On may 5, 2008, chrysler llc (chrysler) submitted a defect information report to nhtsa concerning an engine calibration issue that could result in engine stall in approximately 24,461 model year (my) 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with the 4.7l v-8 engine and built from february 25, 2005 through january 11, 2006.according to chrysler, the powertrain control module (pcm) was programmed with software that may allow the engine to stall during certain operating conditions.chrysler dealers will reprogram the pcm software in the recalled vehicles. information provided by chrysler during pe07-009 and ea07-007 indicated that a revised engine calibration was implemented in production effective january 12, 2006 for the my 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 4.7l v-8 engines.odi's analysis ofconsumer complaints, field reports and other data related to field experience with engine stalling in my 2006 through 2007 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 3.7l, 4.7l and 5.7l engines identified an elevated rate of stalling incidents in the my 2006 vehicles equipped with 4.7l engines that were manufactured before the calibration change.odi interviewed over 70 consumers who reported stalling incidents in early production my 2006 4.7l vehicles.information gathered from those interviews indicated that the stalling incidents were occurring at various speeds, often occurred during turns and typically occurred more than once.the interviews did not identify any concerns with restartability. although the early my 2006 production vehicles with 4.7l engines make up only about 15 percent of all my 2006 through 2007 jeep commanders built by chrysler, they were responsible for 465 of the 854 reported stalling incidents (54%), 6 of the 12 crash incidents (50%) and the only injury claim.the stalling rate for the recalled vehicles is 1.90 percent, almost 7 times greater than the rate in the remaining population (0.28 percent).chrysler's recall covers the vehicles with the elevated stalling rate.the remaining vehicles have relatively low rates of stalling and do not exhibit any signs of aggravating factors such as problems with restart. odi also analyzed complaints alleging concerns with loss of lighting coincident to stalling incidents.this analysis identified seven stalling incidents where loss of exterior lighting was alleged.no specific cause was identified in these incidents and there was no discernible pattern regarding engine, vehicle production options, build range or failure trend. this investigation is closed with chrysler's recall.
PE07009CHRYSLER GROUP LLC02/12/200704/27/2007ENGINE STALL
Odi has received 76 vehicle owner complaints alleging incidents of engine stall while driving in model year (my) 2006 through 2007 jeep commander vehicles (subject vehicles).some of the complaints reported one or more incidents of engine stall with a simultaneous loss of some or all lighting systems, including headlamps.two engine stalls resulted in a vehicle crash.in its response to a request for information, daimlerchrysler corporation (dcc) indicated that it has not determined the cause of engine stalling in the subject vehicles and that it hasformed a multi-disciplinary task force to investigate the issue. this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea07-007) to further assess the frequency, scope and potential safety consequences of the alleged defect.

I explained the previous evening i noticed steering did not seem right and i had to push on gas more to get the car to have power. i mentioned this to my husband in case it was time to check spark plugs and get a tune up. the next morning i went through a car wash and started a 30 mile commute. while driving 65-70 mph on a highway the vehicle lights and all power shut down without warning. the only thing working was the radio. no brakes, steering was different. thankfully this time was able to pull to a shoulder and coast to an offramp. i coasted to a stop, put in park then tried to start. the vehicle started again and i drove straight to the dealership 4 miles away. i explained to the dealer and also called the maker of the vehicles recall dept. they opened a case. at this point no one has any idea what happened and the issue is intermittent. they cannot replicate and i have not had my car for 6 days. i have researched that i am not the only one this has happened to and most people become a middle man between the dealer, the warranty company, and no resolution is ever made. many became frustrated and sold and cut their losses. they continued to drive the vehicle and it continued to happen. i am not clear on the statistics but i read one blog that stated this incident has caused 2 accidents. i have survived cancer and i have 3 chilldren. i cannot consiously drive the vehicle again. i am thankful this did not happen driving uphill on a dark mountainside. we had planned a trip to la that had to be cancelled due to lack of safety. i am starting an uphill battle or i will be forced to sale. if so many people have had this issue since 2006 why hasn't there been a resolution. people get the computer fixed only for it to happen again which tells me the computer itself is faulty. i am not sure what to do and i am desperate to resolve the situation. it will put us in danger. *tr

I drive a 2006 jeep commander limited v8 and it has a tendency to stall for no reason. it has happened 4 times in the last month and i have read that many others are having this same issue with their commanders of the same year model. fortunately i have not been involved in an accident due to the stalling, however, it does it at all speeds and when it happens i lose all power. *tr

I leased my 2006 jeep commander 4x2 4.7 v8 in 2006. the vehicle began having problems the same day i brought it home. the vehicle stalls frequently and the electric system disables. the stalling occurs without warning. the stalling also occurs at various speeds and while the vehicle is not moving. when the engine shuts off, the vehicle is completely disabled. the brakes wont work and i lose total control over the vehicle. i was involved in an accident in 2007 due to this issue, jeep/chrysler has denied the repair even though i received a recall letter. the odometer is also incorrect, it changes numbers frequently. chrysler informed me that the vehicle is safe to drive and denied any further repairs concerning the recall. the vehicle is still the same, it stalls very often. please help me. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander 4x2. while driving 30-60 mph, the vehicle stalled and lost power without warning. the failure occurred in traffic once and the contact believes this is a safety issue because a crash could have occurred. he took the vehicle to the dealer prior to receiving a recall notice, but they could not duplicate the failure. the recall number was unknown. the current mileage was 23,305 and failure mileage was 19,000.

We own a 2006 jeep commander that has been a problem from the first month we owned it. the first incident occurred when my wife and 3 children were driving on the highway and the vehicle shut off at 65 mph. the vehicle has consistently experienced the same challenge at low and high speeds. in addition, we have experienced similar issues as other owners such as; transmission noises and slippage, electrical system failures, excessive break noise, break wear, excessive cracking in windshield, seatbelt failure, window leaks, stereo replacement and more! in the last 9 months this vehicle has been to the dealer for repair more than 6 times for similar issues. the dealer, as with other customers has claimed they can't replicate the problem... and sent us on our way. i have now embarked upon having the vehicle bought back by the manufacturer and will also begin a formal legal case to ensure other owners receive retribution. this car is dangerous and the manufacturer is aware of these problems, you are not crazy and the dealers are covering it up! *tr

Our 2006 jeep commander v8 4.7l has stalled while driving at least 5 times. 3 times on the highway and twice on slow turns. initially the problem seemed related to the ignition switch. just a slight brush against the key was enough to kill the engine and some of the electrical systems (specifically power assist). while out of town during this past christmas the third highway failure and first slow turn failure occurred. the out of town dealer replaced the ignition switch. another slow turn failure occurred on march 20, 2008, where the disabled power assist had my wife veering into oncoming traffic. we had the dealer pick up the car at our home. the service manager stated that this was the fifth commander he had personally seen with this issue. the current fix was to upgrade the firmware of the engine controller unit. i asked for and received the technical service bulletin for this repair (case number k23158981, star on line number: 18190602 0.4). the bulletin did not mention the root cause for this issue and the recommendation only states that the engine controller should be flashed. i asked for further technical details in hopes of finding some confidence that this issue has truly been diagnosed and fixed, but was told that no more information was available. the service manager was fairly confident that the issue would be resolved with this fix, but he could not be certain. frankly, that's just not good enough with this kind of safety concern. we are at 39k miles and out of our warranty. dealing with dc's corporate office has been a nightmare and have refused to provide any real assistance. we are looking to get out of this car as we no longer have confidence in it's safety. the local dealership has been nice enough, but beyond trying to give us the best deal possible on a '08 commander they haven't been able to really assist us in getting out of this vehicle. *tr

'06 jeep commander 4x2 - (1) stalls intermittently during turns which are both from moving and stopped positions. many have occurred during a u-turn from a stopped position - unable to duplicate, in shop again (2) has a rough idle, which at times is more severe than others, but has never died - has just shaken severely a few times. there is no set pattern. it occurs during cold and hot weather, with electrical devices on or off, in park/neutral/drive, if the engine has warmed up or is still cold (3) the original windshield - continuous rock chips, cracks, etc - replaced @ 11,000k with a non-jeep brand glass and to date the new windshield has only 1 star chip. have heard the design of the windshield is reason for the windshield breaking easily, but the glass is not sufficient/durable (4) transmission fluid leaking from o-rings - replaced (5) rear spring seats squeaking - insulators replaced (6) excessive wind noise from front passenger side - at 22,500k dealership said only normal wind buff, at 24,000k dealership said unsure where it's coming from but will reseal front windshield (7) front driver window made grinding noise - motor replaced (8) short in audio/speaker system - radio assembly replaced (9) front driver power lock motor whining during autolock in cold weather (10) back up sensor doesn't sound until 1' before object (11) alert to check reverse sensor and wouldn't start- towed, battery replaced (12) middle seats hard to fold up (13) front windows go down instead of up(14)vehicle hesitates when put in drive/ reverse (15) steering whines. *tr

Engine stalled on several different occasions at different speeds. gives no warning. has happened about 10 times over the past year. brought it to the dealership in october 2006, computer was reset, but no problem found. happened several times after that, but didn't bother bringing in due to dealership finding nothing wrong. happened again last week, had another appointment at dealership in a few days. very scary issue. not only am i worried about myself, but my 3 and 1 year old in the back seat was extremely scary. hope this problem was resolved soon before someone was killed. if the dealerships could not find anything wrong with the jeep. i felt the whole thing needed to be recalled. to big of a liability, don't you think???!!!!!!*ak

He first instance was when had stopped at my house, gone in and grabbed some paperwork, got back in the suv and then when putting the suv into reverse it just turned off. i went back to the dealership, where i was actually purchasing the vehicle. on my way back to the dealership i was traveling about 35 mph on a straight road when the suv shut off. there was no power steering or brakes, but i noticed the stereo seemed to be on , just the display. i put the car in neutral while going about 15 mph and started it, and then put it back in gear. i went to the dealer again, i was on my way to finalize the purchase, and related this to them. they stated they weren't sure why it happened but would look into it. i was dropping it off on 5/22/07. *ak

Tl*- the contact stated that the 2006 jeep commander 4x 2 had stalling problems for almost a year . while driving usually under 45 mph the vehicle stalled, and when trying to come to a stop it stalled. the contact took the vehicle to the dealership on 4 occasions and they could not duplicate the problem. the contact stated that they have changed the vacuum hose and flashed one of the computers in the system, they've replaced the ignition switch, and a single fuel injector. the contact was still having the same problem, stalling. the contact spoke to the manufacturer, filed a complaint ,and was given case# 16017241. the contact stated that this was a major safety problem, and would like nhtsa to be aware of this problem. the service manager and the general manager of the dealership informed the contact that the manufacturer was aware of this problem, that the vehicle stalled when the engine was below 650 rpms. although they were aware of this problem, but they were not sure how to resolve this problem. *ak

I was driving my new 2006 jeep commander limited home from a children's party at approximately 8:30 pm on christmas eve and was traveling northbound on the taconic state parkway at 54 mph with the cruise control activated. the vehicle cut out completely(stall), it lost all electrical power, the headlights and all interior lighting went out, the engine shut off. fortunately i was traveling at the time on a straight section of road and there were no other cars on the road. i went down and switched the ignition key to the off position and immediately back to the on position and the vehicle restarted and all the lights came back on. my wife was sitting in the second row of seats with our 10 month old baby and she witnessed everything and confirms what i experienced. a week ago the vehicle did the same thing , but this time i was stationary in a local shopping mall parking lot, engine cut out and the lights went off, and the vehicle immediately restarted when i turned the key. the vehicle shut off again today with my wife driving it, she had stopped and left the engine running to retrieve something from the floor, and when she went to pull away the vehicle was shutdown the dealership has ordered a new front power train module for this vehicle, and that will be fitted tomorrow morning at 10:30 am .this now represents the third separate chrysler vehicle and sixth power train computer. chrysler did a buy back' from me in decemeber 2005 on my 2005 durango, which after 6 months of ownership, from new had cut out approximately 7 times . my previous dodge vehicle was a 2003, ram pickup with the 5.7 liter which exhibited all the same problems , but almost caused me to have a very serious accident when it shutoff pulling on o a local parkway. fortunately, i pulled the shifter into neutral and steering on to the shoulder, but we were almost hit by another car that was traveling up the parkway.*ak

My 2006 jeep commander's ignition key is so sensitive to touch that if it is bumped while driving, the key turns the engine off causing the vehicle to shut down and making steering almost impossible. i have almost crashed coming of a highway and it has happened multiple times. i am 6' tall and when i move my foot off the gas the knee hits the key ever so slightly and the key switches off. *jb

I was driving my new 2006 jeep commander, automatic transmission 6 cyl engine. i am 6'4.25 tall and weigh 205 lbs. i have proportionately sized limbs and appendages. i was driving at about 35 mph on a road near my house and all of the sudden the car turned off. the key was brushed by my knee and the vehicle abruptly quit. there is no way for me to fit in the seat and put the seat far enough back that there is no risk of the key turning off while still letting my arms reach the wheel. the key protrudes directly perpendicularly out of the dash, intercepting my knee dead on from the front. i had driven the car for over 100 miles before this ever happened. then it happened again this morning. come to think of it, the new jeep grand cherokee that my friend has, this has happened too. the placement of the ignition switch, combined with its angle on the dashboard and the slightly large size of the key fob make this a big risk for taller drivers like myself. the key only barely has to be grazed (i could not feel it happening) and the vehicle shuts off (while in motion!) and has to be put into park in order to be restarted. i think that eventually someone will have an accident keeping control of their car when it unitentionally shuts off on them, now it has happened to me 3 times within about 200 miles, and like i said, there is no physically possible way for me to adjust the seat so that my arms reach the wheel and me knee does not reach the key. this seems dangerous and i wanted to bring it to your attention immediately so that chrysler can modify the design of either the key fob or the ignition switch in order to prevent people from causing damage to themselves or their vehicle. thanks, ryan weatherby. *nm
