Defect SummaryHyundai is recalling 393,308 my 2006-2008 sonata vehicles equipped with an advanced air bag system which features an occupant classification system (ocs) in the right front seat. the purpose of the ocs is to disable the right passenger seat front air bag when it detects the presence of a child restraint system or small child in the right front seat. the right front air bag is disabled to prevent injuries to a child that may result from a right front air bag inflation during a crash.
Consequence SummaryMisclassification of a small stature adult as a child in the right front passenger seat may cause the right front air bag to not inflate in an accident that merits air bag deployment and may result in injury to the right front occupant.
Corrective SummaryDealers will verify that the ocs does not properly recognize a properly seated adult occupant. after verification, dealers will remove the right front seat cushion assembly and ship it to an evaluation and repair facility. this facility will evaluate and repair or reprogram the seat cushion and ocs as necessary. the recall is expected to begin on or about may 26, 2008. owners may contact hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

At about 5000 miles the drivers side air bag light came on. my wife took it to the dealership and was told that she would be responsible for the repair. ($1200.00).

The air bag light on my car started to come on all the time. also when no one was in the passenger seat, the seat belt light would continue to flash. research on this problem brought me to this recall: nhtsa campaign number: 08v161000. i contacted hyundai motor america and they said it was probably in the recall. as they directed, i took it to the dealer and they ran my vin to see if it was in the recall set but it was not. they also checked the air bag system and confirmed it was the issue dealt with on the recall but they would not cover the cost of the repair ($1,200) because it was not recalled. about that time i received a class action lawsuit dealing with calibrating the air bag system. this lawsuit only covers calibration and not repair which my car needs. as i communicated my concerns to hyundai motor america, they basically told me that because the car was out of warranty and because the class action lawsuit would only deal with calibration, it was my cost to repair. to me this issue is clearly in the area of defect in material from the manufacturer and not caused by my actions or neglect. and since hma repaired the recall vehicles with the same problem regardless of the warranty of the car, and mine was outside the vin set, i request that the recall be examined and expanded to include my vehicle and any others that have the very same issue but fell outside the scope of the original set. i find it hard to believe that hma would turn it's back on a clear safety issue that has been described and repaired in so many other similar cars, just because it falls outside of a technical scope of vin numbers.

We took the car in for a recall on the ocs and the dealer found two fault codes b1701 and b1706 indicating that both passenger and drivers side belt pretensioners resistance is too high.i see there are many 2006 and 2007 soantas with a similar issue. dealer wants a total of 871.74. with the number of repeated complaints i think there should be a safety recall.

We bought this vehicle brand new in 2007. with about 5000 miles the air bag light came on. we took it to the dealer and they could not find a problem and turned the light off. it came back on i think around 11,000 miles. same thing happened, the dealer said they could not find the problem & turned the light off. in october 2010 we took it in again with the air bag light on at 47,458 miles. the dealer repaired a passenger seat belt. in may 2011 with 58,640 miles the air bag light comes on again. this time they repair passenger seat cushion. the air bag light came on again in 2012 but we've been driving it this way for a while. the airbag light has been on more often than off it seems, and it always is some minor issue or can't be found. in feb 2013 with 87,725 miles i took the car to the dealer and now they say it is a driver's seat belt issue and is not covered under warranty. clearly hyundai is having major issues with the seat belts and the ocs system. something should be done about this.

The airbag light came on in my 2007 sonata. taking it to the dealer, they replaced the safety belt and then they said it was the cushion switch on the passenger's side. looking on the internet, there are quite a few claims of exactly the same thing that is wrong with my car. if this is true, how come, there is no recall to fix it. this item is for safety!!!! *tr

Air bag warning light went on and stayed on after horn was honked. air bag warning light is still on. how is it that this is not a long-term warranty item similar to seat belts? after a simple web search, it appears these senor type systems do not last for the short warranty period allowed. i don't have $300.00 to fix this.

Jun 28, 2011 - savannah, ga air bag light on june 1, 2011, i took the car to the dealship because the red air bag light came on. dealer diagnostics found that the occupancy sensor in passenger seat was defective. technician reset the bit fault for the light, but the hyundai service center that diagnosed the car informed me if it illuminated again, they were not allowed to reset it more than once and it will cost approximately $900 to replace the passenger seat sensor. if it is not replaced, the airbag system will not work. prior to the red light air bag light illuminating, the amber passenger air bag off light has illuminated sporatically over the past year or so, sometimes with the passenger seat occupied by an adult, sometimes without a passenger at all. this amber light has also mysteriously flashed on/off at times, again regardless if seat was occupied or not. research shows numerous amounts of 2007 sonatas with same problem. on june 25th, the red air bag light re-illuminated. at both times, the passenger seat was occupied (by an adult). the dealer informs me that nhsta campaign 08v161000 is not applicable to this vin, but the description of the recall summary sounds exactly like the problem demonstrated.

I had noticed that the passenger airbag off light in my 2007 hyundai sonata was sometimes coming on even when there was a passenger in the seat. we then received notice that there was a recall on this specific problem. we took our car to the dealer 11/3/08 and were advised that the passenger seat would be sent to california for repair. i picked up the car 11/9/08. because we later noticed that the problem continued, we returned the car to the dealer 6/16/09. they again advised us they would return the seat to california for repair. i picked up the car from the dealer 7/6/09. again the car light continued to indicate the passenger airbag was off when there was an adult passenger in the seat. one evening my husband and i drove the car to the dealer to show them that the airbag off light was on while i was seated in the passenger seat. the asst serv mgr was there and confirmed that the light was not functioning properly. on 9/23/09 i returned the car to the dealer and was met by the central region dist pts & svc mgr who discussed this issue with me. he suggested things to try (having the back of the seat in the straight up position, being sure to be seated in the center of the seat, sitting still for a few seconds after starting the car to be sure everything had engaged properly). he said we should let him know if none of this helped to alleviate the problem. none of these suggestions helped so we again contacted the cntrl rgn dist pts & svc mgr as instructed. after phone calls and discussions between him and my husband we have now been advised that nothing else will be done. our concerns are: how do we know whether the airbag will work if a crash should occur? we have been told the airbag itself is ok, but if that's true then why can't we get that in writing? if it's just the light that's defective, why won't someone fix it? what are the legal ramifications if a passenger should be injured in our car since we are unsure if the airbag will work or not? *tr

My husband notice the passenger airbag light was coming on and going off as we were going down the highway at around 20,000 miles. this happened many times for both my husband and myself. i brought the car into 2 different dealers and was told they can't duplicate the problem. since we didn't notice it happening until we were going down the highway for at least a half hour, i wasn't surprised that it didn't happen while test driving it at slower speeds in town. since it didn't happen for the dealers, and the abs light in the instrument panel didn't come on when it happened, there was nothing they could do. now that the vehicle is out of warranty at 66,000 miles, both the passenger abs light and the instrument light have come on and won't go out. i also noticed that the passenger seatbelt light was flashing when my husband had his seatbelt on and buckled. i am bringing it to the dealership to see if this will be fixed under warranty but am sure they will say it's not covered and will cost me. *tr

I received a recall notice for passenger side air bag activation defect on my hyundai sonata 2007. i was advised that if i have this defect i should contact local dealer and make an appointment to get it fixed. i called local hyundai dealer in burlington vermont and they gave my an appointment for dec. 31, 2008 at 8:00 am. i brought my car to dealer ship. i was told that they need the proof of i am having this problem of not activating the air bags. they need the person with me to show them that it does not work while person is in the car seat. i told them how come you did not tell me when i made the appointment also there is nothing mentioned about me proving it in the notice for recall. i was told that person with whom i made the appointment was not aware of the policy. i was told that it will take two weeks to fix the problem. i was told to bring the car back on monday jan. 5, 2009 and they will work on the car at that time. i told the dealership rep. that i can not keep taking time off from my work to get this safety problem fixed. the dealer rep. agreed to make arrangement to get the car to dealer ship from my home on monday jan. 5, 2009. my concern is many people will just live with defect instead of getting it fixed because of road block from the dealer ship. *tr

Since i purchased my 2007 sonata, the passenger airbag light will intermittently stayed illuminated when a small adult is in the front passenger seat. in the month of october i received the recall notice 08v161000 (airbags) and immediately called the dealer to schedule an appointment to have this fixed. when i arrived the service manager had another employee sit in the passenger seat. the light went off so they said nothing is wrong. when i got home, i called the hyundai customer assistance center and explained my situation. they informed me that the dealer should have told the this problem may happen when small adults are in the passenger seat and that they should have used a small adult to do their test. they proceeded to tell me that they can only fix the problem if the witness the light on and can hook it up to a computer to see if there is a problem. they said i would need to wait until it happened again, pull over, do not turn the car off, call roadside assistance, when roadside assistance got there tell them they need to tow the car with the engine running to the nearest hyundai dealer service department so they can check it out. on 11/23/2008 (sunday) the light stayed on when a small adult was in my passenger seat, when i called roadside assistance they could tow me to a hyundai dealer service department but since it was sunday they would be closed. every dealer i call says they cannot do anything for me because hyundai said they need to actually have the light on at the service department in order to send the seat in to be fixed. hyundai's recall process for the airbag issue is terrible and inconveniences the owner. can someone help me get this problem fixed? *tr

Regarding 2007 hyundai sonata. the passenger automatic air bag system doesn't work properly. hyundai calls this system occupant classification system, this system should turn off the passenger side air bag if the passenger is a child and weights less than 110 pounds (per hyundai hotline). my son is eight years old and 75 pounds in weight. when he sits in the front seat the advance air bag system turns off the air bag about 10% of the time. i went to the dealer for repairs they confirmed my concern but they had my son sit in a 2008 sonata and it did the same thing. they are saying that this is normal but they have contacted the hyundai rep. *tr

In the 2007 hyundai sonata there is an indicator light which lights up when the passenger airbag is disabled. according to the manual, this light is supposed to be off when a person is seated in the passenger seat, indicating that the airbag will deploy in the event of an accident. often, the light remains on, indicating the airbag is disabled, when a 130 lb adult is seated in the passenger seat. no amount of movement causes the light to turn off. i have spoken with both the local service desk and hyundai customer service. both have acknowledged that they are aware of the problem, and that the airbag will not deploy while the disabled light is lit. however, neither knows how to fix the problem or is willing to resolve this problem at this time. i am uncomfortable having a passenger in my vehicle with the faulty airbag sensor because the airbag may be disabled during an accident. *tr

My 2007 hyundai sonata passenger side airbag sensor does not properly activate the airbag when my girlfriend (5'6, 115 lbs) sits on the seat. turning on and off the car multiple times will usually make the sensor activate. in the last several months the airbag has been disarming while traveling (hitting bumps especially seems to make the airbag get disarmed). this makes me wonder what would happen to the airbag sensor if i needed to swerve and/or break in an attempt to avoid and accident, and ended up getting into the accident anyhow. it seems likely the passenger side airbag would deactivate under these conditions. furthermore, the sensor sensitivity appears to vary greatly from one 2007 sonata to another one. when my sonata was in the shop for maintenance, i rented another 2007 sonata (same model and same options), and the passenger side airbag sensed my girlfriend's presence just fine. hyundai has also been extremely uncooperative. after returning the car multiple times to the authorized dealer, and calling hyundai usa directly multiple times, i stopped receiving return calls. after threatening legal action via a demand letter, hyundai is at least talking to me again though they seem to have no capability to fix the problem. after doing some web searches, it is clear that many other folks are having similar problems with hyundai elantras and sonatas. *tr

2007 hyundai sonata. passenger airbag light stays on while my wife is sitting in front passenger seat. this means that the airbag is not activated & in the event of an accident the airbags will not deploy. we have had the front cushion replaced in nov 2007 but the problem have returned. this is an intermittent problem. we have photo's of the light on & passenger seat occupied. company so far is sending me to the dealer but unless the light is on while we are there they won't do anything. *tr
