I am an owner of a 2002 hyundai elentra. in 2009 the passenger side lower control arm of my car rusted and broke in half, which i had repaired at my expense. shortly afterward, i received a recall notice about the lower control arms and took my car in to have it serviced. instead of replacing the defective parts, hyundai drilled a hole for water to escape and put a wax coating on the control arms, which would later wear off. after receiving my car back, i was under the assumption that there would no longer be an issue with the lower control arms, as i do not recall being told in person nor in writing that i should continue to monitor the status of said parts. additionally, after reviewing my receipt, it does not state anything about further maintenance of the lower control arms. on march 5, 2013 while traveling on the pennsylvania turnpike, a major highway, my driver side lower control arm broke in half, almost causing me to get into an accident. i was lucky enough to get off to the side of the highway without an accident. after having my car towed to my mechanic, he diagnosed the problem with the control arm and recommended that i have it towed to the hyundai dealership to be repaired. in my conversations with hyundai employees, hyundai dealership employees, and my own mechanic, i have discovered that this is not an isolated incident. thus it is very disconcerting as a consumer and a human being to know that hyundai has known about the defect and the fact that the recall was not a complete fix, and has done nothing to rectify the situation, whereby putting many peoples' lives in danger.

The front lower control arm on my vehicle is rusted out, and is cracked on both sides. local mechanic says it doesn't have long before it will fail. researched price on internet and found there was a recall for that part. dealer says that my vin isn't included in the recall, even though my car was sold and driven in the snow belt states that are listed, and kentucky also salts the roads during winter. my vehicle is obviously affected, but the dealer tells me to call hyundai, and hyundai tells me to go to the dealer. there are several other complaints about similar treatment, and there is little recourse offered. i was told that the nhtsa decided the details of the recall, but it was insufficient. this is a priority, my car could have a catastrophic failure any day (and thousands of other people too). the recall is campaign 091 front lower control arm corrosion

I recently bought a used 2002 hyundai elantra and discovered an abnormal amount of rust on the front control arms. in some places, holes had rusted through the control arms. hyundai did a recall for over 150,000 of my exact model including those in the state which i live back in 2009. the recall was for this exact problem. when i took the car to the dealer, they inspected the vehicle and saw that my cars problem exactly matched all those others recalled. however, they informed me that my particular car was not under this recall despite having this identical problem. they gave me an estimate of $585 to replace the arms that were a manufacturer's defect. the arms have not broken yet but they very easily could break in the near future, potentially causing a fatal accident. the recall sent out in 2009 needs to be expanded since it did not include all the cars having this problem. *tr

Received safety recall notice regarding control arm & subframe on our 2002 hyundai elantra on wed. mar 3,2010. plan was to contact dealership on sat.(mar 6,2010) to schedule appointment for the following week. received a panic call from my wife that something had snapped as she was crossing the rhinecliff bridge . fortunately this occurred just as she was exiting the toll booth. booth operator assisted her in getting car out of main flow of traffic and calling a tow truck. tow truck driver confirmed that control arm had snapped as did the hyunadi dealer (where car was purchased). dealer also said there were numerous other recalls concerning this vehicle that they would also be repairing. we were never notified of any of these with the exception of the control arm issue and in that case it failed within a few days of our notice. my question is why is it that were only notified a few days ago regarding such as serious issue when the original recall notice was dated nearly 11 months ago. and never notified regarding other recalls. by the way the dealer had the nerve to charge my wife for a loaner vehicle and said parts will need to be ordered. obviously i am very thankful that neither my wife or anyone else were injured. but i remain furious that this ever happened in the first place. *tr

While performing routine maintenance on our 2002 hyundai elantra gt, i discovered a rust hole in the drivers side lower control arm. the hole is approximately 1.5 inches in diameter located about 4 inches inward of ball joint on the upper portion of the control arm. the area surrounding the hole appeared to be very thin and brittle. the vehicle had 138000 miles at the time the issue was noticed. we have concerns about the safety of the vehicle and the structural integrity of the control arm. it seems that this is too early in the cars life to have a major structural component begin to deteriorate due to rust. of the other cars we have owned, none have displayed similar rust to this, even after 10+ years of usage.

To whom this concerns, regarding nhtsa campaign id number 09v125000. while driving my 2002 elantra the front left wheel moved (slipped/snapped) out of place to the point that it was rubbing against the back of the wheel well when trying to stop in traffic. the car did not stop as it normally would (it felt like there was no stopping power). my vehicle hit another vehicle from behind which caused significant damage to the front end of my car. i took the vehicle to moon twp auto body to get an estimate for the damage. part of the estimate was to replace the lower control arm and the adjuster wrote on the drivers side window that anyone handling the car should take caution as the control arm is ripped out. for consideration i pose this question why would the body shop estimate replacing the control arm if it wasn't broken? i've just received an invoice from the hyundai dealership (falconi's 412-269-1234) itemizing that they replaced both control arms per their campaign number 091, but that the control arm was not broken. additionally, i received pictures taken by the dealership showing significant rotting on both sides of control arm. i contend that the accident would not have occurred if the control arm had not slipped out of place. i've been in contact with hyundai corporation at 800-633-5151 and asked them to complete all repairs for the damage directly related to the accident. they continue to claim that the control arm was not rotted and displaced and will not fix the damage. my case number with hyundai is #3711968. at the time of the accident i was unaware of the recall as the previous/original owner (my father) nor myself had received a recall letter. note: a recall letter has still not been received by either of us. i moved forward as if i had no claims against anyone or any company. i have more info/photos if required.*tr

2002 hyundai elantra-great car no major problems. memorial day coming home on a secondary road approaching a stop sign-bang! couldn't move the car.a driver going by tells me don't move-the wheel is off the car! had to be towed from scene-the lower control bar had completely rusted through and let go. the metal used on this particular part is so thin it is scary! you would expect the metal used for this part would be rather thick due to the serious purpose it serves and the constant stress it must endure.at seven years old it should not be rusted away to the point of breaking in two. the only symptoms i experienced was a high pitched sound which occurred every once in a while-sounded like chain jingling, and a somewhat smoother ride like my tires were low on air. i have numerous people look at this -they walk away in disbelief when i tell them the car is seven years old, considering the rust on this control arm it is unbelievable-i am now wondering if there are others out there having the same experience. i am a school bus driver -having driven school busses for over twenty years but this experience has enlightened me to the importance of the circle check on our vehicles!!!! *tr

Left (driver's side) front control arm failure on 4/16/09. vehicle was purchased new in june of 2002. currently has approximately 93,000 miles. all routine maintenance has been performed on vehicle (i.e., oil changes, 30k service, 60k service, 90k service). control arm failed while traveling on interstate highway at a speed of approximately 30 miles per hour. *tr

After braking, my elantra jerk, made and awful grinding sound, and was extremely difficult to steer. upon visual inspection, i could see that a part had broken off. i had it towed to a local mechanic who said that the right front control arm was rotted through and that this is often seen in hyundais. the left side also shows signs of deterioration. the mechanic recommended replacing both sides, as the left side might only last a few months given the degree of deterioration. parts are being replaced. *tr
03/05/2009850001
I had to put on the brakes hard to stop from hitting a car that stopped short. the car jerked and when i began to proceed there was clearly something wrong with the front end. i got the car to our local dealer who is just a mile away from where this occurred and after the car was inspected was told that the front end came within 1/2 of corroded metal from breaking off. there was only 1/2 of metal left holding it in place. i was told the front control arms were both annhilated and were completed rusted out. i have to replace both of them at a cost of more than $1000. this car was purchased in new hampshire and spent 2002-2008 in new hampshire subject to the salt and winter conditions. it only has less than 85,000 miles on it and was treated well and serviced routinely. like other consumers, who have reported this issue, i feel that this should not have happened and that there is clearly a defect on the front control arms which allows them to become subject to corrosion. luckily i was able to drive just 1 mile to the dealer who will be performing service, but should this have happened while further away, i was told i was one pothole away from the whole front end falling off. it goes without saying that severe damage and potential personal harm could have occurred if the car had been in a collision or worse, if the control arms had broken free while on the highway or at increased speeds. this is clearly dangerous and i had no reason to think that a car that's 7 years old could suffer something like this under normal conditions. *tr

I have a 2002 hyundai elantra gls that has been garage kept since i purchased it brand new off the dealer lot. i am currently having my mechanic repair a right (passenger side) suspension control arm for my from wheel. it was rusted almost completely through and according to my mechanic would have caused a catastrophic failure where i would not have been able to control my car. i noticed this yesterday while changing my oil in preparation for taking my wife and 2 young daughters on a 1400 mile round trip vacation from cincinnati to minneapolis. the chances of my entire family getting killed in a car wreck on this trip would have been extremely high. i checked some internet forums and found several people complaining about this same thing. of course, hyundai claims no responsibility for this. i have 78k miles on my car. *tr

On my way to work one morning, i applied the brakes for stopped traffic. i heard something crack, and the car swerved to the right. after backing, and checking under the car to see if i hit something, which i didn't i proceeded, and it seemed normal until i hit the brakes again to have the same thing happen. i called a tow truck, when he arrived he looked under and told me that my lower right control arm had broken. i had it towed in at a cost of $61.00. the repair shop called and told me i was lucky i hadn't been on the turnpike, as i could have had a serious accident. the lower control arm had completely rusted through, and they hadn't seen this before. the repair cost $324.85. i called hyundai, and they issued me a case#3271798. after faxing them the bills, i waited about a week, when they called me back, they denied the claim, saying (a) the car was some 30,000 miles and a year and a half out of warranty, and (b) that this was normal wear and tear. imagine how i felt with that statement when my wife and son also are driving hyundai's. until this happened i would have bought 10 more of them, they have been great cars, but i have searched other complaints , and i t seems to be a problem that hyundai has not addressed. when mine was repaired, they looked for a used part, and were told this they were all in the same shape, and when buying the part from the dealer they had several on the shelf, indicating a problem. i would have been satisfied if they had reimbursed me, but they chose to ignore the problem. was this the only year it affects?or are there other potential accidents out there waiting to happen? *tr

Backlick road in springfield va. i gently pressed on the brakes because of slowing traffic, my car immediately slid to the left and with out warning came to a sudden halt. called 911 for police assistance in directing traffic and also aaa for towing. the car was towed to a service garage and was informed that the right control arm of my hyundai elantra 2002 was completely rusted through and broke off jamming itself into the wheel of my car causing it to not move at all. ironically, my car was just serviced by my dealership 6 days prior to this happening for an oil change, tires rotated and alignment. they never mentioned a rusty control arm. hyundai was going to charge $400 to have the control arm repaired. then i asked them for pictures of the control arm and was told that they could not do that because the camera belonged to hyundai and they did know how to get pictures to me. i told them that i would like to come in and take pictures of the control arm myself. with in minutes - they told me not to worry about it because they are going to have it covered under warranty! they did cover it under good will warranty and the part was replaced. never did the dealership acknowledge the severity this could have turned into had i been traveling on an interstate at that time. i picked up my car on monday 2/18. they brought out the rusted control arm from my car but they also brought out another one that was replaced on saturday, just as rusted through as mine had been. i took pictures of the one from my car. they would not let me keep the part because they said it had to be sent back to the manufacturer. when i called to report this problem to hyundai of america (via 800 #) they said they were closing my case because the dealership had resolved the problem and that i should be grateful for the goodwill service. i'm expecting a call from a supervisor w/in the next 24 hours. *tr
