Defect SummaryHyundai is recalling certain my 2001-2002 elantra vehicles. movement of the side impact air bag wiring harness mounted under each front seat, possibly caused by contact from materials placed under the seat, may result in an electrical resistance that would cause supplemental restraint system (srs) warning light illumination.
Consequence SummaryThis condition only relates to the driver and passenger seat mounted side impact air bags and may prevent seat mounted side impact air bag deployment during a crash where such deployment should occur. non-deployment of the srs air bags may increase the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger under certain crash conditions.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install new side impact air bag wiring harness connector clips and revised side impact air bag wiring harness attachments under the driver's and front passenger's seats. the recall is expected to begin during the fourth quarter of 2008, and will be sent out in six mailings. owners may contact hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

Defect SummaryHyundai is recalling certain my 2001 elantra vehicles. if a liquid is spilled in the area of the cupholder on the center console, it may seep through the console opening for the parking brake lever and then drip onto the air bag control module electrical connector. the spilled liquid may contaminate the air bag control module and its electrical connector to the air bag wiring harness and cause the supplemental restraint system (srs) warning light to illuminate.
Consequence SummaryThis condition may affect the driver and passenger frontal air bags and may prevent air bag deployment during a crash where such deployment should occur. non-deployment of the srs air bags may increase the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger under certain crash conditions.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a protective cover over the vehicle's air bag control module connector. the recall owner notification began on november 30, 2008, and letters will be sent out in six mailings. owners may contact hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

Spokane hyundai matter i bought my hyundai in 2001 and have over 100,000 miles on my car. i am the sole owner of the vehicle. recently (about 2 weeks ago) my dashboard airbag light went on and i called the dealer ship to inquire what i should do. i am concerned that the airbag may not deploy or may be defective. hyundai spokane (the dealership who sold me the car) said to bring the car in for them to investigate. i brought the car in the next day: december 21, 2011 and the car dealership informed me that it would cost me $90 for them to run their tests to determine what is wrong with my airbag light. they went on to say that there were a couple of recall notices on the car that they could replace. this airbag concern is a safety issue that is mandatory for the dealership (manufacture) to investigate and fixed. this safety issue is for the life of the car, so even though my warranty has expired on my engine, transmission, etc; the safety (airbags) is for the life of the car. why would i pay to have spokane hyundai investigate and fix a problem that hyundai is responsible for? if i had an accident and the airbag did not deploy or ineffective; spokane hyundai is liable and at fault. why is spokane hyundai trying to gauge the customer (again) for expenses they are responsible for fixing? could you pleases investigate. thank you kevin malee

 1. there were no noticeable events that led up to the failure. hyundai had a recall on the air bag sensor control module in october 2008 (recall id# 80141 & 80132). i had them install the new wiring harness and clips to prevent a spontaneous failure, but i had a failure none the less. 2. the front driver and passenger seatbelts failed without warning. i heard a loud bang noise and the seatbelts tightened up on both front passengers. i noticed an odor after the event and the seatbelts would not extend or retract and the air bag warning light was illuminated. i understand this safety feature was meant to deploy in the event of an accident, but i didn't hit anything. 3. i took the 2001 hyundai elantra in to hyundai to diagnose the failure. the following codes came up on the computer: b1361, b1360, and b1366. i was told i needed to replace the front seat belts and air bag control module. *tr

2001 hyundai elantra was taken to ourisman hyundai mazda of laurel, md to have them perform the hyundai recall no. 88 (nhtsa campaign 08v532000). dealer failed to install the recall repair item yet dealer claimed the recall work was completed. photos of unmodified vehicle are available. subsequently and on the same day of claimed repair, the srs (air bag) control module began to show a failure light on the vehicle dashboard. vehicle was returned to ourisman hyundai to correct the failure on 8/28/09. dealer claimed the srs control module was (now) defective and must be replaced at owners expense. the srs control module on this vehicle appeared to perform its function correctly for 8 years; no failure symptoms were evident. dealer recall work has rendered the srs control module inoperative. due to dealer action, our family is not longer protected by the safety restraint system. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 hyundai elantra. the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign id number 08v532000 (air bags:frontal:sensor/control module). the recall repair was performed by the dealer; however, the air bag warning indicator remained illuminated. the dealer stated that she could pay the full amount for the module and could possibly be reimbursed; however, there was no guarantee. she first noticed issues with the air bag in july of 2008 when the indicator was illuminated. she took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the air bag module needed to be replaced. the repair would cost $900. she was informed of the recall in september of 2008 and the manufacturer stated that recall notices would not be issued until the end of 2008. after having the recall remedy performed, the contact felt that the remedy was insufficient to completely repair the issue. she felt that the entire module should have been replaced because the cover was defective. the cover would be protecting the module. the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown. the current mileage was approximately 137,000 and failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

My air bag light comes on and off randomly while driving. i debated on whether or not to take it back because it wasn't on continuously. they always say we can't duplicate the problem. well now the air bag light is on continuously and i set up an appointment. they called me and said the computer is showing 12 different codes for the air bags and that they noticed something sticky like pop on the wires. they said they weren't going to cover it under warranty. my first issue with that is they should be sealed off completely so a little pop shouldn't fry the air bag. the only reason i bought my hyundai was because of the warranty and the assurance that i wouldn't have to worry about anything for 5 years. unfortunately that isn't the truth. after 6 months or so i realized that i had to start my car for atleast 15 seconds before i could actually put it in drive and go. but why wasn't it like that in the beginning? and after the first year i notice rust behind the passenger doors in near the wheel wells where the car is welded together. that's a real high quality car right there when you have a car that's 10 years older and it doesn't have a spot of rust, that shows quality. what does hyundai show? not much as far as i am concerned. it shows poor quality and a company that doesn't really stand behind their warranty. lets not forget the fact that the transmission in the car is horrible. it shifts into second gear so hard and sounds like a canon exploding. the light above the license plate burnt out 2 weeks after they replaced it the first time. and the fact that all the wires inside my doors were corroded after two years and had to be replaced. so, now i have a problem with the airbag module being destroyed and they said i spilled pop or something in the console and that's what caused it. after so many problems with wiring in the car they don't see that this could be legitimately a manufacturer defect in the module. *nm abl.pco

We purchased a 2001 hyundai elantra gt in sept. 01. since that time, we've had problems with the air bag sensor twice. both times it was fixed by the dealer. in our accident, a 35mph front end collision, our air bags did not deploy. we have registered a complaint with hyundai, who says it will take approx. 30 days to decide whether or not they deem an investigation necessary. the dealership will not deal with us, they say we need to go to hyundai. in the meantime, we are left with the choice of repairing our vehicle and having hyundai claim they cannot make a determination of faulty merchandise because our vehicle was fixed, or paying storage fees at the body shop and renting a car until hyundai decides. and, if hyundai decides they will not do an investigation, there isn't even an appeal process.

This vehicle is hazardous to be on the road. it has front end steering and suspension problems. it has a terrible vibration from 35 mph and up. if traveling on the highway the wheel shakes so badly that your hands go numb. i have had the vehicle in for service and repeated time over a two and a half year period, and the dealership has done nothing. i have also spoken with the manufacturers on several occasions, and have done nothing. it has gotten to the point that i had an accident, because of these problems. i now have a permanent injury that i will live with for the rest of my life, and they still do not care. i have 2 small children, and i am afraid every time i leave the house that something will happen with this vehicle, and one of my children get injured. fortunately, with my accident i was alone. in my accident my steering locked and i hit a stone embankment at about 40 mph with the front end and my air bag also did not deploy. unfortunately i am stuck driving this vehicle, when it is unsafe, and unfit to be on the road. it is a hazard to my family, and all others on the road with me. i sincerely hope something can be done to these dealerships, and manufacturers to ensure they are selling our consumers a safe and reliable vehicle. *la

There was an airbag recall on my 2001 hyundai elantra. i got the recalled repaired by arrow hyundai in milwaukee, wi. on january 5th, 2009. at the end of september, 2009 both of the side passenger airbags deployed within a week of each other. the first side air bag deployed while i was driving roughly 25mph. (week of september 18th.) the second side airbag deployed overnight while no one was even in the car. (the next week in september, deployed less than a week after the first) i had tried to schedule two different appointments with hyundai to have my airbags and seats fixed but had to reschedule because they could not tell me how long they would have my car. before i could go to the next appointment i made with arrow hyundai, my front passenger airbag also deployed. (about a week and a half after my second side airbag deployed). the front passenger airbag (the one that deploys from the dashboard) deployed while i was about to pull out from being parked. i was going roughly 3mph if that. this airbag shattered my windshield, making the car impossible to drive. i contacted hyundai usa the day after my front passenger airbag deployed and they began an investigation. it has now been over three months since the third airbag deployed and i haven't heard anything about having my car repaired. i have called hyundai usa at least every other week since this occurred and still have not received a real answer. *tr

I am the owner of a 2001 hyundai elantra. i purchased the vehicle new. less than one year ago, my air bag light came on. i took it back to the dealer and they had to replace it because it had dried up! they replaced the bag. less than a year later, but now my warranty is just up, the light is back on. i have notified the dealer, the consumer division of hyundai, the ceo of hyundai of my concerns and all they have offered to do is split the part, only, with me at 50%. i do not feel that this is a responsible solution for a company to take on a part from the manufacturer that is less than a year old. it has to be a safety issue to have faulty airbags! i have never had an accident with the vehicle, it has never been inflated...why would it dry out? i have a couple of other issues, but i don't believe they could be safety related. i contacted the ceo directly by certified mail and never got a response back from him. *jb abl.pco

Headlights burning out frequently was the first sign of problems, replaced them as the dealer said this was inherent to the 2001 elantra. in august 2006 check engine light came on. also, the air bag sensor light was on, headlight out again, took car to dealer, they called back and said that the alternator had been over charging and not only was the over charging burning out the headlights it also had taken out the cruise control module, and air bag module. car had only 42000 miles on it, and was 2 weeks from being out of the 5 year bumper to bumper warranty. well here it is 6 months later and 47000 miles and check engine light is back on, i have since purchased a diagnostic tool to read the codes. the car was running rough at idle. the codes came up as mis fire on cylinder 3, tps sensor failure and map barometer failure. i replaced the plugs and wires, engine still ran rough. took car back to dealer they replaced the tps, still running rough, they suggested that because of the faulty tps that the excessive dumping of fuel into the jets could have caused one of them to be clogged. i had them clean the jets as well as replace the plugs and wires again (they had also found that #3 wire had been arcing.) this took care of the idle problem. i took the car home and the next day driving the car would surge between 3rd and 4th gear, engine light back on. still have the map error. dealer ended up replacing the map sensor. it has been about a month since this last occourence and all i can do is cross my fingers until i trade it in. *ak abl.pco

I own a 2001 hyundai elantra. the air bag warning light came on while driving and stayed on. i took it into the dealership in dec. but they found nothing wrong with it. the problem continued for several weeks. i took the car into the dealership on jan. 6, 2004 and they claim liquid got on to the air bag sensors and computer through the emergency brake housing, so they feel they are not responsible for the $1100.00 replacement, even though the car is still under warranty. i feel it is a safety issue and poor design to not protect the sensors with a cover if they are going to install the air bag sensors next to the emergency brake, which are next to the cup holders. although there is a possibility that a drink might have gotten splashed near the emergency brake, i do not ever recall that happening, and no one else drives my car. however, i was told that hyundai corp. does not feel this is a problem (the positioning of the computer in a vulnerable place) because in korea, people don't eat or drink in their cars. then tell me why there are cup holders in their cars. i think their export models should have the air bag sensors and computer placed somewhere else, or, at the very least, in a covered box. *cb abl.pco

AIR BAGS - SIDE/WINDOW

*tr

2001 hyundai elantra gls -- one month ago (january 2007) the airbag light on the dashboard commenced slowly, dimly appearing then slowly fading out in one continuous cycle of several seconds. the condition repeats as long as the ignition is switched on. i noticed hyundai's recall of the 2001 hyundai elantra for exactly that problem and took the vehicle to the local dealership for repair. evidently, the condition is caused by one-or-more faulty airbag sensors. the result, according to the recall information, is that one or more airbags may not deploy when activated. the dealer entered my vehicle's vin, told me that my vehicle was not covered by the recall and refused to replace the sensors without charge. because of the exorbitant cost of replacement, please ask hyundai to include my vehicle in the recall and/or mail me a letter of credit that i can give to the dealer to have this condition repaired. accordingly, i must continue to drive the vehicle in this condition until i hear from you and/or hyundai, here concerned. otherwise, last june, 2006, both sun visor retaining brackets (holding the visor to the roof) cracked about a month apart, rendering the sun visors useless, in that the placement of the visor cannot be controlled. . .it simply drops and hangs when released from the retainer. my driver's side bracket broke just at the most inopportune moment, when the sun was shining directly into my eyes at a level just above the top of the steering wheel. i feel fortunate to have been on a lightly traveled road at the time, such that i pulled over onto the shoulder for a few minutes until the sun rose a bit higher in the sky. those brackets should last longer than this; likewise, the airbag sensors should last longer than this. *jb abl.pco
