On may 5, 2008, chrysler llc (chrysler) submitted a defect information report to nhtsa concerning an engine calibration issue that could result in engine stall in approximately 24,461 model year (my) 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with the 4.7l v-8 engine and built from february 25, 2005 through january 11, 2006.according to chrysler, the powertrain control module (pcm) was programmed with software that may allow the engine to stall during certain operating conditions.chrysler dealers will reprogram the pcm software in the recalled vehicles. information provided by chrysler during pe07-009 and ea07-007 indicated that a revised engine calibration was implemented in production effective january 12, 2006 for the my 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 4.7l v-8 engines.odi's analysis ofconsumer complaints, field reports and other data related to field experience with engine stalling in my 2006 through 2007 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 3.7l, 4.7l and 5.7l engines identified an elevated rate of stalling incidents in the my 2006 vehicles equipped with 4.7l engines that were manufactured before the calibration change.odi interviewed over 70 consumers who reported stalling incidents in early production my 2006 4.7l vehicles.information gathered from those interviews indicated that the stalling incidents were occurring at various speeds, often occurred during turns and typically occurred more than once.the interviews did not identify any concerns with restartability. although the early my 2006 production vehicles with 4.7l engines make up only about 15 percent of all my 2006 through 2007 jeep commanders built by chrysler, they were responsible for 465 of the 854 reported stalling incidents (54%), 6 of the 12 crash incidents (50%) and the only injury claim.the stalling rate for the recalled vehicles is 1.90 percent, almost 7 times greater than the rate in the remaining population (0.28 percent).chrysler's recall covers the vehicles with the elevated stalling rate.the remaining vehicles have relatively low rates of stalling and do not exhibit any signs of aggravating factors such as problems with restart. odi also analyzed complaints alleging concerns with loss of lighting coincident to stalling incidents.this analysis identified seven stalling incidents where loss of exterior lighting was alleged.no specific cause was identified in these incidents and there was no discernible pattern regarding engine, vehicle production options, build range or failure trend. this investigation is closed with chrysler's recall.

Was driving to work and was accelerating to about 55mph, when my 2006 jeep commander stopped accelerating and had apparently jumped into neutral. the check engine light also came on at that time. i had to pull over put the vehicle in park and then back into drive, and then it was fine. this exact same thing has occurred about 3-4 times. always with the check engine light going off soon after. *tr

During sept. '06, i informed chrysler and a chrysler dealership of a safety defect--stalling in traffic--with my 2006 jeep commander limited . from sept. '06 to dec. '07, i made several phone calls and wrote several letters to chrysler (via its registered agent) concerning this problem. all of my letters were ignored. from sept. '06 to dec. '07, chrysler required me to take the vehicle to the dealership concerning the stalling problem, even though chrysler's employees knew a task force had been formed to deal with the problem. in late dec. '07, i discovered an internet article entitled jeep stalling problem and faxed the article to chrysler. according to the information contained in this article, many customers have experienced the same problem with the 2006 jeep commander limited, and even chrysler has not been able to determine the cause. as a result of gaining access to this article, i was able to challenge chrysler's dishonest assertion that my problem was unique and that no other consumer had complained of this problem. therefore, in jan. '08, a chrysler manager phoned me indicating that chrysler had agreed to buy back my vehicle because of the stalling problem and a resulting automobile accident (sept. '07)(note:this accident occurred one year after chrysler was notified of the safety issue). i was told a representative of impartial services group (isg) would give me a call concerning details of the buy back. i received a call from isg; however, it is clear that this company works on behalf of chrysler. as a result, i am still driving an unsafe vehicle and have almost been involved in three accidents within the past two weeks. chrysler has ignored my request for a rental car until a buy back agreement is reached. i recently notified chrysler's investors--cerberus and daimler--of my experience. *tr

My 2006 jeep commander stalls at highway speeds and has to be restarted in motion. it also stalls in the middle of intersections and while sitting at a stop light. i have been stranded in the middle of an intersection at least 4 times and it has happened at 70mph at least twice. i am afraid to drive this vehicle. the dealer has done all they can to try to fix it but can never recreate the problem. it stopped for about 6-8 months but yesterday they had to replace my battery and it started all over again. it has done it 3 time in the last 24hrs with my childern in the car. i have seen numerous posts regarding the same problem and can't believe a recall has not been issued. i guess someone has to be injured or worse. *tr

Vehicle has stalled twice during operation nearly causing severe accidents. once while exciting off ramp of freeway at around 40 mph and once while accelerating from a stop. with no power steering or brakes either situation could have been deadly, we were just lucky that the drivers around us were alert and we were able to restart the vehicle and get away safely. the second occurrence happened with my family in the car and frightened us all. the vehicle is currently in the shop, the dealer mentioned no known problems. i came home and did a quick web search and found several postings on various web sites stating the same problem. some one is going to be killed if they have not already as a result of this. where is the recall? *jb

While traveling over 70 mph on the highway, the vehicle stalled. i assumed it was due to it being lower than 1/4 full. i refueled with 87 octane to full, but the vehicle continued to stall at full stops and on the highway a total of 9 more times. the next day the vehicle stalled again so i refilled it with 89 octane. the vehicle stopped stalling after that. *tr

My new 2006 jeep commander now shuts the engine off at will while driving. i was exiting i-4 onto cr579 going just under 40 mph when the steering went out (so i thought) all gauges were lit i rolled off onto the side of the road once in neutral the truck restarted. i dropped it at courtesy chrysler 3/29 and was informed prior to inspection that the problem had been seen on the commanders and was apparently prevalent on the pacifica model however there was nothing they could do if no code came up so at this point i am expected to pick the truck up tell my wife to drive around my children as if things are a ok. spoke to the service manager who stated that he is aware of the problem and he would check to see if dc is working on anything to fix it and if not he will tell me(very comforting) the dealership is very very helpful and professional but apparently just don't know what to do. *nm

2006 jeep commander engine dies suddenly. two different dealers could find nothing wrong. problems occurred at least 14 times and 7 times in the last 90 days. first occurred at 2500 miles and dealer said nothing wrong. occurred at 8000, 9000, 12000, 15100, 15500, 17500, 18600, 18700, 19000 and 19406. at 17500 took to different dealer who replaced the battery after towing it in and kept car for 4 days to try and diagnose issue. on 12/8, we smelled gas and we could not restart it for 30 seconds. on 12/21 it died on a railroad crossing. my wife crosses 6 tracks a day and it has died one other time on the tracks, and one time while merging into 65 mph traffic. have spent 1 hour on phone with chrysler customer service so far because i told them we only drive it to work and we want a loaner or new vehicle immediately. am also proceeding with texan lemon law filing. this looks like nhtsa#ea07007. *tr

While driving my 2006 jeep commander in a very crowded parking lot, it completely stalled without warning!! the car behind me had to make a very sudden stop to avoid an accident. the power steering and brakes went out and i had to put the car in park and restart it. this same thing occurred when my husband was driving it approx. one month ago, but we wrongly attributed it to the car having only a quarter tank of gas in it at the time. i have 8 year old triplets that depend on this car daily and i will not put their safety at risk!! please help us scared commander owners to make chrysler do the right thing before someone is seriously injured or even killed. thank you. *jb
