Odi opened ea02-029 to determine whether a safety-related defect trend existed in the my 1997 jeep grand cherokee hood latch assemblies.during ea02-029, there was no specific failure mechanism identified that could differentiate the my 1997 vehicles from other vehicles containing this same hood latch assembly or could account for their higher complaint rate.as a result, odi expanded the scope of this investigation to include all grand cherokee vehicles equipped with the subject hood latch assemblies.in performing ea02-029, it was determined that some of the secondary hood latches in the subject vehicles may exhibit increased operating frictional resistance; however, since none of the primary hood latches showed any evidence of mechanical or operational deficiency and the complaint rate of hood fly-ups measured over an extended exposure time was low, a safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time.

While driving home from local store, my wife had the driver side door unexpectedly fling open as she was making a right hand turn. she was able to stop and secure the door by holding it for the short one to two mile trip home. after making it home, i inspected the door and locking mechanism, and discovered that the metal of the door skin as well as the metal where the lock mechanism is held to the door was cracked in several places . this makes the door unable to align with the locking mechanism on the car. this is a potentialy very dangerous occurance especially if it had occured on a highway or expressway.*ak

#1- concerning rusted rotors. (recall 98v005000/front brake rotors). we purchased this vehicle used 9-16-97. shortly thereafter we discovered that the vehicle had corosion/rusted rotors. we were informed by the service department, that the rusted rotors were not covered by the extended warranty we purchased. that was 4/98. september of 2000 i discovered the recall while doing some research. this time i contacted bobette thomas at jim marsh service about the rusted rotars. she took the information and called me back later that day. i was informed that the recall did not affect my vehicle. we purchased it used and do not know where it originated. we believe the rusted rotars are a product of improper manufacturing processes. i am requesting that jeep repair or replace the defective parts and honor the recall. #2 since purchasing this used vehicle we have had repeated fuel injector problems. we have taken it to be serviced for fuel odors on 8 different occassions in the past 3 years. on three of those occassions we were told nothing was wrong. yet the smell continued. there is obviously a problem with this vehicle's fuel injector system. again my vehicle is experiencing intermitant fuel odors. it is no longer under warranty and we a failure rate as extensive as ours has been is not acceptable. i believe had the original problem that is causing this repeated failure, been diagnosed when initially taken to the dealership our warranty would have resolved the issue. i would like this problem addressed in it's entirety. #3 rear hatchback doorlocks and latch. 1-12-98 i reported a lock problem and the closure problems i had been having. although i was given a new keyless entry remote. the rear hatch has never closed or locked 100% of the time. i recently discovered this part is also under recall. i would like jeep to repair or replace the parts in question. #4 front axle vibration listed on due bill. never corrected.*ak

I have a 1993 jeep grand cherokee. this vehicle has a defective lift gate mechanism. initially the defect prevented the lift gate from closing, now it won't open. in april 1993 the nhtsa identified a defect in the mechanism and issued a recall to correct this problem (93v055000 ). i contacted daimler-chrysler for assistance in correcting the proble. daimler-chrysler indicated the vehicle is not covered by a safety recall for this problem. did their legal department work out some sort of plea bargin for their responsibility regarding this safety issue? any information you can provide which will help resolve this safety issue would be appreciated. thank you. cliff oiler coiler@columbus.rr.com. *ak
