On friday, september 28, 2012 at approximately 9:30am i was pulling into a parking spot at the heb grocery store on i45 at 646 in league city, tx when the engine on my 2001 hyundai elantra revved and roared very loudly and surged into the pickup truck parked in the opposite spot. at the time i did not have my foot on either the gas pedal or brake. i stomped on the brake but nothing happened-it just kept revving and surging forward. i shoved the stick into park and luckily it stopped. my car was now in the space the pickup truck had been parked in, and the pickup truck was shoved out into the driving lane between parking sections. i am extremely thankful that no one was in the pickup or walking by or loading groceries nearby and no one was hurt. i was so frightened i was shaking and could barely dial 911 on my cell phone. the pickup had minor damage to its rear bumper, and my car had crushing damage to the front end (hood and bumper crumpled, grille cracked, 1 headlight broken) and a large puff of white smoke poured out briefly (no fire). the police case# is 12-4584 and the state farm insurance claim# is 53-195c-229. the car was towed by aaa to star toyota collision center at 2112 gulf freeway in league city, tx. i am awaiting their evaluation on the damage and have been told it may be totaled due to the age of the car, although it only has 55,000 miles on it. even if the car can be repaired, i am worried that the revving could happen again. the internet has numerous sites listing the same type of revving/surging problems with hyundai elantras but doesn't list a recall for this problem. what can i do in regards to this scary event? is this a major vehicle problem with this model ? i am extremely concerned and would like to hear from you as soon as possible as to what the next step should be to address this issue. *tr

Speedometer does not work in the very cold, sometimes your driving for up to 20 minutes with no speedometer. its been to the dealer at least 4 times. once the temperature goes up the speedometer works. they've replaced a sensor, a cable, and the last time they put a new speedometer in. when it's cold the new one does not work either. we left it with them for 4 days, but because the temperature was above freezing they couldn't see it not working so they could not fix it. my daughter goes to school in philadelphia(she drives it) so it works less when she's home in vernon, nj. has anyone else had any complaints about a similar problem. there's colder states then new jersey. hyundai doesn't seem to have a clue. there was not a specific incident date, it began not working in the winter of 2002 when it had just about 10,000 miles on it. *ak

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - ACCELERATOR PEDAL
08/14/200640000408/04/2001
Headlights burning out frequently was the first sign of problems, replaced them as the dealer said this was inherent to the 2001 elantra. in august 2006 check engine light came on. also, the air bag sensor light was on, headlight out again, took car to dealer, they called back and said that the alternator had been over charging and not only was the over charging burning out the headlights it also had taken out the cruise control module, and air bag module. car had only 42000 miles on it, and was 2 weeks from being out of the 5 year bumper to bumper warranty. well here it is 6 months later and 47000 miles and check engine light is back on, i have since purchased a diagnostic tool to read the codes. the car was running rough at idle. the codes came up as mis fire on cylinder 3, tps sensor failure and map barometer failure. i replaced the plugs and wires, engine still ran rough. took car back to dealer they replaced the tps, still running rough, they suggested that because of the faulty tps that the excessive dumping of fuel into the jets could have caused one of them to be clogged. i had them clean the jets as well as replace the plugs and wires again (they had also found that #3 wire had been arcing.) this took care of the idle problem. i took the car home and the next day driving the car would surge between 3rd and 4th gear, engine light back on. still have the map error. dealer ended up replacing the map sensor. it has been about a month since this last occourence and all i can do is cross my fingers until i trade it in. *ak abl.pco
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - CABLES

While traveling in traffic on the long island expressway, the gas pedal was released and it returned to its raised position by its spring. however, the accelerator cable did not release causing the vehicle to continue accelerating. with both feet on the brake pedal trying to stop the car, it still impacted the vehicle ahead. subsequent to the accident, the sticking of the accelerator cable could be replicated intermittently. by tapping and redepressing the gas pedal to the floor the cable would release. at this time, the damage to the car has prevented investigation under the hood. the vehicle damage will be repaired at a shop recommended by my insurance company. *la
