DP06002CHRYSLER GROUP LLC07/13/200601/03/2007PETITION RE: UNINTENDED ACCELERATION
Odi received a petition requesting a defect investigation concerning unintended acceleration in the 2006 jeep commander stemming from a fatal incident that occurred in delaware in december 2005.after a careful review of the circumstances surrounding this incident, odi finds no evidence to indicate the influence of a manufacturing defect.likewise, no similar complaints concerning this model exist in the odi complaint database.accordingly, the petition is denied.odi reserves the right to revisit this issue in the future should circumstances warrant.

On may 5, 2008, chrysler llc (chrysler) submitted a defect information report to nhtsa concerning an engine calibration issue that could result in engine stall in approximately 24,461 model year (my) 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with the 4.7l v-8 engine and built from february 25, 2005 through january 11, 2006.according to chrysler, the powertrain control module (pcm) was programmed with software that may allow the engine to stall during certain operating conditions.chrysler dealers will reprogram the pcm software in the recalled vehicles. information provided by chrysler during pe07-009 and ea07-007 indicated that a revised engine calibration was implemented in production effective january 12, 2006 for the my 2006 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 4.7l v-8 engines.odi's analysis ofconsumer complaints, field reports and other data related to field experience with engine stalling in my 2006 through 2007 jeep commander vehicles equipped with 3.7l, 4.7l and 5.7l engines identified an elevated rate of stalling incidents in the my 2006 vehicles equipped with 4.7l engines that were manufactured before the calibration change.odi interviewed over 70 consumers who reported stalling incidents in early production my 2006 4.7l vehicles.information gathered from those interviews indicated that the stalling incidents were occurring at various speeds, often occurred during turns and typically occurred more than once.the interviews did not identify any concerns with restartability. although the early my 2006 production vehicles with 4.7l engines make up only about 15 percent of all my 2006 through 2007 jeep commanders built by chrysler, they were responsible for 465 of the 854 reported stalling incidents (54%), 6 of the 12 crash incidents (50%) and the only injury claim.the stalling rate for the recalled vehicles is 1.90 percent, almost 7 times greater than the rate in the remaining population (0.28 percent).chrysler's recall covers the vehicles with the elevated stalling rate.the remaining vehicles have relatively low rates of stalling and do not exhibit any signs of aggravating factors such as problems with restart. odi also analyzed complaints alleging concerns with loss of lighting coincident to stalling incidents.this analysis identified seven stalling incidents where loss of exterior lighting was alleged.no specific cause was identified in these incidents and there was no discernible pattern regarding engine, vehicle production options, build range or failure trend. this investigation is closed with chrysler's recall.
PE07009CHRYSLER GROUP LLC02/12/200704/27/2007ENGINE STALL
Odi has received 76 vehicle owner complaints alleging incidents of engine stall while driving in model year (my) 2006 through 2007 jeep commander vehicles (subject vehicles).some of the complaints reported one or more incidents of engine stall with a simultaneous loss of some or all lighting systems, including headlamps.two engine stalls resulted in a vehicle crash.in its response to a request for information, daimlerchrysler corporation (dcc) indicated that it has not determined the cause of engine stalling in the subject vehicles and that it hasformed a multi-disciplinary task force to investigate the issue. this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea07-007) to further assess the frequency, scope and potential safety consequences of the alleged defect.

Was driving to work and was accelerating to about 55mph, when my 2006 jeep commander stopped accelerating and had apparently jumped into neutral. the check engine light also came on at that time. i had to pull over put the vehicle in park and then back into drive, and then it was fine. this exact same thing has occurred about 3-4 times. always with the check engine light going off soon after. *tr

There are reports all over the internet about this same issue with jeep commanders. this needs to be reviewed for recall and is a safety issue. the check park assist warning started to flash intermittently while the vehicle was in operation. when this occurred, all gear indicators on the dash would light up at the same time. there was initially no other indication that anything was wrong with the car. eventually, the check engine light came on and the dealer diagnosed it as needing a new transmission control module. the same events occurred within 2 weeks of installing the new module. dealer replaced it again and said the part was faulty. the same events occurred again with the next month. dealer was unable to find a problem and reset the computer/wiped the error. it occurred again and progressed to the car loosing accelerating power while driving and/or shifting in to lower gears for no reason. new dealer this time, says that it is the shifting control module. review of the issue on-line shows a long history of this problem even though i am fortunate enough not to have it happen within a few years of ownership. this is a safety issue that can cause injury to passengers when the car shifts down at highway speed and/or accidents because the driver no longer has control of acceleration. *tr

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander 4x2. while driving approximately 20 mph, the contact applied the brake pedal twice before a response occurred and the vehicle began to reduce speed. the failure occurred spontaneously. in addition, the engine would stall without warning. the vehicle was currently being diagnosed by an authorized dealer. there was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 08v203000 (power train:automatic transmission:control module, tcm, pcm). the contact was uncertain whether the vin was included in the recall defect and planned to notify the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000. kmj

I was driving my 2006 jeep commander out a parking lot and it lost complete power. it started stalling and i took the vehicle to a chrysler dealership and they say i have to pay to have the pcm updated and that affected the electronic shift module. i did some research after speaking with them and it seems to be a problem on this type of vehicle and even a recall (#08v20300). *tr

I leased my 2006 jeep commander 4x2 4.7 v8 in 2006. the vehicle began having problems the same day i brought it home. the vehicle stalls frequently and the electric system disables. the stalling occurs without warning. the stalling also occurs at various speeds and while the vehicle is not moving. when the engine shuts off, the vehicle is completely disabled. the brakes wont work and i lose total control over the vehicle. i was involved in an accident in 2007 due to this issue, jeep/chrysler has denied the repair even though i received a recall letter. the odometer is also incorrect, it changes numbers frequently. chrysler informed me that the vehicle is safe to drive and denied any further repairs concerning the recall. the vehicle is still the same, it stalls very often. please help me. *tr

2006 jeep commander stalls at no particular time, rolls back on an incline after taking foot off brake pedal, vehicle will shut off at no particular time. jeep has recalls for these problems but the vin says none is available therefore dealer will not perform recall. recall is for the v8 model but the vehicle has the exact same transmission and has the same characteristics even though it is a v6 model. very unsafe to drive while having these problems. *tr

We own a 2006 jeep commander that has been a problem from the first month we owned it. the first incident occurred when my wife and 3 children were driving on the highway and the vehicle shut off at 65 mph. the vehicle has consistently experienced the same challenge at low and high speeds. in addition, we have experienced similar issues as other owners such as; transmission noises and slippage, electrical system failures, excessive break noise, break wear, excessive cracking in windshield, seatbelt failure, window leaks, stereo replacement and more! in the last 9 months this vehicle has been to the dealer for repair more than 6 times for similar issues. the dealer, as with other customers has claimed they can't replicate the problem... and sent us on our way. i have now embarked upon having the vehicle bought back by the manufacturer and will also begin a formal legal case to ensure other owners receive retribution. this car is dangerous and the manufacturer is aware of these problems, you are not crazy and the dealers are covering it up! *tr

'06 jeep commander 4x2 - (1) stalls intermittently during turns which are both from moving and stopped positions. many have occurred during a u-turn from a stopped position - unable to duplicate, in shop again (2) has a rough idle, which at times is more severe than others, but has never died - has just shaken severely a few times. there is no set pattern. it occurs during cold and hot weather, with electrical devices on or off, in park/neutral/drive, if the engine has warmed up or is still cold (3) the original windshield - continuous rock chips, cracks, etc - replaced @ 11,000k with a non-jeep brand glass and to date the new windshield has only 1 star chip. have heard the design of the windshield is reason for the windshield breaking easily, but the glass is not sufficient/durable (4) transmission fluid leaking from o-rings - replaced (5) rear spring seats squeaking - insulators replaced (6) excessive wind noise from front passenger side - at 22,500k dealership said only normal wind buff, at 24,000k dealership said unsure where it's coming from but will reseal front windshield (7) front driver window made grinding noise - motor replaced (8) short in audio/speaker system - radio assembly replaced (9) front driver power lock motor whining during autolock in cold weather (10) back up sensor doesn't sound until 1' before object (11) alert to check reverse sensor and wouldn't start- towed, battery replaced (12) middle seats hard to fold up (13) front windows go down instead of up(14)vehicle hesitates when put in drive/ reverse (15) steering whines. *tr

I purchased a jeep commander in december 2005. right off i started having electrical and water leaking problems with my jeep. the vehicle would mysteriously turn off while idling and would accelerate quickly for no reason. in march i took my vehicle in complaining about the defects. the biggest complaint at the time was when you open your door to get in you literally get a foot soaking!!!!!!!!! the dealership could not resolve any of the issues that i had. they even laughed when i asked them what to do about the door and said i better get used to it because jeep was not going to do anything about it. in june of 2006 my check engine light kept coming on and i was still having problems with the electrical. i was in the process of moving and decided to take my vehicle to a different dealer. the dealer at that time told me not to worry about it that it was a minor repair and they could fix it when i settled in. so on the 16th of september i released my vehicle to dave smith auto for repair. i told them i wanted the leaking doors (now the passenger door was leaking as well) fixed or replaced, while they were fixing the electrical issues. the vehicle was in their shop for a whole month!! they could not get parts from jeep and they could not figure out how to fix the doors. jeep told them it is the structure of the vehicle and there was nothing they would do about it. the vehicle was returned to me on october 13th , on saturday the 14th my family was returning home when we lost all panel electrical, i slowed down and since we were only a mile away from home, i continued to drive. not even 100 yards later the whole car went into complete convulsion. we had the vehicle towed back to dave smith and they are again attempting to fix it this car has put my family in great danger!!! yet jeep will not recall or refund my money, it is an outrage to me that they can sell a vehicle and not have to stand behind their product!!! *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander 4x2. the contact stated that the engine stalled at least five times. the vehicle lost power and the engine completely shut off while driving 40 mph. she only had to turn the key once to restart the engine. she also stated that the transmission light illuminated during the stalling and the transmission was stuck in third gear. the contact had to drive nine miles to the dealer with the vehicle in third gear. she paid out of pocket for the repair. the dealer stated that the failure was caused by build up in the transmission filter. the current mileage is 16,011. updated 01-14-08. *kb updated 12/12/07.*jb
