Defect SummaryCertain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain ford, daimlerchrysler, and jeep passenger vehicles. these brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, carquest, bendix, and wagner. only products that were manufactured from july 27, 2005 through january 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. when subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.
Consequence SummaryLoss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryAffinia (brake parts, inc.) will replace the subject brake hydraulic master cylinders free of charge. the recall began on march 20, 2006. owners can contact affina group customer service at 1-800-323-0354.

Tl-the contact owns a 2000 jeep cherokee sport. the contact stated that whenever there was moisture in the air, the brakes would grab and jolt the vehicle. the vehicle would come to a sudden stop; she felt that she would hit the windshield if she did not have a seatbelt on. she noticed the failure every time there was moisture. the vehicle had not been inspected or repaired at the time of the complaint. the contact called the manufacturer who referred her to nhtsa. the current mileage was approximately 126,000. the failure mileage was approximately 124,00-bk

Bought vehicle new and performed regular maintenance. had to replace brake rotors at 62,000. at 78,000 miles engine overheated; verified fan, radiator, and water pump in working order and replaced thermostat and temperature sensor. engine continued to overheat with unexplained coolant loss. no leakage and clean oil. replaced head gasket anyway and noticed no cracks in head. still runs hot and loses coolant somehow. at 80,000 miles engine developed miss after replacing coil and checking fuel and firing systems removed head again and pulled lifters. bottom of one lifter was ground off resulting in some wear of cam lobe. replaced lifters and valve springs. fixed engine miss. at 82,000 miles oil gauge showed 80 pounds of oil pressure until engine totally warm then dropped to 40 lbs. also showed 40 lbs when keyed moved to on position with engine not running. replaced oil pressure sending unit. now engine runs 40-45 lbs when cold and drops to 10 lbs when running after totally warm. when stopping at lights after driving with warm engine, oil pressure drops to 0 and check gauges light comes on. purchased a high volume oil pump and will see if this corrects that problem. this is totally unacceptable for a vehicle with 83,000 miles that was purchased new and well maintained. furthermore when checking with other owners these problems and more seem to be common for this year/model. *tr

Severe brake problems with 2000 jeep cherokee. *mr there was an ongoing braking problem and difficulty diagnosing the problem. the problem was thought to be the rotors which were cut and replaced (the front pads). the problem still continued. then the front rotors were diagnosed as being warped and the brakes were 50% worn. there was a tapping noise in the shifting area as well as a rubbing noise in the steering column that comes and goes. (unable to diagnose) the vehicle had been diagnose as the rear brake drums being out of round. the water pump leaked and was replaced along with the thermostat. the comsumer requested a refund *scc *jb

There appears to be defective braking systems on many of the jeep cherokee models. i own a 2000 jeep cherokee limited and had to replace the rotors and pads on it twice before 25,000 miles. the brakes pulsate and when sitting at a street light with the brake depressed, it feels as if someone has hit me in the rear end. the vehicle moves while the brake is depressed. i have read all over the internet regarding these same issues and daimler-chrysler doesn't want to admit there is defective equipment on their jeeps. *jb

Design flaw in degradation of the seals on the drum of the vehicle's anti-lock braking system.*mr this allowed more moisture into the drums, causing unpredictable locking of the vehicle's rear brakes. such locking could cause driver to lose control. consumer made many attempts to find a resolution with jeep and local dealerships and the customer service division, to no avail. the dealerships admitted the problem was endemic to the design and replacing the brakes wouldn't eliminate the problem- it would come back in time. they admitted it's an inherent feature, but stated they have no plans to attempt to rectify it. other than the brake problem, the consumer was pleased with the purchase. *ph *jb

2000 cherokee sport - 20626 miles. i initially had issues with the steering dampner which was causing vibration in the front end. after that was fixed everything was fine for a few months, then the front end started shaking when braking.....worse when going down hill. service says this is not normal, but it has been seen before. i called chrysler and spoke with matt. explained the situation and was told there was nothing they could do since it was beyond the 12/12000 warranty for brakes. decided to do a little research and found that jeep has had serious issues with brakes on the cherokee for years now. there are occassional re-calls, but not on the 2000 cherokee! why can we not get help from from the nhtsa in forcing chrsler to recall these dangerous vehicles?*ak

I had been involved in an accident on 7-4-01 due to brakes failing to even slow jeep. on 8-6-01 i met w/ district service manager, frank teliofario at martin jeep so he could look at the jeep. he test drove it for 2 miles, pulled the wheels and said there was nothing wrong with the jeep. he stated that he thought my problem was that it didn't have abs brakes as i'd been told. i told him no, my problem was the brakes didn't work sometimes! an hour and a half later, i stepped on the brakes for a yellow light and heard a screeching as if working on a metal lathe and bringing the cutting tool too deep, and the whole jeep shook, felt like it was going to fall apart. i was hoping i would slow down before i went through the now-red light. i did stop but didn't know what had happened. i checked rear-view mirror and also turned around at next opportunity. no skid marks. it was not the tires as the dist mgr had suggested. i called him *still at the dealership* and he said he would check into some things and call me back today or tomorrow. i have never heard from him again. hired a lawyer, now my insurance company notified me to not drive the jeep as it's not safe, and im awaiting their specialist to come look at the jeep. it is parked and i am driving another vehicle. i will not trade it in because i don't want someone to be killed due to whatever this problem is that chrysler is refusing to acknowledge. if what they stated was true and there was no problem, then i would have no problems with stopping of this jeep. each time they tell me there is no problem, the problem occurs again. they have a serious problem w/ these jeeps. when i took jeep in to get repaired from accident on 7-4-01 auto body shop owner said he's had at least 4 other cherokees identical to mine in his shop for repairs of the same problem. what is wrong with these jeeps? why is chrysler refusing to fix this problem?*ak

Heavy duty front rotors...non component style....built to run mail routes..right hand drive. front brakes continually overheating causing rotors to have to be turned every 3 to 6 thousand miles. front brakes getting so hot...rotors turning blue. now with a brand new set of rotors and new pad on front..new shoes and turned rotors on back...after only 30 minutes of running..overheated..blued rotors and brakes faded..completely away. vehicle would not stop. back brake do not appear to be holding at all. only one set of back pads needed in 26,ooo miles while 4 sets of front pads worn out or broken from overheating of rotors. first set of rotors replaced after turning 2 times..they warped causing shimmy in front end on braking. this vehicle has never had good brakes. pedal has felt mushy from day one and very hard pressure must be applied to pedal in order to come to a complete stop. dealership has already replace one master cylinder and i just had another one installed. don't know where the problem is...but when vehicle is up on stands in rear..and placed in gear..back wheels continue to roll when brakes are applied. seems that there is not nearly enough pressure being sent to back brakes. vehicle seems to be relying solely on front brakes. all lines have been checked..and wheel cylinders and calipers are okay. dealership says...no recalls or problems from other customers. i can see from reading this forum...that is not true! please help! i don't want to wreck when my brakes fail and possibly injure myself, grandkids, or someone else. especially don't want to wreck on the mail route. the post office might just frown on that...especially since jeep is very much aware that they have a problem but still insist that there is none! help!!!!*ak

When it rains brakes become defective and it is harder to slow down, and feel like they don't catch immediately. i have had a car crash due to faulty brakes. i reported this problem to the manufacturer and they are not willing to do anything. since purchasing this jeep i have had it repaired or looked at by 3 different dealerships and one goodyear dealership, 6 times in the first six months in attempts to get the various problems corrected. my main concern was and is the brakes. in dry weather they vibrate, pull and cause the whole front end to shake. in wet weather and snow they do not always catch right away and also i feel a thumping on the brake pedal and also a thumping noise when they are applied, as if something is broken inside. on july 4 after a heavy thunderstorm the person ahead of me failed to turn and i slammed on the brakes. at about 30 feet i realized that my jeep wasn't slowing down, and because the dealership that sold me the jeep said i had antilock brakes, i stood on them, knowing that you shouldn't pump abs brakes. i hit the car in front of me, damaging my jeep but not the other car. i have reported this to chrysler, and yesterday (7/13/01) met with their independent special investigator, who test drove the jeep in dry weather. he stated that there is nothing wrong with the brakes, but that i have rear-wheel drive and do not have abs brakes. i checked with my insurance company and the dealership reported to them, the day i purchased the car that i had antilock brakes. chrysler has been totally unresponsive, and does not seem to care that this vehicle if not for the slow speed could have already resulted in major injuries or death. they say this vehicle is safe but the brakes have *already* failed in one accident, how do they conclude this vehicle is safe when none of their representatives have ever driven it in wet weather, except the one dealership that *did* find a problem with the brakes. *ak

Severe vibration was experienced when applying brakes at speeds greater than 45 mph. at less than 7,000 miles the problem was diagnosed as brake run out by the dealer. it appears as if the braking systems are defective on the 2000 jeep cherokee (this is not a grand cherokee model). i believe the use of composite brake rotors is causing the rotors to warp under normal use. this is a serious safety concern and must be addressed immediately by daimler-chrysler corporation.*ak

2000 jeep cherokee engine stopped without warning.***no answer required***. *mr there was a hole in the piston. after the dealer inspected the vehicle, they stated there was not enough coolant in the system which caused the front frost plug heater to come out and that the no 1 and 2 piston melted down. the consumer had to replace the engine with only 42,000 miles on the vehicle. the rotors were replaced twice. the rubber around all four doors shrunk to the point that wind and water would come through. periodically, when the vehicle was locked the headlights and taillights would come on and go off for a few minutes. the chrome on the wheels was corroded and coming off. the front passenger electric lock was making a strange noise when the doors were lock or unlocked. *jb

My 2000 jeep cherokee was purchased new in 2000. since then, my front brakes and rotors have had to be replaced every 7000 miles. the dealer replaced them at 7000 miles and after that refused. said it was normal wear and tear after 10,000 miles and not under warranty. said it was because i drive my vehicle for work (post office) and stop a lot. there are 35 pages of complaints on the internet stating exactly the same problem at every 7000 miles and 54 complaints on your site with the same problem. when the rotors warp, the car is very difficult to stop safely at 40 to 55 mph. apparently, chrysler has had this complaint since 1998 thru 2003. why hasn't there been a recall? a safety violation?*jb

At speeds of 50 to 60 miles an hour while braking or if a bump is hit in the road, front tire vibration occurs and will only stop when speed is lowered to below 40 mph. after typing in jeep cherokee front end vibration on internet search did i find that this problem is present in all cherokees. it seems that the problem stems from the brake calipers warping the rotors every 8-10 thousand miles. this is ridiculous and is a safety issue. this vibration moves the steering side to side violently. *jb

I had to replace my front rotors at 35,000 - chrysler said it's normal wear and tear and wouldn't fix them. there was a problem with a seal on the gas tank. i brought it in for service at least 4 or 5 times before it was fixed. a $2.00 wire broke inside the front door for the front speaker at 43,000 miles and they charged me $200.00 to fix it. the salesman sold me a convenience package that was purported as an extended warranty, but was actually a towing and rental car package. *ak

Since we have owned this jeep, we have experienced chronic problems with the front tire wheel balance and rotor system on the front end of this vehicle. the problem started shortly after we took ownership of in october, 2000 when the truck had 1743 miles. brakes pulsated and it was determined that rotors were warped. first set up replacement rotors from dealership using chrysler parts june 26, 2001. problem occurred again december, 2001 when vehicle had 28,887 miles on it. dealership offered to resurface rotors as they were warped. refused to replace them even though they were defective and still under warrantee. took vehicle to a third party mechanic and paid to have installed after market rotors to address pulsating brakes and issue that when pulsating brakes were applied on highway, vehicle pulled sharply to the left. defective rotors - recall is necessary to prevent future serious injury to those operating vehicle with original rotors.*ak*jg

At 7,000 miles, the vehicle would shake violently and the brake pedal would pulsate excessively when the brakes were applied at highway speeds of 40+ mph, especially downhill. took to dealership and they were able to replicate condition. dealership explained that shaking and pulsations were due to defective rotors which had warped from excessive heat - not due to emergency braking, but just normal use. dealership replaced rotors and pads without cost to customer. unfortunately, the same problem arose soon after my first anniversay with the vehicle at about 17,500 miles. took to same dealership and they diagnosed the same problem (rotor warping due to overheating - not from abusive braking, but from normal braking by customer). they repaired the problem by resurfacing front rotors and replacing front pads without cost to the customer (excellent service department). my concern is that the service department rep stated that the same problem would come up again after about 8-10,000 miles because the rotors and braking system are defective from the manufacturer. he stated that jeep and the federal government have to bump heads before this problem is permanently corrected. please make jeep acknowledge and correct this serious problem before someone is killed or seriously injured. jeep needs to stand behind its product if it wishes to maintain its rather good reputation. if not, jeep will lose its customer base and will eventually go the way of the dodo bird. the other problem i have experienced is the malfunctioning of the my rear trunk door lock. it gets stuck quite often, such that i cannot disengage the lock to open the trunk. i must lock and reopen the vehicle's locks (with the remote control) to get the rear hood lock to work properly. otherwise, my 2000 jeep cherokee is quite satisfactory. however, i worry about my out-of-pocket expenses once my warranty expires. can you investigate these problems and try to get jeep to commit to a recall?*ak

The jeep started shaking when the brakes were applied at speeds of 40 mph and up at mileage of 950 miles. called dealership and was told this was normal that the brakes needed to break in. claimed that it was safe to drive. i in turn, continued to use the jeep but the problem never seemed to clear up. at about 19825 miles i was traveling on the highway with my wife and two children and i was forced to apply my brakes in an emergency situation, and instead of coming to a safe stop jeep shocked violently and pulled to the right, almost hitting the car besides me .it was a very close call for me and my family. as soon as possible i took my jeep to the dealer to have them check .the problem they told me that rotors needed to be resurfaced, and it would cost approximately 117 dollars and not covered under my warranty which is bumper to bumper 360000 miles or 36 months. i told the dealer i would take the jeep to my mechanic and have them do the work even though i would think they shoud of took care of it at the dealer under the warranty . i told my mechanic the problem i had with the jeep, and he informed me that he encountered sevral jeeps with the same problem. he informed me that the rotors on the newwer jeeps were defective, and he explained to me that the rotors are made out of composite metals and even if you resuface them they will warp out of round again, and i would have the same problem. in turn, he couldnt guarante that it wouldnt happen again. he told me4 the only way to fix the problem was to put to new rotors on at the price of 450.00 . i called the dealer and talked to the service manager ron matz and then the genral manager brett adams and they insisted they could not do any thing for me.im hoping you can help me out. *ak
