By letter dated april 15, 2009, hyundai notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall number 09v122) to replace the stop lamp switches on many of its model year 2005-2008 vehicles.see recall 09v122 for a complete list. the agency opened its investigation based on five complaints of stop lamp failure across several 2007 hyundai models. the agency also received early warning (ewr) reports on this issue.most of those failures were traced to the improper operation of the stop lamp switch that controls stop lamp illumination.a malfunctioning stop lamp switch can cause the vehicle's brake lights not to light during braking, or alternatively, it can cause the brake lights to stay lit even when a driver takes the foot off the brake pedal. failure of the stop lamps to illuminate properly creates the hazard of rear end collisions when drivers following the subject vehicle do not recognize that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. hyundai reported one crash incident (a frontal impact), without injury, that was alleged to have been caused by this defect.the agency reviewed the incident and cannot conclude that it is related to this defect. there are other potential problems related to failure of the stop lamp switch: failure of the cruise control to disengage, interference with proper functioning of antilock brakes and electronic stability control, and inability to move the gear shift lever out of park position.based on the above safety recall, this investigation is closed.

I usually keep my car in the garage and out of the weather. i recall last year my daughter said my car stalled out when she was driving. i told her water may have just splashed under the engine or something. i just had the same issue. we had a rain storm last night. i went out and started my car. i came out to leave and my car was off. i tried to start it again but it didnt want to turn over. finally after 7 tries the car started. i backed out and it just sputtered and the car just cut out twice. i just had new sparkplugs and spark plug wires put in so it has to be something in the electric to the motor. i dont trust having my grandson in the car. i have read horrible stories about the same thing happening to other owners with the same issue. i borrowed my boyfreinds car so i could get to work. hoping maybe someone knows if there is a recall on this issue.

Aug 2010 -- driving on interstate in extremely heavy traffic and engine stalled, losing power steering, brakes, and gas exceleration . limped to exit, barely avoiding being rear-ended by 18-wheeler and barely got off freeway before engine died. had to wait apprx 1 hour before engine would start again. drove very slow and cautiously next 400 miles home with no further problem. july 2011 -- driving in city, turned corner and engine stalled exactly as in 2010 incident described above. was able to pull into a parking lot before being rear-ended by another vehicle. only had to wait apprx 15 minutes for engine to start again this time. made it rest of way home without further incident. for past 3 years, esp light comes on randomly while driving down highway and won't go out. sometimes pulling over, killing engine, then restarting makes the light go out, and sometimes it doesn't.
