I left work from downtown pittsburgh at 4:15 pm, and while crossing outbound on the vetrans bridge, my jeep turned itself off. the steering became extremely tough, and i was barely able to get to the side of the road. i turned off the jeep, turned it back on, and thankfully it started again. if traffic was moving faster, like it usually does, i would have caused a wreck.

The exhaust hanger allowed the exhaust to shift up into the bumper causing the rear bumper to melt/burn. my family's lives were put in danger and my bumper was ruined because of this engineering defect. [xxx], ceo of town & country dealerships in oregon sent an email to warn his customers of this problem stating the following: dear patriot and compass owners, .... something of concern that we feel we should share with you. the issue has to deal with the exhaust pipe on (non limited) models. in particular those models that do not have chrome tip extension on the end of the exhaust pipe. we have noticed on certain vehicles, that if by chance you should run over an object, or if something hits the pipe or muffler, it can cause the pipe to shift upward. it potentially may lock and position itself approximately 2 inches higher than it normally should. this may cause the exhaust to hit the back of the plastic bumper cover and cause it to get extremely hot. it may cause the bumper to potentially melt and burn. there have only been a handful of cases nationwide; i believe less than 3 from what i have been told ... please note that the manufacturer has not come up with an official fix... [xxx] at this time chrysler refuses to issue a recall or warn consumers, clearly placing those jeep owners lives in danger. chrysler will not take action to fix the fire hazard vehicles they are selling unless the government makes them. videos are available on youtube by searching jeep compass bumper melting and jeep patriot bumper melting. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

We purchased our 2011 jeep compass in december of 2011. approximately 3 months later my wife experienced an engine stall in the middle of making a left-hand turn going approx. 20 mph. there was no warning light or indication that the engine was no longer running. the power steering locked up and became very difficult to maintain control of the vehicle since happened in the middle of a turn into on-coming traffic. within a month later it happened to me and again while making a slow left-handed turn. my wife notified the dealership where we purchased the jeep and they said to bring it in next time it happened. it happened a 3rd time with my wife in june 2012 -again while making a left-handed turn. we then took the vehicle to the dealership for scheduled maintenance and to investigate the problem. they kept it for a week and said the computer diagnostics reported no issues. they said until it happened with them they couldn't isolate the problem. today, july 18th, 2012 it has happened again with my wife for the 4th time making a left-handed turn again. this is an extreme safety hazard and upon researching other customer complaints, it is quite common. in fact, i am finding that 25-50% of the customer complaints about the 2011 jeep compass are related to this engine stall out while driving. we have returned the vehicle to the dealership as we were instructed and i left them copies of the research i did and customer complaints so they have no reason to say it is isolated to just my vehicle because there is a definite trend that warrants a safety recall in my opinion. at this time it is in the hands of chrysler to bring this to a resolution. the vehicle only has about 8000 miles and lots of warranty left so i am hoping to see chrysler stand behind their reputation and do the right thing.

I own a 2011 jeep compass for 2 weeks when i stopped at a stop sign, stopped and took off. once i took off the jeep engine just stopped...i couldn't tell it until i tried to turn and had no control! the dealership said the engine needed an update code, that they don't have yet for the 2.4l engine. so now i have a car with less than 2600 miles on it in the shop that we can't drive. why would they sell a car that shuts off for no reason and they know about it?? i have 2 small children thank god they were not in the car with me. now we are in a rental...thanks jeep.
