After maintaining our 2000 isuzu trooper by the book and being fully aware of the oil consumption problem, it blew the engine at 103000. i kept very good documentation of all the repairs- and there were a lot of them, isuzu is not backing their powertrain warranty (120,000 miles)because they found a way to get away with it by saying because i didn't have actual receipts for every oil change even though i did many myself and documented dates and mileage, they are not responsible. i've done some research which was easy because its such a common problem, but didn't find much on any trooper owners satisfied or fairly treated by isuzu. the sticker price was $32,000 when i purchased it in 2000 i fully expected to get more than 103,000 out of it. if anyone has any luck with the same problem, please let me know and in the mean time im going to do as much as i can to fight this. *tr

Like many others i have read about, my 2000 isuzu trooper with about 63,000 miles is using oil excessively. my mechanic has found no leaks. due to the numerous similar complaints i have read about, why has isuzu not issued some kind of recall? *tr

2000 isuzu trooper with apx 53k miles on it, regular oil changes about every 4-5,00 miles (isuzu owners' manual recommends every 7,500 mi - which would not work it seems). i had checked the oil previously and found it ok a few days before taking trip, had engine rod break lose and punch hole in engine block. have seen many other examples of similar problems with this engine. luckily i bought it used with a honda care extended warranty, and the engine is being replaced under that warranty. *nm

I puchased my 2000 isuzu trooper in february 2004 with 36,000 miles on the engine. since then i have changed my own oil every 3,000 miles religiously. i have either changed at my work (a local chevrolet dealership) or at my own home.*ak the last time i changed my oil was 2 months ago (9/25/04) at 47900 miles and on (11/24/04) with 49800 miles the oil light flashed at me when i came to a stop about a block from my home then went out. once i got home i checked the oil and it did not register on the dipstick at all. i started to pour in oil it took all of 4 quarts of oil to fill it full. this is an on going problem with my vehicle being i have been trying to keep record of it as i was advised by a repair shop months ago when i first noticed the problem with this vehicle shortly after i purchased it. i believe by now i am over the 60 month warranty per isuzu but i will check on that (11/26/04), but i also have an extended warranty through heritage that i purchased with the trooper. i am probably one of the few that may get this taken care of on someone else's dime. but i personally know that this is a known problem by the manufacturer and there are many people out there with this same type of vehicle with this problem as i have seen on the internet. all you have to do is type oil consumption 2000 isuzu trooper and have fun, it will keep you busy all day. i believe the manufacture should do something about this problem.

Changed oil at 44900 miles. went on a trip after 1000 miles enigne freezes then oil light comes on after suv comes to a complete stop. lucky to get off to the side of the interstate. had suv towed 700 miles to dealer. suv is under warranty. told by isuzu its my problem no oil in the engine. told by an independent mechanic that the oil had been burned, not leaking. *la

In february 2003, i brought my 2000 isuzu into a mechanic shop to have the intake gasket, upper and lower replaced, after owning my vehicle for only six months. at that time my engine light had come on and stayed on. after having the intake gasket repaired the light remained on. i was told by the mechanic that there was a wiring problem and it would cost more to fix it or i could just ignore it. now, six months later, i have a blown engine. i was informed that my vehicle had used four quarts of oil in less than 3000 miles. i never received a warning indicating my oil was low. the mechanic informed me my vehicle had been burning the oil, no leaking it, because it was apparent by the appearance of the muffler. *la

Excessive oil consumption-denial by isuzu to replace engine.
06/10/2004108/20/2000
The trooper of 2000 has the same main problem that thousands of other owners have - excessive oil consumption. what bothers me is that manufacturer absolutely does not care about what consumers say. there is no answer, no explanations, no recalls. well, here is my answer - i will never buy any isuzu product again, neither me, nor my friends or relatives. the whole world knows about this major isuzu trooper problem which is not comfortable and safe to the owners. but the manufacturer couldn't care less. *ak

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 60 mph the oil light intermittently illuminated. the vehicle was pulled over and the contact checked the level of oil. the oil level was not full, and oil needed to be added. the oil light then stayed off. when the vehicle started again, the light illuminated again and the engine began to knock and would not respond. the vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop which determined the crankshaft had gone bad and the rods and pistons were burned. as a result the engine must be replaced. updated 3/17/2006 - *nm

I was driving home @ 12am had about 76 miles to go i heard a little bit of knocking i was trying to pull over and all of a sudden everything shut down and locked up. i was standing on the brakes and hanging on to the steering wheel trying to get across a lane and off to the side of the road and coast to a safe area. with no warning lights or warning what so ever my vehicle's engine seized and it was over that fast. i have maintained my vehicle with oil changes and now they are saying i had a sudden loss of oil and was lacking lubrication and rod # 1 broke and # 6 in wedged in the block and something else. hello when they took the engine apart there was 2.5 quarts in the pan and the rest on the engine what do you mean lack of lubrication. they said this was an unusual circumstance and i have to come up with about 4500 to fix it. get this i bought the extended warranty from honda care (apco for the used vehicles) they said it is unfortunate this happened to you but we will not cover it! this is a mystery and no one understands what happened but i have read numerous complaint on message boards and this is not an unusual problem. i don't recommend isuzu to anyone after all i have read. also honda care (apco)for used cars they will find a way to tell you no not there problem. second time they will not cover something for me. i paid $1000 for the warranty and all they can say is sorry for your loss! the dealership is trying and trying to get them to honor it and apco wants what the defected part that caused failure. nobody knows! dealership is great and a very big dealership @ that and they seem to care about me and my situation and not just telling me to go away. great people 2nd car i got from them. dealership who sells this extended warranties believe this is ridiculous and feel it should be fixed. *jb

Prior to leaving on trip from minnesota to montana i checked the oil and it was fine. just outside billings, mt my engine made a loud banging sound followed by engine power loss and finally the warning lights on the dash. zero oil registered in the engine. diagnosed as a seized crank by the isuzu dealership. 70,100 miles and a seized engine out of warranty since i bought the truck used. $6,000 for a new engine does not make fiscal sense given the wholesale value of truck was $7500.*jb

I bought the truck in october 2004. noticed it was using some oil. i took the vehicle on a 900 miles trip after an oil change. i kept track of its oil level and on the final 200 miles of driving it used about a 1/2 quart of oil. the truck has 56,000 miles on it and is in otherwise excellent condition. i have looked at other sites and found this to be a common flaw with the 3.5 liter motor. i would encourage others to write to the nhtsa about this problem to possibly have this remedied. please let others know.*ak

I have been adding 1-2 quarts of oil every 5,000 miles. dealership says they cannot find problem. check engine light came on and they say that the problem is the valve which is not covered under powertrain warranty costing me $470. and they still don't know why i had to add two quarts over the last 2500 miles.*jb

2000 isuzu trooper with 71,000 miles. excessive oil lost. i am the second owner of this vehicle. i have always changed the oil at 3000 miles. there are no oil leaks. yesterday the oil light came on and i added 4 quarts. this brought the oil level to the add 1 quart mark. in 3000 miles my trooper consumed 5 quarts of oil. i now have to replace the engine ... $7400. i have spoken to several mechanics and have done research on the web and have discovered that this is a very common problem. i would like to suggest a recall to hold isuzu responsible for a defective design. *jb

I bought it used in oct 2007 with 60,000 mi on it. the oil gets changed every 3,000 mi but i need to add a qt of oil every 700 mi. as far as gas mileage (it's the pits ) maybe 11 mpg at best. i thought isuzu was a good buy (guess not). *tr

Vehicle uses excessive oil. this is a common problem with the 3.6l in 2000. check the isuzu forum online. on highway trips, uses 1 quart every 200 miles. on shorter trips in town, can go 500 to 700 miles before needing a quart. it doesn't leak, and doesn't burn. the problem is caused by the oil not draining down after being pushed on top the cylinders. it eventually has to be burned, or sent through the exhaust, particularly on long trips. on shorter trips, you stop before to much is burned off or pushed out, so it drains back. the oil drain back holes are to small and to few. i'm told there are 4, but on later engines there are 10 per cylinder. isuzu should be made to own up to the design problem and fix the engines. i bought mine at 22,000 miles, and now have 100,000, and it has always done this, but gotten progressively worse. *jb

I have owned this suv fron new. i have changed the oil and filter each and every 3000 miles. i have used fully synthetic oil, mobile, 10w-30. the vehicle uses at varying rates from 1qt of oil per 1000 miles to 1 qt. per 2000 miles. while it is within isuzu guidelines it is obviously excessive. i have discussed this with the dealer at each service trip and they just chuckle and say your doing better than most. *nm

Car has lost power and gas mileage has been cut in half (maybe 12 mpg at best) has only 39000 miles...dealer says the tubes that recycle un-burned gas fumes are clogged and need cleaning but they nor isuzu has a tool to do the job...it's hard to believe that a huge company like isuzu would have such a problem. *jb

This intermittent problem could cause someone to get injured if they are in freeway traffic and the vehicle will only go 25 mph!!! this vehicle has an intermittent problem of stalling when stopped at intersections (vehicle is idling). the car can be resstarted immediatly. however, after starting it has little power and the maximum speed is 25 mph. both the check engine and the reduced power warning indicator lights come on. it has been to two dealers a total of 6 times and they have not resolved the problem. i am afraid to drive the vehicle as i have been in 50 mph traffic going only 25 mph and feared for my safety. i would appreciate your review. the dealer has replaced the throttle plate, re-wired the wiring harness and made other adjustments. they still cannot fix the problem. this needs investigation! thanks
