Defect SummaryOn certain passenger vehicles, the circuit board for the crank position sensor or cam position sensor may have an improper solder joint due to solder deformation caused by heat stress accelerated by the existence of flux residue during the soldering process.
Consequence SummaryThis could cause the service engine soon warning light to come on, create a no start condition, cause reduced engine power, or cause the engine to stop running without warning during vehicle operation, which could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the crank position sensors. camshaft position sensor(s), and in some cases, the variable timing control sensor(s). vehicles involved in a previous recall campaign, 01v357, are also included in this new campaign. the replacement sensors used in that campaign are also affected. owner notification began on december 22, 2003. owners should contact nissan at 1-800-647-7261 or infiniti at 1-800-662-6200.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

Pulled into a parking lot when the engine stopped running all of a sudden. the power steering also went out. everything else including the electrical seemed to still work. service engine soon, slip and vdc off lights displayed on the dashboard immediately. this seems to be related to nhtsa campaign id # 03v455000. i called the manufacturer who informed me my vin was not within the range of this recall. searching online reveals other owners whose vins are not within the range also have had this issue. it seems to me this recall should be re-investigated and reevaluated as this is a serious danger to the public (imagine this happening on a freeway which has happened to other owners). *tr

Engine became inoperable while driving causing a major safety issue. several warning lights came on simultaneously (check engine light, slip light, vdc light) at the time. car was able to be restarted with some trouble. problem repeated itself (stalling, loss of power, starting difficulty) over next couple days, although warning lights never went off. independent mechanic identified problem as cam position sensor failures & advised there was a nhtsa safety recall (nhtsa campaign id 03v455000) for the problem with 2003 g35s, but that my vin was outside the campaign recall vins. he suggested i contacted infiniti. i contacted both dealer and infiniti national customer service who acknowledged there was a cam position sensor problem with 2003 g35s, but because my vin was not in the campaign they refused to do anything to address the safety issue. i had the dealer replace the cam position sensors at my expense (about $1500). there are a number of similar complaints filed with the nhtsa about this problem with no apparent resolution with infiniti. the recall campaign 03v455000 needs to be extended to cover all problem vehicles. *tr

The car is a 2003 infiniti g35. my wife was crossing an intersection when the car just stopped. traffic coming the other way had to also stop to avoid an accident. she was able to start the car and get it going again, only for it to stopp running one more time before getting home. i pulled the diagnostic codes from the car. it failed with a p0345 cranksahft position sensor a circuit bank 2. this sensor had a voluntary replacement from infiniti on the same year model car, except our vin number falls just outside of the range. i truly believe that should be expanded, as this can cause a fatal accident should it fail at the wrong time. the car dies, which means you lose the power stering and brakes. i will replace the sensors as the dealer i spoke with would not cover it under the volumtary replacement due to the vin not being covered. there are 4 of these sensors on this car so there is a potential for failure. please look into getting the recall for this part expanded to cover all cars. there is too much at stake to not do that.
