Defect SummaryOn certain sport utility vehicles, front brake calipers in a certain lot may have been manufactured from gray iron instead of ductile iron as designed and could fracture without warning.
Consequence SummaryThis would increase the vehicle's stopping distance and could cause a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the front brake calipers to see if they fall into this lot and, if so, will replace them free of charge. the recall began on october 22, 2007. owners may contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

 Was driving to work going about 60 mph and motor just shuts off. had to pull off to the side of the road and turn off the key and tried to restart engine. it didn't start on the first try had to turn key off and tried again it started. it did the same thing when i was going home that morning had to do the same thing as above to get it started again. this is very dangerous i didn't have power steering or brakes luckily i wasn't on the freeway. *tr

 My wife was driving to church with my daughter and the vehicle stalled without warning for the 7th or 8th time since we bought the vehicle. there was heavy traffic at 6pm and it scared her and my 9 yr old daughter to tears. this vehicle is a real danger to my family and the lives of others. it does not start at this point. *tr

 Slowing down at a traffic light and the vehicle stalled. again coming close to causing a major accident because of so much traffic., the vehicle would not start again for about 30 minutes cause grid lock and chaos. all i could here was a clicking sound when trying to start it. this happened multiple times after that and the last time i ended up having to steer into a steep ditch to avoid rear ending an 18 wheeler. i had my kids with me at the time. i contacted the dealer and got no help. *tr

 Tl-the contact owns a 2007 jeep commander. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph when the abs, esp, and the slippery when wet lights illuminated on the instrumental panel. she then tried to move forward from decelerating when the left rear wheel suddenly locked up and would make a grinding noise. the vehicle was towed to a dealer who has not contacted her back with a diagnosis. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 53,800. tb

 The brake system would lock up at high speeds, drivable and you feel the friction and it's like a tugging effect until you brake and then it would be completely fine. this first happened back in june of 2007. i brought the car in to have the dealer look at the problem as soon as it happened. they said everything was fine and they couldn't find anything wrong, nothing showed up on their tests. this brake problem happened occasionally through the year with no warning light appearing on the panel and it was brought to the dealers attention and always the same result, nothing they can find in their tests. but lately this brake problem was happening more frequently, more random and progressive and again was brought to the dealers attention, 3 different dealers in fact. and still nothing they can find. *tr

 Tl* the contact owns a 2007 jeep commander. the contact stated that while driving 72 mph, the rear brakes seized. the vehicle was maneuvered to the shoulder and a burning odor was coming from the brakes. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they were unable to diagnose the failure. the contact also stated that the vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer on numerous occasions in the past for the same problem and they could not diagnose a failure. the brake pads and rotors were replaced on various occasions but the failure continued. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number: 06v493000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock:control unit/module). the failure mileage was 85,560.

 2007 jeep commander. consumer states that the vehicle made a loud noise and all warning lights indicated the shift indicator. mechanic replaced the esim. consumer states the problem has returned. *kb the consumer stated on october 23, 2010 as he was entering a parking lot at a very low speed, preparing to stop, he was unable to stop and jumped the curb and a fence. *jb

 Tl*the contact owns a 2007 jeep commander. while driving 55 mph, the brake pedal extended to the floor. the contact smelled a burning odor coming from the rear brakes. the vehicle still managed to stop, even though the pedal dropped. there was no fuel leakage. the dealer stated that the brakes were locking, but was unable to determine the cause of the failure. the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 06v493000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock:control unit/module). the vehicle reaches 11 miles per gallon. the failure mileage was 5 and current mileage was 4,600.
