VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - CRUISE CONTROL
PE09003HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY01/14/200904/24/2009STOP LAMP SWITCH FAILURE09V122000
By letter dated april 15, 2009, hyundai notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall number 09v122) to replace the stop lamp switches on many of its model year 2005-2008 vehicles.see recall 09v122 for a complete list. the agency opened its investigation based on five complaints of stop lamp failure across several 2007 hyundai models. the agency also received early warning (ewr) reports on this issue.most of those failures were traced to the improper operation of the stop lamp switch that controls stop lamp illumination.a malfunctioning stop lamp switch can cause the vehicle's brake lights not to light during braking, or alternatively, it can cause the brake lights to stay lit even when a driver takes the foot off the brake pedal. failure of the stop lamps to illuminate properly creates the hazard of rear end collisions when drivers following the subject vehicle do not recognize that the vehicle is slowing or stopping. hyundai reported one crash incident (a frontal impact), without injury, that was alleged to have been caused by this defect.the agency reviewed the incident and cannot conclude that it is related to this defect. there are other potential problems related to failure of the stop lamp switch: failure of the cruise control to disengage, interference with proper functioning of antilock brakes and electronic stability control, and inability to move the gear shift lever out of park position.based on the above safety recall, this investigation is closed.

Unexpected acceleration of engine when at complete stop (at stop sign) and foot had been on brake for at least 30 seconds. shift was in drive, engine went full speed, all wheels spun on ground, creating much smoke. foot remained on brake. note that accelerator pedal when not engaged is below level of brake pedal when it is engaged and that when accelerator pedal is full down then its level is 3 inches below the brake pedal level when it is engaged. right foot was on brake - thus no way for operator error since if foot had been off brake the vehicle would have shot forward into intersection and there would have been a multiple car accident. and there is no way to have right foot on brake and to have accelerator full down at the same time. shifted to neutral, engine continued to race, some noise when shifted - may have harmed transmission. turned off ignition switch and engine stopped. vehicle started normally after this. ac was on. car had full dealer service at 45,661 miles and state inspection a week before this incident. at 45755 miles, tech confirmed ses light; found code p0150 oxygen sensor- not replaced, software updated for engine control module.

1/6/09 while driving the tuscon began to feel hesitant with slow acceleration and stalled while i was turning across traffic and malfunction light came on. tow was required to the dealer where the tps sensor assembly was replaced. mileage was 50209. i purchased my tuscon new in 9/2005 and since 12/05 i had the car in the dealer for malfunction light six times. on 4/26/2009 while traveling on the nj turnpike the tuscan began to operate in the same manner as in 1/09 , and thankfully, i was able to pull over to the shoulder before the tuscon stalled and caused a major accident. i was towed to a hotel, and the next day towed again to a nj dealer where the sensor assy-air flow and sensor assy oxygen lh were replaced. mileage 53401. i drove 150 miles to home, and the malfunction light came on again. i took the car to my regular dealer said the code was found for cylinder # 5 misfire, e ngire not misfiring at this time . i contacted the hyundai consumer assistance center and reported all of the above to them (three calls were made) i was told i would hear back from them last night, but have not. i travel on high speed/traffic roadways often and now i am concerned for the safety of my passengers, drivers/passengers in other cars and my own. i am i to know if the car is going to stall again, and if i am aware of a change in it's operation how i can feel safe not knowing if i will be able to pull to the shoulder before this happens. *tr
