Defect SummaryHyundai is recalling 532,633 my 2006-2007 accent, entourage, sonata, my 2007 azera, elantra and santa fe, my 2005-2007 tucson and my 2007-2008 veracruz vehicles. the stop lamp switch in the affected vehicles may malfunction. a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause the brake lights to remain illuminated when the brake pedal is released. a stop lamp switch malfunction may also affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature so the transmission shifter would not be able to be shifted out of the park position. it may also cause the electronic stability control (esc) malfunction light to illuminate, and it may not deactivate the cruise control when the brake pedal is depressed.
Consequence SummaryAny of these malfunctions, alone or in combination, may lead to a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the stop lamp switch free of charge. the recall began on june 29, 2009. owners may contact the hyundai customer assistance center at 1-800-633-5151.

By letter dated april 15, 2009, hyundai notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall number 09v122) to replace the stop lamp switches on many of its model year 2005-2008 vehicles.see recall 09v122 for a complete list. the agency opened its investigation based on five complaints of stop lamp failure across several 2007 hyundai models. the agency also received early warning (ewr) reports on this issue.most of those failures were traced to the improper operation of the stop lamp switch that controls stop lamp illumination.a malfunctioning stop lamp switch can cause the vehicle's brake lights not to light during braking, or alternatively, it can cause the brake lights to stay lit even when a driver takes the foot off the brake pedal. failure of the stop lamps to illuminate properly creates the hazard of rear end collisions when drivers following the subject vehicle do not recognize that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. hyundai reported one crash incident (a frontal impact), without injury, that was alleged to have been caused by this defect.the agency reviewed the incident and cannot conclude that it is related to this defect. there are other potential problems related to failure of the stop lamp switch: failure of the cruise control to disengage, interference with proper functioning of antilock brakes and electronic stability control, and inability to move the gear shift lever out of park position.based on the above safety recall, this investigation is closed.

A friend driving behind me noticed my break lights not working when approaching a red light. when we parked we tested them and none of the rear break lights work. i do not know how long my break lights have not been working but it is a major safety issue considering i drive in rush hour traffic in a city daily. there is currently a recall (campaign 09v122000) that i would have expected to include the 2007 hyundai elantra that i drive, but it appears that my particular vin is not included (yet). i am also bothered that i had to do all this research. when the car dealership and the hyundai customer service entered my vin, this recall doesn't even show up as a possible inclusion. i understand my vehicle was not part of the recall but considering other vehicles of my make, model, and year are susceptible to this particular recall, i would have hoped that it would red flag other vehicles that could be susceptible. or at the very least, when a recall does occur, other owners of similar vehicles should be informed in an effort for those owners to watch out for the safety issues that may arise.

While pulling into parking space at shopping center coming to stop then car suddenly lurched over a parking stop post and curb going into a building i managed to get brakes to stop vehicle before hitting the building .. i did not know what happened. while reading problems about the 2007 model i found another person with the same problem. i was looking at problem due to a popping sound when turning the vehicle. there seem to be many of those already reported. we took to the dealer and the vehicle was out of warranty at 60,000 miles and we have 68,000 now so they wanted $65 just to look at the vehicle. i have taken the car to another dealership. while 2007 year model has no recall it sounds like it should for this problem. *tr

Own a 2007 hyundai elantra. last year i had to take it to the dealer after the shift gear locked on me in the drive position. i was unable to move the shift to the parked position had to use a screw driver to manually release the gear and shifted to park. i drove my car home that day the next day i used a screw driver again and shifted to drive and drove the car to the dealer. on the way to the dealer other driver on the road blew their horns alerted me that i had no brake lights. eventhough my head lights and rear lights were on. i pulled over and sure enough the brake lights were not working. i again went through the motions with the shifter and manage to drive the car to the dealer with the emergency flashers on. at the dealer they told me that the brake switch that operated the brake lights and shift gear burnt out and was replaced. i expressed the seriousness of the situation, driving around with no brake lights and the dealer just brushed it off and told me that i would not have the problem again. well yesterday (9/11/08) it happened to me again on my way to my job in jersey city new jersey. the shifter locked in the drive position and the brake lights were out again. again i had to manually shift the gear to park then back to drive in order to drive to my job a few minutes away from the incident. at 11pm i drove from my job to my home, without brake lights. this morning i drove my car under the same conditions to the hyundai in north plainfield, new jersey to get the car repaired. again i expressed the seriousness of this situation how it could cause a serious accident. the dealer again indicated that the problem was caused by a faulty brake switch, they changed the switch and told me that the problem was repaired that i should not experience it again. i am reporting this to your agency because this is a life threatening situation having no brake lights and shifter locking into place without any warning. i feel the car should be recalled. *tr

Have had to replace brakes twice since purchase. rusted last repair had only 5000miles before it needed to be replaced again.

Hyundai didn't fully assess recall id # 09v122000 on the brake stop light. mine has malfunctioned twice in 1.5 years, yet they are now telling me that i am not a part of the recall. this is a very serious issue that can also involve the cruise control not stopping, shifting problems, and a possible rear-end accident. this needs to be looked in to - more people than originally estimated can be at serious risk - not to mention more people are paying to having this fixed by their dealer (i.e. me) than there should be!
