We have a 2007 hyundai santa fe and have had a problem with the passenger-side air bag since the car was new, but the dealer was never able to fix it. our dealer (phil long hyundai, colorado springs) now says that the vin for our car is not included in the passenger air bag recall. is there any way to expand the cars affected so ours can be fixed - or encourage them to fix our car? *tr

My local vehicle service department in maryland will not fix the current air bag recall (nhtsa campaign id number: 11v472000), because the vehicle was bought in guam. they claimed that us recalls don't apply to cars bought in guam, even though they researched the issue and found that the reason my air bag light is illuminated is because of a faulty clock spring, the same as the recall. i now have a vehicle with a safety recall in the united states and the manufacturer refuses to fix it, which means my air bag will not work.

The airbag light in the instrument cluster came on and now stays on while the car is being operated. this is the fourth time in less than a year that this has happened. i'm told that when this light is on the airbag system is not operating and will not function when needed. the prior three times this happened, the incident was addressed by my hyundai dealer, king hyundai in deerfield beach, fl. in one case, there was a recall by hyundai for a clock spring replacement which king hyundai claims they have completed, yet the light keeps coming on, usually within one month of having it repaired at the dealer. there are numerous complaints about this all over the internet yet there are no permanent solutions from hyundai while there is a significant risk undertaken by drivers of this vehicle when the government mandated airbag system is disengaged, thus i implore you to force hyundai to once again recall all affected vehicles that seem to commonly have this problem and permnantly fix them.

The clock spring contact asssembly, installed behind the steering wheel, that provides electrical connection between driver's air bag and air bag control module failed in june, 2010. this safety hazard had to be repaired on june 24, 2010 and i had to pay for the deductible of $100 on the extended warranty. hyundai recently announced a vehicle recall on this safety hazard (campaign 103)--but refuses to accept my claim for repair reimbursement of the repair deductible because i had the car repaired prior to the dates they allowed for this condition. i've owned several hyundai's and this is absurd. my repair was june 24, 2010 and they won't allow claims for any repair prior to september 8, 2010 (a mere 10.5 weeks difference)! claim 475-7278. it's the same problem that was repaired.

I received a recall letter from hyundai concerning the airbags in the vehicle. i realized that my airbag light on my dash had been on for a long time, perhaps a year or two, but i thought that was normal and didn't realize it meant it didn't work. i brought my vehicle to the dealer and they performed the repair related to the recall. the dealer stated that the repair did not fix the problem as the airbag light was still on. i agreed to pay the diagnostic charge so the dealer could find the problem. the dealer says there is a short in the wiring harness that is the cause of the problem which would cost $1500 to fix. they said the srs computer and airbag sensor may also need to be replaced for a cost of $600 and $400 respectively.

At 61,179 miles the air bags light on the dashboard appeared lite. dealership troubshot to a faulty air bag computer. computer not covered under extended warranty. noticed on nhtsa website a few higher milege vechiles are experiencing this problem. requesting an investigation into hyundai's quality practtices relating to potential saftey issues. if the air bag computer is malfuctioning will airbags still deploy in an accident? nhtsa- question - if not is this a re-callable event. please advise all hyundai santa fe owners whether this a saftey hazard and what preventative measures can be taken.

My esc light comes on and goes off intermittently while driving, this has been happening for probably the past year. i have never noticed any effect on the performance of the vehicle and since i didn't know what esc was i did not pay it a great deal of attention to it. my passenger air bag light also does this coming on and going off thing so i assumed it was a weird dash light glitch. about 4 months ago vehicle started having electrical problems (power door locks sometimes stop working). finally today i noticed my rear brake lights were not coming on... obviously i was very concerned and called hyundai to find out if there were any recalls. hyundai gave me a case # but said my vehicle is not covered under current recall, so i am not sure if anything is wrong?

The air bag warning light in the main dash console stays illuminated after starting the vehicle. i have contacted hyundaiusa.com customer service & they just referred me to the dealer where i purchased the vehicle certified used and they said that the original warranty did not transfer when bought used (5 yrs/60,000 miles). just to get the problem diagnosed would be $95. so i researched on the internet nhsta website and i found all of the same complaints about this year, make & model. accidents have been reported where the airbag malfunctions, sensor warning does not work properly, etc. so my question to the nhsta is why hasn't this vehicle been recalled for airbag warning light malfunction with all of the complaints you have received? this is a dangerous safety issue especially if it prevents airbags from deploying in an accident. please investigate with hyundai & hopefully this can be corrected with a recall. thank you

Tl-the contact owns a 2007 hyundai santa fe. the contact stated that when starting the vehicle the air bag warning light illuminated on the instrumental panel. the vehicle was taken to dealer for inspection and they informed her that there was a wiring malfunction in the steering column and it may not allow for the air bags to deploy in case of a crash. the vehicle has not been repaired. the manufacturer was also contacted and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 70,000. the vin was unavailable. tb

This complaint refers to the srs airbag system in the santa fe. while the airbag system is intact i have been told by a certified hyundai repair center that the clock spring and the junction box have failed. given the premature nature of this failure i believe that this system is flawed and represents a widespread hazard to the american public. in addition, all four brake rotors and the sway bar needed to be replaced with less than 70,000 miles due to excessive wear which rendered them unsafe (according to the aforementioned center).

I own a 2007 santa fe with 30,000 miles. when i am seated on the passenger side the air bag sensor will state that it is inoperative, not recognizing me as a passenger. i weigh 134 lbs which should be more than enough for the air bag sensor and i am really concerned since the front airbag will not work in the event of a crash. that could result in an injury to me or someone of similar size. i have talked with two dealerships about this issue. both recognized the issue as a common problem. the first dealership told me that nothing could be done unless hyundai issues a recall like they did for the sonatas (see campaign id 08v161000). the second dealer offered to replace the seat (which they did back in 2009), however that has did not solved the problem at all. please consider researching this issue as hyundai has recognized this problem with the sonatas already and it is the same issue in the santa fe models.
12/01/20071001
2007 hyundai santafe - passenger side air bag indicator light shows that the air bags are sometimes turned off when an adult weighing 125 lbs is in the seat. problem also occurs periodically when a 150 lb adult is in the passenger seat. we have requested that hyundai repair this defect, but their dealer just runs a test and tells us that it operates as designed. the problem does not occur when the same passenger sits in a 2009 santafe (at the same dealer, with the maintenance manager witnessing from the drivers seat). *tr

Air bag warning light came on and remained on. first incident, may 2008. i have brought the car to the dealer three times for repair operations, and a few more times for diagnostic checks, but the problem persists. attempts at repair have included replacement of the front passenger seat and the air bag system control module. some of those repair operations seemed to work for a while, but the problem keeps returning. *tr

2007 santa fe taken in for the 2nd time today as the airbag indicator light is permanently on. the 1st time this happened (few months ago) they replaced the sensor, but it has happened again. at the same time, the 'beep' when locking the car disappears. am concerned that the airbag will not deploy correctly. *tr

Air bag light is on for the third time in two years of ownership, dealer claims to have replaced a sensor on the second visit. i am concerned in the unlikely event of a frontal crash the air bags will not deploy. it also causes the alarm to go off 15 seconds after locking doors. *tr

I have also had this problem on my 2007 santa fe limited (the airbag indicator and the alarm sounding for no reason at the same time). they both started happening at the same time. i have the airbag indicator illuminated in the lower right hand corner of the dashboard control panel. i took it to the dealership on this past monday (23 june 2008) and they were able to see the error code. but could not determine what the actual problem is. so they cleared the error code, changed the oil, and washed it. the dealership told me to come back if it happens again. the funny thing about this problem is that it comes and goes. as i was driving to the dealership, the indicator went off. but once i got to the dealership and they went to check it, it came back on and stayed on. well, it happened again the very next day. i called the dealership and they have instructed me to bring it in because this should not be happening. they have offered to put me in a loaner car while they investigate what is going on with my truck. oh i forgot to tell you what happened after they cleared the code. after they cleared the code on the 23rd, the alarm does not sound when you press the control button twice. they disarmed something on the other day. i

I own a 07 hyundai santa fe. ever since i bough the car in october i have had trouble with the passenger side air bag sensor. when i sit in the passenger side the air bag sensor either does not sense my weight and turns the air bag off or it actually turns the air bag on, but it fluctuates between on and off. i have read the manual, and i am sitting properly according to hyundai instructions. i have taken the car to the hyundai dealer, and the best they could tell me was sit in the back mam. however i do not think this is a reasonable response. i have read many other complaints about the same problem, and i fee the air bag or sensor is not working properly , and this is unsafe. one of the reasons i bough this car was the safety features, and it is disapointing that those features do not work properly, and yet hyundai will not fix it. i fear that i or someone else may be seriously injured due to this problema dn i i do not feel it is reasonable to say well sit in the back soemething needs to be done about this. please take my complaint into consideration. i strongly feel there is a problem and hyundai is overlooking this. for my safety and the safety of others we all need help to get this probled corrected. *ak

Tl- the contact owns a 2007 hyundai sante fe. he stated that the passenger side airbag off warning light continued to illuminate. the dealer advised that the occupant of the seat must weigh 110 pounds or more in order for the air bag to engage. the contact was concerned because for a small statured person, the air bag would not engage if needed. the dealer advised they were unable to make repairs to adjust to a person's weight. in addition, the contact stated if on a slight incline, the emergency brake would not engage. the dealer advised the contact that the failure was normal in his specific make and model. the vehicle was not repaired for either failure. the failure mileage was approximatley 105 and current mileage was 34,688. *kmj

When my wife is seated in the passenger seat the air bag sensor will not recognize that a person is occupying the passenger seat. my wife weighs approximately 140 lbs. this has been a regular problem for the last few years and has not gone away. it is the same problem as the current nhtsa campaign (08v161000) for 2006-2008 hyundai sonatas for which hyundai has issued a recall. we have visited multiple dealerships and they have all told us this is a common problem with the santa fe, however since hyundai has not issued a recall there is nothing they can do to fix the problem. this is a very dangerous problem as both the front and side passenger air bags will not deploy in an accident which could result in serious injury or death to a passenger. we currently own a 2007 hyundai santa fe with 37,000 miles.

When my partner sits on passenger side, the air bag light indicator remains on, indicating that air bag is off. she is 54 yrs old, 5'2, 113 lbs. when previously brought to dealer, they state that there is no problem with the sensor & the air bag. they called hyundai, and then told me that it is set for 125-130 lbs but could not give me that in writing. please, i'm afraid for her safety. hyundai should rewire & put in a switch to turn air bag off. not the other way around, the way it is now. i don't have any children so turning off the airbag manually is not a problem. traveling in the car is not only not safe, but not enjoyable. until you can force hyundai to fix the problem, she will have to sit in the back. it is not right. what is going to take to correct the problem, someone's death. please, i hope it is corrected before that happens. i have been on numerous forums that indicate many people across the country are having the same problem & hyundai won't fix it like they did with the sonata. please do something. thank you in advance. *tr

Airbag system (passenger side) doesn't always sense the occupant accurately, in a 2007 hyundai santa fe. the vehicle's front-passenger airbag off warning light came on whenever a small adult was in the seat, or would intermittently turn off depending on the person's sitting position. this affects my 125 pound wife who by hyundai's test is considered a person of smaller stature. i was told 130 lbs is the minimum weight to enable the airbag but again depending on her sitting position, the light will go on and off. the same system works fine in a 2009 hyundai sonata in which she would be protected. why is there a difference? *tr
10/01/200711
The passenger front air bag sensor located in the seat does not correctly classify my wife (130 lbs.) as an adult. as a result, the passenger front air bag and passenger side impact air bags are not consistently activated. the passenger air bag off indicator light located on the dash is on at least 30% or more of the time of travel. this system is not dependable in the event of a front or side impact. there is no way to know when the system will be activated and protecting my wife. she weighs 130 pounds in body weight. i believe the sensor in the seat is poorly designed and ultimately unreliable and unsafe. *tr

We have a 2007 hyundai santa fe and the front passenger seat air bag indicator is malfunctioning. my wife (the passenger) is 5' 3' and 115 pounds. she sits in the seat properly as stated in the manual, however sometimes the air bag light is illuminated off indicating that the system is not active (air bag system will not engage in case of a frontal crash), other times (30%) it works properly. i've taken it to the dealer 3 times, 4379, 5767 and 11,421 miles. they replaced the seat but it didn't change anything. they said they could do nothing else and my wife should sit in the back seat. when we test drove this vehicle everything worked fine, three weeks later the problem started. my wife and i have become reluctant to drive this vehicle in its current condition. if hyundai motor america cannot fix this problem as they have stated, they should replace or buy this (these) vehicles back. i can't understand how this vehicle received a 5 star crash rating with so many similar complains about the same problem. *tr

Passenger airbag on/off indicator light reads off, although a 5'3, 125lb adult is seated in passenger. brought to dealer service dept attention, told i needed to wiggle in the seat to get all four sensors to activate. occasionally this technique will get the light to no longer illuminate, but if you move your position slightly - the light read off once again.*tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 hyundai santa fe. from the date of purchase, the contact has experienced air bag light failure with the vehicle. the dealer was able to repair the failure on the driver's side, but not the passenger side. the air bag light intermittently illuminates with or without an occupant in the passenger seat. he took the vehicle back to the dealer and they performed a diagnostic on the seat. they replaced the seat with a new one, but the failure was still present. the dealer then reinstalled the old seat, but replaced the seat module. this also did not correct the failure. the mechanic could not identify the cause of the failure and no further repairs have been made. the failure mileage was 5,000 and current mileage was 33,000. updated 08/01/08

I bought a 2007 hyundai santa fe limited 3 weeks ago. we have noticed that repeatedly and unpredictably that the passenger side air bag sensor illuminates, indicating that the air bag has turned off, while my wife is riding in the front seat. she is average size for an adult female, and there is absolutely no reason that this should occur. i find this to be completely unacceptable and very, very dangerous. this vehicle needs to be recalled and this feature absolutely has to be corrected. 12,000 of the 2005 santa fe's were recalled and a class action suit was filed for an airbag sensor problem and the 2007 version of this vehicle should be recalled immediately.!! this is extremely dangerous!!! unnecessary death(s) are imminent if this is not corrected. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 hyundai santa fe. while driving between 5 and 60 mph, the passenger side air bag warning light was illuminating intermittently. the dealer inspected the vehicle approximately five times and is unable to determine the cause of failure. no repairs were made. the current mileage was 21,000 and failure mileage was 1,000. the consumer stated the passenger seat was replaced in july 2007, however there was still no change in operation. updated 10/24/07. *jb

Purchased a 2007 hyundai santa fe in feb/07. the passenger side airbag light intermittently turns on (airbag is inactivated) and off (no light means airbag activated) when my 5'6 120lbs wife sits in the seat. all positional suggestions in the manual (sitting straight up, feet flat on the floor, etc) have been adhered to with the same intermittent result. i would hazard a guess and say that the passenger airbag is off 75% of the time when she sits in the seat. the only suggestion we have received from the dealership is to sit in the back seat. *tr

2007 hyundai santa fe. consumer writes in regards of airbag recall.*smd the consumer stated the air bag light illuminated. the dealer stated they rectified the recall issue, but they mentioned that although they reset the air bag light/sensor, the problem identified for the front sensor short, to the battery, was tracked to the under hood junction box, which was different than what the recall was for.

When i sit in the passenger seat, the airbag light indicates off. i weigh 130 lbs and i have read the owners manual on this topic. it does not matter how i am positioned in the seat, this function does not work correctly. i have visited my service department and called hyundai consumer affairs. they state that the unit is working as designed, but cannot describe how it is designed to work, ie, what weight limit sets the airbag to on position. as a normal sized adult, i feel that my airbag should be operational. i do not feel safe in this vehicle. please advise hma to repair this problem. *tr

I am a 120# 5'6 female 30 years old. when sitting in the passenger front seat of my hyundai santa fe 2007 model, if i move to even shift weight right or left, the airbag light goes on and off. i do not move forward or back, my seat back is in the upright position. hyundai says that this is due to federal guidelines and that there is nothing they can do. it is because i am between 110 and 120#. is this true? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 hyundai santa fe. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer because the air bag light was illuminated on the instrument panel. the dealer ordered a fuse box, but that did not correct the failure. they ordered the same part again, but the light remains illuminated. he filed a complaint with hyundai consumer affairs. the air bag has not yet deployed unexpectedly. the powertrain was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 6,000. updated 11/14/07 *tr

Major safety issue. the passenger side air bag light comes on and goes off all while riding down the road with a passenger over 80 lbs riding in the seat. on an average trip of 30 mins the light will sometimes come on and stay on or will come and go indicating that the airbag will not deploy in the case of an accident. we also have a 2007 accent that is doing the same thing just not as often. the dealership has provided me with a loaner car for four weeks now because they have told me they don't know how to fix the problem. my loaner has the same problem as well. after researching the problem on the internet i have found that there are several cases of this happening out there and hyundai doesn't seem to be fixing the problem. they told me that when that light is on that the air bag will not in fact deploy. this problem happens everytime we get in the car to go somewhere so there are too many failures to list. i feel it to be very unsafe to place anyone in the front seat due to the possibility of serious injuries or death in the case of an accident. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 hyundai santa fe. he stated that the air bag warning indicator light illuminated three times. the dealer cleared the codes for the air bag and replaced the passenger side front seat twice. the air bag module was also replaced. the failure mileage was 6,000 and the current mileage was 7,750.

I own a 2007 hyundai sonata. the problem is the passenger air bag does not always enable when my usual 115 pound passenger sits on the passenger seat. there is no problem when a heavier person sits on the seat, but when my usual passenger (who is my 75 year old wife) sits on the seat the air bag seat sensors do not always activate. the service department at a hyundai dealership referred me to the manual which describes the proper seating position. when my passenger sits in exactly in that manner, about 60% of the time the seat sensor activates the passenger air bag. apparently the sensors are set to trigger at or near 115 pounds. and what clothing she wears determines if she is protected by the air bag or not. i also own a 2005 hyundai tucson, a compact suv. there is absolutely no problem activating the passenger air bag when my passenger sits on that seat. i believe there is a safety problem because a mature adult does not activate a passenger air bag. i am sure others have the same problem. hyundai should provide a method for changing the trigger weight of their sensors. *jb

Front passenger occupant classification sensor is not classifying my wife correctly and disabling the front passenger airbag when she sits in the seat. contacted my local hyundai dealer and they said this is the way it works and there is nothing they can do. (they did contact someone at hyundai who told them this) *jb

When my wife sits in the passenger seat of our 2007 hyundai sonata, sometimes the light on the dash is lit, indicating the car does not sense a passenger is sitting there. in the event of a crash, the airbag would not deploy. the dealer replaced the jell pack under the seat but the problem is continuing. my wife is 57 and weighs 126 lbs. the dealer said to be careful about posture. we drove the car to pennsylvania and back without a problem. *nm
AIR BAGS - SIDE/WINDOW
04/22/2010

*tr
