Defect SummaryIsuzu is recalling certain model year 1998-2002 isuzu rodeo and model year 2002 isuzu axiom vehicles, and honda is recalling certain 1998-2002 honda passport vehicles, that were originally sold, or are currently registered, in the states of maine, new hampshire, vermont, massachusetts, rhode island, connecticut, new york, new jersey, pennsylvania, delaware, maryland, the district of columbia, west virginia, ohio, indiana, michigan, illinois, wisconsin, minnesota, iowa, missouri, and kentucky. vehicles that have experienced sustained exposure to highly corrosive materials used in some jurisdictions for road deicing purposes may experience excessive corrosion in the vicinity of the forward mounting point bracket for the left or right rear suspension lower link prior to the time that such corrosion would normally be expected.
Consequence SummaryExcessive corrosion may result in the left or right rear suspension lower link bracket becoming detached from the frame, which can affect vehicle handling and potentially cause a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area. for vehicles in which little or no corrosion is found, the area will be treated with an anti-corrosive compound. for vehicles in which corrosion has damaged the rear suspension lower link bracket and affected its connection to the vehicle frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. in the rare event the corrosion is so severe that the reinforcement bracket remedy would not be appropriate, isuzu and honda will develop an appropriate remedy. all inspections and remedies will be provided free of charge for vehicles that are 10 years old or less. for vehicles older than 10 years, isuzu will offer a free remedy, but only if the vehicle is presented to an isuzu service facility, or honda dealer (as applicable), dealer within 12 months of when owner notifications were issued. the safety recall is expected to begin early december 2010. isuzu owners may contact isuzu at 1-800-255-6727. honda owners may contact honda at 1-800-999-1009.

During preliminary evaluation pe09-030, isuzu motors america, inc (isuzu) noted two primary differences once the rear suspension lower link separation occurs between the alleged defect (separation of the lower link from the frame) of this investigation and a safety defect involving lower link separation from the rear axle addressed by isuzu in safety recall 00v-058.in the case of the defect condition identified in recall 00v-058, isuzu stated that the attachment bolt could detach fully, causing separation of the lower link from the rear axle possibly creating a loss of vehicle control. isuzu also stated that this condition occurs early in the service life of the vehicle.in this investigation isuzu noted lower link separation from the frame is a progressive corrosion issue with prior warning to consumers.isuzu also stated that in the event of a lower link separation from the frame, the vehicle is still controllable and can be safely stopped. the office of defect investigation (odi) analyzed complaint data provided by isuzu and america honda motor company, inc (honda), as well as vehicle owner questionnaires submitted to odi from consumers.in total, there were 60 unique reports of lower link separations from the frame including 1 alleged crash and 7 loss of vehicle control incidents that may be related to the alleged defect.most of these complaints indicated that there was no warning prior to the link separation.this preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea09-018) to further assess the scope, frequency and risk to motor vehicle safety of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles.

I was driving on the road at around 35 - i heard a very load thump from around the rear drivers side back tire they car started swerving all over the road. i could barely get it to the side of the road. my son came and was able to nurse it to my husbands house that wasn't that far. the next day my sons put the car on the jack stands thinking maybe the strut came off. when they got under the car the found that the frame of the car had rusted through. when i had looked the car up on line to see if there were any problems with the car in regards to that issue i did find a recall on the rust issue. i started calling the number and left several messages. i finally got through on january the 5th and they tell me that it had closed but if i wanted to get it to an isuzu dealer at my cost that is over 2 hours away and pay for the test they may be able to do something or go after the person because they may have known. i feel this was a serious safety defect in the vehicle and should be taken care of. i loved my car and now have no transportation. there was nothing wrong with any other part of the vehicle and i am grateful i wasn't on the highway and that none of my other children were driving it at the time. *tr

I bought my 2001 isuzu rodeo new. i received a recall notice in 2010 about the suspension brackets in the rear having a rust problem. i had the recall inspection done and the isuzu service center told me that the vehicle was fine and they applied some rust inhibitor. i took my vehicle to a repair shop in aug 2012 for brake work and they informed me that the frame of the vehicle directly in front and behind the rear wheels was almost completely rusted with numerous rust holes in the frame. the frame was so rusted in numerous spots that you could push your finger through the frame and it would crumble under the pressure. i called isuzu and they advised me to take it to an authorized service center they directed me to. at this center i was told that my rust was considered a level 3 incident. isuzu told the repair shop to do a level 3 fix. that included putting larger suspension brackets on and coating the rust with a rust inhibitor. they stated that the frame rust was not covered under the recall, only the brackets. they acknowledged that there were frame issues for these models but their responsibility was only for the suspension brackets. this vehicle is undrivable in it's present condition with almost no strength left in the rear frame. i will have to spend thousands of dollars to have metal welded to the rear of the vehicle to strengthen it and to make it safe enough to drive. a vehicle produced in 2001 should not have this much rust damage to the frame. this was obviously a manufacturing defect that isuzu even acknowledges but they are refusing to accept monetary responsibility for their defect. these cars need to be bought back from the customer for market value of a vehicle of this age and type. please help the thousands of isuzu rodeo owners out there like me who have lost the use of their vehicle through no fault of their own.  I received a notice by mail about a recall on my rodeo, and the company had it towed to a dealership in knoxville some time in august, a month later i received a call from the dealership saying they sent the photos & videos to the company and we should hear from them soon. it is now nearing the end of october, i called the company today, & they said they never received the photos. i'm not sure why it is taking so long, i have been without a vehicle for 4 months now, since the rodeo's axle fell apart 2 months before it was even towed. the recall letter says it should only take aproximately 90 min., or 3-10 hours to fix what is wrong with the axle's or they will provide an alternate remedy. i feel that more than 2 months of determining what to do with this vehicle is more than enough time. i would like to find out whether i will be getting this vehicle back fixed, or whether i need to find something else.

My isuzu was recalled for a defect in the forward mounting brackets of the rear suspension. before i took it in for the recall, i took it to my mechanic to have new brakes. he called me to tell me that the frame was so rotted and rusted not to bother because the car was to far gone. i took it to marty's of kingston, ma.for the recall. they called to tell me that they fixed the brackets but the frame was so rotted that the car was unsafe to drive.this is totally absurd to me. they claim the recall was only on the brackets and isuzu doesn't car if the frame is rotted.so, i had it towed to a junk yard only to be told all they would give me was $800.00. i just put 2 new tires on the front worth $300.00. i don't understand how isuzu is getting away this. the junk yard told me that one of the new brackets put on at the dealership was right next to a big rotted hole in the frame. what does it take for them to take this seriously, someone getting killed! the rodeo was running fine and i hadn't planned on buying a new vechicle until next year. do i have any recourse with isuzu? i just pray that no one gets killed with these rusted frames.

Rear anti-sway bar broke almost caused my daughter to crash. i took it to a mechanic and he discovered the rear frame is severely corroded and is not safe to drive. i have dealt with isuzu and it was hauled to an authorized dealer 110 miles away for repair. they say it has been fixed. they called it a stage 2 fix which is basically spraying a frame treatment on the inside and outside brackets. within the bracket vincity the frame is completely rusted through and i do not feel this vehicle was rated right by the dealer, i believe it should have been a stage 4 fix. i feel this is a terrible saftey issue that isuzu and honda need to step up and take responsiblity for. there are over 150,000 of these vehicles on the road and they need to be taken off the road before lives are lost.

I own a 2001 isuzu rodeo, there was a recall issued in dec or jan timeframe in regards to corrioson of the frame. i took my vechile to an isuzu rodeo dealership like it stated on feb 17. the dealer did state that they would not be able to get to the vechile until the following week. on feb 24 the dealership did contact us and stated the vechile was unrepairable and that they had submitted photos and documentation to isuzu. i spoke with iszuz on march 8 almost 2 weeks after they revcieved the information from the dealer and they seemed inconcerned and stated that the dealer's pictures were inconclusive and that they didnt see why they could not put the brackets on the vechile. i stated that i was told by the dealership told me the issue was beyond repiar and isuzu stated they needed more photos. it is going on three weeks without a vechile and it seems isuzu does not seem to care about the fact the there are indiviudals out there without and vechile and not to mention the fact that the vechile is completely unsafe to drive.

Two days prior to my traction bar detaching itself from the frame in the driver side rear of my 2001 isuzu rodeo that only has 82,983 miles on it. i was hearing knocking under the car. never did see anything wrong other than the whole frame is rusted.. driving on a main road in town with my little girl in the car i lost control luckily i have a 5 speed i was able to down shift to slow down before hitting the breaks i pulled off the road to find the stabilizer bar detached. the amount of rust and rot on the frame, any welder and mechanic that looked at it said it is not worth repairing because of the winters we have it will just fall apart again. this needs to be a recall there are so many people out there with the same problem as me and many of us carry our children in the vehicle. *tr

The car was driven away from a gas station, and with no warning, it began to weave all over the road. upon inspection, it was discovered that the driver's side control arm separated from the frame, due to serious rust. the control arm attaches to the rear axle, and is welded to the lower side of the frame in front of the rear wheel. the corrosion was so severe at that point, that the bracket separated from the frame. this causes the rear axle to move, resulting in the car steering with the rear wheels. this condition makes it extremely difficult to control the car. the car was towed home. a few weeks later, it was towed to a body shop for an estimate. the owner inspected the car, and said that it would be difficult to repair, and estimated the cost at $3,200.00. the car has not been repaired, and is not drivable. i purchased this car new in 2001, and have always garaged it and maintained it properly. the body, drivetrain, and interior are in excellent condition, but the car is sitting in the driveway, because it is unsafe, and i cannot afford to repair it at this point. *tr

This rodeo was purchased in july. after a test drive, a vibration was noticed in the steering wheel and ride of the vehicle. we were told by the salesman and sales manager that this was normal due to tire flat spots from sitting on the dealers' lot. we were told to drive the vehicle for 500+ miles and see if the problem alleviates itself. at the same time, we agreed to do this with an alignment done and the tires balanced and rotated later. we took the vehicle in on august 2, 2001 and were told that two tires had to be replaced due to the tires not being round and would not balance. we were able to get two new tires that had already been ordered fro another customer's rodeo (same problem). the wheels were not replaced at this point, only the tires. we were told they could give us the other customer's tires, since they knew he was out of town. this was fine with us. an alignment was also done at this time. the problem was better but not good enough. a little time revealed the same problem was reoccuring and the wobble was getting worse! we took the vehicle back on august 11, 2001. we were then told that all 4 tires and wheels had to be replaced under a tsb that was out for this problem. i logged a complaint wirh isuzu regarding the fact that i had to wait up to 10 business days for the replacement wheels and tires to arrive. my concern is that all 4 tires were bad, two which have already been replaced at this point, and i am being told that it is ok for me to drive my vehicle on the highway and tat no danger exists with these tires. i do not agree, since the entire wheel assemblies are being replaced. i will be more than happy to provide copies of repair work. to date, my wheels have not been replaced. the wheels on my rodeo are the steel wheels, not the aluminum alloy.  My husband was leaving the house, when he pulled away the frame, not the lower link bracket broke. the bolts were still in place. the frame is so rotted he was able to push his finger through it more than a foot away from the lower link bracket. they (isuzu) has decided to scrap my 2001 rodeo, i bought it in october 2010, a month after the recall (which i knew nothing about and still have not recieved a letter of recall) for the price of $5000. this vehicle should not have been on the lot to be sold. isuzu should have gotten them off the road. now they are only offering $1500 for it. i am forced to take it, because i am unable to go without a car, being a 1 car family, and money is tight. i have to take this offer to pay on the car i had to go buy to replace my rodeo, which is is wonderful condition with the exception of the frame, that is not covered in this recall. the wrong parts are being recalled and we as consumers are being forced to take extremely to little for our cars.

On august 24, 2010 i was making a right turn from a parking lot, i heard a very loud noise and bang from my 2001 isuzu rodeo pulled off to the side of road. that's when i noticed the drivers side rear control arm had separated from the frame.since that time i have followed all of isuzu's requests for a remedy and now waiting for them to buyback my truck. i'm just now filing complaint because of what i've read online about their absurd buyback offers and them requesting consumers to fill out a w9 form, when the offers a @ a considerable loss to what we rodeo owners originally paid. and the fact they (isuzu) knows darn right well the cause of the defect is that bad metal was used to build the frames, not the suspension to cause the recall.

While driving the vehicle the rear suspension broke causing the vehicle to swerve into oncoming traffic. luckily there was no accident and the vehicle was towed to a friends home until we could determine what needed to be done. i had known about the recall since late december but was unable to get the vehicle in to be checked that quickly. the closest repair facility was 95 miles away from where i lived. bill colwell ford in hudson, iowa was contacted and the vehicle was towed from my friends home. an attempt to repair was made but it was later determined it would not be possible. i have waited for isuzu to contact me for over a week regarding a repurchase remedy for this issue. i have contacted isuzu as well as the service manager at bill colwell ford, and isuzu is holding up the process. i am paying payments and insurance on a salvage vehicle which doesn't seem fair. i am greatly concerned they will attempt to undervalue my vehicle if they ever get that far in the process. i am without a vehicle and i am extremely angry that more isn't being done to help.

Within the past few weeks we received a recall notice on our 2001 isuzu rodeo. i called the local isuzu dealer and was told that they have not received the tech bulletin nor the parts to fix the vehicle but they would call me when they could get our vehicle in. they said it was only a minor issue that required spraying an anti rust spray on a part of the undercarriage. yesterday, 01/30/2011 the left forward mounting bracket ripped away from the frame causing our vehicle to go into a irrecoverable clockwise spin. my wife and 2 year old son were in the vehicle with me. my wife was struck by flying debris and got some scratches and bruises. my son was secured in his car seat but was struck by flying debris and he got a contusion on his forhead and a black eye. i was able to fight through the spin and we ended up in a ditch with no other vehicles involved. we were 5 minutes away from being on the highway at highway speeds. if this were the case there would have been no way to avoid a life threatening crash. these vehicles are unsafe and are rolling death traps. isuzu has told me that this is a level 4 failure and probably my vehicle will not be repaired under the recall due to the extensive corrosion. they state in their recall notice that there will be an alternative remedy for these situations. when i asked what the alternative remedy was i was told that they have not figured out what they will be doing yet. this is unacceptable.

My 2001 isuzu rodeo with 90,000 has completely corroded underneath and a steering bracket became detached from the rear wheel while the car was being driven in traffic. the isuzu factory did recall the car, but it has been sitting disabled in my driveway for 2 months now and i don't think it can be fixed (the entire underside is rusted out). the company is botching this recall: this is a very dangerous condition. these cars need to be bought back by the company and taken out of circulation. they basically told me too bad when i explained that being unable to drive this car is unacceptable: i need a car! they also told me not to try to get the car fixed on my own. i can't trade it in, i can't fix it, i can't drive it...i'm basically screwed. i bought this car new and am the original owner. i have always taken excellent care of it as far as maintenance, oil changes, etc. the car looks great, the body and engine are fine, but yet, it is a total loss, at only 90,000 miles. something needs to be done to get this company to make this right for the victims of this factory defect, those of us who unknowingly bought a car that was destined to self-destruct in 9 years. it is only a matter of time before someone dies in a horrific accident from this; it almost happened to me, but i was able to get over to the side of the road. when the bracket gave way, the car began to swerve uncontrollably.

2001 izuzu rodeo frame rusted completely through while my daughter was driving near boston ma. thank god she is ok however all persons who handled the accident could not believe how rusted out it was. she was quite lucky she was in the right lane of 3 when it happened. the frame broke through on the passenger side in front of the rear wheel about 18 inchs. at that point the car became unmanageable and swirved in all directions. the car was deemed of course undriveable and was towed to a junkyard. the kicker is my other daughter has the same car and year and also has a rotted frame. you never would guess looking at the car (unless) you look below. darn shame someone needs to get these cars off the road and have izuzu step up. extremely dangerous.

My car is a 2001 isuzu rodeo. i am its 2nd owner and i purchased it from the estate of a deceased woman. it had very low mileage. a few days ago i noticed a jarring sound coming from the left rear side of metal making contact. i planned to take it to my mechanic for inspection early this week as i was intending to go on a long trip. on saturday, august 28, my car swerved and i could tell that there was a major problem. i pulled into a parking lot and saw that a large flange attached to a rear axle stabilizer had completely disconnected from the frame. as i was not at all far from home i returned my car to my driveway. upon closer inspection i saw that the metal of the left side frame of my car was like paper - completely disintegrating. my car is in great mechanical condition. i had my transmission rebuilt last year. i use it in my work as a professional musician to transport my instruments. i have since learned that there have been widespread incidents of 1998-2002 isuzu rodeos having this metallurgical defect. it appears to be unrepairable. it seems that the engineers and metallurgists at isuzu created a defect in their formulation of the steel for the frame. this car should and must be recalled, not only for the sake of those who suffer monetary loss due to the design flaw and the inability to use their vehicle, but also due to the safety concerns of those who are unaware of this defect and the risk of loss of control on a highway.

No prior warning until a loud bumping noise at the rear of the vehicle & lost ability to control rear of the vehicle, no crash due to traveling at low rate of speed & able to pull off highway. left rear bolts connecting body to frame had broken away allowing body to move back & forth on the frame, unable to control steering. upon inspection by mechanic was told left rear was broken completely away, the right rear was also ready to break & the area around gas tank was also very fatigued. vehicle unable to be repaired due to safety concerns, metal extremely fatigued for a vehicle of this age, vehcile had to be junked! body of vehicle in excellent shape, but frame like that of a vehicle 30 or more years old!

Returning home from work, stopped at intersection, when my turn to go i pulled out on road and noticed that vehicle felt like i had a flat tire. steering was very strange and felt like vehicle was all over road. i was only going approximately 10-15 mph maximum as i was going from stop light to stop light. when i accelerated from initial stop light i heard a crack and loud scraping sound. i went approx 1/10 mile till i could pull off road on shoulder then into parking lot. when i got out to see if i could see anything wrong i noticed under car in front of rear wheels that what appeared to be stabilizer bars for rear wheels were hanging down under car and that the frame on both sides was broken in half . i had no previous indication that this was breaking. i fear that if i had been traveling at a higher rate of speed other than going from stop light to stop light that i would have lost control of the vehicle. the entire rear axle would float freely and twist from side to side when attempting to accelerate and rear wheels would ride out from under vehicle and when braking rear wheels rode up under vehicle. this vehicle is no longer drivable and is basically a complete loss and is not covered under any type of motor vehicle insurance coverage due to no accident involvement. *tr

2001 isuzu rodeo rear suspension on passenger side let go due to a rotted frame. called isuzu corporate and they told me there was nothing they could do about it. i bought this car brand new in april of 2002, and would have hoped that for 32,000 the shelf life would be more than 7.6 years. *tr
