Defect Summary | Certain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain ford, daimlerchrysler, and jeep passenger vehicles. these brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, carquest, bendix, and wagner. only products that were manufactured from july 27, 2005 through january 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. when subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Consequence Summary | Loss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective Summary | Affinia (brake parts, inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. the recall began on march 20, 2006. owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.
Notes | This recall only pertains to aftermarket napa, raybestos, ac delco, aimco, carquest, and bendix brake hydraulic master cylinders and has no relation to any original equipment installed on daimlerchrysler or ford vehicles.customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

Defect Summary | Vehicle description: passenger and multi-purpose vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the states of connecticut, illinois, indiana, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, or wisconsin, and the district of columbia. the front disc brake rotors can experience severe corrosion if operated for an extensive period in the salt belt. if the rotors are not replaced, the corrosion can eventually compromise the structural integrity of the stamped steel center hub section of the rotor.
Consequence Summary | The reduced strength can allow the cast iron wear surface to separate from the hub, reducing the brake effectiveness of the vehicle.
Corrective Summary | Dealers will replace these rotors with rotors that are coated with a corrosion protection.
Notes | Owner notification began june 5, 2000. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-992-1997.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236). |

I had the jeep dealer replace the front rotors on my 96 jeep cherokee country per the recall from chrysler. within 20k miles the rotors were severely warped, hot spotted and had small cracks in several places on both sides of each rotor. when they were turned, soft spots were revealed in the metal and both rotors - even when turned down all the way down to the minimum thickness. they were deemed unsalvageable and i had to get another new set less than a year after recall replacements were installed. the incident date is approximate. i will need to find the receipts to know the exact dates. ts

Rear brakes locked on at least 25 occasions. usually happens in first few minutes of driving, and when wet. brakes were repaired by dodge/jeep dealer 2 months ago still locked. checked by certified mechanic last week, could find nothing wrong. yesterday morning at about 9:00 a.m. during steady rain, applied brakes at 55 miles per hour to slow vehicle for car in front that had applied brakes. brakes locked and vehicle fish tailed to right, spun at least twice, tipped over and hit guard rail at least twice. i was extracted from vehicle with only minor cut to hand and glass in nostril. vehicle is totaled. earlier last year our 25 year old daughter applied brakes to slow down and similar incident happened, where she came to rest in a ditch. this has been a continuous problem. subsequent to accident yesterday, i talked with two other owners of same type vehicle who experience same problem on a regular basis. rear brakes lock, especially first thing in morning and when they are wet. certified automobile mechanic suggested a component that controls hydraulic fluid to all brakes equally could be the problem. would appreciate statistics on this problem if available, especially occurances where accidents resulted. dt

The water pump went out on way out of town. white smoke poured out from behind the jeep. we immediately pulled over and used our phone to call for help. we were told from a mechanic that it sounded as if the water pump went out. we waited for the jeep to cool off, then added water to the radiator. we were able to drive at 35 mph until we found a service station to pull over at. at that time the technician told us that it was indeed the water pump and there was no more that could be done that day (saturday-5:00p.m.). we got our vehicle towed back home to lafayette, la. the next morning and at that time the towing/service technician also said it looked as if the engine head gasket was blown. is that common for this vehicle with this milage? also, the brakes went out and we had them fixed a month ago at lafayette motors inc. could they have known about the water pump or is that impossible? also, was there supposed to be any warning as a check engine light? we got no warning, but the smoke pouring out. *ak( dot number: )

Last problem with rotors was in november 1999, 59,000 total miles. front rotors warped causing pulsation of brake pedal. reported the history of this problem to the chrysler customer service department, 1-800-992-1997. was told that based on my vehicle's vin # no recall was warranted. i know for a fact that other 1996 jeep cherokees have been recalled for this same reason and i find it appalling that all jeeps with rotor problems haven't been recalled yet. what is it going to take? a fatal accident, like the firestone ones, for something to be done. no vehicle should be experiencing the same problems with rotors every two years. i would appreciate if someone would contact me regarding this.*ak
