I was traveling at 75mpg north from atlanta entering knoxville tennesse at 23:00 when i turned on the cruise control. the engine instantly shut down without warning. luckily traffic was light at that time of the evening and i was able to coast with the gear in neutral to the nearest exit ramp. i removed the key from the ignition and restarted the car easily. i was able to complete my trip back to cleveland, ohio without the use of the cruise control. it;s been over a year since the incident and the car runs fine. since the incident, i have never nor will i ever use the cruise control again. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jaguar x-type. while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle accelerated without pressure being applied to the accelerator pedal. the contact attempted to depress the brake pedal, but the vehicle would not slow down. she swayed across the road and crashed into the curb to stop the vehicle. the vehicle was damaged and taken to an authorized dealer for repairs. there were no warning indicators prior to this failure. the insurance company was notified of this incident. recently, the transmission failed at low mileage and has not yet been replaced. the vin was verified, but appears to be invalid. the failure mileage was 5,000 and current mileage was 31,000.

Electrical system - my car was parked for two days at a secure airport park and ride. when returning from my trip, when putting the car in reverse the car jerked and rolled out of the parking space. i then proceeded to put the car in drive and it failed to accelerate. the engine and transmission warning lights were illuminated, which put the car in limp mode. i had the car towed to the dealership. thankfully i was not in high traffic when this happened. if i was traveling at 60 mph and the car went into limp mode there could have been a serious accident. the dealer stated that it was a throttle positioning sensor failure and to correct the problem, the throttle housing would have to be replaced at a cost of $1600.00. the warranty had expired 3 months earlier. this car has less than 48,000 miles on it and is only driven in city traffic. this has to be a defect with this unit, especially since it failed while the car was parked without warning. this is definitely a safety issue. if this unit had failed on the interstate (i live in the metro atlanta area) it could have caused a major accident with possible injuries. *jb

On four separate occasions in the last five months, the car lost power and the power train warning light on the dash display came on. it appears to be related to the cruise control, since the failures occurred when engaging or re-engaging (after applying the brake or pressing on the accelerator) the cruise control. the failures seem to occur randomly and not every time the cruise control is used. the dealer has been unable to replicate the problem, but they have replaced the control computer and re-done a number of wiring harnesses. even though the problem has not been replicated, the failure history is captured in the car's on-board computer. *nlm
