Defect SummaryOn certain sport utility vehicles that are equipped with an anti-lock braking system (abs), the vehicles can experience extended stopping distances in certain types of braking events.
Consequence SummaryExtended stopping distance could result, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will provide a replacement computer algorithm for the abs that is based on the algorithm used in isuzu's my 2000 and 2001 vehicles, which have not had the problem. this campaign will be conducted in phases, with the my 1998 2wd vehicles covered first, since they have experienced the most problems. owner notification began march 20, 2003. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact isuzu at 1-800-643-4070.
NotesCustomers can also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

In december 2002, i had the abs module replaced due to the unit 'being fried' according to the mechanic. one year later, the abs warning light illuminated and there is sporatic braking slippage especially braking down hill. unfortunately, the dealer indicated that there is a $100 diagnostic test that needs to be done to identify the problem before looking at anything. after diagnostic test, the dealer states there is a problem with the rear sensor (another $160 to fix). the 99 isuzu rodeo only has 40,000 miles at this point and has two problems with the abs system. the dealer did a vin search and my car was not part of the recall.

We checked the brakes checked many times, we felt that the braking distances were extended compared to the other 2 cars that we own. every time the brake pads were checked they were determined to be okay. the anti-lock brakes seem to grab on bumpy or slippery surfaces and then let go at the end. this particular instance resulted in an automobile accident with injury and significant damage to 2 cars.*ak

I was driviing down a freeway offramp and when i applied the brakes, they failed. i pumped the brakes and all the happened was that they made a bouncing noise but did not engage. i had to swerve to avoid the car in front of me where i then got hit and pushed into a guardrail.*ak

Abs failure design problem. extended braking distance especially on wet or bumpy surfaces. the abs system seems to disengage any significant braking effect. this has not caused an accident yet, but when it happens intermittently, nothing appears to help the brakes engage in a normal fashion. the manufacturer does not acknowledge a design problem despite numerous other complaints by other owners and a recall on 1998 vehicles that they will not apply to my 1999 model. this is not a matter that can be resolved by the manufacturer or their dealer without outside intervention. the problem is serious and is endangering my family. the stopping distance is drastically increased with this system. i would feel much safer if the system could be permanently disengaged, so i could stop in an emergency. dt

I have had problems with the brakes on my isuzu rodeo about 5 times since may 1999. the problem occurs, if i am applying the brakes and the car goes over any bumpy surface (railroad crossing, bump in the road, uneven road surface, etc..). when this happens the brakes seem to release very much and it is very difficult to stop. i contacted the manufacturer about the problem and they indicated that they were aware of the problem, but that these abs brakes were designed this way, and they meet all federal standards. i know i was getting the company line, but i could feel that the person speaking with me agreed that this is a potential problem. he basically told me, that these abs brakes do release and the rate at which the car decelerates is reduced somewhat but it still falls within the federal mandates. the fact that your deceleration rate is not constant is where i see the problem. you cannot judge your braking capabilities, because if for some reason you hit a bump in the road while stopping, it may take you twice as long to stop. i do not want my kids riding in this car because i am afraid that we may get into an accident. any consideration to this problem would be appreciated.

As i pulled into a parking spot at an elementary school, the brakes failed, the throttle engaged, and i crashed into a wall. luckily, i was only going about 1 mph, but damage was done to the hood, pass. side fender, grill, and radiator. this was the second time this has happened.

While downshifting to 3rd gear to make a left hand turn on to montana ave. from loop 375 my brake pedal depressed to the floor and i had no brakes. i also heard a noise coming from under the front of the hood. when i pressed the brake pedal again the brakes engaged. this, however, did not take place until i was in the center of the intersection. the vehicle was taken to the service department where i purchased the vehicle. they reported that no problem was found.

To start with, i have had continous problems with the brakes, which squeal loudly when coming to a stop, they moan & creek on the inside then forcefully pushes my foot off the pedal-- the headlights have been a real problem. i've had to replace these headlights 4 times now, 2 of which were done myself. i cannot go the speed limit on the freeways, barely even up to it, as the vehicle shakes & vibrates so violently, it feels like its being pulled apart in every direction, taking me with it. i can only get to about 46 mph before the shaking & vibrations start in. the steering wheel i have to grip tightly with both hands just to stay on the road, it shakes so much. the vehicle pulls to the right if i have to take my hands off the wheel even for a second. the driver side window & door panel rattles when the window is rolled down at any length, i can physically move the window. there is a continued buzzing on the driver's side speaker when the radio is on, even turning off the bass doesn't help. it's not on the passenger side. i don't feel safe driving this vehicle. the dealer charged me $1300 for an extended 'warranty' at a $100 deductible, but has refused to service the vehicle. i have never received the smog certificate, but was charged for the smog. the dealer who sold this piece of junk to me has completely wiped his hands of it as soon as it was dropped off on his lot. said he wasn't 'responsible' for anything this vehicle needed. i'm out several hundred dollars on this vehicle. i wasn't looking to get a vehicle that needed so much work done to it right from the start. it has been & continues to be a living nightmare! i have contacted several agencies, only to have them shut there door in my face, because this is a used vehicle. my hands are literally up in the air, i don't know what to do anymore-- what is my legal recourse?? *ak

As i was attempting to merge onto a highway exit ramp, i applied the brakes with what was typical force for such conditions. the road was wet and as i was braking, the vehicle went over an expansion joint in the overpass of the road. the brake pedal went to the floor, the wheels locked up, and the vehicle skidded, using excessive braking distance, thus resulting in a low-speed rear-end accident with the vehicle in front of me. little damage was done to the other vehicle; however, the front bumper of my vehicle, a 1999 isuzu rodeo was pushed back. i now find out that isuzu has issued a safety recall for the abs, which is responsible for this accident and the resulting damage to my vehicle. the damage has never been repaired. i would like isuzu, as a part of its recall campaign to repair the damage to the front bumper, free of charge.

I have a 99 isuzu rodeo with about 37,500 miles. about 2 weeks ago (early january 2003), i started up the rodeo and heard a very loud sound coming from under the hood, which continued even when i turned off the ignition and removed the keys. the only way to stop the sound was to unplug the abs fuse. when i took it to the dealership, they said the abs control module had to be replaced (about a $500 repair.) from my internet research, this is a frequent problem with mid- to late-90s rodeos.

We have a 1999 isuzu rodeo my daughter was driving at about 25 mph during the rain when she gently applied the brakes, she heard a noise the rodeo began sliding causing an impact which resulted in an accident. various other times we would be driving and especially during wet road conditions the brakes made a noise causing the tires to rotate prematurely in an uncontrollable sliding motion.in 2011 we took our rodeo in on recall no. 10v-436, (excessive corrosion may result in the left or right rear suspension lower link bracket becoming detached from the frame, which can affect vehicle handling and potentially cause a crash.) the dealership performed the inspection which was determined that the recall should not be performed. due to excessive corrosion the reinforcement bracket remedy would not be appropriate. in order to perform this recall the body is detached from the frame and if corrosion is present on the frame this recall would only cause further damages weakening the frame making it unsafe to operate the vehicle. the frames should be recalled also! the frames also have excessive corrosion and also once a frame is compromised it's weakened! by doing this recall it dimishes the integrity of the frame anyway. therefore, this recall is not a resolution to the problems it's a bigger safety issue and puts many consumers at risk! as for isuzu providing the consumers with an appropriate remedy... this is not happening!

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 isuzu rodeo. while braking and attempting to stop the vehicle, acceleration occurs and the vehicle makes a grinding noise at the same time. the failure has been occurring for months. a new abs was installed, but the grinding noise persists. the contact called the isuzu manufacturer and was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnostic. the dealer suggested that the brake booster may have a hole in it and needed to be changed; however, this was not the case. the dealer stated that they could not remedy the failure. the failure mileage was 40,000 and current mileage was 100,000.

I recently was involved in an accident that i could not avoid. 2 weeks prior to the accident i received a recall in the mail for my abs module and brake system. although my abs light was already on i assumed the recall was why. i took it in, they supposedly fixed it. i guess i was wrong. i drove up and told the gentleman that my abs light was still on, and i asked why he said that that wasn't part of the recall. my question is how can it not be part of the recall when it's part of the module. so i left it and decided to take it back when i can get the money to cover my co-pay. the i get in the accident, keep in mind that they just fixed my abs system and brakes. it had rained and i tried to stop to keep from hitting someone. it didn't work, i've had vehicles with abs before, so i know what they are suppose to do, and that didn't happen. i just slid and i mean slid into this guy. if the isuzu place where i took my vehicle to get fixed would have been fixed right the first time, i could have avoided this whole situation. but instead i got this whole story about hooking it up to a diagnostic machine &there could have been 30-40 different things wrong with it, and that would cost me $180.00. but instead i took it for granted that they fixed the recall defect. that's only my first complaint, i have had numerous problems with my gas in this vehicle. i took it in 2-4 times to get it fixed and all they do is a visual inspection, and tell me nothing is wrong. there is when i use 1/4 tank of gas going 12 miles.

Abs instrument warning light is lit and the abs system is not working. no pulsing during braking action and i believe that the vehicle is not stopping as quickly or with the same ability to control the vehicle that i had when the abs system was working. soft pedal has been encountered twice but not at any other time. there was a dot recall that i had the isuzu dealer correct on 5-5-2003. they corrected the problem under the abs recall, campaign number 021002000 dated 2002-jun-03 with 47228 miles on the odometer. the problem seems to have returned, but braking is sporadic and intermittent. the warning light will occasionally go out but comes back on while driving. i have had the brakes inspected, all four brakes replaced, and new brake fluid installed all within the last two weeks. nothing has changed with the vehicles braking behavior or the warning light being lit. i have contacted american isuzu motors inc. by phone on 6-27-06 and was told that they do not have any responsibility for the abs problem since they did address and correct the problem on this vehicle on 5-5-2003. i think that the abs problem is still an isuzu ongoing problem especially after reading about this problem from other owners in various internet chat rooms as well as my own experience while driving the vehicle. *jb

We had a serious safety event with a 1999 isuzu rodeo. i was trying to drive the vehicle up service ramps to change the oil. to go up the ramp, i pressed the brake with my left foot while giving a little gas with the right. this is the same technique i have been using, on the same ramps for at least 15 years, with several other vehicles. (two other vehicles i routinely service also have abs braking systems). on this occasion, the vehicle shot forward. as best as i can determine, the front brakes locked up while the back wheels did not. i got the abs effect on the pedal, while the vehicle shot forward, collapsing the ramps and sliding on them 20 feet before i could get the vehicle to stop. the actions i performed are exactly the same as i would use trying to position the vehicle while going up a steep hill. i am a at a loss to understand exactly what happened except that pressing the brake harder did not work. i was not able to stop the vehicle until i took the transmission out of gear. apparently, once the front wheels stopped turning, while the rear were rolling, the abs system prevented the brakes from stopping the rear wheels. (when the transmission shifted to neutral, the forward drive stopped, but the engine did not race indicating that i was not pressing the accelerator). fortunately, there was no car coming down the street, and i was able to get it to stop before we hit the car across the street. *la

Isuzu rodeo campaign notice 02i-002. this is a safety improvement campaign dealing with abs, coil integrated module replacement. the explanation is that when applying brakes on a bumpy road surface or when one side of the road is more slippery than the other, you may encounter extended stopping distances. this could lead to a crash. in my case, this led to a minor crash with another vehicle which resulted in minor damage to the front bumper of my isuzu rodeo vehicle. i received this campaign notice after the incident. when i contacted isuzu to request reimbursement for the damage i received i was told that they would not be held liable since this is only an safety improvement campaign and not a safety recall. this seems contradictory to what is implied and i would like to file a complaint against isuzu in their handling of this matter and to document that this is a potentially hazardous defect.

Multiple occurrences of brake/abs malfunction when applying brakes, with the vehicle in motion at relatively low speeds - approx less than 20 mph. in each occurrence the brake pedal strongly resists foot pressure, braking action is minimal-to-nonexistent, and the abs unit emits a groaning/grinding sound from vicinity of the engine compartment. in these situations there is a high risk of collision with stationary vehicles ahead in traffic. as greater pressure is applied to the brake pedal in an attempt to stop the vehicle, in some instances the faulty abs action abruptly ends - causing the vehicle to jerk to a sudden stop. this behavior risks causing a collision by closely following vehicles. after each of these malfunctions, the abs light on the console appears and there are no further malfunctions during that particular trip. driver has removed the abs fuse to prevent the problem from re- occurring. *nlm

When car was first purchased, brakes would occasionally stick restricting car to 35 mph on highway. dealer suggested letting brakes wear in. problem continued off and on for about 3-4 months, we learned to pull the brake pedal up to release when stuck. in march of 2002 the abs light came on, took to dealer and they said it was just a shorted wire and fixed it. on 7/10/02 wife applied brakes while entering on ramp to highway, car went into a 540 deg spin, no accident occured. the next morning, abs light came on and abs unit continually made noise even when key was removed from ignition. dealer was called i told them my wifes rodeo is making a running noise like a fan with the key out of ignition dealer (sandy in svc)said instantly oh, thats the abs unit, i usually recommend pulling the abs fuse or it may drain the battery. the next day i called to talk to svc mgr (john michael), i said wifes rodeo was making a noise, like a fan running, without key in ignition john quickly interjected and the abs light was on. it seems that this is a common problem that isuzu seems to be ignoring at the cost of consumers, possibly the cost of someones safety. we will be responsible for the $250-$500 repair bill (3 months out of warranty). i did some research and it appears numerous reports have been filed on rodeos abs failures.*ak

My son was driving my 1999 isuzu rodeo home from school. he was at a red light, stopped to take a right turn and car accelerated on its own went out of control. he tried to get it under control but it wouldn't stop; it just kept going, he went onto the other lane and collided with another driver head on. fortunately, nobody was hurt. this is the 3rd time the car has revved up and went on its own. the first time it happened to me i thought it was because it wasn't warmed up but it has happened 3 times. i called isuzu and they said they never heard of any complaint like this although i have spoken with other people who have these cars and they said the same think happened to them. i have reported it to the insurance company. i also called another isuzu dealer and he said he has heard of this happening, i think this really needs to be addressed.*ak

Brakes failure occurs when braking while going over any type of bump such as any small bump in the road, speed bump, road drainage grate, etc.. at slow speeds (10-25 mph). this problem also occurs on wet roads. this has caused my vehicle to lurch forward into an intersection and narrowly miss rear-ending vehicles in front of me. when this issue occurs, the abs takes over causing loss of brakes for 1-3 seconds and the vehicle continues to lurch forward. i'm afraid that this will result in an auto accident one of these days.*ak

Related complaint of abs failure was filed earlier today. honda dealership service manager admitted that several passport owners (identical to rodeo) had requested that antilock brakes be disabled because driver did not like performance. ford motor company salesperson indicated that isuzu rodeo has 2 channel antilock brake system whereas gm and ford use 4 channel antilock. 2 channel is definitely inferior and possibly dangerous because it disables brakes on two sets of wheels during pulsing process whereas 4 channel only pulses individual wheel. isuzu dealership refused to comment and acted ignorant of details as to operation of antilock brakes. complained to isuzu's national customer support center and have had no response. have seen a tremendous number of complaints in nhtsa's files about isuzu rodeo's abs brakes. my last car was a gmc jimmy and i drove it for 13 years and 240,000 miles. gmc's antilock brakes are much better than isuzu's. isuzu's seem susceptible to engage at low speed especially on wet or bumpy surfaces. requesting a telephone interview... please!!! *ak

Repeated occurrences of antilock braking system taking over control of brakes while braking at low speed. problem is most pronounced when roads are wet or when traveling over bumpy surface with moderate brake pressure applied. first occurrence was two months after vehicle was purchased while driving on wet roads. vehicle approached intersection with railroad crossing. moderate braking pressure caused antilock brakes to take over just as vehicle was bumping over railroad tracks. vehicle was unable to stop. luckily, no other vehicle was at intersection at the time. vehicle ended up completely inside intersection. driver backed up to behind painted lines and was very startled as to action of braking system. problem occurred again on wet road at smooth intersection. assumed oil on roadway was cause of antilock brake engagement and driver reported inability to stop vehicle for unusually long period at low speed. third incident was while pulling trailer with 2000 lb load. while pulling up to residence, right front tire rolled into gutter with water. antilock brakes activated and vehicle slid forward approximately 10 feet. vehicle was only traveling about 5mph. last occurrance involved wet pavement and resulted in antilock brakes engaging at low vehicle speed (approximately 20 mph) while slowing for intersection. vehicle was unable to stop. driver tried to avoid accident by changing lane to right but was struck by vehicle on right and was pushed back into original lane. collision occurred at approximately 10 mph. vehicle was immediately brought to isuzu dealership for brake check. dealer reported tires inflated to 33 lbs instead of 26/28 according to rating on door. tires rated at 35 lbs max. dealer acted unaware of any reports of antilock brake problems with other customers, i.e. acted stupid especially when told that brake failure resulted in accident. can duplicate failure repeatedly. request telephone conversation. *ak

Everytime the brake is applied and the vehicle hits a bump, the abs disengages the brake and waits for 1-2 seconds before engages the brake again. this converts to quite a bit of lost braking distance. as drivers, we cannot keep monitoring the surface of the road when applying the brakes. during that 1-2 second window, there is always a sound similar to someone dropping a basketball to a concrete floor from about knee level. as the ball bounces back, it does not travel as high as before; therefore, the frequency of the sound becomes faster until it stops. by the time the sound stops, the brake engages again. i think there is faulty brake mechanism that causes this sound and the abs failure. i have spoken to the service manager of isuzu and he mentioned that that is the way abs works. please advise.

Thursday, april 3, 2003 my 1999 isuzu rodeo began making unusual sounds from inside the hood and the abs light lit up on the dashboard. upon looking under the hood, i discovered the brake module was running despite turning the car off and removing the key. the only way to stop the module from running was to remove the negative cable from the battery. i immediately called the crest isuzu dealership in plano, texas and spoke the service department about the problem. the technician's first response was that i may qualify for a free replacement because there was a manufacturer's installation problem on some of the rodeos coming from certain plants. i gave him my vin number and he came back and told me my vin number was not on the list. i found it odd that isuzu would recognize that some parts were defective, but not respond to mine. my next step was to contact the owner relations department of american isuzu motors, inc. i initially spoke with don who informed me that in july, isuzu was launching a campaign to replace all brake modules in 1999 isuzu rodeos. i was told this was a safety upgrade and did not mean that the part had any problems. i was told that i would have to pay for the replacement of my module because it was not yet july. i am being told two separate stories from isuzu employees. i need a written response from isuzu explaining how my defective brake module is not related to the campaign to replace all brake modules in july. i don't think isuzu wants to be responsible for any accidents that may result in the next 3 months because my defective brake module was not attended to. *nlm

In august of 2002 , i was driving my 1999 rodeo that i had leased new in 2002 and this running noise continued after i turned off the engine. it was the abs module. it had to be unplugged to keep the battery from being run down. the repair is about $500.00 and isuzu wants to ignore that there is a problem with this component. before the noise started, the stopping distance was very long and there was a popping feeling in the brake pedal. i took it in to the dealer and was told nothing was wrong and that was the way anti-lock brakes felt the abs light came on. all of this started with 40,000 miles on the vehicle. there is a problem with the rodeo that needs to be addressed and recalled by isuzu without the cost of life or money to the consumer. *jb

When there is ice or snow covered on the road, vehicle does not stop properly. brakes keep resetting, and vehicle takes a long time to come to a stop. consumer has contacted dealer, and dealer stated that this was normal.*ak consumer states this occurs on bumpy roads too and vehicle skids through intersections upon normal braking, dealer has bleed the brakes. at times the brake light and alternator light will illuminate, dealer found that the alternator was not charging, dealer replaced alternator assembly. *slc

Anti-lock brakes engaged and vehicle hits a bump, slushy snow or ice patch caused total loss of braking system for approximately 1-3 second. this also happens in dry weather.
While driving over bumps in road or when going up a hill, and when slight pressure is applied to brakes, pedal goes to floor, causing extended stopping distance, and resulting in a collision. dealer adjusted rear brake cable which temporarily fixed problem for 8,000 miles .please give any further details. *ak

Consumer was traveling approximately 35-40mph on wet pavement and abs kicked in when brakes were applied, and rearended another vehicle. mechanic turned rotors. a complaint was filed with manufacturer. but, abs still kicks in on some surfaces.*ak consumer states that the problem is that when the abs kicks in it is ineffective, consumer also states that the abs keeps the wheels so far from lockup that the brakes do not slow the vehicle. *slc
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC - PEDALS AND LINKAGES

Consumer states the brake pedal linkage is small and too close to the gas pedal, this causes drivers foot to inadvertendly press the gas pedal when applying brakes, consumer was informed that this could not be changed, because that is the design of vehicle.*ak. consumer stated the brake pedal is too small for an automatic, the brake pedal linkage was designed wrong and is bent towards the gas pedal, the linkage should have been designed straight down and the pedal welded on the right side of the linkage.*slc
