| The agency, particularly in recent months, has been informed of incidents involving allegations of personal injury and death claimed to have been caused by safety defects and failures to conform to minimum federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvss) on rental car vehicles for which a safety recall to remedy the safety defect or noncompliance had allegedly not been performed prior to the rental car company's lease of the vehicle.nhtsa understands that there is presently a petition before the federal trade commission (ftc) seeking to prohibit at least one rental car company from renting vehicles on which safety recall campaign remedies remain outstanding.the purpose of this audit query (aq) is to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on the above-listed safety recall campaigns.these campaigns were chosen due to their inclusion of vehicles used in the rental market.this information is expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets, in general or individually, perform necessary recall-related repairs or other remedies on the vehicles owned and then leased for use on the roadways.this aq is opened. | ||||||

| The rear passenger inside door handle is no longer functioning. there is a piece of plastic within the door that braces the handle so it is secure enough to be able to pull it and open ( unlatch) the door. at this point the door closes but is impossible for the passenger to open the door from the inside. this is a serious safty concern for i have 2 childern that ride in the back frequently. my jeep dealer was notified and i was told that is is not covered under warranty. my jeep is under 100, 000 miles and for this to happen inside the door where no person can touch this ridiculous. | |||

| Faulty interior door handle assembly problem the problem is with the incorrect resin mix which results in a brittle and crumbling material causing failure just the same. this is obviously a manufacturer defect, however its a fault that is not covered under jeep warranty. the only fix was replacing the entire door panels. chrysler designed the interior door panels on the jeep commander in such a way that the entire door panel had to be replaced rather than just the door handle. the interior door handle is plastic welded at certain points from the backside of the door panel. i understand 2008 models had a door handle redesign so they obviously knew of this problem. thank you for any assistance you can provide. | |||

| The door handles where you open and close the door have completely shattered in to pieces by just opening and closing the door normally. i am unable to exit my car properly because the drivers side handle is completely shattered and will not open. i am unable to exit my car without crawling across the seat due to the handle completely crumbling and now other door i use to get out has started to crumble. one of the back doors is starting to break as well and they tell me it will cost over 2800.00 to repair. i don't have that kind of money to fix a door handle. i'm afraid i'm in danger if i have to exit my car in a hurry or my daughter or a riding guest. it's horrible that it just cracks like nothing and they wont take any responsibility. i cannot just open my door and get out of my car. they all being broken is one thing and i believe obviously a flaw on jeeps part, but not being able to get out of my car is dangerous. | |||

| We had the driver door handle break and called chrysler because there are so many complaints on the internet about this. we were advised to take it to a dealer and have it looked at and a report made. we did that and also had pictures taken and sent with the report to chrysler, our case # 22652678 was filed. at the time 2 other door handles were showing cracks. we were turned down for a repair even though it is a safety issue. since that time 2 more handles broke. 2 can not be opened from the inside. we were told they would concider discounting the repair to 1300.00 per door. if they have such a bad design and plastic parts you would think an honorable company would do the recall and repair. we now have a dangerous car with no way to exit in an emergency. at our age we can not be jumping over consoles and seats to exit the car. our children have been advised to sue if anything happens because chrysler does not want to correct the problem they created. i understand 2008 models had a door handle redesign so they obviously knew of the problem. thank you for any assistance you can provide. | |||

| I took my vehicle to hall chrysler jeep and dodge dealership to get an oil change done and for them to check my starter. well after i picked it up that night i was driving home my tire sensor pressure pistons on the right passenger back side of the car first fell off. i called the dealership and they were closed. i called my insurance company luckily i was covered and they sent someone over then the next day because obviously it was too late and nothing was open, at the tire place the next day the second one fell of glad i was already at the tire place when it happened and not driving again. but it was both tire pistons at on the right side of the car passenger side from the driver's side and the back tire of the right side. i called the dealership that same day they were fixing my vehicle and they told me to bring in the two parts and submit a claim and i could get re-imbursed for it with my receipt. and i went in today to the dealership like the manager from the dealership said and he told me i had to call a 1-800 number to submit the claim they said that they are not willing to reimburse me for it. | |||

| Driver side floor has had approx 1-2 inches of water after raining on multiple occasions. local jeep dealer said the sunroof drain was clogged. this has never happened while driving, only when the vehicle is parked. it's pretty pricy to have these drains unclogged and from reading all the other complaints about this same problem on edmunds, it is a consistent service that needs done. i am very frustrated because this sounds like a defect on chrysler's part, but nothing has been done about it. when this water floods my floor it stinks in the vehicle. i also notice flies and gnats. i am afraid of mold, dry rot and electrical issues. my radio is going out and i believe the water has something to do with this. i never had problems with the radio until this started. the screen is no longer clear, the gps doesn't work, the uconnect hands free doesnt work properly anymore and the radio randomly changes stations on its own. | |||

| As in many previous year models jeep has allowed its commander to be manufactured with interior door handles attached to very thin and brittle plastic door panels. this allows the door handles to break loose from the panels and make the handle inoperable. in order to exit the vehicle you have to open the window and use the outside handle.this condition obviously can present a very unsafe situation especially in an emergency situation . it happens to all four doors as time goes on so that it becomes dangerous not only for the driver but all the occupants of the vehicle.jeep has not found it in their best interest to recognize this obvious defect therefore you must go thru a long complicated procedure to make any type of claim with no guarantee of a resolution in your favor.i would suggest this condition be determined a danger to the occupants of the vehicle before someone gets seriously hurt or dies because they can't get out the door. in reading various complaints at jeep commander .com there are hundreds of the same senerios playing out in the same models that jeep manufactures. please try and help correct a serious and dangerous oversite in the design and production of these vehicles. thank you | |||

| I was driving in my community on a local street at rate of 45 miles hour. for no reason, my 2006 jeep commander stalled and i had no power or anything control of the car. scary to say the least. i had to pull over to the side of the road and restart my car. now, when i try to start it, the horn will not stop and i cannot turn off my fog lamps or high beams. now i am mad and want answers. i pay a lot of money to keep this car in good shape, now this. | |||

| When i bought my 2006 jeep commander from burns motors i did not notice that the driver door handle (plastic cup where handle goes) was cracked. sure enough when my husband was driving he leaned his knee on the door and there was a loud pop and handle cup came off in about 3-4 pieces. i then noticed that the passenger door handle cup was also cracked, so within a few months it came off in several pieces too. now with about 2 years with this vehicle, i have all 4 door handles broken. i have also gotten an estimate at the dealership when i took it for service and got an estimate of about 1,200 for 2 doors only. i have also check for parts online and you need to a door to get this piece which ranges from 600 to 1000 dollars for 1 door. now i am starting to get very concerned for the saftey issues since i have 3 kids and wouldn't even what to think, what would happen if i needed to get out in case of an emergency. i have also had my passenger companions find it very frustrating to open from outside or wait for somene to open door for them. there should be a safety recall since we are a lot of customers with the same issue and nothing has been done from chrysler company. thanks for taking the time to read my concern. greatly appreciated and hope something gets done to help the many customers like me that are concern about their safety. | |||

| The driver side door latch of our 2006 jeep commander 4x4 suffered a failure causing the door to not be able to be opened from the inside of the car posing a significant safety risk. the door latch is a plastic pull which is part of the one-piece molded plastic door panel. the plastic behind our door latch started to crack over time and upon a family member closing the door and the door panel coming in contact with the individual's leg, the door latch completely detached from the door panel causing it to float inside the door cavity. the door latch then fell apart and the only way to open the driver side door is to reach inside the hole in the cavity to find what the door latch was attached to. having the door latch only secured to thin molded plastic of the door panel is a design which led to our safety failure and we are not the only individuals with this issue. upon researching online, there are dozens of other individuals who have had one if not multiple door latch failures in early 2006 jeep commanders causing a safety risk. the issues occurs at various mileage points and often with little to no wear/tear and it appears dealerships are not consistently replacing these parts under warranty. one example of multiple people that have this issue can be found on the four pages of comments here: http://www.jeepcommander.com/forums/showthread.php?t=656 as the door panels and door latch appears to be either poorly engineered or poorly manufacturered leading to a safety risk, we wanted to submit this complaint form in hopes that this safety issue will be addressed, possibly as a recall. thank you for your time. | |||

| The door handle has completely broken off the driver's side door. there was no abuse to this door at all. i have searched for a replacement part and the design requires that the entire door panel be replaced. this was changed the following model year as chrysler knew it was a major defect. this appears to be a very common problem for owners of this year & model of jeep. | |||

| We own a 2006 jeep commander . took real good care of this car.it only has 40,000 miles on it and all four of the door panel have broke i mean into pieces 3 to the point the door latch has dropped down. the first one was when i just shut the door and then notice a crack,and then the rest did the same thing i an concern about my grandkids in the back,if they needed to exit in a hurry they could not.it takes a few minutes to get the latch just right to open the door. we also have had to have the rear end fixes twice.,roaring noise.jeep does not seem to want to do anything about this problem. so don't buy a jeep. a bad fault in car design. | |||

| Front and back door handles break under not much use. they are plastic and believe this is a design and material flaw. wen they break, the only way to exit the vehicle is to roll down the window and reach outside and open the door or to exit through another door. this has happened twice to me and from speaking with others, it seems this is a common problem. what makes it worse is that jeep does not sell just a replacement handle. they make you buy an entire interior door panel at $600+ to fix not including labor. my fear is that this is not just an inconvenience, but a major potential safety problem. i would encourage nhtsa to investigate and would recommend a fix and ultimate recall. this is very dangerous, particularly if you are in an accident situation. | |||

| Purchased 2006 jeep commander on 8/20/11 and i do not drive it on a daily. however, after driving for less than an hour on 8/27/11 the dash lit up with the message transmission over temp, after googling i noticed the transmission message is a common problem in jeep vehicles, mainly commanders. i also read that after several transmission over temp messages the vehicle will stall, a couple of people reported it doing so in the middle of heavy traffic flow. also, after stalling the car will not restart until it's left sitting for hours. some have let their jeep sit for 4 days before getting it to restart and others for weeks/months. about a month later it rained for the 1st time since i've had the jeep and i noticed the handrail, located top left above passenger side, was dripping onto the dashboard and the floor was wet as well. googled the water incident and found hundreds of complaints regarding wet front interior after rain (in jeep commanders, various years). some complained of mold growth and stated there seems to be no solution to the problems; mechanics are stumped at both wet interiors after rain and transmission over temp message. both incidents have made me a bit nervous since i have a 10 year old riding with me majority of the time. i've contacted the jeep corporation and jeep asked me to contact nhtsa. not sure what steps to take at this point. | |||

| I purchased the 2006 commander in june 2010. the first 6 weeks i had the vehicle i loved it. the first incident i had with the vehicle was the service park assist warning came on and stayed on for two days, then went off on its own prior to getting an appointment to have it checked. the next incident happened when i was idling in traffic at a stoplight. every indicator light on the dash came on and the vehicle started to stall but did not completely stall out. since that episode i have had issues with the driver side front window and passenger side rear window not functioning properly (at times won't roll up or down from either control). more recently i have had increasing episodes (two to three times per month) of the dash lighting up, headlights dimming and the vehicle losing power (so far always while parked or shifting from park to drive), as well as the service park assist warning and window issues. after hearing of a coworker with a 2007 commander having some of the same issues i began searching the internet and have found numerous complaints of the same issues as mine. i am afraid to drive this vehicle with my children inside in the event that it would stall out on the highway and i would not be able to control it. i spoke with the dealer that sold me the vehicle yesterday and they have agreed to look at it free of charge this morning since there is no warranty on it now, but i still am not sure i want to keep this vehicle any longer. chrysler needs to recall these vehicles and fix this issue. i used to be a die hard jeep fan...but no longer! i am surprised that i have not found any reports of death or serious injury as a result of these electrical issues with this particular model. | |||

| While opening the right rear passenger door of my 2006 jeep commander the inside door handle broke, this prevented the passenger from exiting the vehicle. i contacted the jeep dealer and they informed me that they did not have any issues relating to the door handle. i removed the door panel and made the necessary repairs. two months later the left rear handle broke and then the right front passenger handle broke. i made repairs to both of those handles as well. last month the right rear handle has broken again, i have did a temporary repair on the handle. my fears are that if i was to get in some type of accident where the passenger(s) would have to exit the vehicle in a hurry that the handles will fail and the passenger(s) will not be able to exit the vehicle in a timely manner and could result in the passenger(s) being trapped inside the vehicle. there should be some type of safety recall. | |||

| 2006 jeep commander 4.7 liter having issues with engine stalling when stopped and also when starting to apply pressure to gas from stop in the 5-10 mph range. does not matter if the vehicle has just been started or completely warmed up. nothing i am doin is causing this too short to hit keys with knee. have to turn vehicle completely off and start back up. have had vehicle for about 6 months since june 2010 now and have had the incident happen at least 20 times. have read on numerous forums of this incident happening and no fix for this found yet please get the ball rolling to get a fix before someone gets killed | |||

| Interior door handles break easily, and come apart. this is a safety concern when trying to leave vehicle in an emergency- car fire, accident, or if vehicle falls into a body of water. in this vehicle, 3 of the 4 interior handles have easily broken from the door panels. they are built weaker than a child's toy car. | |||

| I have a 2006 jeep commander limited v8 5.7l hemi. it is a low mileage vehicle, always garaged and never been in an accident. about 6 months ago it began stalling when going from reverse to drive. the electrical did not go off, the engine simply stalled. this happened countless times easily 20+ occurances. we took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong with it, they told us to use higher octane fuel and they updated the software in the car... a week later my wife was at work and it would not even turn over even though all of the electrical components worked fine. we had it towed and they replaced the battery and told us that was the problem. yesterday i was driving the truck, it was in drive and as i slowed to a stop it stalled - again the electrical remained on. we took it to the dealer this morning and they told us it was not part of the original recall and they needed to keep it, but couldn't tell us what was wrong, we called chrysler and they couldn't tell us anything either. i have two young children and this could be horrible if this happened on the highway. | |||

| After completing a one mile trip without incident, i got back in my 2006 3.7 liter v6 4x4 jeep commander and started it up. i then put it into reverse and began to back up when my power-steering failed. i put it back in park and turned off the engine and then restarted the engine. the power-steering was functioning again, so i put it in reverse and began to back up. after about five feet the power-steering failed again, then the anti-lock brake system failed and it was incredibly hard to brake. the abs light also came on. i then backed into a parking spot and turned off the engine and then restarted it. the power-steering was still failing and the abs light still lit up. the engine then died after about 30 seconds. i then attempted to restart the vehicle and it wouldn't start and the red alarm light came on. the battery is good. *tr | |||

| My brakes pulsate when i pump them coming down hills. the dealership continues to tell me there is nothing wrong with my brakes. it is really bad when i am coming down a mountain and i am scared that they will fail on me. it has happened every time i've traveled to see my daughter in college in the mountains. i've tried going very slow and pumping as to not pick up speed. i am very concerned for my safety. *tr | |||
