The brake lights stayed on all night after car was put in park and engine was turned off, causing battery to lose all power. this could be caused by a faulty brake/stop light switch. a recall was issued for brake/stop light switch on different years and models of hyundai vehicles. my 2001 hyundai elantra gls was not included in the recall but probably should have been. *tr

I have had some electrical problems from the day i purchased the car. tried to resolve these with hyundai but they said unless they were currnetly happening when the car was brought in there was nothing they could do about it. the mirror will sometimes move on its own and sometimes the electrical in the car will all go on without the car being on. the malfunciton light lights up here and there also. also i have a problem with my front end suspention being very shakey and my brakes shake when stopping at higher speeds. i have only had the car a year. one more problem that it has is a major bolt in the front suspention went bad a month after i bought the car and so the dealer fixed that but they said it came off the assembly line that way. the electrical problems started a month after purchase. i bought the car new. i hate my car.*ak

Headlights burning out frequently was the first sign of problems, replaced them as the dealer said this was inherent to the 2001 elantra. in august 2006 check engine light came on. also, the air bag sensor light was on, headlight out again, took car to dealer, they called back and said that the alternator had been over charging and not only was the over charging burning out the headlights it also had taken out the cruise control module, and air bag module. car had only 42000 miles on it, and was 2 weeks from being out of the 5 year bumper to bumper warranty. well here it is 6 months later and 47000 miles and check engine light is back on, i have since purchased a diagnostic tool to read the codes. the car was running rough at idle. the codes came up as mis fire on cylinder 3, tps sensor failure and map barometer failure. i replaced the plugs and wires, engine still ran rough. took car back to dealer they replaced the tps, still running rough, they suggested that because of the faulty tps that the excessive dumping of fuel into the jets could have caused one of them to be clogged. i had them clean the jets as well as replace the plugs and wires again (they had also found that #3 wire had been arcing.) this took care of the idle problem. i took the car home and the next day driving the car would surge between 3rd and 4th gear, engine light back on. still have the map error. dealer ended up replacing the map sensor. it has been about a month since this last occourence and all i can do is cross my fingers until i trade it in. *ak abl.pco

While driving, the air bag light illuminated. the cause of the problem had not been identified. *ak the consumer stated the air bag light continued to be a problem, the dealer would just reset the code without identifying the problem. the driver side window went up and down by itself, the dealer replaced the master switch, the black rubber stripping was missing from the door, the cigarette lighter was inoperative, the battery failed and was replaced *jb *nm abl.pco

Airbag light keeps turning on. on march 4, 2004 my car was serviced by hyundai for this problem. the service rep. told me that the wires that run under the seat have a tendency to become disconnected. this past week, i moved the seat forward to vaccum the interior and the aribag light is back on. i moved the seat back and the light turns off. also, the same issue seems to be causing an electrical short circuit in the radio's wiring as the radio no longer works. abl.pco

 1. daughter driving car on highway when electrical components such as radio, door locks and interior lights stopped working and door chime rang continuously. on jan 22, 2005 she started car, driver's side rear window went down by itself and electrical windows and other interior electrical components stopped working. an acrid burning smell then developed as well as wisps of smoke from the door and dash. 2. as a result, and due to safety concerns about possible fire and damage to vehicle, the car was undriveable and had to be towed to repair shop. overriding concern was that possibility of fire and further damage existed. 3. inspection and investigation by repair shop indicated that the main electrical harnesses running through both front doors were corroded, shorting out and one had evidence of scoring and melting. further investigation revealed that the manufacturer, hyundai, had a technical service bulletin, #03-90-009 (which superseded #01-90-004) that addressed the condition that water could get up into the area of the wiring harnesses and cause corrosion and shorts. repair required replacement of four wiring harnesses, two on each side, and sealing the area in the car structure where the water could enter in the first place. repair completed per the manufacturer's tsb. the old wiring harnesses were kept by owner. *nm
