My jeep first started to shake violently when i was exiting onto an off-ramp. i pulled off the road; it was awful. i took it to a repair shop and they could not find anything wrong as the issue did not occur again right away. however, as time went on it did. it now happens rather frequently and it is terrifying every time. i have to get it repaired (new track bar) before something tragic happens. please help! this is a known issue and yet no recall has been issued yet. by the time one is, due to accidents, i will hopefully have mine fixed. therefore, this complaint is my plea on behalf of other jeep owners. when this happens, it honestly feels like the front wheels will likely fly off; it's rather disturbing for those in the vehicle and those driving nearby in other vehicles.

I have a 200 jeep cherokee sport, 4wd. i also had a 1996 jeep cherokee sport, 4wd. both have the same 2 problems. #1 is a broken drivers seat. the bracket is too small and splits near the bolt holes. you can't drive like this, the current one (2000) started with a small noise when i was exiting the car. the next day it let loose on a bumpy road on a corner. i didn't think much of it the first time with the 1996, which i traded for the 2000, but since it has happened again, i did some research and it is a common problem. i stumbled onto this site: http://vlane.com/poll/30/2001-jeep-grand-cherokee-has-your-driver-side-front-seat-broken-on-this-jeep problem #2, and more serious is a huge wobble, shimmy, shake problem at around 50 mph. so much so that you feel as if the car is going to be thrown off the road or flip. also this problem developed on my 96 jeep before i traded it for this one, and now has started on this 200 jeep, so again seeing a pattern, i did more research and found more people with this problem. here is just one site: http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0e6f51/0 please help! these are safety issues not to mention possible design flaws that are costly to repair. thank you. *tr

Since the first day of ownership of new jeep cherokee 10/3/1999, there has been a grinding sound coming from the 4-wheel drive transfer case. selling dealer replaced transfer case lubricant. mechanic said chrysler used substandard lubricant. grinding continued. repeated attempts for selling dealer (begnal motors) to fix were not successful. differential replaced at 9585 miles by sawyer motors in saugerties new york. metal shavings found in transfer case. warping in gear bolt holes. dealer said transfer case should be pristine at 9,000 miles. grinding returned at 13,000. worse on deceleration and during rain. jeep zone rep. says chrysler is aware of the problem. doesn't know how to fix it. even said problem is normal. this exact problem reported several times by ntsha in 1999 model. on 6/19/2000 chrysler rep. wants to replace entire transfer case. value of vehicle has been reduced. will lose 5,000 if i sell now. unsure of safety issues. chrysler customer support is shameful. they have lost records of my calls. however, chrysler rep explained if 4-wheel drive lever is placed in the wrong position, damage can occur. sawyer motors owner bob siracasano says he drove another 2000 model that didn't make the sound. zone rep. peter hewitt says he cannot guarantee that once the transfer case is replaced, the sound will not go away. this unacceptable. this is a defect. do you agree? i have had a loaner car for 21 days. i spent $24,000 and now know chrysler has a trackrecord of using poor quality parts, bad customer support and uncooperative dealerships. consumers need the nhtsa to stand up for us! please investigate. thank you.*ak

At speeds between 50mph and 60mph, front end of vehicle and steeling wheel shakes violently. have changed tires, brakes, had tires balanced, and front end aligned. the cause is thought to suspension or bearing according to all mechanics that look and drive it. no one knows for sure, only that the mechanics say that this year cherokee, is known for this, and they have all said there is no known investigation about this danger in progress. from what i have read at this site alone, i am curious as to why there is no investigation regarding this problem with the front end...

2000 jeep cherokee: this vehicle has had ongoing front end vibrations/woobling since 3000 miles. has been in for service several times however problem has never been resolved! stablizer bar has been replaced, tires have been rotated, new tires have been put on from new jeep on lot and same problem existed as with old tires. i would like to know why chyrsler seems to be ignoring this problem? there are several complaints similar to this so they must be fully aware of this existing problem. i can not drive the posted dot speed limit of 55 mph as the jeep is not safe to drive at that speed! i would like this problem resolved before my warranty expires at 36,000 miles, as i do not wish to pay for something that chrylser should be held accountable for! i request that nhtsa investigates this problem as this is a manufacturer defect!*ak

Vehicle has a wobble in the front end at speeds from 51mph up. the following components have been replaced and the problem still exists. front stabilizer shock, all four tires (twice) all four rims-wheels, both axles, and numerous attempts to correctly align the tires. the problem developed immediately upon purchase and was serviced within one week of delivery. i moved last year and the jeep dealer in staunton, va. stated that the jeep engineers are aware of the problem and are trying to figure it out. this is the same thing i was told almost one year ago and they still don't know what the problem is. i attempted to handle this through arbitration, however, as i travel a lot, jeep told me my vehicle was out of the original factory warrenty and even though i purchased the six-year, 100,000 mile extended warranty, they denied any claim i may have against jeep. i am concerned that the continuous wobbling will not only speed up tire wear, but other components may vibrate loose.*ak

Jeep acelerated on its own causing me to have to stand on the brakes(thinking i had abs) brakes did not work correctly, causing me to hit the back of a 4x4 truck at the speed of about 15 mph all bumper parts had to be replaced as did many other parts air bags did not go off. today i took the jeep back to dealer for the 4th time to try to get thing taken care of .on the 1st trip i was told that my abs breaks were working fine and that the mechanic felt them kick in. took it back a week later because break peddle dropped to the floor, again i was told that all breaks were fine and that the abs were working. on 5/29/01 my husband took jeep in and test drove it w/ service manager and they decided the abs was not working at all. and then we were told that we did not have abs ( salesmen told us the jeep had abs). the front end now shakes at about 45-55 when going around curves and sometimes when making turns at lower speed. when jchrysler was contacted they tried to blame everything on me. it was my fault that i didn't check to see if the jeep had abs( who would have thought that it wouldn't have them and we did ask to make sure and we were told yes it had them) and it was also my fault that an inspector did not come out to inspect the jeep after the crash because i did not request one to although no one told me that one could come out i am supose to be able to find this information out on my own. as of today the jeep is in for service again 3rd time for brake service 2nd time for front end vibrations and 2nd time to have them fix all the things they didn't do right the 1st time. *ak

When the vehicle was delivered it pulled dangerously to the right. the vehicle was changed to a right hand drive by chrysler for post office delivery use before delivery to the owner. it was driven 249 miles by anb employee of the dealer before delivery. the problem should have been aparent to them at that time. the dealer has snt the vehicle out for alignment three times to attempt alignment. they have not been able to get it properly aligned. the dealer will try to get it aligned again, but they will not do any work on the vehicle to really fix the problem. the dealer sent the owner out to get new tires, but they would not pay for them. the vehicle is still out of alignment and it does not steer properly. the dealer does not want to take any more action to fix it. the daeler claims that chrysler is nonresponsive to the problem. *ak

SUSPENSION - FRONT - CONTROL ARM
02/04/2004150507/26/2000
I had several trips to the dealership with the jeep. i purchased the jeep on july 26, 2000 new. i took excellent care of the vehicle, have it checked and oil changed every 2500 miles. before the three year warranty was up i had a total of 15,000 miles on it. i complained of it shimmying and grinding sound in the back, but they said they couldn't find a thing wrong. in february having about $18,000 miles on it that i needed a new fuel pump - $900.00 worth. since then it has been down hill. i have complained since day one that my vehicle shimmies out of control intermittently, and no one could find anything wrong, just put new control arms and bushings on it and, steering pinion, tight steering, and a host of other such remedies, to no avail. this past weekend, i was almost in a very serious accident on highway 94, as i did go out of town, after the above was fixed, but apparently it didn't help as my vehicle shook almost out of control again. i put on my breaks immediately and had to go to the side of the road. i stopped, sat for a while, and then drove off, and it was okay for a while, but in the meantime, a driver from behind almost hit me when i had to put my breaks on to try to control it some. i am very frustrated with this vehicle and feel it should have been called back when i first complained years ago. i wrote daimler chrysler a letter regarding the fuel pump a few years ago, but the company didn't even respond. in the meantime, i really don't know what to do, i want to trade it in, but feel i was sold a real lemon and should be compensated for the hassles, repair costs, etc. of what i was hoping would not happen when buying a new vehicle, and the way i take care of it. i cannot afford to buy another brand new one, but do feel the company should have called this vehicle back from the onset, as it has been a lemon, of which i have expressed many times to the dealership where i purchased it. *ak

Repeated passenger balljoint failure on 2000 jeep cherokee sport. according to multiple sources including owners and jeep dealer repair staff, this is a regular and repeated problem in 1999 and 2000 model year cherokees equipped with the 4.0l engine and part time 4 wheel drive. balljoint originally replaced at 10,950 miles under warranty (replacing dealer ira jeep, no cost.). balljoint has failed again. have been unable to get a weekend appointment at dealer. symptoms of failure coincide with reports on file with the nhtsa - steering wheel and/or front end 'shimmy' or vibration at highway speeds, pulling or pushing left or right under acceleration, difficulty in making left or right turns (lack of feedback from wheels, car attempts to pull opposite direction). i would respectfully request on the behalf of all jeep owners (this is a 4 hour repair, requiring the vehicle to typically remain at the dealer for one full day) that the nhtsa further investigate these failures, as i suspect a manufacturing defect. these failures are, in my opinion, dangerous and can become life threatening should the balljoint(s) catastrophically fail. daimler-chrysler/jeep have been excellent in reguards to repairing these problems, but these are problems that leave customers without their car for a minimum of several hours, and are easy to ignore for most consumers. thank you.*ak
