-set of duals came off due to axle nut coming loose- 2007 international 5900 dump truck with mileage 109,521 on june 26, 2009 while traveling down a county highway the truck acted as if it slipped out of gear when he could not get the truck to drive again he was beginning to pull over when he noticed the duals were sliding out from under the truck on the left front drive axle. packer city international a local dealer in was called and they sent a service truck out and also had to call a tow truck for assistance to get the truck back for repairs. the truck was brought back to the service center and once inspected and repaired it was determined that it was a failure on behalf of the axle wheel nut (meritor). this unit is a 2007 with only 109,521 miles and has never been worked on other than at the dealer we feel it should be a warranty issue and have disputed the charges however international has rejected it as a warranty issue. we have in our possession the axel nut from the unit and it is very apparent that there was never a locking clip or pin on one side there is no evidence of any weld or markings that clearly should have been visible on the nut. the axles on this unit are meritor; axles of this type have meritor part #s 227,228,229 and 230. this could have caused injury to not only the driver of this unit and also to all other motorist on the highway that day, even worst yet it could have been a fatal situation. we are not only concerned on the safety issues that could occur should there be future failures such as the one we have experienced but also with the expenses that should not be our responsibility due to their faulty parts. it is in our opinion that meritor and international should investigate such parts for the safety of all, also we are suggesting that such models with the part numbers listed above be updated to a double nut system. *tr
