Radiator & various ac parts needed replacement. steering gave out in 2002. a screw went through an engine part. recently, a joint connecting the axel to the steering mechanism had to be replaced. fuel pump failed. incredibly, it is inside the gas tank. i have since learned that jeep gas tanks corrode on the inside, thus clogging the fuel pump. this is a very expensive repair because of the labor. there is still the possibility that this new fuel pump may also fail, because the gas tank was not replaced and the problem still exists. i\\\'ve heard numerous similar complaints regarding the fuel system from other jeep owners. there should have been a recall.

My vehicle ran out of gas in traffic while the gage still showed over 1/8th of a tank of fuel. i almost was run over by traffic when i got out of my car when it stopped with no warning. nhtsa has a recall on file for this exact problem but the dealer and manufacturer says it does not apply to my vehicle. the nstsa campaign number is 97v194000, manufacturer campaign number is 755. since they say my vehicle number is outside the range of this recall, they say i must pay for the repairs myself. i believe that this recall does not include all the vehicles affected and should be expanded to include all affected vehicles. *ak

Engine dies when making a turn with a 1/4 tank of gas or less. engine will run as long as you drive without making any sharp turns. have not run out of gas even when the gauge shows empty as long as you drive straight. contacted dealer to check for any recalls( spirit chrysler and jeep). the response was , a recall on defective fuel gauge only and would not cover my problem. also the service person told me this is very common problem and it is a weak fuel pump and it would cost $495.00 to replace. he also advised that most owners never let their gauge go below 1/2 because of this problem . i don't believe a weak fuel pump would cause this. it sounds like the fuel pickup is losing prime because of the lack of baffles in the tank to keep the fuel from moving. this sounds like it could be a very serious problem. i purchased this vehicle from my daughter and she advised me that this has been a problem for the last 30000 miles. been. *ak

First , this car was bought brand new with my ex-husband, nicolas jonville. we bought the car in october, 1997, from a jeep dealer in des plaines, illinois. it was a sales done through international autosource. we then brought the car out to california. since june, 2000, this car has expeienced o2 sensor problems, exhaust manifold crack, spring defective attached to right front shock, and fuel tank accuracy problem. i have a three year old child and drive this car just to take her to pre-sechool and shopping. i work out of the home. i believe the problems i have experienced in one years time are abundant. i don't drive daily into los angeles or san diego, california. i drive barely 20 miles a day. i do believe these problems do cause safetly problems for my daughter and myself. i have fears of stalling due to fuel problems. i have fears of hitting something that affect the spring on the highway and getting in a bad accident. i now have fears of driving the car long distances since the exhaust manifold crack caused me to eat too much gas. the car is only over three years old. i want some answers and will sending this information further with certified documentations of my letters, my reviews of mechanic views and the dealers documentation. the dealer has been non-supportive of fixing any of my problems without paying a high price when i believe these are manufacturer problesms.*ak

Initial fuel tank assembly failure 5/98 occurred at freeway speeds on highway overpass 680/24 walnut creek, ca. vehicle ran out of gas even though gauge indicated fuel level above 1/8 tank. created hazardous traffic backup for several miles on southbound interstate 680 requiring police assistance. subsequent problems with replacement fuel tank assemblies 3/29/99 and 8/30/99, currently unresolved. transmission failure affected drivability requiring replacement 8/30/99. began experiencing dangerous engine and electrical problems, including abrupt check engine light preceding engine bucking, severe engine surging, followed by loss of power, near stall at 35 mph, radio and power window failure 8/23/99, creating hazardous situation for vehicle occupants and other drivers on road. the fuel assembly fuse failure on 11/1/99 occurred at freeway speed in rush hour traffic on eastbound highway 4 in martinez near pacheco blvd. off-ramp with absolutely no warning. loss of engine, power steering, power brakes at this speed and traffic conditions created potential for fatal collision involving multiple vehicles. vehicle at lehmer's dealership from 11/1/99-11/5/99. dealership failed to duplicate, locate, or repair failure. vehicle released on 11/5/99. the second fuel system fuse failure occurred without warning on 11/6/99, on westbound ygnacio valley, a secondary 4 lane road at 45 mph speed, again creating a potentially hazardous situation. police called to prevent possible collisions while waiting for tow. due to these recurring and unresolved service problems we have lost all faith in the safety of this vehicle. we refuse to put our family or other drivers at risk and wish to file a formal complaint with the nhtsa and to pursue resolution of this matter under the lemon law. we purchased this vehicle in good faith, but cannot in good conscience sell it or trade it in due to the potential for loss of life in its current condition.

Engine dies when making a turn with a 1/4 tank of gas or less. engine will run as long as you drive without making any sharp turns. have not run out of gas even when the gauge shows empty as long as you drive straight. contacted dealer to check for any recalls( spirit chrysler and jeep). the response was , a recall on defective fuel gauge only and would not cover my problem. also the service person told me this is very common problem and it is a weak fuel pump and it would cost $495.00 to replace. he also advised that most owners never let their gauge go below 1/2 because of this problem . i don't believe a weak fuel pump would cause this. it sounds like the fuel pickup is losing prime because of the lack of baffles in the tank to keep the fuel from moving. this sounds like it could be a very serious problem. i purchased this vehicle from my daughter and she advised me that this has been a problem for the last 30000 miles. been. *ak
