By letter dated april 15, 2009, hyundai notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall number 09v122) to replace the stop lamp switches on many of its model year 2005-2008 vehicles.see recall 09v122 for a complete list. the agency opened its investigation based on five complaints of stop lamp failure across several 2007 hyundai models. the agency also received early warning (ewr) reports on this issue.most of those failures were traced to the improper operation of the stop lamp switch that controls stop lamp illumination.a malfunctioning stop lamp switch can cause the vehicle's brake lights not to light during braking, or alternatively, it can cause the brake lights to stay lit even when a driver takes the foot off the brake pedal. failure of the stop lamps to illuminate properly creates the hazard of rear end collisions when drivers following the subject vehicle do not recognize that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. hyundai reported one crash incident (a frontal impact), without injury, that was alleged to have been caused by this defect.the agency reviewed the incident and cannot conclude that it is related to this defect. there are other potential problems related to failure of the stop lamp switch: failure of the cruise control to disengage, interference with proper functioning of antilock brakes and electronic stability control, and inability to move the gear shift lever out of park position.based on the above safety recall, this investigation is closed.

Brake light switch malfunction caused vehicle transmission shifter to be stuck in drive or reverse. vehicle transmission shifter could not be shifted into park. malfunction also caused electronic stability control to shut off and cruise control did not deactivate when the brake pedal was depressed. brake light switch was replaced in 2010 due to malfunction with this new brake light switch, which also malfunctioned. hyundai claimed vehicle was not part of recall id# 78947 for service brakes, hydraulic:switches:brake light. however, again, brake light switch was replaced in 2010 with another malfunctioning brake light switch. *tr

While coming to a stop the car started to accelerate on it's own. i put more pressure on the brake, but would not hold, i put the car into neutral and turned off the key. when i restarted it was ok but my air bag light was on. when i got home i parked and pressed the key remote to lock, the doors locked but the lights did not flash. i then restarted the car, shut it of and relocked. this time the lights flashed but after about 30 sec. the car alarm would sound. i again restarted and shut it off, relocked and again the alarm. i then disconnected the battery and reconnected. everything seems to be working properly now and the air bag light also went out. *tr

Major problems with our 2007 hyundai santa fe including gas tank door latch needing to be replaced, car shaking uncontrollably, which the dealer diagnosed as a coil issue. the last problem led to the car being towed to the dealer. they are replacing the transmission due a failure of the car to accelerate and then lurch into gear, creating a very dangerous situation. *tr

Uncommanded transmission downshift at various speeds. downshifts occurs at unpredictable intervals and speeds, occasionally leaving a check engine light illuminated. the downshift events are instantaneous but, while startling, the vehicle is controllable. however, at highway speeds, speed loss can be as high as 20 mph, which has the potential for severe rear-end collisions, as well as, possible control issues. these event have occurred numerous times. dealer has been unable to correct the problem. *tr

I have a hyundai santa fe. i have had three major issues with the car and one small cosmetic issure. the major issues have been with the structure of the car, the wheel axel, the alignment, and the engine block. all of these items have either been loose, broken, or defective. yes, they keep fixing the car, but it's a new car. if i wanted a car that needed to be repaired weekly i would have kept or purchased an used car. i fear for my safety and the safety of my family riding in this car. we have been lucky so far that i have been able to catch these defects before we've gotten into a major accident. *tr
