Defect SummaryOn certain sport utility vehicles equipped with 3.5 liter v-6 engines, 4-wheel drive and antilock braking systems (abs), if the brake pedal is depressed at speeds between 3 and 12 mph when the brake pad friction surfaces are wet, a vibration may occur between the brake discs and pads causing abs sensor electronic signal noise to develop. at speeds below 5 mph, the abs sensor signal noise may cause the abs electronic control unit (ecu) to activate the abs, extending the stopping distance.
Consequence SummaryIf an extended stopping distance occurs, it could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will reprogram the abs ecu. owner notification began on march 24, 2004. owners should contact hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.
NotesHyundai recall no. 065. customers can also contact the national highway traffic safety administration

On 9/13/2011, in san juan, pr, at approximately 4:00 p.m., my mother (74 years old) was driving her 2004 hyundai santa fe at a very slow rate of speed on a wet concrete road. while approaching a red light, and while still far away from it, she applied her vehicle's brakes with no avail. the vehicle continue moving forward and stop only after hitting a car waiting for the light to change green. that impact caused this vehicle (v-1) to move forward and hit another vehicle (v-2) which was also waiting for the light to changed. my mother received a heavy impact force to her chest, shoulders, and neck area produced not only by impacting the vehicles in front of her but also because her vehicle's air bags were deployed. her santa fe was also badly damaged.

The 1st -dec. 23 2004. my husband and i was traveling on the interstate and the car began to slow down. my husband pulled to the side of the road and there was smoke coming from the brakes. after getting out and inspecting for problems we got back in the car and attempted to proceed forward and the car would not move. we called the tow truck. by the time car got to the service department, they were able to drive the vehicle. when they did their inspection, they could not find any problems. we went a week later and pick the car up and drove away. within 2 weeks, a similar problem arose, but the car was still drivable; therefore we did not take it in, but did call to inform the dealership of the problem. in february 2006, the problem came again and the car had to be towed to the nearest dealer. initially there was no problem found, but i requested they check the brakes and it was a faulty master cylinder. this was replaced. within 2 months, we were pulling from the driveway and it appeared my husband had mistakenly put his foot on the gas, however we were sure it was the brakes and the engine revved up and continued to move forward. we called and reported and they said we could bring it in for service., however they rely on the computer to indicate the problem. no problem existed based on the computer. as recent as saturday, april 8, 2006, my son and i was driving and i was pulling behind a line of cars that were stopping at a stop light and the engine revved as i put my foot on the brakes. the car did not stop until i quickly put it in park. we took the car in today, monday, april 10 and again, no problem being found. i called the hyundai customer service, who is investigating the incident. my concern is that we know that there is a problem, but since we now rely solely on computer to locate problems we may never get the problem solved. i hope it doesn't take an accident to get this problem resolved. *nm

Brake failure of my 2004 hyundai, santa fe. the car had 1,940 miles on it at the time of the incident. i braked, to stop behind a car that was stopped for another car turning left. the brake pedal went to the floor and my car rolled into the stopped car. hyundai is denying there is anything wrong with the car! i have been without a car for a month now (without a rental car due to the fact they can find nothing wrong) and they tell me, to pursue the cause of the failure, will take up to two months. one of the three dealer mechanics that looked at the car told me they had this happen before (brake failure, and could find nothing wrong then either). after checking the nhtsa website, i find 4 other brake failure complaints similar to mine since october 8th of 2003, with hyundai denying there is any problem with the cars. i believe there is definitely a problem with this many incidents in such a short time frame(how many have not been reported to your website?). *la

I am suspicious of the braking system of the 2004 hyundai santa fe. once, when driving in wet conditions and approaching an intersection, i tried to stop quickly and the brakes made a strange clumping noise and did not slow the vehicle. i ended up in the middle of the intersection with crossing traffic coming at me. in another incident, while simply driving along the road, one of the tires ran over a shallow impression in the road , not even the size of a pot hole, and the braking system immediately lost hydraulic pressure with the brake pedal depressing to the floor without resistance. the vehicle was traveling down a hill and lost braking ability for approximately 3-5 seconds. luckily nothing more serious occurred.*ak

Abs brakes engaging prematurely. 1st instance after heavy rain stopped at stop sign on slight slope abs engaged and kept moving vehicle out onto road. dealer could not find any problem, however there was a recall to adjust brakes. 2nd instance on snow covered down grade vehicle in front stopped to make left turn and i put my foot on brake ,immediately the abs brakes engaged causing my vehicle to slide into the other vehicle the engaging of the abs brakes increased the stopping distance of my vehicle and caused the accident abs brakes are worthless in slow stops on slippery roads and there should be a switch to shut them off. *jb

10/11/2005 - breaks failed at low speed at traffic signal - managed to coast to stop before hitting vehicle ahead of me. brought vehicle to dealership service department on 10/12/05 - they indicated that they could not reproduce concern. operates normally : on 12/16/05 the problem re-occured resulting in my vehicle hitting the vehicle ahead of me at traffic light intersection (again i applied breaks at a speed of between 5 & 10 miles per hour. breaks initially seem to grab then dissappear with pedal going to floor board with no affective breaking. *nm

Three months ago, while i was fully stopped at an intersection with my foot on the brakes, my 2004 santa fe suddenly revved up and surged forward, colliding with the car in front of me. this had happened once before (without a collision) and the dealer stated no problem found. it has now been in the shop three months, and the dealer still states no problem found. i contacted hyundai consumer affairs who wrote me back stating they had concluded that there was no defect which caused this problem (they never inspected it, however). the car is being traded in; the dealer is being generous on the trade allowance. however, hyundai still maintains there is no problem and i am told the car will go to auction. hyundai motor america has taken no action to investigate this serious safety defect.

When applying brakes, the vehicle would not stop accordingly. when taken to get serviced, it was determined to be due to the vacuum hose and dirt on the abs sensor.

I purchased my new car on 02/09/04 at bronx hyundai. it is a 4-wheel drive 3.5 ltr engine hyundai santa fe. upon driving i felt a hard knocking-vibrating sound when i drive on local (dry) streets and then a feeling that the car jumps (lunge forwards)after i stop. on several occasions i thought someone hit me from behind. this continues to happen only when i drive locally. the car has never done this on the highway, which is part of my daily commute. i wasn't sure why at first, the car did that and i thought it was part of the tracking control system(4-wheel drive even though the road conditions were dry. in every incident, the car feels like it is not going to stop, but it does. i am afraid because when the car jumps and if i get too close to someone it can hit a car in front of me, or even a person crossing. so, i was happy receive my recall notice stating the exact problem i was going through i then called and took the car to the dealer and told them what was happening. i hoped the programming would work since my problem was similar to the recall symptoms. that is when this nightmare began and it was on april 9, 2004. since then, the dealer has been very cooperative but they seem at a loss also. my car was programmed twice and then the abs sensor replaced and a chip also(this was done last monday). i have taken my car 5 times as of today. my car continues to do the knocking/grinding sound and on 2 occasions the last being on may 29; the abs, tcs and the 4-wheel drive lights on the interior control panel have flickered and stayed on as well. (when this happened my car did the knocking/vibrating noise as well.) it has become a daily occurance so now i am documenting all of my incidents and i am getting afraid to drive my car. so today i gave my car back to the dealer and they told me that they will contact the main office at hyundai. all parts and service were not charged and replaced with new hyundai parts.*ak

2004 hyundai santa fe with brake failure. consumer states that hyundai has not come up with a reason why this failure has occurred. consumer barely missed an accident by applying the emergency brake and sliding to a stop. *kb the consumer stated a recall had been issued for the abs, however his vehicle was not included the recall. the dealer suggested all types of scenario's for the brake failure. the consumer suspected there may be a defect in the abs. the consumer stated the brakes were applied and slowing the vehicle normally when they suddenly disengaged. the consumer stated he was unable to disengage the cruise control system by depressing the brake pedal, and the vehicle continued to accelerate. the cruise control was manually disengaged by pressing the cruise control off button after pressing the brake pedal several times failed to disengage the system.

The problem started december 27, 2004 as i was pulling up a private drive and attempting to stop my sante fe. as i approached the top of the drive i applied braking, my vehicle slowed and came close to what i thought would be a full stop when the abs brake system suddenly activated. i held the brake pedal down but the braking distance increased and it was then that it made contact with a parked truck. the vehicles hit front bumper to front bumper. fortunately no one was injured but both vehicles were damaged from the impact. my vehicle had been recalled previously for a problem with the abs brakes
