Odi has received 76 vehicle owner complaints alleging incidents of engine stall while driving in model year (my) 2006 through 2007 jeep commander vehicles (subject vehicles).some of the complaints reported one or more incidents of engine stall with a simultaneous loss of some or all lighting systems, including headlamps.two engine stalls resulted in a vehicle crash.in its response to a request for information, daimlerchrysler corporation (dcc) indicated that it has not determined the cause of engine stalling in the subject vehicles and that it hasformed a multi-disciplinary task force to investigate the issue. this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea07-007) to further assess the frequency, scope and potential safety consequences of the alleged defect.

On may 5, 2008, chrysler llc (chrysler) submitted a defect information report to nhtsa concerning an engine calibration issue that could result in engine stall in approximately 24,461 model year (my) 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with the 4.7l v-8 engine and built from february 25, 2005 through january 11, 2006.according to chrysler, the powertrain control module (pcm) was programmed with software that may allow the engine to stall during certain operating conditions.chrysler dealers will reprogram the pcm software in the recalled vehicles. information provided by chrysler during pe07-009 and ea07-007 indicated that a revised engine calibration was implemented in production effective january 12, 2006 for the my 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 4.7l v-8 engines.odi's analysis ofconsumer complaints, field reports and other data related to field experience with engine stalling in my 2006 through 2007 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 3.7l, 4.7l and 5.7l engines identified an elevated rate of stalling incidents in the my 2006 vehicles equipped with 4.7l engines that were manufactured before the calibration change.odi interviewed over 70 consumers who reported stalling incidents in early production my 2006 4.7l vehicles.information gathered from those interviews indicated that the stalling incidents were occurring at various speeds, often occurred during turns and typically occurred more than once.the interviews did not identify any concerns with restartability. although the early my 2006 production vehicles with 4.7l engines make up only about 15 percent of all my 2006 through 2007 jeep commanders built by chrysler, they were responsible for 465 of the 854 reported stalling incidents (54%), 6 of the 12 crash incidents (50%) and the only injury claim.the stalling rate for the recalled vehicles is 1.90 percent, almost 7 times greater than the rate in the remaining population (0.28 percent).chrysler's recall covers the vehicles with the elevated stalling rate.the remaining vehicles have relatively low rates of stalling and do not exhibit any signs of aggravating factors such as problems with restart. odi also analyzed complaints alleging concerns with loss of lighting coincident to stalling incidents.this analysis identified seven stalling incidents where loss of exterior lighting was alleged.no specific cause was identified in these incidents and there was no discernible pattern regarding engine, vehicle production options, build range or failure trend. this investigation is closed with chrysler's recall.

While driving on an interstate at 65mph my check engine light came on, a message stating service parking assist system appeared, and drnp was blocked on the front dash. the vehicle lost power and acceleration and began to feel as if the emergency brake was applied at full force. i pulled off the highway, turned the car off and back on and the check engine light remains on. online research suggests this is a common problem involving the electronic shifting module and/or connection issues with the rear parking assist sensors. this pervasive problem should be rectified with a recall at no cost to customers.

On multiple occasions my 2007 jeep commander with 4.7 liter v8 has stalled without warning. it has happened at idle, while slowing, while accelerating, and while driving at freeway speeds (60-70 mph). each time it has restarted after taking the transmission out of gear, turning the key to the off position, and restarting the engine. this is potentially very dangerous if it happens under the wrong circumstances since you, of course, unexpectedly lose power assist on both brakes and steering when the engine dies. *tr

Just purchased used 2007 commander sport v6 at 58458 miles... drove it on vacation from detroit to wilmington, nc approx. 900 miles. trip went without incident until we drove down to see the ocean turned off the car, walked along the beach for about a half an hour, came back to the car, turned the ignition and absolutely nothing. however, all the electrical components seem to be functioning except the starter. at the dealer now and waiting to see what they tell me. i spent 25 plus years working in dealerships, mostly chrysler, not as a mechanic but i had my fair share of exposure to the service department. signed, stranded in nc *tr

Vehicle stalled in the middle of highway traffic. warning on dash states service park assist system.
10/15/2012450001
After a schedule tune up, where two coil packs were replaced, and a pcm software update was performed our 2007 jeep commander began stalling at slow speeds. usually under 20 mph or at a stop when the engine is at or near idle speeds, the engine will obruptly stall without warning. there is no check engine light and no error code. our local jeep dealer has made several repair attempts including replacing the pcm, and shielding the engine wiring harness with aluminum foil. the problem continues. the key must be cycled to the 'off' position to restart the engine. the engine has stalled at high speeds a few times making for a very dangerous situation. *tr

The car has been stalling over the past 4 months. normally the stalling has occurred when the car was idling. last week the car did the same thing but at a much higher rate of speed (60 mph). the car shut off and i lost power steering. multiple lights have been coming in the dash over the past few months and my automatic windshield wipers have stopped working. also, my automatic gate opener sometimes just will not work. there are similar issues with 2006 and 2008 vehicles and both of those have recalls, but i noticed that the 2007 does not. *tr

While driving on the highway around 50-55mph the engine shuts down with no warning. there will be some slight hesitation as the dashboard lights up and all power is lost. have been able to coast over to the side of the road before coming to a complete stop where i can then turn the car off. this has happened 4 times now and can be potentially very hazardous. i am able to restart the car immediately and be back on my way with no problem. has been happening once every week or so. have taken truck to the dealership twice where they tell me they can not duplicate the problem and they do not now what is causing it. *tr

Purchased used in spring 2008 with approx. 30k miles, in spring of 2010 had several weeks of issues ranging from vehicle cutting off randomly, vehicle jumping while at stop lights, hesitating to go into 2nd and 3rd gear and then the 'service park assist' light would illuminate along with the gear indicator lights being all highlighted. obviously the dealer could not reproduce this but replaced the 'shifter mechanisim / shift lever housing, automatic transmission console shifter' and now in january of 2013 at 83369 miles, while driving home from lunch we could not get the vehicle to come out of first and the gear indicator lights were all highlighted. and for about 2 or more months have had the same issues as before with the vehicle cutting off, acceleration issues, jumping while in drive at a stop light. waiting for the dealership to call back because its a jeep and you cant have newer jeeps repaired by anyone other than a dealership. complete racket. not to mention that you can't even check the transmission fluid, that has to be done by a dealership also. will not buy jeep again! ever!!!!! *tr

I was driving home from picking up my daughter from a school event when suddenly my car slowed down on its own down to 10 mph. then the car completely stopped. on the control console it only read service park assist and the drive position controls where all highlighted and boxed out (drnp). i lost all control of the vehicle other than turning the wheel. i tried to accelerate by pressing the gas and it just revved the engine and did nothing else. i swerved off the road and hit a median that took out the tire and left damage to the left of the car under carriage. i had to shift the gear into park and back to drive in order for the car to start up again. i took the car to a local jeep chrysler dodge service depot and had it ran for a diagnostic for at which time they told me that it was a common issue found in this model and earlier models and that it wasn't covered by the power train that the vehicle would need $1100.00 in repairs to fix an electronic transformer shift modulator. i had just purchased the car on october 31 from a jeep chrysler dodge dealership and less than three weeks later the car is for crap. and the dealership refused to fix the problem and jeep has not issued a recall for this issue but they have for the 2006 model. this problem is life threatening. it can occur at anytime at any speed. if i were on a expressway my children and i would probably be dead. jeep needs to be pursed for this issue and forced to fix the damage on any vehicles reporting this issue. you can also refer to claims 10379415 10381239. there are also hundreds more complaints online at sites like jeepcommander.com. *tr

At various times without warning we lose power to the motor. can not accelerate. engine sputters. happens from dead stop, idling, or without warning driving in city or highway traffic. been looked at by multiple mechanics who are stumped. check engine light is on and sometimes flashes plus almost all dashboard warning lights turn on sometimes. this happened when i first purchased the vehicle and they wound up changing the transmission. *tr

I have had my 07 jeep commander (3.6 v6) since january 2008. i have notice numerous times while driving from a complete stop, that my vehicle will lose power and start to sputter when i try to apply the gas and the car moves very slow as in less than 20mph. this has happened to me numerous times and makes me very uncomfortable driving knowing that my car can stop and leave me vulnerable to being rear-ended at intersections or common stops. i notice when this happens that my vehicle cluster displays service park assist and the service park assist light comes on uncontrollably and at the same time my dash/ cluster also displays ( [p][r][n][d] ) all at once as if the vehicle does not know what gear it is in. this is not acceptable for a vehicle that is supposed to provide a safe driving experience. i also find it very disappointing that numerous people all over the united states and internet/ forums all have this problem and chrysler tries to narrow it down to a select year. model. and engine. my vehicle has the same issues as the previous recall for the 2007 4.7 v8 engines, yet chrysler ignores the community of jeep commander owners with the 3.6 v6 engine that have the same problem. there is also a tsb (18-004-09 rev. a) that describes the clunking and hesitation you feel when trying to get up to speed. this is not something a customer should have to pay for. my vehicle is a 2007 with less than 40,000 miles on it and i should be able to enjoy my vehicle safely during this time period. another problem is that the vehicle does this at random so you can't just take it to the dealership and show them the problem. i'm sure they would gladly take my money and let me spend 1000+ dollars for new parts, but i have an 8yr/80,000 mile warranty purchased from chrysler and will not pay for diagnostic after diagnostic to try and replicate a problem that is clearly there... *tr

This has happened to me. i am a mother, wife , daughter. the bad thing of this situation is that i had this replaced once before i had 31,505 miles on it and the ems electric transmission shift module had to be replaced . 4 yrs later mileage at 82,000 miles the same part has to be replaced. i have contacted chrysler and all they can say we are sorry there is nothing i can do for you. this part is no longer under warranty and informed that the part (68021352) was not included in a recall. this malfunctions has caused me to no longer feel safe in my car. i don't want to drive my car with my daughter in it. with out warning this has happened one to many times. this part should be recalled when i had the vehicle serviced back in 2008 i paid 100.00 now today when i had it repaired it cost 1000.00. funny isn't it that over 4 yrs this part has doubled in price. and the mechanic at chrysler says to me oh yeah i've seen this alot on this model. *tr

While driving 70mph down the highway, my car suddenly stalled. i was forced to make an emergency stop on the shoulder of the highway. unlucky for me, where my car decided to stall was near the off ramp of the highway, under a bridge. it was quite a dangerous position to be in. the jeep dealership decided that it was a throttle positioning sensor. several months later and my car is randomly stalling again and the dealership does not understand why. i've had my shift assembly fully replaced as well as a new starter. i don't understand the issues that i am facing and why so little is known by the jeep dealership when this suv has been out for several years now. *tr

Problem started with vehicle losing power on acceleration from dead stop. it did that twice before the check engine light came on as i was pulling out into heavy traffic. immediately took it to garage which determined code were u0404 (implausible data received from esm), p0607 (ecu internal performance) and b1a28 (ecm mismatch with skm). dealers had two shifter/esm assemblies in stock. that tells me this is a common problem as i have read on the internet that it is. this vehicle is pampered and only driven about 5k per year, mostly when i got to our hunting camp up state. repair cost $1,130.99. chrysler needs to pony up with a recall and fix this issue without cost as well as reimburse those of us who have already paid to have the defect fixed. someone could be injured or killed as a result of this defect. *tr

The service park assist light will come on and them all the gear indicators on instrument panel will light up and vehicle stall when driving and lose all power. this has happened multiple of times at different speeds. scan code only shows electronic shift module (esm) is bad. my wife was pulling onto the highway from a side road one of the times the vehicle stalled and was almost hit by several cars. *tr

We bought this 2007 jeep commander 2 years ago and have had problems with the electronic shift module (esm) along the whole way. the vehicle's check engine light comes on followed by all of the shift locations on the dash lighted up. next the service park assist system warning on the dash. the next thing is the engine bogs down and you cannot go over 20 mph. we pull off the road and restart the engine and continue on until it happens again. this is a major design flaw as it has almost caused 2 potentially fatal car accidents on the highway with my wife and baby. please take care of this asap as i cannot afford the $1400 dollar repair to fix the esm that could end my wife and baby's life.

While driving down the road the jeep shut off, complete loss of power, brakes and steering then after a few seconds turned back on. this had happened 4 times within 10 mile. this is not the first time that this has happened. i had taken it to the dealership so they could plug it into their computer. the results were negative and could not find any problems. searching online, there are several other jeep owners that are having the same problem. there needs to be a recall on these vehicles before someone gets hurt or killed.

This problem began in the fall of 2008. typically, after shifting the car into drive, the car would not accelerate past idle speed, have a moderate bucking, all gear selector lights on the dash were boxed in, and an error message would read service park assist system. the problem was serviced under warranty. the dealership checked wires and connectors, and replaced the bezel assembly on shifter. this seemed to solve the problem until recently. beginning a few months ago, around the beginning of 2012, i am having the same problem with the exact same symptoms: all gear selector lights illuminated, no acceleration for 10-15 seconds, and service park assist system message. the problem occurs almost always in the morning on the way to work, school, etc.. it has never lasted longer than 15-20 seconds on any day, and seems to occur approximently one to two times per week, over the last 4 weeks. i have an appointment later this week at a dealer to check out the problem. but reading several internet sources, this obviously not an isolated issue, as there are many accounts of the same problem.

While driving 65 mph on the interstate, vehicle lost power. dash display message appeared service park assist system and vehicle gear display indicated the p r n d were all illuminated. the engine stayed running but would not respond to the gas pedal, decelerating. turned on hazard lights and pulled over, placed vehicle in park, shifted to drive, and continued as normal. a short time later, the check engine light came on. the problem is intermittent, and has happened many times since then and in many different driving situations. for example, after pulling into traffic on a highway, the vehicle would not accelerate, causing the traffic behind to nearly slam into us. if acceleration had been available as normal, this would not have been an issue. another example, the problem happened during heavy rush hour interstate traffic, causing the need to cross several lanes to reach a breakdown lane. it has happened immediatley upon starting the vehicle and after the vehicle has been running normally for a long time. it is very unpredictable. the vehicle is dangerous and cannot be trusted to provide power or acceleration when it is needed. private shop checked the fault codes and replaced the transmission control module which did not fix the problem. internet research shows this exact problem with these exact symptoms is common and widespread in the 2007 jeep commander and appears to indicate a faulty electronic shifter module. chrysler response to the problem is hit and miss, some dealers acknowledging they have seen this before, others claiming they have never seen it and the problem is isolated and not widespread. there needs to be a safety recall on this dangerous issue before someone is hurt or killed, if they have not already. we used this vehicle to transport our children and now we can't even trust it to safely get us to the shop to have it repaired.

My 2007 jeep commander turns off o me when i'm at stop signs or slowing down without any warning. today i went in for an oil change and told the service advisor about the problem. he acted like that was the first time he has heard about the issue. he asked me how often it happens and i said a few times a week. he then said that the vehicle would have to be brought in while it's happening. really!!!! how am i suppose to take it in when it happens or before it happens! the vehicle doesn't warn me and it turns in right away as if nothing has ever happened! it is so frustrating!! i've had it for less than a year and we are already experiencing problems! i don't feel safe driving the vehicle with my baby! i've read all the complaints about the same issue!! this needs to be fixed! i think this vehicle is a lemon!

The vehicle was purchased new october 2007, also the extended warranty 5year 60,000 was purchased at the same time. the major problems began with the transmission electronic system, the removed and replaced something inside. meanwhile the vehicle has been serviced and maintained by grava chrysler jeep since new the first time we complained and had it serviced was january 2011 and the last report was february 20,2012 and they still don't know what to fix..last year while driving home on interstate 93 speed approx 55 the vehicle lost power and we almost were struck by another vehicle, we had to come to a complete stop, place the vehicle in park to restart.would not restart in neutral. the tech and service manager said it should have, well it didn't. they replaced the ignition switch, it happened again, they replaced some module, it happened again, they changed the fuel pump, it happened again for the sixth (6) time.they kept it for 10 days and were not able to find the problem, no code ,no problem that was their answer.by the way they put over 500 miles on the vehicle this time.

Engine stalling or not starting. engine stalled while making a turn. car started immediately after but engine and oil lights remained on. service deparrtment replaced censors but that did not correct the problem. sporadically stalls at take off, when slowing down to turn/stop, when cruise control is disengaged at highway speeds. on highway, hit brake to disengage cc and switch lanes, car stalled, turned the key without putting it in park or stopping and engine kicked back in. car wouldn't start on one occasion and service department replaced alternator but problem still persists. service department replaced ignition switch but problem persists with car not starting. stuck at highway rest stop for 2 hours until car re-started. service department stated that computer needed to be replaced, then said that they weren't getting that code the next time we had problems. have replaced various parts but problem still persists. service department states that they have not been able to re-create the problem while driving.

Recently experienced a . service park assist system error with total loss of forward momentuem at about 15 mph. was able to pull over, place in park and continue going. however engine light is on, so headed to dealer monday. i'm greatly concerned if this happens at high speed and with family in the car. reading complaints, this is higly possible and there appears to be no real solution. help?!!

I had a fearful incident as i was driving on the highway in the passing lane in my 2007 jeep commander going approx. 60 miles per hour. when suddenly my vehicle would not accelerate at all , it remained at 60 miles an hour for about a mile with oncoming traffic on all sides of me. an alert was displayed very quickly stating service parking assist system and my panel highlighted all gears at once. i was able to slow down and get off the highway. i took all the side roads to get home and my jeep began to hesitate like it was going to stall on me. the next day my engine light was on and remained on and left me stalled on the highway . i contacted my dealer to get it in for diagnostic testing and it was determined that the electronic shift module was bad and needs to be replaced. i had purchased the extended warranty and was informed that the module was not a covered part. the estimated price was $1025.

The prnd gears lit up with boxes around them - the service parking assist brake came on as well.... i could not accelerate at all after the light turned green - had to turn on hazard lights and turn vehicle off and back on - worked fine for 10 minutes or so and then the check engine light came on, it has been on ever since. called the dealership about this they asked me to bring it in for diagnosing, but hesitant because of all the same kind of stories that i have read on this issue. going to have to give in though, this is a major safety concern of mine now... have not seen a recall for this even though someone can certainly have a devastating accident, not willing to take that chance... love my vehicle, but now i hate the aggravation that this is causing.. with all the horror stories with the same sort of issue you would think that jeep would take care of this, i guess that this is why they discontinued the commander?

I have a 2007 jeep commander and it is less than four years old and i have had the starter replaced 4 times. jeep can't explain why they can't fully fix the problem and they refuse to acknowledge that this is an issue with the commanders at large and not my specific vehicle. in addition to having had the starter replaced 4 times, i have also had the electronic shifting module replaced as well and the crankshaft. my commander has less than 40,000 miles on it and has been well maintained since i purchased it brand new. jeep has failed to address my concerns and refuses to accept responsibility for selling me a vehicle. jeep suggested i purchase a new vehicle and i find this preposterous due to the fact that the car is less than four years old. the commander is clearly defective and jeep needs to take responsibility for it. instead, jeep refuses to accept responsibility and they decided to rectify the problem by halting production.

I purchased a 2007 jeep commander on 1/10/2011.the car has been in the shop 5 times because it stalls while in transit. the car while in drive at various speeds max that i have experienced was 55 mph shuts off. all the electrical, everything turns off. at this point you must hope that the car behind you doesnt hit you, you must put the car in park, turn it back on then put in back in drive whilepraying you do not get hit from behind. this has happened 4 times within the 90 days that i have owned it. i am told that they dont know what it is. i cannot imagine a car that just turns off when it wants to. i am afraid to drive this car.

Vehicle was leaving a stop sign entering a feeder road with 50 mph speed limit. upon accelerating, the vehicle lunged, and died. it restarted and was driven to it's original destination. we called chrysler after she returned home and they told us to take it to a dealership for a diagnostics. dealership says it is not covered by any recall and that the throttle body needs cleaning for $250. (a $2 can of cleaner). this same vehicle stalled twice in the same trip one week earlier but i considered it as part of the cold weather. after reading all of this, they have an issue with the 2007 hemi's and have not fessed up to it.

While driving at slow speed such as slowing to stop or taking off from a dead stop the truck stalls and has to be put in park and restarted. this happens quite frequently, and when driving on interstates when trying to accelerate the truck also stalls or has a power failure where it almost feels like it its a governed speed and the engine won't let you speed up. the computer now is having issues saying that the engine coolant is too cold, thought the thermostat is working fine as well as the gauges inside the truck. the computer is also giving a code of an error with the barometric pressure.

Leaving a parking lot and accelerating as i drove. all of the sudden the vehicle started stalling and would not accelerate even if the gas pedal was pushed. the check engine light came on as well. then the vehicle started accelerating back to normal, but the check engine light reamined on. i took it to auto zone to have a diagnostic check done and they gave me a code and said that it was not a part that they carried only from the manufacturer. it has happened a couple of times before today and on the dash it would say service park assist and the gears prndl are all highlighted.the same thing happened to me about 2 years ago and it was the shifter. it only had about 40,000 miles. it had to be completely replaced. it was not covered by my extended warranty because it was an external part of the transmission. it cost close to $600.00. now it is happening again and i don't want to replace it again if it is going to happen again in a year or two.

2007 jeep commander, started with service park assist light coming on along with the check engine light. took it in for service, they could not determine the problem so they reset the system. two days later the same thing began to happen again, along with the lights around the p n r d on the display coming on all together, the car also then began to not want to accelerate after a certain point. almost acting like it was not wanting to shift to the next gear. this happened for 8 months, still no service was done because they were unable to recreate the problem. it began to occur while driving and coming to a stop and starting to go forward again. causing problems crossing intersections or traffic. have now been told to replace the transmission control module, which we did. this did not fix the issue. in the last week were told to replace the electronic shift module.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) 2007 jeep commander [xxx] turn the ignition key and does not want to start, did it in october 2009 and march 10th 2010. all power is on, lights, radio, boosted battery, this is not the issue, it finally turned on idled extremely high, i turned it off and tried to start it over and over and over and would not start. by reviewing the internet other owners of the 2007 jeep commnader are experiencing ;stalling and the car not starting, it appers to be an alternator issue, but chrysler is saying they don't know why this is occurring. my car was towed to south point dodge, in austin texas for diagnostic analyzing, they have not told me what the problem is. i am concerned if this issue is nationwide and chrysler has not done a recall. this is a major safety issue if cars are stalling on the highways and not starting, could cause a death. please look into this matter immediately.  Transmission stalling while driving- according the dealership service this is a problem with the electronic shift module. this has happened several times and is also a noted problem in these vehicles. this same vehicle has already been recalled for similar issue, but only for the bigger engine size. chrysler has informed me that they will not investigate even though it is the same problem in a different engine size. the vehicle can be traveling at 70 mph on the interstate and stall without warning. it will not go any further without stopping, turning off the engine and restarting. this happens several times daily. i have tried to get fixed and work with the problem, but after almost being rearended by an 18wheeler on the interstate today, enough is enough. it is for 2007 jeep commander 3.7lt. *tr

This is my 2nd complaint to you guys about this frightening and dangerous issue of my jeep commander engine stalling problems. i almost had another accident by driving 35 mph and the engine just stalls, power and lighting flashes on and off, then fails. no power over the car and the steering wheel locks up! the car behind me had to veer sharply to keep from running into the back of me. it was an unexpected stall for other vehicles as well as myself. i have tried to get help, but to no avail. i am scared to continue to drive this dangerous auto and need some help either replacing it or jeep to take it back! also, it still jerks forward, (with my foot on the brake!) while i'm sitting at a light, almost hitting the pedestrians walking in the crosswalk in front of me. there are many complaints on the internet with very similar and like complaints and no one is doing anything about it. i guess they're waiting for a tragedy, instead of trying to prevent one. please advise. *tr
