islip and they told me to have the car towed there. three days later they informed me that the heat of the engine had actually melted the radiator. they also told me that it had blown a head gasket. the car was still under warranty but they didn't want to honor the warranty. after much arguing with them and the warranty dept., they finally agreed to do the repairs. much to my disappointment, the problem was not fixed. the car continually overheated. i took it to another mechanic who said the thermostat had not been replaced and it looks like they never replaced the head gasket. i then paid to replace the thermostat. the car continues to overheat if driven at speeds over 30 mph. the car has been towed 4 times in the last year due to overheating. the car cannot be driven more than 30 miles because it will overheat. the car has been serviced 7 times for overheating issues. the latest issue is that the engine coolant does not circulate and causes the car to overheat. my 19 year old daughter, for whom the car was purchased, was recently traveling on the sunrise highway, less than 4 miles driven, when the car overheated again. the car currently has 46,000 miles. *jb

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - COOLING SYSTEM
10/08/20040103/13/2001
I bought a brand new 2004 hyundai elantra from fuccilo's in schenectady, ny in march of 2001. i have maintained the car. on friday oct 08, 2004 i was driving on the northway and after 20 minutes of driving the car started overheating and i pulled off the road immediately. no warning lights came on and the car's speed dropped dramatic to 0. it was towed to my mechanic and he looked at everything and said that the cooling fan was melted and the wire harness on top valve cover was totally melted and that the belts looked fine. he said it was something internal in the engine and i had to have it towed to fuccillo's because the engine is gone and it would be a warranty issue. after having it towed to fuccillo's my husband and i went there to see what was going to be done. the mechanic opened the hood, did not take anything apart and said it was the timing belt that broke and it was my fault so it would not be warrantied. they offered me 50.00 for the car towards a new car. i already owe 5000.00 on the vehicle, i only had it for 3 threes. i called my mechanic who had taken it apart and confirmed with him that the timing belt was fine. i called fuccillo's back and the mechanic said he would look at it but it would cost me 80.00. i agreed because i had no choice. i then received a phone call days later telling me that the belt jumped and damaged the engine so it would not be covered he also stated that another code (p0118) came up but he didn't know what that meant. he told me that they would not do anything else that i had a choice of trading it or paying 6000.00 for a new engine. *ak

Car continues to overheat. this is the fourth time it has happened; sometime the problem can not be duplicated and i am sent on my way even though it has happen before. the cylinder heads, water pump, thermostat, sensor and many others are only a few of the things that have been replaced on this problem. the car shuts-off without warning, and drives like a desiel engine (rough), you almost have to floor it to make the car stop and the dealer says it is normal; even though i hit another car going about 5mph because the car jerked foward and smashed my hood (i hit a ford:excrussion so he had no damage) and the transmission does not shift correctly. sure the dealer ship tries to fix the problem but there have been times i have been out of my car for a long as 7 to 8 weeks and many times there don't even know whats wrong. i have tried to contact rick case the dearlership owner and i never reiceve a call or email. *ak

I have had an intermittent low-speed stalling problem with my 2000 hyundai elantra for a long time. finally i recently had a technician drive the car for a week, and he was able to duplicate the condition and the dealer suggested replacing the throttle position sensor and then after giving them the ok on doing it, they installed the part, only to tell me later to do a very expensive repair (over 1,700 dollars for replacing the wiring harness). having paid for the throttle position sensor, i began driving the car again. i not only noticed no improvement at all in the performance of the car, the performance was actually worse. i tried to get the dealership service department to stand by their repair, but they wouldn't. in recalls on my computer i found that there was a stalling problem for all models of 2000 hyundai elantras identical to the one i have been having that created the risk of a crash, however my vin number was not included in the recall. the recall information on the internet states with regard to the cause of the problem: ...stalling could occur if the maf (mass air flow) sensor electrical signal is interrupted as a result of engine vibration transmitted to the maf sensor connector wiring harness. i have been told that in such cases where the same problem is a serious issue and some vin numbers were not included in the recall, that they are often then added to the vin numbers in the recall. i would appreciate your consideration of including my vin in this recall based on the foregoing. my vin is kmhjf35f6yu891722 the site i went to on the internet under service - recalls gave a campaign number of 00v259001 and listed the faulty components as: electrical system: wiring, and the potential consequence as: this condition can cause the engine to stall, increasing risk of a crash. and the corrective action as: dealers will re-route the maf sensor connector wiring harness. *nm

Beginning @ 3,000+ miles the vehicle stalled as i was slowing down on an expressway traffic jam. at that time the mass air flow sensor was replaced. this part was later recalled. at 18,000+ it stalled again (last july); a different component was repaired. in september it stalled again. i was told it was partly due to the fact i needed to use higher octane gasoline in the vehicle, but it was still repaired as a warranty item. late december it stalled again. it didn't begin repeating until january 2002. i took the car in on 1/5/02. the dealership kept the vehicle for 12 days waiting for a component having to do with the crank system. they were unable to idenfy the problem for several days, it won't register on the computer diagnostic system. they consulted the manufacturer. the regional representative came to see the car. the car was delivered to me on 1/17/02 supposedly repaired. it stalled again twice the next day 1/18/02. the vehicle is now at the dealership again. it stalls as i'm slowing down to come to a stop sign and particularly when making a turn of any sort. now i'm basically petrified to ride in the vehicle and afraid they'll never be able to accurately identify the problem. i can't use the lemon law because there weren't 3 service tickets with the same problem within the first 12,000 miles. they say they've re-checked the mass air flow sensor, but it's working properly. i don't know what to do!*ak

I thought my muffler had a hole in it so i took to a shop and they told me there was nothing wrong with my muffler. to another shop and told i have a cracked manifold. i think it's absurd that a 2000 model car could go through 2 manilfolds in 7 1/2 years. was at the dealership on 10/09/03 reporting the exhaust system was noisy. was told it was not muffler but was a cracked manifold. luckily it was repaired under warranty. that was less than 5 years ago. sounds like a big problem to me. i can understand one manifold getting cracked...but two in less than 4 1/2 years. this car is driven less than six miles round trip to work a day. it's not like i'm out tearing up the town all the time in the car. *tr
