ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
EA07007CHRYSLER GROUP LLC04/27/200705/07/2008ENGINE STALLING08V203000
On may 5, 2008, chrysler llc (chrysler) submitted a defect information report to nhtsa concerning an engine calibration issue that could result in engine stall in approximately 24,461 model year (my) 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with the 4.7l v-8 engine and built from february 25, 2005 through january 11, 2006.according to chrysler, the powertrain control module (pcm) was programmed with software that may allow the engine to stall during certain operating conditions.chrysler dealers will reprogram the pcm software in the recalled vehicles. information provided by chrysler during pe07-009 and ea07-007 indicated that a revised engine calibration was implemented in production effective january 12, 2006 for the my 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 4.7l v-8 engines.odi's analysis ofconsumer complaints, field reports and other data related to field experience with engine stalling in my 2006 through 2007 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 3.7l, 4.7l and 5.7l engines identified an elevated rate of stalling incidents in the my 2006 vehicles equipped with 4.7l engines that were manufactured before the calibration change.odi interviewed over 70 consumers who reported stalling incidents in early production my 2006 4.7l vehicles.information gathered from those interviews indicated that the stalling incidents were occurring at various speeds, often occurred during turns and typically occurred more than once.the interviews did not identify any concerns with restartability. although the early my 2006 production vehicles with 4.7l engines make up only about 15 percent of all my 2006 through 2007 jeep commanders built by chrysler, they were responsible for 465 of the 854 reported stalling incidents (54%), 6 of the 12 crash incidents (50%) and the only injury claim.the stalling rate for the recalled vehicles is 1.90 percent, almost 7 times greater than the rate in the remaining population (0.28 percent).chrysler's recall covers the vehicles with the elevated stalling rate.the remaining vehicles have relatively low rates of stalling and do not exhibit any signs of aggravating factors such as problems with restart. odi also analyzed complaints alleging concerns with loss of lighting coincident to stalling incidents.this analysis identified seven stalling incidents where loss of exterior lighting was alleged.no specific cause was identified in these incidents and there was no discernible pattern regarding engine, vehicle production options, build range or failure trend. this investigation is closed with chrysler's recall.

Jeep commander stalls randomly while driving. this is the 5th time in less than a week. when the vehicle stalls, the steering locks up and the car has to be put into park in order to restart it, and is difficult to restart when this happens. this is a major safety issue because the car is moving when it stalls. *tr

As i was driving my commander, it started to sputter and shift gears erratically and then died. the engine light was on as i pulled over to the side of the road. after i turned the car off completely, i tried to restart the car to continue to work. as soon as i put the vehicle in gear, it stalled once again. on the third try, i was able to place my vehicle in gear and complete my drive to work but the engine light remained on. this same scenario has happened five times since the original incident.

My 2007 jeep commander turns off o me when i'm at stop signs or slowing down without any warning. today i went in for an oil change and told the service advisor about the problem. he acted like that was the first time he has heard about the issue. he asked me how often it happens and i said a few times a week. he then said that the vehicle would have to be brought in while it's happening. really!!!! how am i suppose to take it in when it happens or before it happens! the vehicle doesn't warn me and it turns in right away as if nothing has ever happened! it is so frustrating!! i've had it for less than a year and we are already experiencing problems! i don't feel safe driving the vehicle with my baby! i've read all the complaints about the same issue!! this needs to be fixed! i think this vehicle is a lemon!

The vehicle was purchased new october 2007, also the extended warranty 5year 60,000 was purchased at the same time. the major problems began with the transmission electronic system, the removed and replaced something inside. meanwhile the vehicle has been serviced and maintained by grava chrysler jeep since new the first time we complained and had it serviced was january 2011 and the last report was february 20,2012 and they still don't know what to fix..last year while driving home on interstate 93 speed approx 55 the vehicle lost power and we almost were struck by another vehicle, we had to come to a complete stop, place the vehicle in park to restart.would not restart in neutral. the tech and service manager said it should have, well it didn't. they replaced the ignition switch, it happened again, they replaced some module, it happened again, they changed the fuel pump, it happened again for the sixth (6) time.they kept it for 10 days and were not able to find the problem, no code ,no problem that was their answer.by the way they put over 500 miles on the vehicle this time.

The prnd gears lit up with boxes around them - the service parking assist brake came on as well.... i could not accelerate at all after the light turned green - had to turn on hazard lights and turn vehicle off and back on - worked fine for 10 minutes or so and then the check engine light came on, it has been on ever since. called the dealership about this they asked me to bring it in for diagnosing, but hesitant because of all the same kind of stories that i have read on this issue. going to have to give in though, this is a major safety concern of mine now... have not seen a recall for this even though someone can certainly have a devastating accident, not willing to take that chance... love my vehicle, but now i hate the aggravation that this is causing.. with all the horror stories with the same sort of issue you would think that jeep would take care of this, i guess that this is why they discontinued the commander?

Over the past few weeks while driving the vehicle will flash a warning saying service park assist system. when this happens the gear display on the dash prnd will all 4 get circled and flash and then as you are accelerating you can feel the vehicle lose speed. you can no longer accelerate the vehicle and have to coast off the road. once you stop and shift to park then back to drive it will reset and then allow you to accelerate. i was going 65 on the freeway when this happened last and this is a major safety issue. for about the past 30,000-40,000 k miles we have had issues with it shifting properly and every time we took it to the dealer they can never re create the issue. now we are receiving this warning and it actually stops accelerating on its own. it is happening more and more. we took it to the dealer since this warning now came on and they said they have never heard of it, they couldn't re create it, that it has nothing to do with the shifting and to turn off our park assist system so it doesn't happen. we are attempting a different dealer today but first thing they said is they never hear of this either. so comforting!

Purchased this vehicle used about a year ago and has been having issues for about 5 months on about 20 different occasions, and seems to be worse in stop and go traffic or at a complete stop. while driving it will stall and act as if it is going to die. it seems to be worse at a complete stop but has been gradually doing more while driving. it has completely shut down three different times. usually, the check engine light comes on. has started doing it now at accelerated speeds. replaced spark plugs with no change. took to auto zone and read nothing on their computer. it seems others are having this same issue and i cant believe there has not been a recall for this since it would cause a safety issue. it does not seem that the problem has been diagnosed correctly yet from reading the other complaints and jeep should have to be made to look into this.

My boyfriend and i were driving home from dinner and about half way home the car suddenly stopped accelerating and the speed dropped from 70 mph to 40 and kept slowing down. we had to pull over and turn the car off and then back on. the car has done this several times since and a light comes on that says service park assist. i have read up on this year, make and model and have found that this is a very common issue that has not been dealt with! this is also a very dangerous issue. i also found that it has nothing to do with the park assist but rather the transmission in the truck and that many have failed well before 50,000 miles but shortly after jeep's 35,000 mile warranty. jeep did not cover my car because i bought it used which terminated the warranty because i was not the original owner. i am very disappointed - this is my first jeep - and i have wanted a jeep for years. the car still decelerates at times - i can be in traffic or pulling off from a stop or turning a corner and all of a sudden it is not shifting or accelerating. i can't afford a new car right now but am concerned about my family's safety. please read up on the many articles and comments from people about this problem and save lives!!! with so many complaints and close-call accidents i would think that since it is 2011 something would have been done by now!

While driving at slow speed such as slowing to stop or taking off from a dead stop the truck stalls and has to be put in park and restarted. this happens quite frequently, and when driving on interstates when trying to accelerate the truck also stalls or has a power failure where it almost feels like it its a governed speed and the engine won't let you speed up. the computer now is having issues saying that the engine coolant is too cold, thought the thermostat is working fine as well as the gauges inside the truck. the computer is also giving a code of an error with the barometric pressure.

It happened shortly after purchasing my new 2007 jeep commander, it would give a hesitation while sitting at stop light or while in park like it was about to die, it would also rev up the engine like it was accelerating, we took it in a few months after we bought it, they said they found nothing wrong and did nothing at that time, it continued to do it, but we just put up with it because we figured we'd hear the same thing, (it don't happen every time we drive it, just periodically) so now, it's doing it more intensely, it's as if someone is mashing on the gas pedal while in park and also at stop lights while i have my foot on brakes, once it has jumped forward and i thought i would hit the car ahead of me. i took it in again, they reset the computer, and since, it has done it again a couple days after getting it out. i will call them back, but looking at the complaints online,it shows me something is terrible wrong with jeeps unintentionally accelerating, please help, i don't want to cause a accident or hurt myself or anyone else. i saved receipts from the dealership over this problem, please examine all our complaints, not everyone knows how to submit complaints to this agency, just look online or perhaps check every single dealership, thank you *tr

My 2007 jeep commander has stalled on me about 7 times so far, four of which almost resulted in serious accidents. it also accelerates while driving at one speed to a faster speed, almost causing me to have a rear end accident! but the worst of it all is when i am sitting at a light with my foot on the brakes and the car will jerk forward, again, almost causing a rear end accident(mind you my foot is still on the brake when this happens!) i also have a problem with the air whistling sound when all windows are rolled up i need help or i need to turn this hazard in! i have small children! *tr

I first noticed my car's engine dying out approx. 2 mo. after purchasing it. it happened at a red light, and i started it right back up, and thought nothing much of it. the engine would putter at red lights (3 times over time). this past tuesday night, i left the grocery store, and the car would not go beyond 20 mph, no matter how i pressed the gas pedal. i had to drive with my emergency blinkers and take the access road home. i t was night, and i did't want to be hit or rear ended. i feel so disgusted, and angry, because i just purchased it this past summer on july 7, 2007.it has only approx 6,000 miles . this isn't normal. i have been reading about the deaths on the jeep commanders, where the car engine and all its lights will suddenly turn off, while driving at interstate speeds. i don't want my car anymore,i don't want to be a statistic. the car seemed normal the following morning. i am driving to and from work on the access roads. the problem with the local dealer here is that if the problem is not happening right before their eyes, they will write a computer print out that states nothing wrong found, and send you away. i spoke to the general mgr. jack dunn, and explained the situation he told me i had probably pumped some dirty gasoline in the engine, because he knew of the same type of problem that happened to me with other cars. he also told me that i should never let the gasoline tank go lower than half-full. i plan to take it in to the dealer this friday. *tr

On approximately 6 occasions while driving my 2007 jeep commander, the vehicle has unexpectedly just shut off completely, steering wheel locks so you can't steer and it is very scary. especially since i have a 4 year old daughter who was riding with me on one occasion. i am now reading online of many people with this car who have the same experience. the dealer told me they reprogrammed the computer, but i am terrified to drive my new car. dealer also indicated they are not getting a lot of cooperation from the manufacturer on this one (as internet entries from others indicate as well). this is extremely dangerous. it also happened to me while i was driving on i-75 at about 70 mph. again, the whole car shuts off and you can't steer. something needs to be done immediately before someone is killed. *tr

While driving our practically new family 2007 jeep commander the engine stalled, at highway speed (70 mph +). i pulled to the shoulder; and re-started the jeep. i drove about 40 miles, and w/o warning the jeep stalled again. it also stalled a few days later, as i drove at city speed (30 mph). every thing appeared to be normal during these occurrences -- no warning lights or beeps. when my husband and i returned from the trip, we took the jeep to the dealer. they kept the jeep 6 days. the service department rep. said the engineers were unable to duplicate the problem, that every thing checked out okay. the rep did say that chrysler is aware of the problem but do not have a fix, however he was advised to release the jeep to us. we objected to taking the jeep and the dealer worked out an acceptable deal on another model. we bought the jeep new, 3 months before the incident. *jb

My husband and i had just bought our first new vehicle a 2007 jeep commander. it only had 65 mi. or so on it when we bought it. i absolutely loved it. then all of a sudden when i was pulling into a parking spot with my 20 month old little girl my car stalled. i almost hit a lincoln navigator! i went to the car dealership and they said they couldn't find a problem. that was at 1400 miles! then at 3700 mi. i was idling at a red light and my car starting shaking really bad! then i accidentally put my car in 4th gear and then it wouldn't go back into drive. it has been an awful experience owning this commander! the car dealership also told me the seats were stain resistant and they are not by any means i have taken my car up close to 15 times to have apple juice taken out of my stain proof cloth seats. i would not recommend this car to anyone!!!!!*jb

We purchased a 2007 jeep commander on feb.10. it has 2,000 miles on it. last week, the engine threw a rod through the side of the engine requiring a new engine to be installed. it was the result of road rainwater being taken into the engine through the air intake. i am having to file a claim with my insurance company to replace the engine. the water on ther road was minimal. i continue to see jeep advertisements on television showing the jeep commander driving thru water... the consumer needs to be aware that the vehicle cannot be driven thru water...

The 2006 jeep commander stalled 3 times in the 10 months of ownership. 2 out of the 3 stallings were on a heavy traffic interstate in atlanta, ga. events leading up to failure included driving approximately 65 miles an hour, a/c powered on failure, and its consequences resulted in engines turning off completely, and requiring a full restart. cars going the same speed as myself 65 mph)were swerving to miss me. to correct the failure jeep gave engine a software upgrade, and stated that should fix the problem. the service manager stated that he would not guarantee the service performed. it was only my life at stake, right?? i filed a formal legal complaint to chrysler to get out of my lease.*ak

When i bought my 2007 jeep commander 2 years ago, a problem occurred 2 months after buying the car, where it would slow down when i was driving at a fast speed. this only occurred once, so i let it slide; however, this recently started becoming a frequent problem. there are even multiple times when the engine just completely shuts off in the middle of the highway. this is very dangerous for me and my kids' safety. there was even a time when a car almost crashed into me because the stop was so sudden. the problem ranges from my car just slowing down automatically to completely shutting off. the engine also starts shaking which ends up shaking my entire car. i do not understand why this is happening, but i do know that it is not safe. i took my car to the dealership i purchased the car from 1 year ago, but they only told me that i should not worry. i then recently returned to the dealership again when i noticed the problem was becoming gradually worse, and they wanted to charge me 1000 dollars for damages that they were not even sure about. i did not find this to be just because i was not going to pay that amount of money for something that is not my fault. i researched online that the feds are actually involved with engine stall problems for jeep commanders because more than 135,000 people have the same complaint as i do. this is very dangerous and something needs to be done. so far, i have not received any significant help. *tr
