Defect SummaryCertain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain ford, daimlerchrysler, and jeep passenger vehicles. these brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, carquest, bendix, and wagner. only products that were manufactured from july 27, 2005 through january 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. when subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Consequence SummaryLoss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryAffinia (brake parts, inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. the recall began on march 20, 2006. owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.
NotesThis recall only pertains to aftermarket napa, raybestos, ac delco, aimco, carquest, and bendix brake hydraulic master cylinders and has no relation to any original equipment installed on daimlerchrysler or ford vehicles.customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.

Consequence SummaryThe reduced strength can allow the cast iron wear surface to separate from the hub, reducing the brake effectiveness of the vehicle.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace these rotors with rotors that are coated with a corrosion protection.
NotesOwner notification began june 5, 2000. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-992-1997.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

 Problem with brake rotors.

Driver's side seat frame broke. seat wobbles back and forth. obviously an unsafe situation being strapped into a seat that is not properly secured to vehicle. will force of pushing brake pedal totally separate seat from vehicle? this is a major safety issue relative to passenger restraint (me) and braking or stopping of the vehicle(others). i have read where this is a common occurance on jeeps of the same model and year as mine. clearly, this is a manufacturing defect. i have never had a seat frame fail on any other vehicle that i have operated. this is not rust related. it is simply a failed vehicle weight reduction program that has blossomed into a full blown safety concern for both those in the vehicle and anyone else outside of the vehicle in its general proximity. something needs to be done as vehicle owners will continue to operate these vehicles until the seat totally severs its compromised mounting and becomes totally detached from the vehicle. in the mean time, anyone in its path is at serious risk.

My brakes fused together, and i had to down shift quickly in order to stop. the auto repair shop said it was caused by faulty brake knuckles, and that jeep is aware of the issue, but does not feel it is a safety issue. my children were in the car, and it's not a safety issue? *nm

Sunroof: in the full open position, between 30 & 50mph, with the side windows up, or partially open, a horriffic vibration is felt in the cabin which is irritating to the ears, vocal chords, is so bad, that the radio speakers seem like they are ready to break. dealer refuses to arrange a meeting with chrysler rep to discuss the problem, which i feel is attributed to a bad design, which jeep is calling wind buffeting in the owners manual, indicating they know there is this problem. the starter failed, and rocking the vehicle to a better spot on the starter allowed it to start, but vehicle is still sluggish starting at times, seeming as though the batter is weak. jeep will not replace starter until a total failure. brakes.. bad vibration due to apparent warped rotors. these are being replaced on warranty without dispute, indicating that chrysler knows there is a problem with the rotors. this vehicle seems to be the lemon of the fleet only giving a maximum of 14.5mpg, highway, and less in city only, and does not idle smooth. *ak

As in the technical bulletin the brakes are very poor and pulsating. at 12000 to 14000 the first time, if you are going xway speed and tried to stop the car vibrated very bad. i took the car in and they said there was a bulletin to replace the rotors. that was done, the car was ok until another 12000 miles. same problem. the dealer replaced the rotors again. as a good customer benifit i know i will have to go thru this again. after 2000 miles the brakes are pulsing again. i have a '97 passport with 75000 miles and still have the origonal brakes. this is my wifes , there is no hi speed starting and stopping. i think this will be a safty problem in the future or at least an expensive one every 12000 to 14000 miles. *ak

A day after a good rain when vehicle is first in motion (even in dry driving conditions) even at 5mph any pressure on the brake pedal results in the brakes locking up. i have consulted with the dealer and various mechanics and they think a film of rust is building on the discs, and said i must warm the brakes up? this doesn't seem like a logical answer, why should one have to warm the brakes. is this a design flaw? *ak

At 12,000 miles i noticed a slight vibration in the front of the vehicle, i called the dealer, but decided not to follow up and bring it in at that time. in mid may, i was traveling on the ma tpke, and upon braking noticed a pronounced vibration in the fron end of the vehicle. my dealer, who is very reliable, took the vehicle and found the front rotors and rear drums warped. at first they informed me that chrysler had chnged rotors without notifying them. upon their further examination they found that my jeep had the old parts and they replaced the rotors and drums. at 17,300 miles i noticed the same vibration in the front end when braking on i84 in ct. the dealer again inspected the rotors and found that they were defective. this time they will turn the rotors on the vehicle with chrysler's okay. while the work is under warranty i question whether this will be a permanent solution to the problem. my complaint is no way to be construed as against the dealer, in fact the dealer encouraged me to contact chrysler customer service, which i did. i have been informed by chrysler that a technical bulletin is out concerning the disc brake problem. i have seen complaints on the nhtsa site, of minor pulsation in the disc brakes, the pulsation on my vehicle was very pronounced and in fact the vehicle was shaking. i question if a recall is in order. thank you. *ak
