ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - WIRING
05/04/200538000201/02/2003
The air bag light stayed on after starting the car - all else seemed ok. i called the dealer and he said it was not important that a connector had probably just come loose and that the air bag would probably still work if needed. when i took it to the dealer he removed the driver's side seat and said he found a broken wire and repaired it - at a cost of about $56 - for a car that has a bumper-to-bumper warranty. it was suggested that we must have put something under the seat that caused the wire to break when the seat was moved - this seat automatically moves every time the car is started and stopped. about six months later the same thing happened again. this time it was the passenger's seat that had a broken wire under it. this seat is moved less frequently, but it is a power seat. as far as i know the only thing under that seat was a box of tissues. again i was required to pay for the repair. i believe this to be a design defect in that anything that is allowed to get under the seat will cause this wire to be severed and prevent the side air bags from deploying. i have never had a car that had any problem with items under the seat. also this design has a sort of pan or depression under each seat that traps any loose article left on the floor when the car is stopped and it slides under the seat. it never slides back out when accelerating. this seems to just make the problem worse. i do not believe that any normal item left on the floor of the car should cause this damage and debilitate the air bag system. *jb
