ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
EA07007CHRYSLER GROUP LLC04/27/200705/07/2008ENGINE STALLING08V203000
On may 5, 2008, chrysler llc (chrysler) submitted a defect information report to nhtsa concerning an engine calibration issue that could result in engine stall in approximately 24,461 model year (my) 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with the 4.7l v-8 engine and built from february 25, 2005 through january 11, 2006.according to chrysler, the powertrain control module (pcm) was programmed with software that may allow the engine to stall during certain operating conditions.chrysler dealers will reprogram the pcm software in the recalled vehicles. information provided by chrysler during pe07-009 and ea07-007 indicated that a revised engine calibration was implemented in production effective january 12, 2006 for the my 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 4.7l v-8 engines.odi's analysis ofconsumer complaints, field reports and other data related to field experience with engine stalling in my 2006 through 2007 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 3.7l, 4.7l and 5.7l engines identified an elevated rate of stalling incidents in the my 2006 vehicles equipped with 4.7l engines that were manufactured before the calibration change.odi interviewed over 70 consumers who reported stalling incidents in early production my 2006 4.7l vehicles.information gathered from those interviews indicated that the stalling incidents were occurring at various speeds, often occurred during turns and typically occurred more than once.the interviews did not identify any concerns with restartability. although the early my 2006 production vehicles with 4.7l engines make up only about 15 percent of all my 2006 through 2007 jeep commanders built by chrysler, they were responsible for 465 of the 854 reported stalling incidents (54%), 6 of the 12 crash incidents (50%) and the only injury claim.the stalling rate for the recalled vehicles is 1.90 percent, almost 7 times greater than the rate in the remaining population (0.28 percent).chrysler's recall covers the vehicles with the elevated stalling rate.the remaining vehicles have relatively low rates of stalling and do not exhibit any signs of aggravating factors such as problems with restart. odi also analyzed complaints alleging concerns with loss of lighting coincident to stalling incidents.this analysis identified seven stalling incidents where loss of exterior lighting was alleged.no specific cause was identified in these incidents and there was no discernible pattern regarding engine, vehicle production options, build range or failure trend. this investigation is closed with chrysler's recall.

The vehicle stalled while we were driving down the road. there wasn't any jerking feeling it simply shut off. we had started to slow for an upcoming traffic light. this is the second time this has happened. the first time we were backing up into the road and it stalled.

My jeep stalled as i accellerated on the on ramp of a major interstate. i coasted to the shoulder and tried to restart and would not restart until i shut it completely off and restarted. it ran with the check engine light on and the cruise control inopertable. idle was rough at low and higher rpm's. after about six restarts throughout the day the check engine light went out but the cruise control is still inopertable. one week later it stalled at idle during cold weather warm up with the same results following as before. the vehicle was purchased used from a dealer less than a week prior to the incident with 84,879 mi. a background check through autocheck was conducted prior to purchase with no major finding reported on this specific vehicle. from investigations through multible websites, this issue is common with this vehicle for several years. i have check the recall reports by vin # and this vehicle does not fall in the production catagory of manufacture recall but has the exact same symtoms for a recall. this is a major safety concern if the vehicle stalls on a rural highway with no shoulder to safely pullover. *tr

Approx 2 miles from work - making a right hand turn at a light. hazards on - taking precaution... car behind me. once i make the turn my car completely shuts off again. no brakes not steering - nothing... my car just happened to coast to the right as it is.... car behind missed me by an inch of slamming into me. waited a good 1/2 hour - my husband came and drove it the rest of the way to the work parking lot. i called jeep in lugoff sc and like every other dealership out there - they have no memory of hearing of any 2006 - 2007 jeep commander problems. i have called chyrsler care 8009921997 - dealerships... they all make me out to be crazy. i am going to report them to the bbb as well. i have 3 children - 9,8, and 20 mths old. chrysler must be waiting for someone to get killed.... i normally take the hwy to work - but today for some reason i decided to head to work on a back road. .... i can not believe with all the issues and complaints i have read about this same problem - that it is even legal to sell this car used,... *tr

Started the car at the house and drove 1 mile to the gas station. shut the car off to fill the tank. tried to restart and it would not start until i pushed the gas in. when it started smoke poured out the back. took it across the street to a mechanic and they said the engine was trashed. had the car towed to the jeep dealer where i bought it. they said the same thing that the motor was trashed. i paid the dodge dealer to tear down the engine so i could know what happened. they informed me that the valve in the 4th cylinder had slipped down into the motor and destroyed the piston and cylinder wall. have to have a new engine installed. the vehicle is a 2006 jeep commander with the 5.7 hemi and only has 77,000 miles on it and from what i have researched and talking to mechanics this is a problem that should never happen. this part should not fail in this manor. have gotten no response from chrysler and am taking on the cost of the repair myself. if i was hard on the motor it would be one thing but it was only driven to work by my wife. we only put maybe 20,000 mile on it since we bought it. i am aware that this problem has occurred in other vehicles and who knows how many were repaired by chrysler, under warranty. i will be into this vehicle about 40,000 dollars after the new engine is installed and i think chrysler bares part of the blame and should be held accountable. thank you for your time in considering this matter. *tr

Started the car at the house and drove 1 mile to the gas station. shut the car off to fill the tank. tried to restart and it would not start until i pushed the gas in. when it started smoke poured out the back. took it across the street to a mechanic and they said the engine was trashed. had the car towed to the jeep dealer where i bought it. they said the same thing that the motor was trashed. i paid the dodge dealer to tear down the engine so i could know what happend. they informed me that the valve in the 4th cyclinder had slipped down into the motor and destroyed the piston and cylinder wall. have to have a new engine installed. the vehicle is a 2006 jeep commander with the 5.7 hemi and only has 77,000 miles on it and from what i have researched and talking to mechanics this is a problem that should never happen. this part should not fail in this manor. have gotten no response from chrysler and am taking on the cost of the repair myself. if i was hard on the motor it would be one thing but it was only driven to work by my wife. we only put maybe 20,000 mile on it since we bought it. i am aware that this problem has occured in other vehicles and who nows how many were repaired by chrysler, under warranty. i will be into this vehile about 40,000 dollars after the new engine is installed and i think chrysler bares part of the blame and should be held accountable. thank you for your time in considering this matter.

The problem began initially in 4/2010 when the vehicle had 53,165 miles on it and the engine would idle roughly, the esp/bas indicator would come on, the check engine light would come on, and the traction assist indicator would all come on at the same time. as soon as all the indicators would light the car would handle poorly, not shift properly, and at times simply stall out on the highway while traveling at high speeds. i brought the car to my local jeep dealership and upon inspection they found that the intake manifold had melted and come apart thus it needed to be replaced at a cost of $485 which was fine considering the car overall had not given me many major problems so i proceeded to have the work done. a couple of weeks ago the same problems began happening again (the engine would idle roughly, the esp/bas indicator would come on, the check engine light would come on, and the traction assist indicator would all come on at the same time) so i brought the car back to the same dealership and upon inspection they found that once again the intake manifold had melted and come apart thus it needed to be replaced at a cost this time of $685, mind you the car now has 96,057 miles. my main concern is that the intake manifold lasted only 42,901 miles and had to be replaced once again. i voiced my concerns to my service advisor and he stated that the first time the upper manifold had gone bad and that this time the lower manifold had gone bad, that may very well be the case but if you look at the invoices the part numbers are exactly the same (53032774aa). i understand that the dealership can only do so much so i am now appealing to you as it seems that the intake manifold for my 2006 jeep commander has a factory defect as it literally melts and begins to come apart especially with the extremely hot weather in south florida every 40,000 miles or so. *tr

Engine stalling! hi, my 2006 jeep commander with 71k on it has been stalling a lot lately and the engine light goes on. it starts right away but the engine light stays on. i took it to my dealership & they reprogrammed the computer, but less than 50 miles later it stalled again. this happens on the highway where i would lose power and find it hard to control the car. i know that a lot of owners complain about the same issue and the dealerships seem to be puzzled by it as well. jeep has to find a solution to this before someone gets in an accident. jeep should also cover the costs associated with the several service costs. i've sent the same to jeep/chrysler corporation and have yet to hear from them. my car is current on all recalls issued sulfer. i suggest that jeep be forced to buy back all these commanders and save themselves a big headache. *tr

In the 5 years i have owned the 2006 jeep commander it has stalled while driving, stalled while parked. this happens at no set frequency. sometimes it happens daily, other times it will go for months and not happen. the dash lights repeatedly flash off and on. some dash lights don't work at all for months then like magic work fine for months. the vehicle sputters when accelerating all the time and at different speeds. if i am crossing or turining i need to make sure i have like 2 miles between me and oncoming traffic in case it decides to not work that time and i get stuck in the intersection. the cruise control no longer works. luckily the computer went out that controls the cruise so i can't use it. the cruise used to just speed up and slow down on its own. i will be driving along and all of a sudden without notice the car will floor itself and not stop until i put the car in neutral. regardless of what temperature i have the heater set to there is constantly extremely hot air blowing on my feet. i can not drive without shoes on or the hot air literally burns my feet. overall- there are some serious electrical and mechanical issues with the jeep commander. i googled jeep commander and there are hundreds (i am sure thousands) of similar complaints.

The interior electrical lighting sytems often goes out while driving in below freezing temperatures. this includes all speedometer, tachometer, and dash lights for all controls. this has been a problem since i purchased the vehicle new in february 2007. after five years, the led lights illuminating the switches for the fan speed, temperature control, and heated seats. i reported this under warranty but now i am told i am responsible for repair. the dealership cannot find the electrical fault. the led switch bulbs cannot simply be replaced as the entire unit for each control must be replaced. the engine was making a pinging sound and the dealership diagnosed it wrong 3 times. this should have been repaired under warranty when first reported. many months later after warrantly lapsed the dealership's corrective fix was replacing one side of the engine's hydraulic lifters. this made the problem a bit better but did not resolve it.

2006 jeep commander does not start. we have to try about 30 times sometimes to get it to start. it just makes a clicking noise. also the jeep commander will stall while driving. (very dangerous) especially with two kids. another problem is it gets stuck in low gear or 4x4 (not sure which). i have read complaint after complaint on the internet about these same problems with many many 2006 commanders. i am very displeased with how jeep has swept these problems under the carpet. yes, they have had a few recalls, but nothing to fix these very serious and very dangerous defects. please help, as we spent a good amount of money on what we thought and needed to be a reliable vehicle. it is not reliable at all.

Problems began 1 day after commander went in to dealer for the regular 3,000mile oil change, that car was returned to me after that oil change, as 'good to go'; w/in 24 hours of that oil change, the commander would not start and required a new starter (30k miles). after the starter was replaced, the commander was stalling if - in the middle of a slight incline it had to brake and then resume - at the resume it would stall. also, after starter replaced dashboard lights blinking; transmission cooler lines leaking, power steering line from pump to cooler leaking, and front and back brake rotors had to be replaced (42k miles) 60k miles, the cruise control turns on by itself and the rear park assist turns off by itself; the water leak into front passenger well. speaking with custom relations at chrysler corporate regarding cruise control, rear assist and water leak problems they told me that they were not aware of these being a problem for most commander customers; however, chrysler jeep is aware of these problems as evidenced by the technical service bulletins published on them yet chrysler jeep does not issue a recall/take fiscal responsibility for their manufacturer defects. more: chrysler jeep expects me to pay them to diagnose the problems so that then so long as i have paid a dealer to repair them they will consider (not necessarily approve; in the past they have in fact denied me reimbusement to fix these problems for which they have technical service bulletins on) refunding me total or partial cost of repairs. more: i was only informed of a safety recall regarding ebc module (brake) when i called in last week (12/2011) regarding the water leak & cruise control problem. making this more poignant, the reason for this recall - that i was not notified about when it was first issued- is a brake issue that i had detailed to chrysler jeep in 2009!

Since the first few months that i owned this 2006 jeep commander it has randomly shut down while i am driving. i have noticed that it happens more often in the summer. it has been taken in and had pcm reprogramming, parts replaced, and other work. at the time we purchased it my husband was the gm at the dealership. the techs tried everything. since then the dealership has switched to another automotive group. i have contacted several jeep service departments and many say there is nothing they can do. they are aware of the problem, but have no solutions other than what has already been done. i drive on highways with my two children often and several times it has cut off when speed limits where 65+ mph. i do not want to pass this problem along to another owner. i managed service departments for years and know how to react to problems, but i am concerned that jeep has done nothing to fix this. i know of several other owners who purchased vehicles at the same time who had the same problem. many have been traded in and now new owners are having to deal with this dangerous condition.

2006 jeep commander their are 3 problems which i believe are all interrelated and probably have something to do with electrical system. firstly, the car 75% will not start, will not crank, and all you will hear is a clicking noise. secondly, the car while idling in traffice will lunge forward with higher rpm (with my foot off the accelator mind you) luckily i have been able to brake in time each time it does that. the only problem is that when i apply the brake the car will then stall and the nonstarting problem will reoccur. lastly and most dangerously, the vehicle will cut out/stall at highway speeds - 65-70 mph. this has happened numerous times to me (while going around dangerous curves and thank god i have been able to control the vehicle). i have called chrysler numerous times and their only advice is to bring it into a dealership for a 'diagnostic' where they try to replicate the problem. i have done this and believe they keep trying until the problem does not replicate because it does it almost every time with me. chrysler has a serious problem with this vehicle. it is not only a hassle but a life safety issue. there are thousands of postings on the internet just like mine and chrysler still will no acknowledge the problem. this car need to be 100% recalled and taken off the road as it is a death trap. i would like to sell my car but i cannot morally sell this dangerous car to another unsuspecting customer. please help with this problem. there are thousands like me who are being told off by chrysler. this problem must be resolved or deaths will certainly occur.

My 2006 jeep commander has now stalled 4 times for no apparent reason. the engine dies and i lose power steering and brakes. the first time was when i was pulling into a parking lot. i managed to restart it and no harm was done. the second time i was pulling out of my driveway, and again i was able to restart it and no harm was done. the third time was last week. this time it stalled and i could not restart it. i had it towed to a dealer, sherman jeep in skokie, il, for repairs. they had it a week and charged me $616.00 and could not give me a satisfactory explanation as to why it stalled. on the way home from the dealership i took the expressway and the car stalled at 65 mph in heavy traffic. it was extremely difficult to control and i almost collided with a truck. i thought i was going to die. i managed to get it over to the side of the road, but it would not immediately start. after about 15 minutes i tried it again, and this time it started. i got home, but i am scared to death to drive this car.

I have a 2006 jeep commander that has stalled 4-5 while driving in normal traffic conditions both at normal speeds as well as when approaching a stop. i have to shift the car to neutral t restart or stop and restart the vehicle. this presents a very dangerous situation as my wife and child drive/ride in the vehicle daily. we have to take the vehicle to two different dealers on three different occasions and spent hundreds of dollars to fix the issue but the problem persists. this is a serious safety that should be addressed. *tr

Just bought 2006 jeep commander (3.7l v6 4x4) used with 14k miles, clean car fax report within first 36 hours of ownership speed sensor went out resulting in service approximately 2 weeks after ownership i stalled with my 8 and a half month pregnant wife on the interstate. we just had it towed to the dealership and am questioning whether or not this vehicle will be safe for my wife and child. waiting until something disastrous happens to do something is not a good policy and feel that is the only thing that will cause the government to do something. *tr

My 2006 commander with 40,000 miles has had the following problems since it came off the lot. the vehicle stalls and i obviously lose power and steering but there are no error messages in the computer, the 4wd does not engage - the warning light for that comes on but there's no error message in the computer. the window's roll up and down incorrectly - the gasket on the exhaust manifold has been replaced and the kicker of all problems is when the vehicle goes through a minor puddle of water or the automatic car wash the steering wheel locks completely until the water is gone - try driving that in the rain - jeep was finally able to duplicate that problem by putting a garden hose under the car and squirting water on the underside of the vehicle - this problem apparently cannot be fixed and they can't believe that no other jeep owner's aren't throwing fits. so much for the lemon law - the steering problem wasn't taken seriously by the previous jeep dealers -i went to a different dealer altogether however, it's too late. *tr

Our 06 jeep commander has been a nightmare since the day we purchased it used with 14k miles on it in 3/07. we continue to have problems with the dash lights coming on, stalling just today 7/22- the lights lit up and the air conditioner quit working!!! no fan no blower... nothing. it has been brought in for the recall for this but it keeps happening. oh and did i mention that autopark jeep in cary, nc sold me a lemon/buyback.... they gave me the carfax report after 30 visits to the service dept.... fool me once, fool me twice... i am hoping that jeep will buy it back again for this complete lemon!! i know have 37k on it and the service dept was talking that they did not know if jeep would cover the work.... they can keep it.. *tr

I bought my 2006 jeep commander in 2006 as a demo with 18,000 miles on it. i really didn't drive it that much as you can tell by the mileage on it and it has only had three oil changes. when it reached about 20,000 miles it stalled on my way to work and i called and spoke to a tech where i bought the car, he told me that i had probably gotten some bad gas. then two weeks ago it stalled again and the engine light came on for a day, then it went out. it came on again and stayed on and it continued to stay on, and service park assist displayed on the dash. the dealer where we bought the car is 20 miles from where we live so i made an appointment with a dodge dealer about 3 miles from my home. on monday july 7th when driving there for the appointment, i was making a left hand turn and it shut down, no brakes, no steering, no lights on the dash, nothing. i got to the side of the road and it re-started after 3 tries. i made it to the dealer and they called my today and said it was ready and they had to install a tcm module. i went to pick it up, and on the way home, it did the same thing again, the only thing it didn't do was display the engine light, but the stalling and the service park assist came back on. i took it back to them and they hooked it back up to the computer and told me i needed to find a way home and they would call me tomorrow. they didn't know what was wrong with it yet. *tr

I purchased my 2006 jeep commander 3.7 4x4 in 2007 as a demo. it had 18,000 miles on it when i bought it and now is has 28,000. i have not driven it very much as you can tell by the mileage, and it has only had to have two oil changes (every 3,000 miles) and is almost due for another. i have been having issues for three weeks now, 1. first it stalled in traffic when i was doing about 30 mph. 2. the engine light came on and stayed for a day, went off and came back on two days later and has been on since. 3. when driving, the car will shift really hard into second gear for no reason. on the 3rd of july it started doing all sorts of weird shifts and stalls, i made an appointment with the dealer tomorrow, and i have not driven it since the 3rd of july because i am worried about breaking something. *tr

2007 jeep commander. six months after the purchase of a new jeep commander the jeep started losing power and stalling. it didn't matter what speed the jeep was going. it has stalled and lost power and all electronics pulling into traffic and cruising down the interstate. the jeep was towed to the dealership where the junction box was replaced. numerous tests were completed but no definitive reason was found for the stalling. i was told the jeep was fixed. the jeep has since stalled 3 more times, one time with when my wife was driving and my daughters ages 4 and 7 were onboard. this time, they were nearly hit by a tractor trailer pulling out of the local grocery store. the jeep had to be towed back to the dealership where it sits right now. the service department seems to think it's the ignition switch but i know better. i'm seeking a lease buy out by chrysler and plan to sue if they do not take the jeep back. this jeep is going to kill someone and i will not let it be my wife or children. *tr

Problem with my 2006 jeep commander engine stalling. this has happened on 3-4 different occasions and happened again today in a parking lot. the engine just completely shuts down and nothing works, including the steering. each time it has happened i have been going at a slow speed. i have taken it to my dealer who says they can't find anything wrong with it ( bob schwartz-bunker hill indiana).i am going to take it in again to see if they can possibly fix this problem now since there have been other commander owners complain. i am really afraid to drive this vehicle now especially with my kids. if jeep is aware of these complaints, they need to issue a recall on the 2006 & 2007 models also instead of just the 2008. if this would happen at highway speeds, it would have possibly been deadly!!! please help. *tr

My 2006 jeep commander has stalled with me several times. the scariest when i was turning into a middle school driveway and it just shut off leaving me without any brakes or steering. it has also stalled several times at the end of my driveway. but the worse problem is for the second time in 4 months it will not start. last time it was a tip failure. something was wrong with the start up module. this was in jan. 23 08. now, april 21, 2008 it has done it again. last time it was still under warranty and i have called a tow truck this time too. it is still under warranty but with only 3000 miles to go. i am worried this part will continue to break. i am afraid i will be alone and the car will not crank somewhere. this is not safe. you must be able to depend on your vehicle starting. the last time it was repaired with part number 4692084-ab b;lci non 8015009 whatever all that means. it was run without any problems since that repair until today. fortunately it broke down in my carport. *tr

There is a 4/07 nhtsa investigation into 2006-7 jeep commanders' intermittent and persistent engine stalling problems - supposedly in response to 76 complaints. nhtsa really needs to read its own complaints about this problem, which can be found not only in the commander line but also in 2005-2008 jeep grand cherokees. there are hundreds of complaints on the internet (jeepforum.com, usenet news, etc.) about jeep vehicles stalling, besides the commander. i fear that even if chrysler is finally forced to address the problem under this investigation, they will simply point to the 2006-7 commanders portion of the settlement and completely ignore the exact same problem in other years and other models of jeep. they cannot be allowed to continue waving off their customers, who paid for their products in good faith, and now are not being supported. they need to be forced to acknowledge and rectify this very wide spread problem immediately, before their negligence gets someone killed. unfortunately, we lowly consumers have little to no power over a giant like chrysler. that is why we need organizations like the nhtsa to help us. nhtsa, please review your other complaints under the jeep brand and expand your investigation as appropriate. anyone else with a jeep that keeps stalling, please continue to post your complaints here and anywhere else you can find. these stalling problems need to be fixed, and chrysler needs to take ownership of this dangerous issue immediately. *tr

I bought the car used and within the first two weeks it stalled in a parking lot. then it jerks when i leave my house in the morning all the way down the hill. they said it needed a couple parts and it didn't resolve that issue. then the car stalled while driving twice more with my child in the car once i could barely get off the road. then it just tried to stop while i was driving and i had to rev the engine unbelievably to get it to the side of the road. i brought it to two dealers who couldn't find the problem or duplicate it. they put in a new starter anyway. they told me to not hit the ignition with my knee. then the car stalled again this afternoon driving about 10 miles per hour. so it doesn't matter what the speed is. *tr

My vehicle's engine unexpectedly shuts off while i'm driving. the first time it happened while i was driving over 50 mph, that scared me because i lost my power steering and it was hard to control my vehicle. the other thing is that once it shuts off, the vehicle won't let you restart on the fly, you have to come to a complete stop, put the vehicle in park and restart your engine. that can be potentially dangerous on the freeway. *tr

On at least ten different occasions the 2006 jeep commander has stalled at speeds ranging from 15 to 70 miles per hour. power is shut off completely leading to the loss of all functionality. if the steering wheel is turned slightly, the wheel locks, leaving the vehicle in a situation where it has to coast to a stop. this is a terrifying experience with small children in the vehicle. accidents have nearly occurred as a result of this happening. there have been seven occasions when this problem has been reported to the local dealer with nothing accomplished to correct the problem. the dealer blames the operators of the vehicle for hitting the key with their knee. this is not the cause of the problem as it occurs when the driver's knee is nowhere near the key. the service department apparently can not duplicate this problem when they service the vehicle for some reason though it is a very real issue for my family. *tr

Soon after i purchase my 2006 jeep commander sport 4x4 (5 speed)... i began to do some research on this vehicle (i should have done this prior to the purchase)... i was going through this complaint database and i was alarmed to read that this vehicle has a history of stalling. well, it finally happened to me on 11/4/2007 (with 11,600 exact mileage) driving home from shopping with my family. the commander stalled out on during the highway merged. luckily, i was in the far right lane to jump off the highway immediately. the power loss that i experience was only with ability to move the vehicle. my dashboards lights, headlights, radio; breaks were fully operational (thankfully). no accidents, no injuries except my children are now afraid of being inside of the commander. to be honest, so am i. there have been numerous reports on what is occurring?.. everything from downloading an upgraded to debris in the hose. either way, chrysler needs to address this immediately; the potential of death is very realistic. *tr

Since the beginning of ownership, this car has stalled many times (as well as other various and odd electrical problems.) many times i can turn the car off and on and it will restart. this does happen in parking lots and highway speeds as well. i have also lost power steering and brakes when in parking lots at a very slow acceleration speed. i have also had air bag warning lights go on and stay on then randomly shut off. the dealer has tried to help resolve but is limited by chrysler's ability to recognize that there is a problem. if there is no code in the cars computer, there is no problem and can't be duplicated. if the problem can't be duplicated, there is no repair. but it keeps happening over and over. i have filed a complaint with chrysler with no resolve. the dealership has had my car and drove it for 3 weeks to try to duplicate the problem. since it is so random and they just didn't get enough time/miles in, the problem didn't happen. it stalled again about 3 weeks after that pulling out of my driveway. there has been no repair, because chrysler says there is no problem. i have been in the middle of an intersection with a 15 year old on a permit driving with oncoming traffic. i have had this car since march 2006 and this has been occurring many times repeatedly since then. not all have been documented and because it occasionally happens on weekends or holidays, i have no ability to get it in to a dealership. in order for them to be able to read a code, i would have to leave the car in a stalled position wherever it occurred and have it towed directly to the dealer. this is highly impractical and unsafe. especially scary at high speeds on the highway. i do not want to be a casualty of chrysler's failure to recognize that there are thousands of these vehicles out there doing this exact same thing. do a google search see the #'s! something needs to be done!!! *jb

My 2006 jeep commander v8 has stalled 4 times since buying it in april of 2007. the first time was when i was backing up in reverse in my driveway. the second time a few months later, after backing up, put the jeep in drive and it stalled. the third time was in august, i had backed up in my parking lot at work put the jeep in drive and was going about 15 mph and the jeep stalled. the last time was august 28, 2007, i was making a left hand turn into mcdonald's with my 8 month old, 6+7 year old children as well as being 5 months pregnant, the jeep stalled, i lost my brakes and power steering with oncoming traffic heading towards me. it took i my strength to turn the wheel tp get out of the road. i have had the jeep to the dealership to have this looked at 3 times. the last in august before the 4th episode. they had my jeep for 4 days and could not find anything wrong with it. i have called jeep and made a complaint. their response was to take it back to the dealership. i am very frustrated and feel unsafe with my children in this vehicle and no one seems to care or want to help. after looking at this list of complaints on this website on 2006 jeep commanders stalling, something needs to be done. *jb

My husband and i are leasing a 2006 jeep commander since nov 2005. i have been involved in 3 separate traffic accidents on may 31 2006, august 8 2006 and september 20 2007. the engine stalled during low speed turns on both august 8 2006 and september 20 2007. i had just left a stop sign on may 31 2006 when my engine stalled in the intersection, resulting in a crash. i was cited for failure to yield on may 31 2006. i wasn't cited on august 8 2006 or september 20 2007, although the police report from the september 20 2007 accident describes a failure to yield. i have also had ongoing tire pressure issues as well as intermittent brake failure issues. prior to may 31 2006 i had never been involved in a traffic accident nor had i received any traffic citations. i am 48 years old. my vehicle was repaired twice after the first 2 accidents, but i am awaiting contact from the other party's auto insurer before proceeding with the repairs following yesterday's accident. i've brought the 2006 jeep commander in to bud mulcahy's jeep on several occasions. that dealership is now closed. *tr

Twice while pulling into parking spaces, once while pulling out of a drive-through into the main road, and once while coming to a stop sign, my 2006 jeep commander has stalled, losing brakes and steering. i have to restart the car using the key. no indicator light tells me what happened or that there is anything wrong. the first time it took into the dealer, they said that my computerized fuel mix ratio was way off. they said it should be at 0 and that mine was at 6.something. they reset it to 1.5, the lowest they could get it to. they felt that this was the problem causing the stall. i got the car back and it did not stall for two months but then stalled again. i took it back to the dealer and they stated that they could not find any computerized indicator to tell them why this was happening and could not make it happen while it was at the shop. the shop manager said that he even looked on the internet to see if there were any other cases and could find none. hesaid that there was nothing from daimler/chrysler about it either. when i went to the ntsba web site, i found that there was an investigation into this since feb 2007 and that daimler/chrysler responded that they are now doing their own investigation. if this is the case, why would the dealership not know anything about it. i got the car back and within two weeks it stalled again at the stop sign. this last incident was on sept 13, 2007. i called the dealer and they do not have a solution. *tr

We purchased a 2006 jeep commander in april 2007. since we purchased this vehicle, it has stalled on 12 separate, random occasions. i have documented the stalls which have occurred while in reverse, driving less than 10mph, and at higher speeds on the highway. when the car shuts down while on, i have to pull over (with no lights or power steering) and put the car into park to restart the car. it always starts up again with no problems. i have also noted that it occurs in both cold and warm temperatures. i have had the car in jeep's service depts on three occasions. on the first two visits, they said they could not find anything wrong with the vehicle. on the third visit, they admitted that others had complained of the same problems and they replaced the ignition switch to see if that corrects the problem. i have talked to other commander owners who also have had this same major issue with their vehicle. *tr

Jeep commander limited 2006 stalled while driving at a speed of 25mph. car lost power steering and brakes. the car experienced a complete electrical failure and just died. events leading up to the failure include the car rumbling to the point where it feels as if would stall but did not. it finally did completely stall as noted in the opening sentences. the dealership where the car was purchased, stated they cannot pin point the exact cause but per chrysler a possible solution was to clean and reseal the main wiring harness to the power distribution center. after that they have been attempting phone calls to chrysler to troubleshoot the problem. we were told chrysler can't guarantee the problem will be found. now we are left with a car that is unsafe to drive as it may stall out while driving without warning. *tr

We own a jeep commander 2006, we have had problems with the engine shutting off. it has happen while turning, while taking an off ramp, on the highway. i have refused to allow anyone to drive the commander considering i have 3 children and my wife. the upsetting part is that the dealership says they can't do anything because the computer says their is no problem. the last incident was on sept. 04 2007. *tr

I took my 2006 jeep commander to my local dealer where i originally purchased it to get the stalling problem fixed. five days later the service manager said that the problem was now solved (august 24,2007) finally. the service department said they put in a new program that would fix the jeep from just losing power. august 25 saturday morning at 8:13 while at an intersection the jeep just died again. another problem is the windshield breaking easily. i believe the problem with the breaking windshield could be related to the inproper fitting of the windshield which results in a loud noise being heard inside the vehicle. the dealership said they won't fix the seal problem because my jeep has two cracks on it. i said if you had fixed the windshield seal problem the first 3 times i brought it in we wouldn't have this problem'. no problems have yet to be solved. ancira dealership in san antonio,tx. many jeep owners are purchasing multiple windshields at $385 a pop. the dealer tried to say it's just me until i pointed out all the other complaints in writing with all different vin numbers and even showed her the rental car (jeep commander) which also had a cracked windshield. she's convinced too. *tr

I purchased a 2006 jeep commander last year. i have had the following items replaced on my jeep front passenger interior door panel. strange noise coming from my car that sounded like playing cards in bike tires ended with replacing front axel ring and pinion. car kept popping out of gear the entire gear shift was replaced. my passenger window had to be fixed it kept sticking halfway up. i had a problem where my car kept stalling. i was told the first time that no error appears on the computer and jeep knew of no issue with cars stalling so maybe it was bad gas. it died several more times and finally they did replace a part inside the idol. i also had an issue where my headlights kept turning off as i drove or would flash on and off. they replaced the headlight switch. i have had the rubber stripping from my back driver side window come off and now it is occurring on the passenger side. from the beginning i have told them i do not feel my transmission is working properly that it shifts hard and when i shift from reverse to drive there is a big hesitation. i have been told no error is appearing on computer and that jeep as usual has no known issues so they had no suggestions. once again they thought it was a gas issue moving from winter to summer blend. the last time i had it in when it was stalling i told them it the transmission was still hesitating and would make a pop noise at times then it would go. it is still occurring and at times the car acts like it might not shift into drive. i am satisfied with how my dealership is working with me they are doing their best to help me. i blame jeep/chrysler all you have to do is search the web to see that there are so many others just like me with the exact same issue. they need to recall these cars now and if they can not find the problem then replace them for us. *tr

At approx 29k my 2006 jeep commander began acting like it was going to stall out while the engine idled whether in park or drive. it also would act like it was going to stall if i were turning and hit a curb or bump. examples of when this happened: 1. at night, my engine was running, the car was in drive with my foot on the brake and my door was open; the interior lights began to dim and the engine almost cut off. 2. i was turning right from one road to another and hit the curb and the engine almost stalled. 3. i was stopped at an intersection waiting to turn right onto a road when the engine almost stalled. 3. i was parked with the engine running idle at a gas station looking for my atm card when the engine almost stalled. these instances seem to happen every couple of weeks. the jeep has been to 2 different dealers three different times for this and they told me that they can't replicate the problem and that my alternator is working at the correct amps. in addition, i have had transmission leaks and my family was left stranded 6 hours away due to a transmission problem that one dealer said was the mistake of another when they fixed my transmission leak. *tr

I bought this jeep commander in march 23, 2006. the first time that the vehicle stalls while driving at 65 mph on the freeway was four months after i bought it. the power went off as if the ignition is turned off and the steering wheel hardened which made it impossible to turn to the shoulder lane. i ignored this problem because it never came back until april 5-10, 2007. i brought the commander to a dealer in the area and have them check the problem. they can not find the problem or duplicate it to fix it. they told me there were no problem. i'm scared out of my wits driving this jeep, not knowing when it stalls again. a few days later i brought it back to the dealer for it stalls on me again while driving 50 mph in the freeway. after a week of researching and diagnostics, they told me they might have fixed the problem by updating the final drive module. today, may 3, 2007, while driving 20 mph, the commander stalls again. all the light signs flick on and off as i drive. i have two children, 2 and 10 years old and i'm so scared that other cars will hit us. *tr

When making hard turns my 2006 jeep commander will occasionally try to stall. pressing the gas pedal down slowly, the engine acts like it is trying to stall, and speed does not increase. my example & definition of a hard turn: you're a car or two from a red light. light turns green, you accelerate 20 feet or so and make a 90 degree turn. happens on average at least once a month. dealer says they are aware of problems, but have no fix from jeep. have heard this for a year. *tr

 1) 2006 jeep commander began stalling just weeks after purchasing it. the vehicle has stalled about 10 times in 12 months. 2) the vehicle completely stalls while driving (usually while in the process of slowing down), or when coming to stop or when beginning to go. this has happened in parking lots, intersections, as well as driving on busy roads. luckily the cars behind put on their brakes before rear-ending my car. however, the result could easily be an accident - which i am trying to prevent. 3) brought the vehicle two times to the dealership where it was purchased. i was told that while they and chrysler are aware, they have not come up with a fix for the problem because they do not know what is causing it. i also called chrysler's customer service number and was told that i had to get a second opinion but there was nothing else they could do because the problem has not been diagnosed. *jb

2006 4.7 v8 jeep commander has had multiple problems, the most severe being 3 (out of 7) inoperable seatbelts and sporadic stalling of the vehicle. the first 8 - 10 times the vehicle stalled (went dead), i was at a stopped position attempting to accelerate. the most recent incident happened as i was driving in traffic. i lost all power steering and brakes when the vehicle died. i was going up a slight incline which assisted me in stopping and i put the vehicle in neutral and restarted. i have refused to drive the vehicle since that time out of safety concerns for my children and for others on the road. the dealership has attempted to correct the problem on 4 occasions - nothing has worked. the chrysler corporation refuses to buy-back the vehicle because the dealership has not duplicated the problem in the shop. i have witnesses to the occurrences and have documented each time it has happened. *jb

While driving at highway speed (60 mph) the entire vehicle stalled out/shut down. we lost all power in the vehicle. we had to stop the vehicle in the middle of the road and re-start the ignition. this has happened 3 times in the 2 months we have had the vehicle. the dealership is looking at the vehicle next week 9/22/06. we have also had a wind leak in the drivers side window and after 2 failed attempts to fix the problem they still cannot offer a solution. will look at again next week. *jb

1st occurrence of the stalling/dying: 7/23/06. vehicle was moving at a slow speed making a right hand turn. the vehicle lost power (no response when pushing on the gas pedal and the power steering also failed). driver had to put the vehicle into park from drive, turn the key to the off position and then back to the start position. the 2nd occurrence was on 8/9/06 12:30 pm. at a stoplight on a hill waiting to turn left. the light turned, the car in front of her accelerated and when driver took her foot off of the brake to apply the gas and the car began to roll backwards. after this occurrence, driver called the dealership and spoke with a svc advisor. driver described the symptoms and they said they had heard of this happening on some other commanders and that they knew the part that typically fixed it. driver made appt to bring in for service. vehicle dropped off 8/10/06. call from svc dept. 8/11/2006 and stated tech tested found a bad map sensor. they replaced the sensor and said the problem should be resolved. the 3rd occurrence happened on 8/15/06 7:40 am. driver was stopped waiting for traffic to clear to make a right turn onto highway 212 from 222nd drive. at this point, driver called dealership and asked to speak with a service adviser and said she would be bringing the vehicle back in as it wasn't fixed. the 4th occurrence happened 8/15/06 5:50 pm while the vehicle was in motion on highway 217 driving to the northwest jeep dealership. driver was in slow rush hour traffic- 5-10 ph. depressed the gas pedal to accelerate to keep up with traffic and the car just continued to coast with no acceleration. she had to put the vehicle in park, turn the key to the off position, start the car again and then stop on the highway to put car back into drive. *nm

*tr

My husband and i financed a used 2006 jeep commander while he was home on 2 weeks of leave from and 18 month tour in afghanistan. about a week after we took the car home it stalled out for the first time. a week after that it did it again and we immediately pulled off the road and took it to the closest dealer which was luckily less than 2 miles down the road. he hooked it up to diagnostics and told us something about the computer recording a freak reading of barometric pressure which is what made the car shut off and that it shouldn't happen again. after my husband returned to afghanistan to fight terrorism for the us army i was driving home after dark from out of town and my headlights started to flicker...the frequency of this kept increasing and each time this happened the interior lights would also flicker and it became increasingly difficult to have the lights come back on. luckily i got home before they quit working completely. today, i was at the end of a drive to visit family and the car stalled for the third time in less than a month! i lost brakes, steering, lights, ac, and radio. traffic was heavy and i narrowly avoided an accident!!!! after about a minute, i was able to pop the car into neutral and get it started again. thank god my two children were not in the car! i got to my relatives house and began researching this problem and found numerous complaints on the internet, something we were not made aware of when buying the vehicle. the fact that this has happened to hundreds of other families makes me livid. my husband is getting shot at everyday for his country and its okay for an american manufacturer to sell faulty vehicles to people?!?!?! *jb

My 2006 jeep commander continually stalls, threatening the lives of whoever is in the car. there is no warning. suddenly there will be a complete loss of control over the vehicle. no warning lights, no bells, sounds, whistles...nothing! the only way to remedy is to turn vehicle off and restart. this turns in to a life threatening incident when the traffic behind you is unaware that you are in fact stalled. the dealership has no updates or complaints of this problem (ya, right) and drives it around the block...with no incidences occurring. if they think it's going to happen while they're driving the vehicle, they're wrong. i 'm risking my families lives every time we get in the car. it's the most expensive piece of junk i've ever owned! visibility out the rear window when the 3rd row seats are up is just about zero. this is extremely dangerous. you can't see cars, kids, or your neighbors house when you're trying to see what's behind you. driver's side locks on it's own. luckily the passenger doors remain unlocked, so i haven't locked myself out...yet. *jb

Jeep commander stalling! while driving at low speeds i have experienced several stall outs. i have taken it back in for service several times for this problem with no resolution (the latest being an updating the flash). these stall out are unpredictable which make them that much more dangerous. *tr

*while driving down a level highway at about 70 mph, while using cruise, the rpms jumped drastically as if going into overdrive. although it shifted for whatever reason, as i stated it was flat ground, there was no pick up speed. **however, at other times i have had the 2006 jeep commander accelerate for no reason. i was not pushing on the gas and it has happened while in cruise. ***i have also experienced sputtering mostly at about 40 mph but it has happened at speeds around 70 mph on the highway. thankfully traffic has been clear enough to regain proper control. no pattern. i took it to the dealer after they told me to look for a pattern and there wasn't one. there were no error codes and the situation could not be duplicated. not real pleased. i am listing each type of failure separately on this site. i am also simply using a basic date because it has happened multiple times. when i picked up the jeep i was told it's a big motor and people just aren't used to driving them. my husband was raised on a farm, so he knows big motors. not acceptable. it feels very unsafe. *jb

While driving my 2006 jeep commander (5.7l hemi engine) at approximately 60 mph, the engine stalled, forcing me to pull over to the side of the road. once stopped, the vehicle did restart, but after four days of diagnosing the problem, the dealership is unable to identify the source of the problem. *tr

On a number of occasions while driving my 2006 jeep commander limited's engine has shut off. the power steering goes out, the engine cuts off and you are just sitting there. this is incredibly dangerous as there is always traffic and you don't have the steering to easily move your car to a safe place. this needs to be addressed immediately by chrysler. *jb

2007 jeep commander, v8 engine.....this vehicle has stalled numerous times since i purchased new 02/2006. it started about 3 months after purchase and is continuing to stall to the point that i will not allow my teenager daughter to drive the vehicle. my dealership (i have purchased 6 new chrysler vehicles over past 16 years) says they have no idea how to fix, that i will have to wait on chrysler to recall if there is a problem. someone is going to get killed in this vehicle, is that what it takes to get someone to realize there is a problem? they suggested that i called and complain to you as well as chrysler.....*nm

I have a 2006 jeep commander, i have had this vehicle since november 2005. i have taken this vehicle to the dealer on different occasion due to my car stalling. it isn't until my steering wheel locks and i can't push the gas peddle that i realize i have no power. my dash lights don't come on, my radio doesn't go off. i just stall... the dealer says the computer doesn't register the cut off, and they can't find the problem. so i have this car that i never know when it will die....i was going to a valentine party and on my way there my car cut off twice within a minute and half and neither showed up on the my vehicles computer, the person that was behind me at the time got a little road rage and sped around me with the finger. i have an 8 year old daughter and i would like to have my case investigated. as i submit this my car is in the shop now. *nm

Re: pe07-009 -- 2006 jeep commander 4.7l v8 -- automatic stalled every time backed out of garage and on other slight inclines at slow speeds. had the car for 6 days on a rental from enterprise. investigator chris lash may want to query enterprise about the performance of the commanders in their fleet -- quick way to capture feedback on a large number of cars. moreover, enterprise seems to know there is a problem because they are very willing to sell these cars out of the fleet program well in advance of the vehicle meeting minimum mileage limits usually observed. we were considering buying a car from them until we discovered on the web-blogs that many customers have experienced similar stalling incidents. *jb

I bought a 2006 jeep commander with a 5.7l hemi in dec. of 2006. i now have roughly 3000 miles on it and it's stalls daily. sometimes two-times a day. whether i am on a highway exit ramp, at a stop light or slowing down this vehicle randomly shuts off. it's seems to only happen when slowing down and right after i come to a complete stop. this problem began about a week and a half after i bought the vehicle. i have noticed lot's of reports online about this same problem. i want this problem fixed or i want a different vehicle. i have almost been in 7 major crashes involving busy intersections cause of this stall problem. my wife refuses to ride in the vehicle and i hate driving it now. *jb

The car goes completely dead while being driven. electrical, steering, brakes, everything goes out. the car is moving when this happens. it has never quit running while stopped, which would not be as dangerous. have to struggle to control the car and bring it to a stop, while traffic is coming at me from all sides. when i put it in park and start it up, it runs fine. this has happened 9 times in less than a year. it's potentially deadly to the driver and passengers in the car, and any other cars or pedestrians in the vicinity. i've complained many times but the service dept. discouraged me from bringing it in since it didn't happen every time i drove the car, but finally got so bad i took it in. two times they could not find out what the problem is. now the car has a monitor hooked up to it to record any fault codes. however, i will not drive the car. it is parked in the driveway and i am driving my daughter's car. we have filed a lemon law complaint and will pursue vigorously for the car to be repurchased so i can buy a different car that doesn't put me and my family in harm's way.

 (1) car is off, but air conditioner, or blower, is turned on (2) car starts, engine light, or gas gauge doesn't come on, it starts, you drive a bit, it makes noise(s) then stalls (3) turned car off after it rolls to a stop. when i turn the air conditioner, or blower to the off position i seem to not have as many stalls, if not any. when the dealership looks at it when the engine light is off they cannot see any error codes. when the engine light is on who is near a dealer to see the freaking' error codes?!?!?! *jb

My wife and i purchased a new 2006 jeep commander lt with a 5.7 liter v8 on july 24, 2006. four days later we went on a road trip from washington dc to boston, ma. just outside new york city, the commander stalled (went dead, no power brakes, steering) in rush hour traffic. scared us both. managed to get to the side of the road. put it in park and turned the ignition and started the commander and continued driving. the commander had less than 800 miles on it. we called the dealer. they said to bring it in when we got back. the next day on our way back home we stopped in a jeep dealership in mystic conn. they ran a diagnostic and came up with 2 codes p1684 and p0884. they cleared the history, tested again and found nothing. we took it in to the dealership on monday july 31. they said that they could not duplicate the problem. the car stalled again on august 15th, 2006. the commander now has 1350 miles and is back in the shop and the dealership doesn't know what the problem is. we called daimler chrysler customer service to lodge a compliant, the customer service advisor said that he had not ever heard that there was a stalling problem with the 2006 commanders. my wife is afraid that the commander will stall again and cause a serious accident and kill someone including us. we believe there is a serious problem with this car and others according to others on jeepforum.com. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated that the vehicle stalled unexpectedly after approaching a stop sign on 06/20/06. the contact depressed the accelerator which made the vehicle leap forward, then stall out. the 2nd incident also occurred during attempted acceleration. on 07/13/06 the vehicle stalled unexpectedly while cruising 55 mph on a dry and flat road surface. there were no warnings prior to the three incidents. the contact pulled over and contacted the dealer. the engine restarted with no delay after all 3 incidents. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on 07/13/06 who could not duplicate the problem. the dealer has attempted to repair the vehicle 3 times but could not determine the cause of the problem. the vehicle was equipped with an automatic transmission.

*tr

I own a 2006 jeep commander 4x4 v8. i have had a ton of problems with it. it makes a terrible wind noise coming from the windshield, my ac sounds like a freight train when switch to or from ac, and the most dangerous is that my car dies while turning on a regular basis. i have taken the car in and the dealer tells me they can not find the problem. i am so annoyed with my death trap. i drive around my 3 kids, my husband, and myself. i fear for ours lives being in this car. it is unsafe and will end up killing someone one day. *tr

*tr

Experienced engine stall and loss of power to instrument panel momentarily while approaching residential 30 mph speed. had just pulled out of my driveway and was accelerating when it happened. i noticed the stall and looked at the instrument panel, which appeared to be inoperative. then it 'came back to life' and i tried to accelerate. the engine responded and i kept driving with no other issues. *tr

I just read an article in newspaper about the jeep commander's stalling problem. this has happened to me, but luckily, not at a high speed on the highway. the commander has only stalled once on me, actually, within the last week, while driving, but many times it seriously hesitates when i start to accelerate. questions to dealer said maybe it was poor gas, or a vapor lock (about the stalling)? i never had it documented with them about the stall, now after reading this article, i am concerned. the stall happened within the last week, so it has not been back to dealer. it started right up after i coasted to side of road, and placed in park. have there been any complaints on the windshield angle, i have gone through three from rocks!!! glass very straight up! i do like the truck though. purchase date approximate. i do like dealer, and have not addressed this problem to them (stall), because it only happened once, and i was unaware of current problem being looked into. i just wanted you to report mine in with your statistics. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that he heard a loud screaming sound. upon inspection, he concluded that the timing belts caused that failure. he took the vehicle to the dealer and they rerouted the timing belts and the blower motor. approximately two days while driving 60 mph, the vehicle vibrated excessively. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they performed a wheel alignment. one week later he heard the screaming noise again. the dealer repaired the serpentine belt however two weeks later he heard a loud noise coming from the engine. the dealer stated the compressor caused the failure. as of january 7, 2008, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. the failure mileage was 35,121 and current mileage was 36,120.

I own a 2006 jeep commander and i have had to take it in to have the bolts in the mainfold replaced three times now. we bought the jeep brand new in aug. 06. the first time the bolts broke were in may 08, the 2nd time was july 09 and now apr 10. the first time the bolts broke the jeep was under warranty, the other 2 times i've had to pay out of pocket for the repairs. we drive the vehicle for everyday use and there should be no reason for these bolts to keep breaking. i have called chrysler to let them know about it, but got no where. the first incident i had one broken bolt, the 2nd time there were 3 bolts broken and this time there are 2 broken. we have owned many cars and never once had to replace bolts in the manifold until purchasing this jeep. my mechanic tells me that bolts breaking off in the manifold is not a normal thing that should be happening. the commander we own has an 8 cylinder engine in it.
