| The agency, particularly in recent months, has been informed of incidents involving allegations of personal injury and death claimed to have been caused by safety defects and failures to conform to minimum federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvss) on rental car vehicles for which a safety recall to remedy the safety defect or noncompliance had allegedly not been performed prior to the rental car company's lease of the vehicle.nhtsa understands that there is presently a petition before the federal trade commission (ftc) seeking to prohibit at least one rental car company from renting vehicles on which safety recall campaign remedies remain outstanding.the purpose of this audit query (aq) is to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on the above-listed safety recall campaigns.these campaigns were chosen due to their inclusion of vehicles used in the rental market.this information is expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets, in general or individually, perform necessary recall-related repairs or other remedies on the vehicles owned and then leased for use on the roadways.this aq is opened. | ||||||

| Just purchased used 2007 commander sport v6 at 58458 miles... drove it on vacation from detroit to wilmington, nc approx. 900 miles. trip went without incident until we drove down to see the ocean turned off the car, walked along the beach for about a half an hour, came back to the car, turned the ignition and absolutely nothing. however, all the electrical components seem to be functioning except the starter. at the dealer now and waiting to see what they tell me. i spent 25 plus years working in dealerships, mostly chrysler, not as a mechanic but i had my fair share of exposure to the service department. signed, stranded in nc | |||

| Purchased used in spring 2008 with approx. 30k miles, in spring of 2010 had several weeks of issues ranging from vehicle cutting off randomly, vehicle jumping while at stop lights, hesitating to go into 2nd and 3rd gear and then the 'service park assist' light would illuminate along with the gear indicator lights being all highlighted. obviously the dealer could not reproduce this but replaced the 'shifter mechanisim / shift lever housing, automatic transmission console shifter' and now in january of 2013 at 83369 miles, while driving home from lunch we could not get the vehicle to come out of first and the gear indicator lights were all highlighted. and for about 2 or more months have had the same issues as before with the vehicle cutting off, acceleration issues, jumping while in drive at a stop light. waiting for the dealership to call back because its a jeep and you cant have newer jeeps repaired by anyone other than a dealership. complete racket. not to mention that you can't even check the transmission fluid, that has to be done by a dealership also. will not buy jeep again! ever!!!!! | |||

| I purchased my used jeep commander and shortly after it stalled on me while i was driving. i took turned the key and got it to turn on again, luckily there were no cars behind me. another time i was driving on the highway and the same thing happened, again i was lucky the traffic was backed up and not moving too fast. before my warranty ran out i took it in and the dealership said there was nothing coming up on their tests that was of concern. the next month my warranty expired and i was stranded at a store. my jeep would not turn on claiming transmission over temp. it was not the battery. i left it over night and went back the next day and it started right up. the dealership could not find anything wrong with my jeep and suggested a transmission computer update. about a month later i was back at the shop with the tranmission over temp issue, but the jeep behaved at the dealership. i picked it up and about 2 months later i was back at the shop, having to tow in my car. the car again turned on, so the dealership replaced the starter relay on a guess (i was not charged). again 2 months later my car is back in the shop for not turning on, again saying that there is a transmission over temp issue. also while i am sitting at a red light, i find my jeep shaking like crazy. it seems like it wants to turn off, but it doesn't (or maybe the light changes just in time). i have done regular maintenance on my jeep. the dealership has run their diagnostic tests on the jeep and absolutely nothing has come up. all in all, i drive in fear that my car will stall again on the highway, putting both my son's and my life in danger, or that we will be stranded in the middle of nowhere. | |||

| Jeep commander stalls randomly while driving. this is the 5th time in less than a week. when the vechicle stalls, the steeriing locks up and the car has to be put into park in order to restart it, and is difficult to restart when this happens. this is a major safety issue because the car is moving when it stalls. | |||

| Driving home from the doctors office my jeep went dead on me. i had no.ideal what was wrong with it. it started back up and it has happen to me several mire times since. i travel with my kids and i'm afraid it is going to get us killed. please let me know of any recalls. | |||

| Vehicle appeared to hesitate and eventually stalled loosing power. all instrumentation lights came on during this event. driver was able to coast to the side of the highway; place the car in park/neutral; and restart the engine. the same event has happened at least 4 other times since the first at varying speed (i.e. 35 to 65 mph) and there were no warning lights making this a very dangerous and unpredictable event. i took the vechicle to an authorized dealer and he stated that it could be the power control module; but was unsure. i'm very concerned with the safety of my family. the symptom of this problem (engine stall) is unpredictable and is a recipe for a serious and life threatening accident. i've reviewed hundreds of complaints reporting similar conditions. there needs to be a global recall on all 2007 jeep commanders reporting this problem to have this issues repaired before there is a loss of life resulting from this event. nhtsb please respond to this complaint and compel chrysler to issue a recall before it is too late and life threathening injury occurs. | |||

| I own a 2007 jeep commander it is always overheating.it has also stalled out an the lighting system started malfunctioning by cutting completely off. also it will say in the digital dash screen that the transmission is overheating when i start the vehicle. i have to cut the truck off immediately an when i crank it back up it is fine. | |||

| Driving at 70 mph on tollway and vehicle stalled and steering wheel column locked up. this happened two days ago and is occuring more often. it is extremely dangerous because the steering wheel column locks as you are driving. it has happend four more times. i now do not want to drive the vehicle because i fear for the safety of myself and my daughter. | |||

| The vehicle was purchased new october 2007, also the extended warranty 5year 60,000 was purchased at the same time. the major problems began with the transmission electronic system, the removed and replaced something inside. meanwhile the vehicle has been serviced and maintained by grava chrysler jeep since new the first time we complained and had it serviced was january 2011 and the last report was february 20,2012 and they still don't know what to fix..last year while driving home on interstate 93 speed approx 55 the vehicle lost power and we almost were struck by another vehicle, we had to come to a complete stop, place the vehicle in park to restart.would not restart in neutral. the tech and service manager said it should have,well it didn't. they replaced the ignition switch, it happened again,they replaced some module, it happened again, they changed the fuel pump, it happened again for the sixth (6) time.they kept it for 10 days and were not able to find the problem, no code ,no problem that was their answer.by the way they put over 500 miles on the vehicle this time. | |||

| Engine stalling or not starting. engine stalled while making a turn. car started immediately after but engine and oil lights remained on. service deparrtment replaced censors but that did not correct the problem. sporadically stalls at take off, when slowing down to turn/stop, when cruise control is disengaged at highway speeds. on highway, hit brake to disengage cc and switch lanes, car stalled, turned the key without putting it in park or stopping and engine kicked back in. car wouldn't start on one occasion and service department replaced alternator but problem still persists. service department replaced ignition switch but problem persists with car not starting. stuck at highway rest stop for 2 hours until car re-started. service department stated that computer needed to be replaced, then said that they weren't getting that code the next time we had problems. have replaced various parts but problem still persists. service department states that they have not been able to re-create the problem while driving. | |||

| Over the past few weeks while driving the vehicle will flash a warning saying service park assist system. when this happens the gear display on the dash prnd will all 4 get circled and flash and then as you are accelerating you can feel the vehicle lose speed. you can no longer accelerate the vehicle and have to coast off the road. once you stop and shift to park then back to drive it will reset and then allow you to accelerate. i was going 65 on the freeway when this happened last and this is a major safety issue. for about the past 30,000-40,000 k miles we have had issues with it shifting properly and every time we took it to the dealer they can never re create the issue. now we are receiving this warning and it actually stops accelerating on its own. it is happening more and more. we took it to the dealer since this warning now came on and they said they have never heard of it, they couldn't re create it, that it has nothing to do with the shifting and to turn off our park assist system so it doesn't happen. we are attempting a different dealer today but first thing they said is they never hear of this either. so comforting! | |||

| The vehicle stalled while being driven the first time the same month it was purchased. took it to the dealer i bought it from who said they couldn't find a code and sent it back to me. it has stalled numerous other times in the 5 months my wife and i have been driving it including on interstate highways, mountain roads and in our neighborhood. just suddenly stops running. have to bring the vehicle to a stop. turn key to off position and restart. no problems re-starting. have taken it back to the dealer two more times with the same result (no code; no work; sent home). called chrysler who also said they couldn't help. | |||

| I have a 2007 jeep commander and it is less than four years old and i have had the starter replaced 4 times. jeep can't explain why they can't fully fix the problem and they refuse to acknowledge that this is an issue with the commanders at large and not my specific vehicle. in addition to having had the starter replaced 4 times, i have also had the electronic shifting module replaced as well and the crankshaft. my commander has less than 40,000 miles on it and has been well maintained since i purchased it brand new. jeep has failed to address my concerns and refuses to accept responsibility for selling me a vehicle. jeep suggested i purchase a new vehicle and i find this preposterous due to the fact that the car is less than four years old. the commander is clearly defective and jeep needs to take responsibility for it. instead, jeep refuses to accept responsibility and they decided to rectify the problem by halting production. | |||

| At random times, when trying to start the jeep it wont start and say transmission over temp. at first it would take a couple days before it would start again. i used it for a few more days and it did the same thing. a couple hours later it started back up. after a few more times of happening ive noticed you can put it in neutral and back in park and sometimes it restarts. the dealership has looked at it and said they had another one with the same problem but no fix for it. | |||

| While traveling in drive the vehicle would not accelerate or decelerate. on the dash board all the gear 123d had lit up squares around them. when i pressed the accelerator to the floor nothing happened. this can cause a crash and possibly kill somebody including my family. i ended up having to pull to the shoulder of the road. turn the vehicle off and restart it. when i did this everything worked normally. i have heard of problems like this before. i bought this vehicle used from a volkswagon dealer who told me the powertrain warranty was transferable. it is not. the vehicle only has 44000 miles on it and i don't understand why it is so unsafe. please help.. no work has been done on this vehicle due to lack of funds, a warranty and every time i call a jeep dealer and ask them what it is i get a different answer and i don't believe that they know what they are doing. | |||

| Vehicle begins to stall, and has no acceleration, check engine light comes on, and all gears are highlighted on the dash. it has become more frequent, and now is happening at highway speeds, where before it happened from a stopped position attempting to accelerate. on 01/22/11 while traveling approximately 60mph on a freeway, the gears selections where all highlighted, and the car began to bog, and had no acceleration. this was a cause for concern being on a major congested highway in chicago, with my family in the vehicle. this stalling problem has happened approximately 20-30 times since it first started happening. | |||
