Complaint regarding services rendered by jaguar of tacoma.*mr the consumer stated the vehicle would not come out of park easily. the dealer changed a cable, it then would come out of park, but not as smooth. the consumer then stated it almost became impossible for the gear to come out of park. when the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, he was told there was a transmission problem that would cost 1300.00. the consumer was told the manufacturer was aware of the problem since 2002. (jaguar s-type). the vehicle also had front end problems. *jb *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 jaguar s-type. whenever the contact parks on an incline, the gear becomes stuck in the park position. in order to move the vehicle, it must be pushed and rocked back and forth until it pops out of gear. occasionally, the vehicle can shift into reverse, which can be dangerous for those pushing the vehicle in the rear. the vehicle was taken to a dealer and they stated that this was a very common issue with the 2000 s-types; however, there was no recall or remedy. through research, the contact found numerous complaints related to this failure and believes that a recall should be issued. the failure mileage was 24,000 and current mileage was 65,000. updated 8/18/09 *cn updated 0821/09.

I financed a jaguar in february 2008 and have had a problem from almost the beginning with the gearshift, getting out of park while on the slightest incline i've had to get out and rock the car just to get it into reverse and this is all the time. more recently i reversed out of my driveway without any problems but, when i tried to put it in drive it would not move forward, backward, or anywhere. i had it towed to the closest jaguar dealer who initially told me it may just be the gearshift cable needing to be adjusted a $150 job i said ok that sounds pretty good being a foreign car and all. i got a call back and he said it was the rear drive shafters needing to be replaced ok good not the transmission needing to be replaced........how much? i asked, about $3200....for about $2000 more i can get a whole new transmission, right? this is ridiculous and i think the jaguar manufacturer should look into this problem or atleast do a recall i mean how many complaints does it take..it should only take one to check it out this is not something that just happened it's has been ongoing since 2000 (i've done alot of research before writing this complaint) 8 years later and the problem is still here...i really wish jaguar would own up and try to accommodate everyone's problems as best as they could..jennifer thomas *tr

I own a 2000 jaguar s-type with only 42k miles on it. i drive it only about 6 weeks a year as it is stored the rest of the year. my transmission is gone! my car has only been serviced by the piehler jaguar dealership. without warning, the gearshift box fault light came on; the engine would bang and drag into gears. i was told that the gear shift box was sealed therefore disallowing anyone to add transmission fluid. since my car has only been serviced by jaguar, why wouldn't the service manager have indication that the transmission was going. i asked the service manager if there has been any recalls on the jaguar transmission, and he told me no. that was not true as i have found recalls concerning the jaguar s-type transmissions. however, the jaguar manager wants customer to pay instead of dealer-pay for the replacement of a new transmission. the price quoted to me is $4,000 plus tax. i had the deluxe extended warranty and when it ran out, this dealership refused to renew another extended warranty. a car of this cost and caliber should not have transmission problems with mileage under 50,000 miles. i would like the jaguar /dealership/ or ford to replace the transmission due to the defective design in the transmission design. the car's error message indicated gear shift box fault. i've been told that the jaguar transmissions were built by jaguar/bec transmissions with a flaw in the design. the jaguar dealership i have my car at is piehler jaguar in rochester, ny. the service manager's name is brian. the telephone number is 585.671.7909. i would like to have my car repaired due to this fault in transmission design and paid for by the dealership or ford or jaguar. please advise. thank you. barbara postell 2000 jaguar s-type owner. *tr

Bought s-type back in october 2006, since then car has been costing me a lot of money. transmission get stuck in park at driveway with low inclination, even with the parking brake on before shifting to park. had cable replaced and didn't fix the problem, cost me 350.00. i believe that a recall was in order for the number of affected vehicles that i had noticed complaining of it at the nhtsa website, or maybe somebody in government was not doing his/her job protecting the consumer's rights against greedy corporations.*ak

On my 2000 s-type 4.0 i have had two transmissions replaced and is in need of a third. jaguar's position (from corporate), that it is not unusual for a transmission to go under 50,000 miles, however, they refuse to put it in writing. there are probably hundreds if not thousands of owners going through the same problem. on every website there are complaints about failing transmissions. jaguar definitely is aware of the problem but offers no assistance. i am willing to bet there is some corporate memo regarding how to cover this up. *nm

On several occasions i've had problems with my 2000 s type jaguar. the transmission causes many safety problems. such as not shifting, hesitation etc. which could be a major safety issue while driving on the hwy. once my fiance was driving the vehicle and the hesitation of the transmission caused him to slam into the curb causing major damage to the front end. i've also had the transmission gasket replaced at the dealership. now its back in the shop awaiting a new transmission. jaguar is not taking any responsibility of these problems. several other jaguar owners have experienced similar problems. thank you for your time. lisa b upshur. *nm

2000 jaguar s-type has a defect in the transmission. if the vehicle is parked on a hill without the emergency brake on, the gears will get stuck and the vehicle either has to be drug down the hill to level ground for the gear to shift out or it has to be towed. the jaguar dealer has attempted to repair it twice unsuccessfully. *nm

We purchased a new s-type 2000 jaguar. the car now has 40,000 miles and has had three transmissions. starting with the second transmission, i tried to get jaguar to step up to the plate and admit this car was faulty. unfortunately nothing really happened. i just received a absurd thank you for contacting jaguar message. the car started having problems again about a month ago, i took it in and was told the car needed a new transmission. this would make the thrid. the car was also out of warrenty by three months which translated to my paying for the $6000 transmission. again, i contacted jag corp and even got so far as to have a customer rep look into my case. they looked and declined any responsibilty. i got the transmission replaced and paid the 6 grand. the car has been out of the shop for three days. it has its third transmission. yesterday, the car started making noise. i called the dealer and was told to have the car towed in. i was just notified that the car needs another transmission. this will make the fourth. the thrid one was only three days old before it went out. so far we are getting about 10,000 miles per transmission and all jag managed to offer was $1000 towards the third one. i can not believe any car manufacturer would think so little of its customers that they turn a cold eye to a car that so obviously has a major fault. four transmissions in 40,000 miles and they continue to say it is not their fault. i wonder whose fault it is? i am very disppointed in the manufacturer and this model. i currently am pursuing other procedures to get a resolution to this ongoing problem that i have been trying to get jaguar to resolve for three years. *ak

Purchased a 2000 s-type jaguar to find that there is a design flaw. as a previous automotive engineer, i can't believe that this can be allowed to exist. i parked my car on an incline and when i tried to leave i could not put it into 'reverse', or any gear. i pulled on the shifter thus breaking a pin, causing the shifter to 'free' float. i called jaguar's customer care, which is great, and found that they were going to have to tow my car to the dealership. during the problem solving questions they asked, they stated was i on an incline. i responded yes. they then proceeded to inform me that the fix was to get out of the car and rock it back and forth to release the pressure on the transmission/shifter. that on inclines the car will get stuck, so get out and push it. my car had the shifter completely replaced and the dealer was aware of this issue with this car. since then i've had this happen 2 more times. i was told to put on the parking brake then shift to park while on any type of incline (> a few degrees). i've had that told to me by three jaguar customer service specialists. i love this car. why can't they fix this! it's embarrassing and dangerous! someone can be seriously hurt. *jb

I leased a new 2000 jaguar s-type in april of 2000. since that time , the tranmission was faulty. jaguar found the problem to be a faulty transmission and replaced it. since that time, i've experienced numerous problems related to the transmission. the main problem is a very serious safety issue dealing with the car rolling back while in drive. when on a moderate incline, the vehicle will roll back 10-15 feet while engaged in drive. the only way to stop this roll is to either gun the engine(which is also unsafe) or apply the brake and quickly give the car gas. this is occuring on a moderate incline! i have advised jaguar and the dealership to no avail. they have tried to fix the transmission 4 times now and still don't know what is causing this. the last time i brought the car in, the service manager(mike barnes) test drove it and the same problem happened to him. he tried to correct the problem and again their mechanics coulkd not do it. i then asked for a receipt stating he and i were in the vehicle when it rolled back 10 feet before aplying the brake and he would not do this for me. i then contacted the sales manager on call on april 2, 2000 @3p.m. and he said there was no reason why i couldn't have a reciept stating the car rolled back 10 feet with me and mr. barnes in vehicle. after the sales manager questioned mr. barnes numerous times on the issue, mr. barnes stated and i qoute-it is in the best interest of the dealership that i don't write a reciept stating this. i was present at the time of this statement and appalled that he would risk me life to cover for the dealership. idemanded a receipt and still did not receive on stating the roll back, instead he gave me one saying i was just there and every thing checked out to dealer specs. i said what is dealer specs and mr. barnes stated he did not know. this is fraud and a cover up. i since have contacted a lawyer, lemon law office, center for auto safety, better business bureau and the states attor. *a

After parking car on an incline, parking would not release shifter. the vehicle had to be pushed forward to relieve pressure, but the shifter cable was damaged any way. parking brake must be engaged to help relieve pressure. since, faulty servo or hydraulic pump made 5th gear inoperable while driving on the interstate. this seems to be a recurring problem with this transmission. also, two window regulators have been replaced and another just broke. *tr

I own a jaguar 2000 s. i bought it in august 2003. i loved the car and it worked great. on april 11, 2004, i parked my car on a slight incline with the park break on. the car would not shift out of park. while trying to shift into reverse, the gear shifter broke. i was stranded with my two children. my car was towed to jaguar dealership in portland, oregon. they pushed on back of the car to get it to shift. the car is on warranty, so they replaced the shifter. i was told the only remedy was to use the park break while using the foot break, before shifting into park. i feel this is unacceptable. we are human and forget to apply our parking break before shifting into park. now, tonight, april 26; it happened again. we were parked on a hill. my husband had his foot on the break, did not remove it from the break and put it in park without using the park break. we were stuck again. jaguar told us to give the car a push from behind to shift it out of park; it worked. how embarrasing to have to push a car from behind, and how dangerous to push a car up a hill to get it to go into reverse. if the car rolled backwards for any apparent reason, it would have killed /or injured my husband and brother-in-law. i find this unacceptable. i do not want to be stranded with my children, just because i forgot to put on my emergency brake on or did not use it correctly. it is dangerous for a woman with children to be put in this vulnerable situation where a man might not be present to give the car a boost up the hill. i am very frustrated and disappointed. i no longer want my beautiful car. i feel stuck. i could not sell this car in good conscience.*ak

Our 2000 jaguar s-type 3.0l sedan was parked on a slight upward incline with its gear selector in park. when the car was re-started it could not be taken out of park. after numerous tries to move the gear shift out of park, the shift linkage was broken. the car had to be towed to the dealer for repair, costing roughly $2200, plus the towing fee. jaguar cars ltd. investigated and then refused to accept any responsibility for this failure, but the dealer, cush jaguar in san diego, eventually agreed to cover half of the repair costs. this is apparently a common occurrence with this model. the san diego dealer told us that they have had 20 or 30 occurrences of this same problem. a search of the nhtsa website found 15 nearly identical occurrences reported to the odi. this is a safety issue, not only with respect to stranding a car's occupants, but also with respect to potentially blocking roadways and driveways used for emergency vehicle access and for emergency exits. i ask that the nhtsa at least require jaguar cars ltd. to inform owners of these vehicles of the existence of this problem and the steps they recommend to minimize its occurrence. but it would be preferable if the nhtsa were to issue a recall requiring jaguar to modify the faulty pawls in these transmissions. *jb

While away on a business trip my wife called to tell me that our 200 s type jaguar was inoperable and the gear shifter was floating - not able to shift out of park. upon inspection i found that the gear shift lever was broken. i called the dealer in harrisburg pa and told them about the problem and the service advisor told me that since it was on an incline we should have used the emergency brake prior to shifting in to park. i asked if this was a common occurrence and he stated that i would have to get used to using the emergency brake with this vehicle and that it was a defect in the manufacturer of the transmission. i asked if this was a common occurrence and he stated - yes. i asked for a ballpark quote of what the repair would be and was told $400 for replacement of the shifter and $1200 for the transmission to replace a pin. i ordered the shifter part from the dealer and replaced and have used the emergency brake at all times - occasionally we still have shifter lock up and have to push on the rear of the vehicle to un jam the shifter. *jb

This is the third time i've had a problem with my 2000 jaguar s. 1st was in may 2005 while parked on a slight incline in my driveway the car would not shift out of park. after it set for a while, it shifted into drive. the same thing had happened a few months earlier when the car was being inspected. this time it was not on an incline, but the service technician had a hard time backing it out of the service bay. i took it to the dealership and they replaced the hand selector lever, gears, cable gear assembly. in august 2005 same problem happened again in my driveway. this time when taking it to the dealership, they replaced a missing bolt where transmission shift cable bolts to transmission. now that the car is no longer under warranty, the same thing happened again on 2/25/06 in my driveway. shaking the car back and forth did something and i was able to get it out of park, but the only gear it would go in was a manual 2nd and reverse. i've called jaguar customer complaint line and the dealership. i was told by customer service that the original repair from may '05 has a one year warranty so it should be covered. however, i don't know if i'll be able to drive the car to the dealership and she could not authorize towing. i really believe odi should look into this problem before someone gets seriously hurt.*jb

Wow, it is reassuring to know that i am not alone in my complaint about a faulty park pawl although you would never know it by the way i have been treated by the dealership and the manufacturer! basically, i've been told that since the car is no longer under the original warranty, a manufacturing malfunction/flaw is my problem even though i have an extended warranty plan and an invoice from a prior service indicating that the park pawl is faulty. the problem was supposed to have been taken care of at that june 16, 2005, service. however, the same problem recurred in january 2006, costing me $1577 to have it fixed. the last time i had a problem was when i parked my car on the upslope of a driveway. when i attempted to take the car out of park, the park pawl would not release no matter what i did. after trying unsuccessfully several times to move the lever, it broke. aaa was unable to do anything and i had to wait until the following day for a mechanic and flatbed tow truck to come out from the dealership to remove the console and release the park pawl. it has since been replaced..............at my expense. i have written letters to the president of jaguar cars, the chief executive officer and chairman of the board of ford motor company as well as its board of directors and to the general manager of the dealership. no one is willing to accept responsibility for the replacement/repair. is there no recourse for the consumer even though it is under an extended warranty and the manufacturer is aware that there seems to be an ongoing problem with this specific part especially since it was brought to their attention several years ago as noted on the nhtsa website? how do i recoup an expense that i feel i should not be responsible for? *jb

Through talking with jaguar and looking through this website, there have been many troubled by a design defect that has been under reported in this car. when parked in my driveway, which has a slight incline as many do, i could not put the car back into gear. trying to shift into gear caused the pin on the hand selector lever to break. it could not be taken out of park. had to tow the car to the dealer which is 40 miles away. i lost 1/2 day of work and missed appointments. i also had to rent my own car for 2 days until the dealer could fix it. dealer made it sound like it was my fault for not putting on the parking brake before i shifted into park. i read through all the owners manual and there is no indication or warning to do so. i have never been informed otherwise. i asked the dealer who also said there was no mention of it. i have had several other cars parked in this driveway over many years with no problems such as this. the 2000 s type has a design flaw which is not being handled properly by jaguar. i was just fortunate it was in my own driveway when it happened. hope i can always remember the unwritten sequence, apply foot brake, apply hand brake, shift to park, lift off foot brake and then cross your fingers.*jb

On august 12, 2003 while parked on a slight incline, the car would not get out of gear. this had occurred once before, however, another jaguar owner had this problem and reported she call a tow truck and when the car was removed from the incline the car went into gear. so, when it first happened to me, which was a couple of weeks prior to 08-12-03, i pushed it, it rolled and went into gear. well, the next time it happened it wouldn't get into gear, and the gear shifter broke. now, the car woujld go into gear and not move at all. had to call a tow truck on that saturaday to be towed to the service center. well, today is august 18, 2003 i am reporting this. the car is still in the shop. there was a backlog per the service center for this part. the gear shifter and/transmission shifter. in plain common sense if parts of this nature are on such a backlog, then i would assume there is a problem with the issue of the transmission in this model jaguar. we need satisfaction as a consumer. i even have extended warranty with smartchoice 2000, and they are in liquidation. the service center is telling me i am not insured and i have a contract stating so. that is another issue that will be complained about.*ak

I parked 2000 s-type jaguar on hill and due to faulty shifter, the gear shift became jammed in park . i called jaguar assistance & was told i should have pulled up the handbrake before i placed my car in park. i asked if this was in the owner's manual & was told no. they also said i could have gotten someone to push the car from the back & it would have popped into gear. by this time i am appalled to find that the customer must go through all of this agony to get a luxury car into gear! obviously, they have thoroughly researched methods to correct this problem after it occurs. this lead me to question if a recall had ever been done to correct this defect that is prevalent in 2000 s-types or if a letter has been sent to the customers explaining there are special procedures that one must follow to prevent your jag from being stuck in park on a hill. i was never notified or informed that i must pull up the handbrake before i place the car in park. it is not fair to place the burden of fixing this problem upon the customer. whether i parked on a hill or on a flat level, my car should go into gear with no problem. before i could give the make & model of my car they asked if it was a 2000 s-type & i said yes. jaguar roadside assistance & the customer relations department stated that they get these calls frequently regarding 2000 s-types becoming jammed into gear. i asked if a recall had been done & they said no. i had my car towed to jaguar & they called to notify that it would cost me, the customer $661.00 to repair my car. i mailed a letter to jaguar customer relations stating it was no fault of mine that the car became jammed into park & was informed that since my car is no longer under warranty, jaguar will not pay for the repairs. a warranty is irrelevant when this is a prevalent problem in this model. i have done research & spoke other jaguar services here & was told the shifters are faulty in these models and a recall should have been done.
