By letter dated april 15, 2009, hyundai notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall number 09v122) to replace the stop lamp switches on many of its model year 2005-2008 vehicles.see recall 09v122 for a complete list. the agency opened its investigation based on five complaints of stop lamp failure across several 2007 hyundai models. the agency also received early warning (ewr) reports on this issue.most of those failures were traced to the improper operation of the stop lamp switch that controls stop lamp illumination.a malfunctioning stop lamp switch can cause the vehicle's brake lights not to light during braking, or alternatively, it can cause the brake lights to stay lit even when a driver takes the foot off the brake pedal. failure of the stop lamps to illuminate properly creates the hazard of rear end collisions when drivers following the subject vehicle do not recognize that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. hyundai reported one crash incident (a frontal impact), without injury, that was alleged to have been caused by this defect.the agency reviewed the incident and cannot conclude that it is related to this defect. there are other potential problems related to failure of the stop lamp switch: failure of the cruise control to disengage, interference with proper functioning of antilock brakes and electronic stability control, and inability to move the gear shift lever out of park position.based on the above safety recall, this investigation is closed.

My brake lights intermittently stop working. i have had the recall done for the brake relay switch. however my brake lights are unreliable since the problem started in aug of 2011. we have replaced the bulbs several times. my mechanic now is talking about replacing wiring and or wiring assemblies. there is still something wrong with the brake lights and hyundai needs to figure it out. in all the cars i have owned i have never had such a dangerous and ongoing problem. the dealer ship says tough. *tr

I have noticed an unusual percentage of hyundai sonatas with the high visiibility brakes lights that do not operate. i checked into having it repaired and the estimate was very expensive. i wondered if this was a manufacturing defect since access to the light is so difficult. i was curious if other compaints had been filed and if anything can be done.

Every time the brake pedal is pressed the car seems to power down. the headlights dim, dash lights dim, fan slows, and inside car lights dim. this happens everytime it's pressed. the lights seem to dim more if you are driving at a faster pase and press harder on the brakes verse driving slowly and easing onto the brake pedal. the battery has been replaced and checked over several times for any sort of defect. also the alternator has been replaced recently and checked over for any defects. these were replaced because they were thought to be the problem but the problem still occurs everyday everytime the brake pedal is pressed.

I have a 2007 hyundai sonata, i have had trouble with darkness in front of the left side head light. i contacted hyundai and they stated there isn't any problem. i referred to your campaign #08e021000. hyundai stated my car was not involved. i explained that i felt it was a major safety issue but they refused to resolve the issue. my daughter has a 2007 kia with the same problem and she is unable to get help with their problem also. i understand these cars use the same headlight configuration. thank you. *tr

The headlights on 2007 sonata has gone out 4 times and has been changed by the dealer and this has become a problem also the rear lights it has become costly to me in a couple of ways missing work and also getting pulled over by the police unaware of the lights out which can lead to an accident and tickets and etc. something needs to be done. *tr

Noticed lower brake lights were not working but the center brake light in the window works properly. checked all fuses and they are fine. replaced fuses anyways and still no resolution. replaced brake light switch under dash by brake pedal and still did not correct problem. i think there is a relay that may be bad, but have received no explanation from several automotive experts. all of the brake light bulbs (4 of them) are fine and it would be surprising if all 4 went bad at the same time. all other lights operate properly including taillights, turn signals and reverse lights. *tr

The headlights have always been a problem as far as visibility is concerned. the low beams do not light up distance because of the way it is made. there is bar that cuts the light beam off at the top. when taken back to the dealer they simply adjusted the headlights which was worse because in the fog the lights were now aimed straight out decreasing visibility and making it dangerous. *tr

I smelled smoke when commuting to work. i found a small hole was burnt through the fabric covering the shelf under the rear window. it was caused by the light bulb in the light in the rear window that goes on when you step on the brake. the light gets so hot that it burnt through. i haven't had it fixed yet. *tr

2007 hyundai sonata. consumer requests reimbursement for replacement brake lights. consumer expressed a discontent in regards to the cost of the lights themselves and the labor charge for replacement. *tgw the consumer stated the dealer replaced the stop lamp switch under recall. however, she believed the reason the brake lights burned out was due to the malfunctioning stop lamp. *jb

On june 2, 2008 the esc (electronic stability control) light on the dash indicated the esc was not engaged. it went off after i stopped the car and restarted. the light came on 2 more times in the next 4 days. on june 6, i was making a y turn on a residential street and the shift would not move out of drive. having read the owner's manual previously, i popped the button on top of the shift console and pushed the button with my knife. i was able to get into reverse, but the shift locked down again keeping me from going into drive. i had to push the button. i brought the car to my dealer on june 16. the brake light switch was faulty and sticking causing the problem. since i have only 8,456 miles on the car, warranty covered the repair. *tr

The brake light switch on my 2007 hyundai sonata (v6 - limited - auto transmission) has failed twice in less than one year. both times, failure began with automatic deactivation of the electronic stability control system (as indicated by a light in the instrument panel), followed several days later by failure of the transmission interlock system which makes it impossible to shift the car to/from drive to reverse (or park). when this failure occurred on friday, may 9, 2008, i was pulling into a parking lot but suddenly needed to reverse my direction to avoid being hit by another vehicle that did not yield the right of way. with no warning, i suddenly found that the shift lever would not move into reverse because the shift interlock (controlled by the defective brake switch) would not allow the lever to move. i was stuck in traffic for several minutes and was nearly hit by a truck because i could not move the vehicle! luckily, i remembered how to remove the small cover over the manual disengagement point and was able to use a leatherman tool to deactivate the shift lock system and place the car in reverse. this could have been a tragic situation if i had been hit by the truck or if this had happened near a railroad crossing or as i was boarding a ferry boat on puget sound. this is not an isolated problem with hyundai automobiles as i found by researching the issue on the web. this is a serious problem that needs to be fixed once and for all! the dealer replaced the switch under warranty, but this will do little good if i am killed or seriously injured the next time failure occurs. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 hyundai sonata. the headlights are not projecting a sufficient amount of light onto the road at night. the failure occurs at any speed. the vehicle has been taken to the dealer on three occasions. the first time, the dealer attempted to raise the headlights, but this did not correct the failure. instead, it only blinded oncoming drivers in the opposite lanes. the second time, the dealer switched the headlights with another vehicle of the same year, make, and model, however, the failure recurred. the third time, the dealer wanted to raise the headlights again, but the contact refused. he called the district office in new jersey and was informed that nothing could be done. the failure mileage was 782 and current mileage was 3,800. *updated 12/12/07 *bf

Tl*- the contact stated that when approaching a hill while driving the 2007 hyundai sonata he was unable to see further than 2 car lengths ahead. when driving in country settings using the low beams where there were no street lights he had the most difficulty. when driving on a level street with lights on everything was normal. the road conditions varied, and contact had the problem no matter what the road conditions were present. the vehicle was taken to the dealer a couple of weeks after it was purchased at 670 miles, and they were able to adjust the headlights low beam to the state requirements. the contact claimed this didn't solve the problem. the vehicle currently had 2, 200 miles. *ak updated 03/19/07. *jb
