My car is a 2006 hyundai sonata and last night my cars' headlights dim or shut off momentarily, the fan speed seems to drop for a second also but never shuts completely off. i noticed last night my tachometer would only go to a 1 at the lowest. it would go higher as i drove but never back down towards a 0 or 1. you could feel the harsh vibration as i sat at a stoplight while it rested at 1. i also noticed that it feels like the trans is slipping or something as i take off or try to turn. this is the first time i have ever experienced this with this car. this is extremely dangerous!! what if the gas pedal sticks or the lights go out while driving??? i have 2 small children and you bet i would sue or my family would on my behalf if anything happened to us as a result of hyundai not issuing some kind of recall. please address this issue asap as to avoid any future problems that could have been corrected by a simple recall.

When accelerating from a stop or slow turn, check engine and esc off light come on. the vehicle acts as if it is in neutral, with no gas power or brake control, but the car is running and all other electrical functions are working (windows, radio, etc). it shimmies and shakes. you have to coast to the side of the road and restart numerous times to get it to run properly. the check engine light remains on for several hours and then shuts off. this started about 6 months after i purchased the used car in 2006, and is intermittent but still has the problem. it will act up several times a day for months then nothing. this should be considered a safety issue, having to stop in single lanes with no shoulders, on railroad tracks, or intersections and restart numerous times to get it running again. took to merced ca hyundai they replaced tsp wiring, which did not help. of course it appeared ok as it takes time for the problem to repeat. have been unable to return to shop, with the inconvenience of having to take time off work, drive 30 miles to the dealer, and pay for car rental. i live in a rural area and bought a fairly new car to be reliable. this was not it. *tr

Good morning! i am having problems with my sonata and i need assistance and advise. my vehicle has broke down with me on 3 occasions with the same problem. i am concerned because my warranty will be running out at 60,000 miles and i am concerned about my safety. the belt that goes from the a/c to the motor and the alternator continues to fray and burn up in pieces. at this point the car is inoperable. i was told by the hyundai dealership that they have replaced these belts with chain belts on the new sonata's because of this problem. everytime i have had it repaired they told me that it would not happen again and it has happened (3) times. i contacted the hyundai company last thursday and no one has contacted me or made an attempt to talk with me. thank you for your assistance with this matter. marcia smith *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 hyundai sonata. while driving 20 mph, he heard a loud banging noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. the contact stated that the noise was louder while making a turn with a passenger seated in the rear. the dealer inspected the vehicle on two occasions; the first time they were unable to diagnose the failure and the second time the dealer adjusted the rear suspension. the suspension adjustment failed to solve the failure. as of october 9, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. the failure mileage was 12,000 and the current mileage was 16,997. the dealer stated the front right door lock inoperable, passenger seat area makes a rattling sound, right trunk trim vibrates when vehicle in motion and hears knocking sound in the engine. updated 10/23/07 *tr

My 2006 sonata v6 started sounding like a diesel when started after sittting for several hours. this clattering sound continues for 4-5 miles before subsiding. this starte when the car had approx. 25,000 mi. i have had it in two different dealers for a total of 6 times. they changed the timing belt tensioner a couple of times, changed an ac reed valve, and last time replaced the valve lifters, which they said were badly worn. none of these efforts fixed the problem. it continues to get worse. i am taking it in again this week for try #7.

This complaint applies to a 2007 hyundai sonata limited (no option for 2007 was available in drop down menu) (issue 1) at or around the initial few days after taking delivery i began to notice abrupt vibration and shaking coming from the steering wheel; substantial enough to feel in the seat. vehicle was taken back to dealership on 3 separate occasions to remedy the problem but they reported that they were unable to duplicate the problem and reported the vehicle to be in manufacturer specification. nonetheless, dealer attempted wheel balance and radial force balance as a good will gesture. problem is now more articulated and the issue remains unresolved. (issue 2) engine emits a rattle noise similar to lifter clatter upon start and continues throughout operation; particularly in colder weather. timing chain tensioner was replaced and one noise was resolved but the continual nature of the lifter clatter remains. dealership and hyundai representative reported that they were unable to duplicate the problem and the issue remains unresolved. (issue 3) fuel sloshing coming from the fuel tank. manufacturer and dealer claims this to be normal and not a safety risk. sound is more pronounced at or around 3/4 tank. brought this to the attention of the dealer and the manufacturer directly and remains unresolved. *nm

A fire started in the engine of my two-month-old 2006 hyundai sonata after it had been parked for approximately five hours. on the night that this happened, i had driven my sonata three hours from atlanta, ga to albany, ga and parked in my driveway at about 5:30pm. i subsequently ran a local errand and parked my car for the evening at 7:30pm. the car was parked about 2.5-3 feet behind my mother's 1994 chevrolet corsica. around 12:30 midnight, my next door neighbor was banging on my window, yelling, you have to get out of the house, your car is on fire! flames shot up 5-6 feet in the air and ignited the trunk of my mother's car. trees nearby were singed, and melted metal and rubber damaged the driveway. thanks to my neighbor's quick action, the flames did not reach the fuel tank of my mother's car or our house, thereby averting a real disaster. the fire department extinguished the fire and determined that the fire started in the engine. it became clear that the local service center, manufacturer and insurance company were not the parties responsible for conducting the investigation into the exact cause of the fire. wider consumer awareness of the nhtsa and the complaint-to-recall process will enhance safety by encouraging all parties to take appropriate action and responsibility. *nm
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - ENGINE - GASOLINE

I purchased a 2006 hyundai sonata in october 2005. the vehicle has developed a high pitched whine at 60-69 mph (2,000 rpm). i have taken the vehicle to my hyundai dealership and they have been informed by hyundai engineers that the noise comes from a design flaw dealing with the variable intake manifold. they are apparently aware of this matter but are doing nothing to rectify it. the noise is loud enough and high pitched enough that it could and does cause a driving distraction. *jb
