Defect SummaryHyundai is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 elantra vehicles manufactured from july 14, 2006, through august 29, 2007. the driver's seat track position sensor determines the seat's fore and aft position and allows the driver's frontal air bag to deploy at the pressure appropriate for that seating position, with a lower pressure deployment in the most forward seating positions. the air bag control module may receive an unstable electrical signal from the seat track position sensor such that, in a crash that requires driver frontal airbag deployment, the driver's airbag may deploy at the higher pressure than intended if the seat was position in one of the forward positions in which a lower pressure deployment is intended.
Consequence SummaryA higher pressure deployment than intended increases the risk of injury resulting from airbag deployment.
Corrective SummaryDealers will reprogram the air bag control module free of charge. the safety recall is expecting to begin during april 2011. owners may contact hyundai's customer assistance center at 1-800-633-5151.

Defect SummaryHyundai is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 elantra vehicles manufactured from july 14, 2006, through november 1, 2008. the front passenger seats in the vehicles contain a weight sensor designed to deactivate the right frontal airbag when occupants of certain weights occupy the seat. the electrical connector for the weight sensor is located under the center console, between the front seats. under certain circumstances the connector could become contaminated and malfunction such that the front passenger airbag will deploy regardless of the weight of the occupant.
Consequence SummaryThe front passenger air bag could deploy in crashes in which it should not deploy, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant from the deployed air bag.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a protective cover over the weight classification system connector to prevent contamination. this service will be performed free of charge. the safety recall is expecting to begin during april 2011. owners may contact hyundai's customer assistance center at 1-800-633-5151.

Owner of a 2007 hyundai elantra (<20,000 miles). brought it in to dealership 3x for airbag light being on. now found out the dash and floor wiring harness need to be replaced due to cupholder leaking condensation onto wiring harness and shorting it out, thus disabling the air bag system. not covered under hyundai warranty. exact same problem that was issued a recall for in 2001 hyundai elantra model hyundai is recalling certain my 2001 elantra vehicles. if a liquid is spilled in the area of the cupholder on the center console, it may seep through the console opening for the parking brake lever and then drip onto the air bag control module electrical connector. the spilled liquid may contaminate the air bag control module and its electrical connector to the air bag wiring harness and cause the supplemental restraint system (srs) warning light to illuminate. *tr
09/28/2009330851
The incident is liquid that dripped into the emergency brake causing wires to melt for the airbag system. the cup holders are located directly beside the emergency brake. the emergency brake housing, contains the wiring harness for the vehicle. there is no sort of protective device to keep liquids from getting on the wiring. what happened in my instance is that liquid must have dripped off of a cup in the cupholder, not sure how condensation off of a cup, could cause insulated wires to melt, but it dripped into the console area and melted the air bag wiring harness. it requires a complete replacement of the harness. warranty not covered because it is not a part defect. safety hazard because it can cause a fire if not fixed. should have a protective cover in the event of something like this occurring. *tr
08/04/2009452001
Air bag sensor light consistently on in 2007 hyundai elantra. taken to dealership and they reported that the wiring had been shorted out by soft drink spilling into the console from the cup holders and shorting out the wiring harness, disabling the air bags. there are no warning stickers on the console warning of the risk of leakage from the cupholder into the console and no warning to this effect in the owner?s manual. wiring harness was replaced and owner cautioned by technician and service manager on danger of liquid seeping from cup holder into console and recommended not using console cup holders but ones in back seat instead. research on the internet resulted in discovery that this exact same problem had resulted in a national highway traffic safety administration recall of the 2001 - 2002 hyundai elantras requiring installation of a protective cover to correct the problem. apparently the problem has not been resolved in the 2007 elantra and a design flaw still exists such that a minor spill from the cup holder installed on the console can short out the wiring making the airbag inoperable and putting the passengers at risk and resulted in at least one death prior to the earlier recall.  2007 hyundai elantra gls. air bag light comes on indicating there is some malfunction with air bag deployment. i've had this covered under warranty last year (may 2008) and hyundai replaced the air bag sensor by the driver's seat. the air bag light is once again on right now. by simply moving the driver's seat back and forth, apparently leads to the failure/malfunction of the air bags. this seems to be a faulty air bag sensor that so often breaks down at the place that it has been installed. *tr

Dear representative i purchased the 2007 hyundai elantra gs for my son in december due to it's market safety ratings. i was ensured by the sales teams and reports that this car was safe. this morning my son was in a bad accident, and the airbags did not deploy. the car rear side window was crushed, the top of car was pushed inward and pinned under a pipe fence, the driver side where the gas tank was located was smashed to the point that components melted together. also, there was major damage to the tires/rim, side ,and front of the car. bumpers in the front and back were dislodged and shredded in some areas. this was not acceptable to sell cars that air bags did not deploy with the amount of damage sustained. i wish to file an official complaint against hyundai. i would like to know what outside organization's could i register the complaint with. hyundai could have cost my son his life to make a quick buck.*ak

I would like to file a complaint against hyundai. i was recently involved in an accident in a 07' hyundai elantra in which i was hit by another vehicle on the driver's side. the posted speed limit was 45 mph and i'm sure that the driver was going at least that speed if not faster. the crash smashed the driver door, a portion of the back seat door as well as dislodging part of the front bumper. my front tire was also flat and bent out of shape. i was unable to open the driver-side door so i had to crawl out the passenger side. when i was hit, i felt as if i was about to pass out. my vision was black and fuzzy and i felt light-headed. i ended up having a large bump on my head, bruises on my shoulder as well as a bruise on my knee. i am very upset that the airbags didn't deploy because had the driver been going a little bit faster or had i been in a more serious accident i could have been seriously injured if not killed. one of the reasons i purchased the car was because of its so called 5 star safety rating. had i known hyundai had a problem with their airbags i never would have purchased the vehicle. i also noticed another complaint on this car for the same reason. i feel that hyundai should make a statement about the disfunctional airbags if not recall the vehicle altogether. furthermore i believe they need to stop advertising the safety features of the car until the problems are fixed. i would be very interested in knowing what my legal options are. *jb
